There was something on the doormat. Something with big green eyes . . . Winnie and her black cat, Wilbur, are all tucked into bed when, suddenly, Wilbur is woken up by a strange noise. There's a baby dragon at the door! Soon Winnie finds her house filled with breaking bowls, armor clattering down the stairs, puffs of smoke . . . and even clouds of butterflies. What's a witch to do?
Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads database.
Valerie Thomas is the author of the bestselling and much loved Winnie the Witch picture books, illustrated by Korky Paul.
Valerie was born in Australia and has lived there for most of her life. Although she doesn’t have a broomstick, she has traveled to most parts of the world, and she is now trying to organize her life so that she never has to experience another winter. She used to live with a big black cat exactly like Wilbur, but luckily her house was not black.
The story is kind of flimsy, but the illustrations are awesome; especially the amusing and witty small details of the graphics that always give you something new to discover.
This is another exciting adventure of Winnie the Witch and her delightfully pretty (a euphemism if ever there was one!) cat Wilbur. This time they hear a noise downstairs, and investigating in trepidation they discover a baby dragon in their house who has climbed in through the cat flap as they are preparing to go to sleep. And the dragon is blowing smoke from its nostrils so they panic that the house may be set on fire.
Winnie has an idea, screams her magic word ABRACADABRA and the smoke ceases and out of dragons nostrils come a cloud of butterflies. This leads to chaos as Wilbur and the baby dragon chase the butterflies around the house, wrecking everything in their way. Winnie decides that the idea is not the best so she waves her wand, shouts her magic word again and the butterflies disappear and nothing comes out of the dragon's nose.
Winnie, who is keen to find the baby dragon's mother, is keener on getting to sleep but the dragon wants to play. So to prevent complete devastation of the house, Winnie decides that she should find the dragon's mother right away. Winnie gets a torch and goes onto the roof shouting 'Yoo, hoo' in the hope of attracting the mother.
Suddenly there is a flash of fire, which scares Wilbur almost to death, and the baby dragon shouts, 'Mamamamama' but somehow the mother doesn't see them. So Winnie waves her wand six times, shouts ABRACADABRA and an enormous moon pops up by the house to illuminate the scene. Mother swoops to pick up her baby but as she prepares to carry her away, Winnie uses her magic word once more to make smoke reappear from the baby dragon's nostrils and the couple fly away quite happily.
Winnie returns to bed and in half a minute she is snoring with Wilbur already fast asleep in his basket. When the sun rises the following morning, Winnie and Wilbur sleep on … probably dreaming of their next adventure!
This delightful couple certainly are pure magic and although not the most exciting of Winnie's stories, the beautiful illustrations by Korky Paul keep the book in the upper bracket.
Retiring to bed exactly as the clock strikes twelve - midnight being the proper bedtime for all witches - Winnie and her cat Wilbur are soon fast asleep. But when a strange noise in the garden awakens Wilbur, and he goes to investigate, a most unexpected guest finds his way into the house, causing chaos and destruction. Can Winnie, now roused herself, solve the problem by waving her wand? Will the baby dragon's mother arrive in time to prevent her offspring from burning the house down? It's another wacky adventure for witch and cat!
I enjoyed Winnie's Midnight Dragon - the third "Winnie the Witch" adventure I have read from Australian author Valerie Thomas and British illustrator Korky Paul - immensely. The story is a lot of fun, and the illustrations are humorous and appealing. I particularly liked the scene in which the baby dragon starts puffing butterflies! Like the other titles in the series, this would make the ideal gift for young readers who like a "gentler" witch tale.
I just adore these Winnie (the witch) and Wilbur (her cat) stories. This is the third one I’ve read and unfortunately may be the last; the rest of the picture book series is hard to find.
This is another charming Winner & Wilbur book. I enjoy both characters. The story of a baby dragon finding its way into Winnie & Wilbur’s house at night, but lost from its mother is cute and amusing, though a bit thin. I love Winnie’s solutions to problems though. What to do about the smoke/flames coming out of the dragon’s mouth, the baby dragon’s innocent play that is destructive nonetheless, finding the mother dragon? The spell to make butterflies come out of the dragon’s mouth was so cute.
I love the illustrations; they’re so full of color, detail, and humor.
I really appreciated that the inside front and back covers were created by two different ten year old artists, apparently from the Western Academy in Beijing, China. Those two illustrations are colored drawings?/paintings? on a black background.
A cute story about a witch and her, complete with a baby dragon causing chaos at 12 o' clock. It's a perfect Halloween story to read during the season. The drawings are fun and quirky with hidden details that are fun to explore.

Another zany adventure featuring charming Winnie and her adorable black cat! This time, they must try to return a lost dragon to its mother--and try to keep it from playfully wreaking havoc in the meantime!
I wavered between three and four stars on this one. It didn't WOW me like the first Winnie story did--I guess I just wasn't that captivated by the storyline--but the characters are still fun, the baby dragon is adorable, and this is a nice read for those of us who like our Halloween-y books on the cute-and-nice (rather than scary) side!
OMG I loved the illustrations!!! The style fit perfectly with the witchy theme.
A witch and her cat go to sleep when a baby dragon finds its way to her house. She tries to keep him amused by making butterflies come out of his nose but he causes chaos in the house so they go out and find the dragon's mama. Once they do the witch takes her cat back home and they go back to sleep.

It’s a cute story for older children perhaps second grade of so. Cute storyline and well illustrated Couldn’t hold the attention span of young children in preK or kindergarten in large groups likely
I read this book as a fan of Korky Paul's illustrations. I love the Winnie series and the delightful character of Winnie the witch and her pet cat. There are lots of rich details in the illustrations and the house she lives in is quite fun and imaginative. I like the old time / old school technology feel of her stately manner that is quite witch-like. In this book her cat has a humorous central role. Lots of fun to read!
My mum bought me the full set of Winnie the Witch books for Halloween one year, as I loved them so much.
It's great that I can read them by myself now, but I used to love having them read to me, over and over again, when I was three (so my mum says, I can't really remember).
Beautiful illustrations. The storylines were suited to me when I was much younger, but as a 7 year old, I find them good for an nice easy read
I bought this story to read to my first grde placement and they thought that it was super funny. A witch gets a vist from a dragon in the middle of the night. The dragon causes so much damage to her house that she decides to get rid of it. I would recommend using this book just for fun or in the safe place.
Winnie has another adventure - this time she is dealing with a naughty baby dragon that has got in through Wilbur's cat flap! This is a good one to read out loud - the story isn't groundbreaking, but there are lots of opportunities for children to join in with wand waving etc - also I had a good discussion after reading this about different animals and fantasy creatures with the children.
Silly story. The illustrations are interesting with black and white and minimal color that highlights action and tidbits you may not have noticed. One page spread is turned long which makes it hard to read aloud/share.
