2.5 stars. If I'm honest, I picked up this book, off my employers bookshelf, because in left-leaning politics the 2020 election is known as the "battle for the soul of the nation" and I incorrectly assumed this edition of Chicken Soup would be about that. Instead it is about 9/11 which is all well and fine but not what I wanted. In the introduction it mentions that this book was put together faster than any other edition and you can certainly tell. It is littered with obvious typos and every entry is virtually the same. In the beginning the stories were touching and brought tears to my eyes but eventually it began to feel like "yeah, yeah. Another sad day during which you and everyone you knew was actually perfectly fine. We get it." It almost minimized and desensitized me to the attacks of 2001 and I regret finishing it. I would recommend other readers skip section 4 "Renewed Patriotism" entirely and maybe skip the whole book.
It is interesting to have read this book as we delve into another type of craziness. Sept 11 brought out a lot of hope, and sadness, and fear -- hmmm, sounds familar. There is talk of returning to normal, and what does that mean -- again, feels like I am stepping into today's issues. As expected there was a fair amount of God is great in this book, and I question that, but to each their own. There were many tales of heroes, and just people getting their stories out. I cried. I felt hope. And I remember, we made it through...and now, 19 years later, I have faith that we will do so again.
The title says it all. It helped me to accept why Brandon was deployed and helped me through many many rough nights.. Loved it, I will read some of the stories to children so the will grow to appreciate the country we live in.
There are a lot of stories in this book I never heard before and gave me a better picture of what people dealt with both during and after the terrorists attacks. I wish there were at least a few more about Flight 93. That seems to be the forgotten part of what happened.
The subtitle is "Stories to Heal the Heart of Our Nation." I picked up this book at the Valley Book Fair. It was very encouraging because it told of how we Americans pulled together from all walks of life, even though at times, it was sad to read some stories of course. Remembering that camaraderie was refreshing in this age of irrationality and inability to relate to those that disagree with your beliefs. I found the book insightful and thought-provoking. Highly recommend if you like the Chicken Soup series.
I read this book years ago and refer back to it often when I need a reminder of how our world came together after the September 11, 2001 attacks on America. There are so many heartwarming stories that came out of this tragedy.
Ironically I finished reading this book on the 9th anniversary of the events of September 11, on which the stories writen in the book were about. From the heart of the people who witnessed what happened the stores go from feelings of people when they heard the news, to reactions, to America responding, the world responding, what is next and reflections. What was the response of people? To want to help in any way they could, to mourn those that died, but to show that America would stand strong, and would recover and fight back, not letting terrorism win. These stores are written by the average person, compiled together to show that yes America was struck by a great tragedy, but that it would survive.
This book of stories about the September 11 attack bring many emotions to the reader. I personally like this book because it has me thinking of how great America really is, from inside America to all around America. Chicken Soup for the Soul of America has many stories that will either have two waterfalls down your face or will have a little twinkle of happiness in your eyes.
I read this book in 2002, after the September 11th attacks. The stories in this book were so inspiring during a very trying time. Not only do we remember those who died that day, but we remember the survivors...and the stories in this book reflect that. Stories of true survivors!
Uplifting stories from September 11, 2001. Some stories are better than others, but they are all told from people who were directly effected by the 9/11 attacks.
