Will There Be Wine?

Rate this book
Austen Keller was living her dream. She landed a career-defining job which moved her and her husband to Paris. Shortly thereafter, she was divorced. This wasn’t the plan. Yet there she was—pushing 40 and starting over.

A decade after she’d last been single, Austen enters the dating scene playing by a new set of rules in a different language, culture, and lingerie standards. She experiences every type of miserable first date imaginable and lives to tell the tales of Pierre the Mansplainer, Simon the Snoozer, Emile the Over-Sharer, Guillaume of the Gym Shorts, and many more. On most dates, she struggles to get past one glass of Bordeaux without wanting to bolt. Even worse, no one chases after her when she runs. It doesn’t take long for her to realize that whoever said French men were romantic deserves a swift kick in the pants.

A rewarding and high-powered career.
Fabulous female friendships.
True love.

Austen continues to ask herself: Is “having it all” too much to ask?

A genuine and tragically hilarious novel about an ex-pat woman's journey of self-discovery through a string of disastrous dates, relationships forged in a deep cultural divide, world travels, and wine. A lot of wine.

Whitney Cubbison is a dual American & French citizen living in Paris since 2009. She grew up in Texas and California and graduated from UCLA with a degree in French. She started her career in Communications working for high-tech PR agencies in San Francisco and eventually joined Microsoft where she worked for sixteen years, thirteen of which from the Paris office. During that time, she held various international roles that encompassed public relations, employee communications, executive speechwriting, and social media.

She earned her French citizenship in early 2022 and left Microsoft in the summer of that year to focus on completing her first novel, Will There Be Wine? The story, while fiction, was deeply inspired by Whitney’s own experiences as an ex-pat divorcée living in Paris and trying to navigate the cultural minefield of dating in a foreign country.

She had such fun writing that one that she decided to write a sequel, which became Will There Be Love? Her own search for love is ongoing, so she's hoping this title will manifest someone great for her. A girl can dream...!

Will There Be Love? (which can be read as a stand-alone) was released on April 29, 2025.

When she’s not writing, Whitney can be found sitting in Parisian cafés and restaurants with her friends, drinking wine.

Thank you to the author, Whitney Cubbison, for an advance digital review copy of WILL THERE BE WINE. These opinions are my own.

In Paris, love was oxygen and Austin was gasping for breath. p1

Some things this book does really work, and some don't, for me.

...

Readers who enjoy character driven books and ones who like unreliable narrators will have no trouble with this plot structure, likely, but it just wasn't for me. I still enjoyed the excitement of the many romances, though, and the satisfaction for finding love!

Dating in the city of love sounds so wonderful, but is it?

Austen, a recently divorced expat in Paris, starts actively dating like its a job. Man after man come and go, each one worst than the next. Her dating mishaps are so bad she started a blog and gained a huge following, everyone laughing with her (hopefully.)

Austen is nearly 40, confident, intelligent and professionally successful, but unlucky in love. She starts dating with that air of confidence, but over time her vulnerability begins to show, and her casual flings turn into heartbreak.

I loved the change in Austen. She was blessed with so many wonderful friends, who gave her unwavering support, wouldn't that be great for us to all have a large posse?

The ending was fantastic, so perfect, earning an extra star for its magnificence.

Austen Keller is a speech writer living in Paris with her soon to be ex-husband, Brad. Once the divorce is final, Austen is ready to start her new single life. She is about to turn 40, she has not dated anyone in a really long time, so with the encouragement of friends, she ventures into online dating. It doesn't go very well, so she starts a dating blog in which she talks about all of her dates. With her many travels that her job takes her on, will Austen find what she really wants and true happiness?

WILL THERE BE WINE is a sweet and funny rom-com. I really like Austen's character as she tries to rediscover herself and find love in Paris. The blog she has in the story is funny and I enjoyed reading about her many dates. The best part to me, however, was the great friendships she had and how they were such a great support to her during this time in her life. I highly recommend picking up a copy of this fun book or adding it to your TBR list.

Many thanks to Whitney Cubbison and @suzyapprovedbooktours for my ARC and having me on this tour.

I have to start off by saying I LOVE the title of this book! That is a question I ask often...it could make or break going to an event!

Austen is my kind of gal, and I think we would be good friends. She is strong, confident, and knows what she wants from life. Well, most of the time. She seems to be chasing love or an idea of what love should be like. This is a detriment in a way because she looks at things unrealistically, but it makes for good fodder when telling dating stories, which we are privy to via her blog stories. Men are the same no matter what country you are in; you will have some winners and some losers.

