The novel is bookended by Sergeant York's most famous engagement; in between, there is a thorough recounting and idealization of York's ancestors. The novel begins with the engagement for which York is famous. The battle is covered in thorough detail from the perspective of York. In the last chapter of the novel, the incident is presented through the diary entries of Sergeant York and the personal testimonials of the other American soldiers who witnessed the battle. Excerpts from York's diary dominate the final chapter. The bulk of the novel is meant to elevate the family history of the York family. Much of the York family reads like a fantasy of family history, including the white-washing of the family's deportment as slave owners.

A fascinating read! I heartedly enjoyed reading this memoir. Mr. Cowan did a wonderful job keeping consistent with the true nature of the time and country living. A clean read with only one swear word. (D-word ) I would have liked it to have been without any language but I was not the writer. Mr. York’s story is very inspiring and his faith very encouraging. A great biography to read for American Literature.

This book was written by man of similar background and culture to its subject, and provides great insight into their shared culture and values. Alvin York was possibly the most successful war hero of his nation's history, and it is his humility and devotion to his principles that come through most clearly in this book.

Liked this version, explained USA culture & times thru-out his lifetime. What he was before, during & after receiving medals is clearer. He remains the 'only' to accomplish this, unlike sports heroes (whose records come & go). Worth the read for a history reader.

Book differs in some details from the Sgt. York movie with Gary Cooper but adequately pays homage to a true American hero. It is well worth reading.
