Xantho and Penelope are slaves with the great Persian army of Cyrus the Great. Suddenly Xantho and a bunch of slaves are attacked by the Massagetae on the Scythian steppe. Xantho escapes, and goes back to warn his father, a Lord in the army(more on that in the book). The story moves on quickly to find Xantho and a slave girl Penelope, suddenly offered their freedom in the Persian army as part of an elite group. But why? What can two slave offer to a group of Immortals. Its a well crafted story, with a couple of twists. Looking forward to the next instalment.

I won this book on a goodreads giveaway and couldn't be more thrilled that I did! It is the absolute best when you discover a great Author who's books you connect with. I am excited to dive into the next book. What a cliffhanger!! I found this book to be rich in history without being dry. It was a slower read but still lots of action. As I was reading I found myself intermittently researching because I wanted to know more and more about this time, which I knew very little about before starting this book. Even though the subject, setting, and period are completely different, the way this book reads reminded me so much of Bernard Cornwell's "The Winter King". I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Cornwell or who enjoys dense but readable action-packed historical fiction / historical fantasy. I liked the story but the main character wining about be a slave the whole book was a little much!! It got so bad i almost stop reading it acouple time but I believe if theirs ever a book two it will get a lot better. So yeah that’s why the three stars.

Wow! Incredibly entertaining and exciting!
From the very first pages, the story explodes off the pages to transport the reader into a world of magic and battle. Great story telling and characters in this tale of good versus evil over thousands of years. Can’t wait for the next book.

Surprisingly entertaining historical fantasy. Read through Kindle Unlimited - was a good choice. It is a period(s) of history I don't know much about but the story appears very well researched. Smooth writing style that keeps your attention right through. His later Viking books are very good - will be following this author. Recommended.

This is the start of a series written almost 2 years ago with no mention of a book 2 in sight. Xantho, (my opinion) in the first 2/3 of the book was a weakling, a slave who was to chicken to fight. But finally the death of a friend forced him into the warrior he is ( today), but since he is a time traveler today is irrelevant.

An intruiging & enthralling read.
This was a wonderful read, it’s miraculous how Gibbons blends real historical stories with a tale of Gods and man. Genius! Can’t wait for the next in this series.

Great fun.
I really enjoyed this book. I'm not one for magic and mages usually but, I read this because it was written by Peter Gibbons. I'm loving his historical fiction novels, they are truly awesome and decided to give this a try. Thoroughly good read.

Not quite Peter Gibbons usual standards. I felt the story laboured in places and ran out of energy toward the end. I usually love his books, but not quite up to par in this one unfortunately.