There is a lot of flirting, witty repartee, interesting travels, and soul searching. I enjoyed the various locations and the interesting characters. I liked how there was a close-knit group that spans the globe. I was jealous that they could drop and take a trip at almost the drop of a hat. But that is the difference between European and American outlooks when it comes to vacation.

This was a fairly quick read for me, and I look forward to future adventures from this author.

Austen Keller is living the life she always dreamed of. She lives in her favorite city, Paris, has a high-paying job that allows her to travel the world, and has a group of friends as close as family. But what she didn’t foresee in her dream life was her divorce. Suddenly she finds herself nearing 40 and single for the first time in her adult life. She imagines that the Parisian men she dates will be exciting and romantic, but things don’t go as planned. We follow her misadventures in dating as she seeks out the perfect man who she believes must be out there looking for her, too.

The premise of the book is refreshing—an independent woman in her late 30s who has no interest in settling down and is not worried about the ticking of any biological clock. Parts of the novel are genuinely funny. When Austen tries online dating, she starts a blog to document her terrible first dates. I wished the entire book was this imaginary blog because the stories are both horrifyingly realistic and hilarious. I wanted to enjoy this book more, but unfortunately, it missed the mark for me.

Though the book markets itself as a light-hearted romantic comedy, I wanted more substance to make me care deeply about the characters. Austen never felt entirely realistic to me. She tells us how intelligent she is for the entire book, but we never see the evidence to back this up. Most of the characters felt two-dimensional—we learn what they wear, what their (absurdly fancy) jobs are, every restaurant where they eat, and listen to their conversations about dating, and that is the extent of how well we know anyone. Austen often comes across as shallow and, occasionally, judgmental. Her dates and her relationships with men in the novel never felt mature to me.

I believe there’s an audience for this book, but I don’t think it’s the best choice for anyone who is looking for multi-dimensional characters, a realistic depiction of ex-pat life, or an honest glimpse of what dating as a 40-year-old divorcee in a foreign country might be like. Then again, I read that the novel was inspired by the author’s real life-experiences, so perhaps my imagined idea of Paris is simply not wild or glamorous enough! (If that’s the case, I would absolutely read a memoir!)

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the kind of ARC that makes me want to still take on random ARCs. It was such a fun read! Sex in the City of Love (Paris!). It really did remind me of the show, with lots of different dating experiences shared then her having some moments of reflection with her friends. Just over wine, not cosmos.

Austen is living her dream, a highly successful career and residing in Paris. The book starts with her getting divorced, however she mostly feels relief. This story isn't about her grieving marriage, it's about her blossoming and trying to find someone posdinble who also can match her energy.

I loved that this book showed a woman who isn't in her 20s being open to new experiences and still having an active love and sex life. It's not smutty but her adventures in dating are so much fun, and there are a lot of them! She can be a bit snobbish sometimes, but we all have our flaws.

When she was wrong her friends would point it out and give her something to think over. I wish that we saw more of them and heard more of their stories because they all seemed very interesting. Austen showed a rich life full of people, even when she was "alone". She still hunted for love, but overall her life sounded satisfying without it.

My one issue: She got very mad over her ex asking for help with rent after the divorce. He had quit his job to move with her and had trouble finding another because he didn't speak French. When he moved he didn't have a work history, making job hunting tough. They made the decision to move and for him to leave his job as a couple, assuming they would stay one. But after, it's now her money and no longer her problem because she's doing fine. I get mad about this because many stay-at-home moms get screwed over this way in divorce.

This was a very small plot point and my only glaring negative in what was otherwise a very fun story of a secure and confident woman's journey after divorce. I give it a big recommendation for anyone looking for a light read about the trials of finding love.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Austen Keller is living her best life - she is a speech writer working her dream job, in her dream city of Paris. The only problem? Her husband Brad is unhappy. Soon after they divorce, Austen enters the dating scene she hasn’t been part of for quite some time. On her new journey for love, she has some memorable time with her best friends, truly discovers herself and has some hilarious encounters with new men.

Cheers to such a fun and refreshing read! I immediately identified with this book (because, well, wine!) and also because I’m around the same age as Austen. I think I’ve also been married almost the same amount of years that she was. And I can’t imagine starting over dating again at this point in my life! So I thought it was pretty brave of her to put herself back out there, search for her own happiness and never settle. Her blog that she started to write about her dating adventures was hilarious! I read them out loud to my husband, who is luckily nothing like Brad or any of the men Austen encountered. My favorite part of the story was Austen’s relationships with her girlfriends - they were all there for each other no matter what. And their vacations sounded so dreamy!

