The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."

Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.

This is a winner on the laugh meter, especially when read out loud so one can do Dr. Brad's accent. The Barbie/action figure exchange is a highlight. Barbie wars--who knew?

Mr. Klutz and Mrs. Coco thought a boy at school was a genius. They took him to room 104 to run some tests on him. The boy thought Dr. Brad was going to take out his brain and replace it with a monkey brain. He tried to hypnotize the boy which did not work. Then the boy tried to hypnotize a girl which did work. You have to read the book to see what happens to the girl.

These books are always so entertaining. AJ is a really interesting character and the story takes a much wackier tone than other books in this coming-of-age genre. Every book introduces a new, goofy character and Dr.Brad does not disappoint.

The struggle AJ has with potentially being a genius is one I remember from school. No one liked being ostracized by being put in the gifted class, so I really enjoy the hijinks AJ goes through to avoid being moved to Dork School and away from his friends.

The B-plot with Andrea was also a lot of fun. The parallels of their two arcs are very subtle against the hijinks, but they would be very fun to examine in-depth.

This month I read Dr. Brad has gone Mad! by Dan Gutman. The main character is AJ, who hates school. He has three friends, Michael, Ryan, and Neil, and they do not like the girls in their class (mostly Andrea and Emily) and argue with them. AJ is in the gifted and talented program and the school wants to test him to see if he is a genius and should go to a special school. Dr. Brad is the counselor who tests him and gets tired of all the kids fighting and has them do weird things to try to make them get along. He tries to hypnotize AJ, but it doesn't work, then AJ hypnotizes Andrea at recess to make her think she's a bad kid. She talks back to the teacher, leaves the classroom, then pulls the fire alarm. AJ looks for her to try to take her out of the trance and she is on the roof of the school. AJ goes on the roof to snap his finger and get her out of the trance and save her. It works and she hugs him and thanks him and his friends tease that he likes her. The next day Brad gets called to the principal's office and Dr. Brad is in there crying about Andrea being on the roof. He thinks it is his fault and has gone mad, so AJ helps by having them play ping-pong that Dr. Brad likes. AJ has a good day at school but we don't find out if he has to go to the school for geniuses or not and the book ends.

I gave the book 5 stars because it was funny and kept me entertained. I liked looking at the pictures while I read too because it helped me picture what was going on. It shows this month's theme of humor with some of the comments AJ makes and when he hypnotizes Andrea. It was funny when she talked back to the teacher, pulled the fire alarm and went on top of the school. I would recommend this book to kids, especially ones that like funny books.

This book is funny. Dr. Brad wants the kids to give their favorite toys to the other person and have the person give the toys back when they are done playing. All the girls brought dolls and the boys didn't have anything to do and they wanted to play war. And then the boys found a box of rubber bands and they used the rubber bands and threw them at the dolls on the other side of the table. Then the girls gave the action figures accessories. The book ends when the principal, the vice-principal and Dr. Brad and the narrator are playing ping-pong.

Terrible role modeling from our MC who hates girls, girly stuff, and anything to do with school. He calls other students nasty names (didn’t love explaining ‘brown-noser’ and why they aren’t allowed to call people that to my little brothers!) and the book uses every possible nasty word for people with mental health issues.
The whole series is “fun” for kids by teaching them how to be rude, unkind, and inconsiderate.
I’d have given it zero stars if that were an option.

This book has become one of my favorite books. This book is for fifth grade, at least I would say. This book is about a student name AJ who is test in so many different ways by his counselor `who believes he is a genius. the test that Dr. Brad are presenting to him are ordinary test that AJ are not use to. This book is an excellent book that I would defiantly read to my students in the future.

The boys and the girls are fighting because they hate each other, and Dr. Brad makes them bring toys to school the next day. They have to trade toys. The girls brought barbies and the boys brought action figures. The girls accessorized the action figures and the boys made the barbies have a rubber band war.

C'mon. If you're going to write a note to suggest that an adult read Dr. Brad's lines aloud, you've got to make his silly stereotypical Austrian accent consistent!

Ella Mentry School counselor Dr. Brad thinks A.J. may be a genius and gives him several tests to find out. They boys and girls are not getting along so the teacher makes them trade toys, the girls to boys and vice versa. The boys are devastated to get Barbies, until they decide to make a Barbie war!

Fun book we listened to in class together. The 4th graders loved it! Now we have to find books 1-6!

Although irreverent, there's a great example of a footnote using an * on page 7. I also loved the advice "So if you're not sure if something is good or bad, just say it's interesting." I might have a hard time being comfortable reading this aloud if only for the comment when the A.J. should be tested and he asks, "Do I have to pee into a cup?" I can see high school or even middle school student's getting this, but third or fourth graders?

OK! I'm liking it better after the paragraph that starts "Counselors are for kids who are differ-ent."(good example of how editors or publisers us a dash) and ends "In outher words, counselors are for everybody."

This story portrays Dr. Brad as the school counselor, but I think he is really the school psychologist as he is responsible for talking to kids who are different. "Like kids who are smarter or dumber than everybody else. Or kids who learn faster or slower than everybody else. Or kids who have problems."
A.J. writes some unusual poetry and the gifted and talented teacher, Ms. Coco, wonders if he is a genius and needs to attend Dirk (a school for the highly gifted). Dr. Brad is called upon to help evaluate A.J. and make the decision.
There are zany moments and the usual silliness and lots of ping pong. Yes ping pong . . . and I'm not going to tell you so get busy reading!

Dan Gutman understands young reader’s humor and has created a fantastic book formula to draw in even the most reluctant of readers. The My Weird School series is perfect for students to practice their reading skills with its repetitive yet hysterical narrative and story lines. But don’t mention that part to your kiddos, they might run away in fear they could learn something. A must have collection for any grade school library or classroom!

They said that because thought his poetry was brilliant. The one he wrote in the gifted and talented program at his school. They had him tested by Dr.Brad but them he goes too far.Can Aj stop things before it goes too far??Read the book to find out!!!!!!!!!!

I like Dr.Brad has gone mad because Dr.Brad tries to hypnotize A.J. but cannot. He makes girls play with action figures and boys play with barbies because he wanted them to learn to share. A.J. wrote a poem that makes the princapal and the gifted and talented teacher cry and gets tested. A.J. might get sent to dork school!
