Rate this book
Nuala is descended from ancient witch folk, eternally bound to help others find love. But after the death of her husband, she harbors no such dreams for herself. Then she meets Sinjin, the Earl of Donnington, and feels something stir within her for the first time in centuries.

Handsome and scandalously tempting, Sinjin has never met a woman he couldn't seduce. Yet from the moment he sees the stunning young widow, he knows he wants more than just one night of sin—and even the discovery of the dark secret they share won't stop him from trying to possess her forever. But first he must free her from her immortal bondage, which means robbing her of her magic for all time.

Trained as an artist with a BFA in Illustration from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Susan Krinard became a writer in 1992 when a friend read a short story she'd written and suggested she try writing a romance novel. A long-time fan of science fiction and fantasy, Susan began reading romance -- and realized what she wanted to do was combine the two genres. Prince of Wolves, her first romance novel and one of the earliest to feature a werewolf hero, was the result. Within a year Susan had sold the manuscript to Bantam as part of a three-book contract, and the novel went on to make several bestseller lists.

Since then, she's written and published over fourteen paranormal and fantasy novels, and written stories for a number of anthologies, both fantasy and romance. Both the anthology Out of This World (which included Susan's "Kinsman") and the novel Lord of the Beasts appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Susan makes her home in New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment", with her husband Serge, their dogs Freya, Nahla and Cagney, and their cat Jefferson. In addition to writing, Susan's interests include music of almost every kind, old movies, reading, nature, baking, and collecting unique handmade jewelry and decorative crafts.

When I started this, I didn't realize that there were several previous books in series. I was a little lost in parts when people/events were referenced from previous book(s) but decided to keep reading it anyways. I wasn't too impressed with this book as I felt the plot was rather disjointed and characters weren't compelling at all. All and all, I was pretty glad this was a library book.

Hmm.. basically 2 stars says it all.

I think the main idea of this story was good, but the execution was all wrong.

This was my first Krinard book, so if anyone recommends another that I might enjoy better let me know.

Nuala is a woman in the regency era in England who is the widow of one of the noblity. However, she is more than that, apparently, a great deal more that that. She has connection to the age of the witch hunts and has an enemy that is still out to get her. She is part of a women's group of widows that have sworn never to marry again, although she herself is not so sure and certainly doesn't want her own recruit Lady Orwell to take the same vow and forgo all possibility.

Of course, Nuala meets Sinjin, Earl of Donnington and they find themselves connected, almost irresistably. What follows is a war of sorts as the ghosts of the witch hunters come into their lives and they have to fight to keep their lives and not give in to rage and hatred. It is quite a struggle and the the entire group of women who have foresworn marriage are their sturdy friends helping them though it.

I recommend the book to anyone that enjoys stories that encompass magic and the more human living among us whatever the time period.

I quite enjoyed the earlier books in this series. This one, however, just doesn't resonate with me the same way. The first half is a lot of going to parties and people sitting around gossiping. The action. Picks up in the second half, but by then I was bored and not engaged at all, so I ended up skimming.

Nuala and Sinjin have history and it's not looked back upon fondly. So when they find themselves once
again in each others company in London society, they greet each other with tension and obvious
distrust.
Nuala has a lived a long life as a witch, using her powers for good or good to the best of her ability.
She favors young women and help them find true love but recently her powers have faded and since
the death of her husband, Nuala has lived a normal life as a Lady of society.

Sinjin blames Nuala for the death of his brother and has festered a lot of resentment towards her
for years but that hatred is also paired with a deep longing and attraction. He's always been
loose with women, preferring to keep mistresses and have no real lasting ties to the opposite sex.
However, now Sinjin is suffocating under a sinister black cloud of an angry spirit and he fears
he might lose his mind.

I found this book to be lacking as a whole. First major problem I had with it was the focus put
on Deborah (Nuala's new companion) and her story, leaving Nuala and Sinjins story to be reduced by half. The book was already short enough, that paired now with the secondary story, I found that
there wasn't enough time to fully flush out the main characters. As such, Sinjins 'love' for Nuala
despite his belief that she was responsible for his brothers death, despite the evil spirit within
him wanting revenge on Nuala - seemed very fake to me.

The last bit seemed to pick up a bit but then it was over and I was left not liking Sinjin as a hero
or Nuala either as a heroine. Because I don't know them. I don't understand how they truly are,
only the surface basics. I am very disappointed by this book because I typically look to Susan
Krinard as a guaranteed good read. But this book was not successful.

The synopsis is somehow different from the whole story. Both characters have issues in the past, which are described in snippets, but most likely included in the previous books in the series. Since this is the first book I've read, I can only understand little.

Anyway, my first rant is that there are so many characters that I can't grasp who is whom and so I just stick one face for all the women mentioned. The development of Nuala's feelings to Sinjin is somehow shortened that one moment they are fighting and the next the she falls in love. The final ending is also far-fetched and somehow confusing, and suddenly they are all happy.

The sex scenes are hot, the side story about Nuala's friend is good also that I'm also confused who she will end up with. Overall the story is an somehow enjoyable read despite all my rants.

I don't remember the other books in this series being quite so boring as this (I surely wouldn't have continued if that was the case.) The only supernatural is that Nuala is a witch and a ghost makes an appearance. The first half of the book is rather boring with London society parties and meetings of the Widow's Club. The action finally starts in the second half and then it's hard to stop reading as there is so much going on. I did like both Nuala and Sinjin but their antics were mostly just irritating.

I really enjoy her wolf series, and have been a bit disappointed in her Fane series. This one comes after Lord of Legend and picks up 4 years later with Sinjin and Nuala. It's an interesting storyline, but the continued aggressiveness of Sin is a lot irritating. He's seen the magickal and still fights it.