Thank you so much to Whitney Cubison for reaching out to me and providing me with an ARC! It was the perfect read for me during an otherwise stressful week. And - happy launch day!! 🥂

I don’t read romcoms often, but I do enjoy them around Valentine’s Day... specially when set in Paris, and offer so many fine wines to discover!

Will There Be Wine? by Whitney Cubbison was the perfect book to curl up with over the weekend, and celebrate love.

Austen is an American 40-year-old living her dream life in Paris; she’s successful, has amazing friends and travels all over. She’s also recently divorced and trying to find love again.

Amidst cultural differences and other mishaps, Austen’s dating adventures (disasters?) are discouraging but definitely entertaining, she doesn’t give up!

A cross between Bridget Jones’s Diary and Eat, Pray, Love, Will There Be Wine? is funny, full of hope, and an absolute delight!

Also, always love a good nineties movie reference - Joe Versus the Volcano, anyone? Highly recommend!

Thank you to author for the gifted copy.

Dating is so hard, especially online dating. After reading this book, it was nice to know that I am not alone. Yes, I know it is fiction but we all have dating horror stories and I can definitely relate to Austen's. I love the list of rules. And Paris! And a girl gang! Give me more! When is the movie coming out? ;) I definitely recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with finding "the one" (or "anyone" in some cases) but still has hope!

Will There Be Wine? By Whitney Cubbison. Thanks to the author for the gifted copy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Austen has just gotten divorced and now finds herself dating again in Paris. But dating has changed with the times and the men aren’t as baggage free as they were when they were young.

This is a great second coming of age book of a woman finding herself and trying for love again. There are some laughable moments and great supporting friendships. I loved learning about France and the difference in cultures when it comes to dating. It really just a fun and refreshing read.

Will There Be Wine is available now.

5 stars!

I think books have a funny way of finding us when we need them most....

The author graciously sent me a copy of her book in May of 2023, and as we all know how the never-ending TBR get the best of us, it sat on my bookshelf for the past year and a half. Fast forward to the first snowy Sunday evening in December 2024, when I walked to my shelf, and this was just calling my name. I sat down at 11pm to just "take a peek'. Low & behold, this grabbed my attention so quickly, I binged it within 2 sittings in about 24 hours.

The main character and the plot so vividly resembled the past year of my own personal life, that I had to stop multiple times and text friends saying "why does it feel like someone wrote a book about my past year?"

The book resonated me with me so much that I devoured every page! One of those books that I quite literally did not want to end. Paris has always been near & dear to my heart, so that was the chef's kiss, icing on the cake!

Needless to say, had I read this a year and a half ago, it would have never had the impact it had on me today.

Thank you, Whitney for this gifted copy & I can not WAIT to read your next one :)

Oh how I wish Goodreads allowed decimal points! This is a solid 4.5 for me. I loved this story - girlfriends, world travel, wine, terrible dates, romance and love - all in one. I gobbled it up in one day and I was so excited to learn there is a sequel!

I'd definitely recommend this book if you need a laugh out loud, female empowering, rom-com.

Talking about the language of the book, it's easily understandable and not bombastic. The novel is fast-paced, but it doesn't dilute the awesomeness the book carries. The friendship, as depicted in the novel, is something worth noting, and I feel like an urge to have such friends.
The characters have the ability to make readers like them. The book cover is beautiful and suggestive, and the title is apt and suggestive (a lot of wine). The book hooked me to itself till the very beginning.
It was a light and fun rom-com which I enjoyed reading.

Synopsis

Austen Keller was living her dream. She landed a career-defining job which moved her and her husband to Paris. Shortly thereafter, she was divorced. This wasn’t the plan. Yet there she was—pushing 40 and starting over.

Even worse, no one chases after her when she runs. It doesn’t take long for her to realize that whoever said French men were romantic deserves a swift kick in the pants.

A rewarding and high-powered career. ✔️
Fabulous female friendships. ✔️
True love.🤔😳

Austen continues to ask herself: Is “having it all” too much to ask?😬

A genuine and tragically hilarious novel about an ex-pat woman’s journey of self-discovery through a string of disastrous dates, relationships forged in a deep cultural divide, world travels, and wine. A lot of wine. 🍷

First of all, I would like to thank the author for and ARC only hoping for an honest review, and here it goes.

Right from tue beginning of the story I felt completely drawn to Austen, she is brilliant, independent and above all she speaks her mind.

Far from living her dream life, she finds herself dealing with a divorce, alimony and being obliged to see her life from another perspective. This is certainly not what she had in mind when accepted this job.

