Splish, splash, splosh! Stamp, stamp, stamp! Alfie's brand new yellow rain boots are perfect for splashing through puddles and stamping in mud. But something about them doesn't feel quite right. Whatever could it be? He's got them on the wrong feet!
Shirley Hughes is the illustrator of more than two hundred children’s books and has won many prestigious awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal twice. She is the author-illustrator of DON'T WANT TO GO! and OLLY AND ME 1 2 3. She died at her home in London on the 25th of February, 2022.
We introduced our grand-daughter to the wonderful Shirley Hughes books with Alfie's Feet. Got to start early with the classics, right? So beautifully observed, that not only are her books a complete joy to adults reading with little ones, but a child of only 16 months can also be seen to pay close attention and love this book!
Alfie’s feet is about a boy getting new Wellington boots as splashing in muddy puddles. It is an intriguing story and could encourage children to think of their experiences of stamping in muddy puddles and understand Alfie’s feelings of the enjoyment and excitement he may be experiencing.
The book would be a good read for reception chickens because it is basic and quite repetitive and simple which could develop the younger readers knowledge.
Alfie loves puddles. His parents aren't quite so fond of the life choices he makes on rainy days. The solution? Boots! This story really captures what it is to be so young again. Alfie is always easy to relate to, and his relationship with his sister is exactly right. I kind of want to stomp puddles now too.
This story is about a little boy Alfie, and his sister Annie Rose who is learning to walk, and their feet. Alfie loves to splash in rainy day puddles so his mum bought him shiny yellow rubber boots. Something about them feels funny. Cute story with wonderful illustrations.
This is one of those books that I read as a child and kinda stuck with me. It's a cute little story, I love the problem and solution, and it's just well illustrated and fun. I remember liking the story as a kid and I still like it now.
The drawings are divine. My eyes are on them all the time. Splish, Splash, Splosh... Stamp stamp stamp... I am slowly turning into a Shirley Hughes' fan.
So happy my 2yo is finally into Alfie! Gorgeous images. Also love how the baby is on the potty which my daughter would totally relate to, but most wouldn't nowadays.
Brilliant picture book to read to a KS1 class. The illustrations in this book are beautiful. This book is a brilliant link to 'Out and About' picture book by Shirley Hughes as it has lots of links.
Väga nunnu raamat väiksest Alfist ning tema veel väiksemast õest. Alfie sai endale uued kollased kummikud, millega jalad lombis hullates märjaks ei saa. Väga armsate vana kooli illustratsioonidega.
This book is a good read for a younger group of students, most likely pre-k or kindergarten. The book is about a brother and a sister and their toes, feet and shoes. The setting of this book is a loving and cozy family unit. Alfie gets a new pair of yellow, shiny rain boots which he stomps, splish, splash and splosh's with in the rain puddles. A teacher could use this book to review rhyme words, introduce adjectives, and phonemic awareness. Students could break up the sounds and syllables in the words stomp, splish, splash and splosh. In the end, Alfie had his yellow rain boots on the wrong foot; his mom paints an L on the left rain boot and an R on the right rain boot. After reading this book, the teacher could encourage students to locate items in the classroom that start with the letters L or R.
This story is about young Alfie’s experience of getting new boots and trying them out in the park, only to discover that he’s put them on the wrong feet. Like all the Alfie books, this one is characterized by Hughes’ detailed, warm renderings of a loving family. This one is particularly rich in tactile images: you can almost hear the flapping of the birds he chases as he splashes through cool puddles in his boots; you can smell the ink as Mother writs an “L” and “R” on the left and right boots; you see the steam rising from wet socks hung up by the fire. A very nice addition to your story basket.
ALFIE'S FEET is a little slice of perfection. This is the second book in the Alfie series. Somehow, a brother and sister relationship, the importance of boots for keeping your feet dry, a discussion about left feet and right feet, the delights of sploshing in puddles, and the wonder of childhood are all warmly described in one simple little book. Shirley Hughes is the master at understanding and depicting the importance and brilliance in the every day moments of life. This is the perfect book to get you excited to go "splish, splash, SPLOSH!" in some puddles.
Once again Shirley Hughes captures with ease the gentle charm of an English childhood. The illustrations of the local park took me right back to my own years as a wee bairn in Edinburgh. And I still do enjoy a bit of puddlejumping although I outgrew my last pair of gumboots far too long ago. Cute and colourful.
I don't love the book, but my son is charmed and delighted with Alfie right now . . . so who am I to argue when he's taken to memorizing the books and pretending to read them back to himself?
