Marshall Cavendish is an ex-Special Forces operative who is a shadow of his former self. For the past two years, he’s been fighting a mystery illness that the doctors have no answers for despite all possible avenues being explored.

Aaron West is the Alpha of the West Mill Pack, whose health is slowly deteriorating. When the Pack doctor tells him he’s found a human with the same symptoms, and he’s bringing him home to run tests, Aaron tries not to get his hopes up a cure will finally be found.

When Marshall and Aaron meet, there is a connection like no other – a rare, once-in-a-generation soul bond that needs to be sealed for them to regain full health. Together they must navigate an uncharted path as Marshall’s human body struggles to accept the shifter bond and whether his growing feelings for Aaron are real or a result of the soul bond.

New-to-me author Zoe Piper took a favourite trope (fated mates) and did something unique and fun with it here in her M/M urban fantasy book Soul Bound.

The story follows Marshall, a human ex-Special Forces leader, who enjoys a productive post-military life running a chain of mixed martial arts gyms with his life-long shifter bestie. That is until, inexplicably, Marshall’s health starts to rapidly decline, causing increased physical weakness and chronic pain, that grows steadily more intense as the months turn into years, with little to no understanding or aid from the myriads of medical professionals he’s sort out in that time.

With a bit of right-place-right-time serendipity, Marshall is overheard discussing his health woes by a bear shifter doctor, who claims his werewolf Alpha has been suffering the exact same mysterious illness, quickly requesting Marshall accompany him back to pack territory where the doc can run some new tests with both patients present.

With nothing left to lose, Marshall heads to the West Mill Pack where he meets their gorgeous by deteriorating alpha, Aaron West. After a string of fascinating physical reactions, seemingly brought on by Marshall and Aaron’s new proximity, a sassy older pack psychic proclaims the two men share a very rare and very precious mate bond, referred to as a soul bond, explaining that the distance between them must be the cause of their recent health issues.

Together—with a bit of forced proximity that’s not actually forced—Marshall and Aaron learn as much as they can about the special bond they share, from how it works and how it affects them both differently, as werewolf and human, to what it will mean for them both once they inevitably consummate the mating and seal the bond as it’s meant to be.

This story had a lot of the tropes and themes I purposefully seek out in my M/M romance reading. There was a ton of delicious hurt-comfort and plenty of growly protectiveness, and I most definitely loved the pack dynamics at play here, with how welcoming everyone was to Marshall and his tag-along bestie, Saint.

I especially went feral over the fact that this werewolf romance featured TWO ALPHA MEN. Sure, one was a literal alpha werewolf, but usually when that’s the case, you get a more “omega” style second MC, with a more yin and yang vibe to the dynamic. Here, human Marshall was just as strong, kick-ass, and capable as Aaron—maybe even more so. He just oozed competence and steadiness, and a calm and measured intelligence that suited his nature as a true leader. Sexually speaking, this was a lot of fun to watch play out in the dynamic between the two men, making me realise it’s super far and few between that a story of this nature features two alpha-type characters in the lead roles. I kind of LOVED it, not gonna lie.

Most of all, I appreciated how—even with the acknowledgment of the rare mate bond—the MCs didn’t simply go from strangers to madly in love at first glance, as you often find in books with such themes. Instead, their relationship progression had semi slow-burn vibes to it, as they took their instant attraction and cultivated it into a strong emotional bond that left me smiling and satisfied.

There was some secondary plot action with a contemptuous pack member trying to de-throne Alpha Aaron, which led to some short-lived excitement and some brief higher stakes, but generally speaking, the story was very mellow, filled with loveable side characters and great banter, as Marshall and Aaron learn to navigate their new identities as fated mates.

Alarmingly, this series-starter was released nearly 3 years ago, with no sign of a sequel (to date). I was generally bereft when I realised there wasn’t already a sequel (or more) for me to gobble up, because, holy smokes, do a few of these secondary characters deserve a chance to shine in the spotlight. Hopefully something happens on that front in the near future, but if not, I have absolutely no regrets about reading this (potentially one-off) enjoyably unique, sweetly romantic, hurt-comfort drenched PNR romance. It was a fun ride.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

He reached out for Aaron, wanting to reassure himself that the other man was okay. He froze as his fingers met soft fur rather than warm skin. He opened his eyes and looked to his left. Lying beside him was a wolf. A beautiful dark gray wolf whose ears twitched as Marshall ran his hand over his head and down his flank. Well, that explained why he was so warm.

This one was fun and low angst. The premise of it really intrigued me as I’ve never read a book quite like it before, where two fated mates *almost* meet but don’t connect, and slowly get sick from being apart. That part was really interesting, and the final few chapters were really entertaining. Unfortunately it was quite slow and repetitive for a large chunk of the book. Nothing really wrong with it, I just got bored.

The spice was good and the couple felt ‘truly’ versatile, where they both enjoyed topping and bottoming equally, which made me realize I don’t read that a lot. There was also a cute scene where they cuddle while Aaron is in wolf form, which was cute.

“Let me guess. Slow but steady weight and muscle mass loss? Crippling pain that started out as an ache but is now to the point where no painkiller can help? Headaches that can take you out for days?”