However difficult the situation, Austen has amazing friends all throughout her journey. They will lister to her, drink with her and be there every time she needs to talk. In fact, once she enters the online dating market they will encourage her to start a blog (very much Carrie Bradshaw in SATC) to try to connect with other single people out there. After all, they are the only ones who can validate such terrible succession of first dates!

There is a variety of topics on the table: lack of sensitivity, being self sufficient, not being able to be oneself when dating, being too picky and the one I felt more identified with: not being able to speak one’s mind.

I loved this book beginning to end and I am grateful I had the opportunity to read it and savor it! It is really great wine!🍷

"Can I take your coat?"
"You can take the dress too"

And there you have why, "Will There Be Wine?" by talented debut author Whitney Cubbison, a grown up hilarious rom com not only worked for me as a romantic comedy but as a really honest story about a women coming into her own. Austen (yes like Jane Austen!) learns, after being divorced at 40, how to take what she wants and not wait for life to happen to her but live her life no matter what happens to her.

After moving to Paris for a lucrative job as a speech writer with her husband she was at a loss when he left. She knew things weren't perfect but she thought they would work through it. Slowly her friends, very much like the ladies in Sex And The City, help her navigate dating, meet cutes and dating apps. The funniest moments are the kaleidescope of really bad dates from the planning their future holidays after one date guy, the obnoxious mansplainer to the TMI sharer and don't get me started with gym shorts guy, just think of the Friends episode of the guy in the coffee shop spreading his legs to give all of NY a peak!

When she realizes, "The right one will put in the time and effort to build something that will last," it's such an eye opening moment. Knowing she can have it all just maybe not right now maybe not all at once.

In the end she actually has to make a choice and let's just say I never found text messages so hot and swoon worthy. I have never quoted the author's acknowledgement in a review but this brought a smile to my heart, "and last but not least, to every guy who goes on a date with me at any point in the future, thanks for having the courage to do so, knowing you risk ending up in a sequel. Kidding. Maybe"

Here's hoping there's a sequel because I will bring the wine!

I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

This book did not disappoint. If you love a well written Rom Com with a happy ending, this book is for you! The characters are well written and I appreciate how complex Austen's character is and her persistence in finding the "one" in Paris even if it means a lot of dates.

I'll be honest, I've not been on the dating scene for almost 10 years and wouldn't have the first clue about these dating apps or how to use them. The author did an excellent job of giving an insider's look into the world of dating apps. Which I found exiting and overwhelming all at once.

Told against the backdrop of Austen being an expat living in Paris added depth and made for more funny antics because of the international twist. I also identified with her adapting to the cultural differences and how those played into the story. I enjoyed that the author used humor as we joined Austen on her journey, despite the highs and lows. I cheered Austen on during the good times and empathized during the bad. This book is an honest look at the roller coaster ride that is dating.

I receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Austen lives in Paris and has recently divorced her husband, Brad. She has a job she loves and is enjoying life. However, she finds dating in Paris challenging, with cultural differences distinct from dating in the US.

The book was genuinely enjoyable. I'm glad I had the opportunity to dive into this delightful romcom about dating mishaps. I believe we all have our fair share of wild dating stories, and it's reassuring to read about someone else's, realizing we're not alone in our unusual dating experiences. It was insightful to understand the different cultural nuances in the dating scene. I wanted a romcom that was lighthearted and trigger-free, and this book fit the bill.

I appreciated the humor throughout, as well as the hilariously disastrous dates. It was refreshing to read a dating book that didn't focus heavily on intimate scenes. I hope Whitney writes another book soon because I'm eager to read more from her. I highly recommend "Will There Be Wine" to anyone who enjoys romcoms and tales of dating blunders.

«.. she walked out onto her balcony, whiskey in hand and Eiffel Tower in center view..»

Isn’t it a great way to start a story?
And this story is indeed a great story.

This book makes you travel around the world, it makes you laugh, it shows the true meaning of friendship, it shows how difficult but at the same time hilarious it is for a divorced woman at her 30s or 40s to manage to go on a romantic date and at the end it reminds you that also the fate plays interesting games.

So grap this book if you haven’t read it already, put on a glass of wine, dim the lights, and let this story take you on a fascinating journey..

Paris and wine and dating, oh my!

This book was so much fun. The story follows Austen, an American living in Paris and working as a speechwriter who travels with her boss all over the world. After splitting from her husband, Austen decides to take the leap into the French dating scene, where she quickly discovers men, dating, relationships, and love are often very different from how they are back in the States. Full of hilarious and cringeworthy dating disasters and disappointments, a wonderful cast of characters, and, yes, lots of wine, this book had me completely charmed.

I found Austen very relatable and appreciated that she was a bit older than many romance heroines (39 at the start of the book, and she celebrated her 40th during the course of the story; I’ll be 40 in December and can only hope to have as glamorous a celebration as she did!). Austen was strong and independent, smart and driven, and she didn’t let disappointment or heartache keep her down for long. I loved her eclectic group of friends and often found myself wishing I could be part of it in real life. Then of course there was the Parisian setting, which is always a favourite setting for me.

Overall, a very enjoyable read, and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to those who enjoy romcoms and romantic women's fiction.

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First, thank you @whitneycubbisonwrites for personally reaching out and gifting me a free e-ARC copy of your debut novel for an honest review! 🤍

This was my last and final read of 2022 and I absolutely ate this book up! What a cute cover too!

A story of re-finding oneself after divorce and the craziness of online dating BUT in Paris nonetheless! Fancy right?! 👀

I laughed all throughout this read. It was witty and comical. It was exactly what I needed after a long day at work! The perfect whine down book! (See what I did there?! 🤪)

Austen was a very likable character it was hard not to root for her til the end! I enjoyed the chapters with the blog posts the absolute most! I love me a good laugh while reading! 😂
I wanted more of that!

I loved the strong group of friends she had for support through her ups and downs. Though I was surprised with the ending- I did not see it coming I was still happy with it! Did I think it would end up being a different character yes 🙃

All around a quick fun rom-com! I recommend! Be on the lookout for it Jan 2023

Glad to always support a fellow #bookstagrammer

That is all friends and as always…

Happy reading! 💕

How refreshing to read a novel in this genre where the plot isn't dependent upon emotionally stunted people and ridiculous misunderstandings. Austen is a complex character who is driven, honest, successful, and determined… while still believing in true love, romance, and happily ever after. I loved being on her journey from flings, to love, to French bistros, to far off places. I actually laughed out loud (in a good way) many times, felt for her in the hard times, and cheered her on through the good times. What a fun read.

I'm so happy I was able to read this one. It's the most relatable dating after divorce storyline I've read.

This one was absolutely hilarious.  I couldn't help but smile as I made my way through it. We have the most amazing background setting of Paris and add to that so many disastrous but hilarious dates.

I'm a sucker for a book with text messages and this one had it in spades! We also got some very funny on the money blogs about our MCs tinder dates!

"Will There Be Wine?" was a refreshingly honest take on dating post-divorce. This novel follows Austen, a recently divorced American currently working and residing in Paris. Whitney Cummison crafts characters who you actually want to get to know, and Austen's honesty and humor gave me Carrie Bradshaw vibes for sure. If you like rom-coms, if you have ever been on a bad date, or if you just need a fun escape, this novel is for you.

Many thanks to Whitney Cummison for the ARC of this novel. I can't wait to read more from this author!

Setting: Paris and around the globe
POV: single, 3rd person, past tense + blog posts
Tropes: string of bad dates
Spice Level: 2/5🌶, fade to black

What I Liked: I really adored the main character, a divorcee navigating dating in the City of Love. I thought her friend group and rules for dating were amazing and would have loved to have seen them incorporated even more! Austen’s job was really interesting and I enjoyed getting to see so much of the world through her travels.

What I Disliked: She starts a blog to write about her dates, which I found a little unnecessary and didn’t think it added a lot to the story. For me personally, there were so many bad dates that they all started to run together a bit.

Read This Book If…you want a more mature version of Emily in Paris!

Memorable Quote: “In Paris, love was oxygen, and Austen was gasping for breath.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book--I started it on a train ride from Porto to Lisbon and didn't put it down the entire time! Although the subject matter may seem "light-hearted" (it definitely falls in the romcom category), the writing is sharp and the protagonist is a very smart, ambitious career woman who navigates through lots of self-reflection. I didn't want the book to end because I felt like Austen (the main character) had become a good friend of mine, and I was enjoying hanging out with her. I'd recommend this book for anyone who's had to re-enter or navigate the modern dating scene, someone who wants a fun escape from their everyday life, or anyone who enjoyed The Holiday or Emily in Paris (though I think this is much smarter than Emily in Paris).

Okay, first of all the title of this book is just amazing and I vibed with it before even opening the first page. I found Austen’s story sad and frustrating, but also enlightening and insightful. I admired Austen’s self-worth throughout the entire story and how her eagerness to find love never impacted that, regardless of how many dead ends she ran into. I also enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the book and her meaningful friendships evolve further.
There were a bunch of laugh out loud moments for me, especially with the blog posts. And the ending was wrapped in a perfectly tied bow 🎀
I definitely recommend for a humorous and moving read that will transport you to Paris for the duration!