“Once you’ve met with Aaron and the Pack Elders, you’re more than welcome to shift, Mr. Sinclair, and enjoy our facilities.,” Anna told him. “Umm, thank you,” Saint replied. Marshall nudged him in the ribs, and Saint smirked at him. Give the man a body of water, and he’d be in it all day. Give him a box, and well, you’d never know that Saint was a bad-ass ex-Special Forces operator.

Soul Bound was an interesting first book in the West Mill Pack series. We have Marshall, a human, and Aaron, an Alpha Wolf Shifter, who pass each other by at a club on New Year's Eve and, unbeknownst to them, create a soul bound. Two years later, they meet again and find out that they are fated mates.

Overall I did enjoy it. I love shifter, fated mates romances, so that was a positive check on my end. This was very much insta-love, and while it was low angst, there were moments of "is this true love or are these feelings due to the bond?" from Marshall's end.

There was good world-building, and the side character - Saint, Rafe, Davy, and others - were interesting.

There was some spice, but I would say it was low-medium. I tend to like high spice in my shifter romances, so that dimmed the enjoyment for me. Overall it was a good start to the series! (3.5 Stars rounded up to 4).

4.5 stars. I don’t remember why I picked this book up as it’s not one I usually go for but I wanted to clear up some books on my KU so I picked this one to read. I’m so glad I did because I really loved this story. It is my first by this author but I absolutely would read more by them in the future.

This story has such an interesting concept and it was really neat seeing Marshall and Aaron slowly start to feel better as their soul bond grew between them. I had no trouble believing their relationship or anything else in this story as it was shifters and fated mates! I really liked both of the characters and how they had to rework the world they knew to fit with their new mate!

This story was a little slow at times but overall I really enjoyed it! You can’t go wrong with possessiveness and jealousy from an Alpha and their Alpha-Mate putting them in their place! And of course some snuggly shifter cuddles! I definitely recommend this story!

This is like most the M/M books I have read over the past couple of years. An interesting idea that meets awful execution. The writing is amateur hour from the bad fanfiction pile. So much explaining, so much exposition and yet a coherent story never forms.

I finished it for the tropes: The hurt/comfort aspect delivers, there's some decent heat between the main characters even if the actual smut was more meh.

It is clear that this is a set-up for a new series since I can already guess who the next pairing will be. I don't think I will read that one though

Soul Bound is the first book in the West Mill Pack series, and it shows all the trademarks of being an introductory book, as there seems to be more focus on introducing a cast of characters than there is on the plot. In a world of shifters, fae, vampires, humans, gargoyles, and witches, we’re introduced to at least one of each — especially since the West Mill Pack is all inclusive. The world building is nicely slid into story exposition, with talks about Stone City, supernaturals versus humans, and a great war all happening within the framework of whether Marshall may or may not be fully human.

Well, this was very cute.
Light-hearted and sweet, it's the perfect kind of insta-love romance that doesn't feel too rushed, but instead wholesome and earnest and a tiny bit spicy.

I must admit, my favourite thing about this novel was definitely the side characters: I absolutely adored the found family atmosphere Zoe Piper has managed to create among the West Mill Pack and I absolutely adored Saint, Blake, Rafe, Sam and Josh (also: Saint and Rafe's antagonist dynamic has me in a CHOKEHOLD. I need them to be together).

The romance wasn't completely my cup of tea: I love shifter romances, especially when there are alpha/beta/omega dynamics. This isn't an omegaverse novel, I knew that before I started this, but I was still a tiny bit disappointed with the way Aaron and Marshall's dynamic was portrayed.
I think my previous experiences with any type of romance featuring Alphas as MCs have spoilt me a little: I would have LOVED to see Aaron display a bit more of his Alpha-ness, in regards to Marshall and to the Pack too. But, nevermind.

On the other hand, I loved the whole subplot about the soul bond and the way both Marshall and Aaron were affected by it: it's made me curious to see if other novels exist with a similar plot (a medical condition connected to a separation between fated mates), and I definitely want to see what will happen next, if other characters will develop a soul bond too.

Individually, I liked both main characters, but again, I was way more interested in the others around them, because they seemed much more vivid and interesting. This is 100% a personal preference, because both Aaron and Marshall are too similar and too alike to each other to really hold my interest (I'm a sucker for a good ol' opposites attract); but I'm sure other readers will love this novel more than me for the same reason.

So yes, regardless of some minor issues I had, I'd totally recommend this cute as hell romance: I'm very curious to discover what will happen next with the West Mill Pack.

Thank you GRR for the ARC. I received it in exchange for an honest review.

Marshall Cavendish, a former Special Forces operative, is suffering from a debilitating disease that no one can explain. Aaron West, Alpha of the West Mills Pack, appears to be suffering from the same thing. When the pack doctor discovers Marshall, he asks him to come to the pack so he can run tests. When the two meet, there is an instant connection. In fact, they have a once-in-a-generation soul bond. But, in addition to their health issues, Marshall struggles to cope with a shifter bond and the thoughts that his feelings may not be real.

I really enjoyed this story. The two men had never met before but must have brushed by each other at a club unknowingly starting the bond. It was an intriguing concept. We get to see these two once vibrant men return to that state, with a few problems along the way. There was a bit more going on with jealous relatives and some super-hot sexy shifters. Not only were there great heroes, but the side characters were also incredible. Saint, Blake, Rafe and even Aaron’s brother could use their own story. We have many more wonderful stories to look forward to.

This was perfect for me ... could be that it just fit the moment but I nevertheless completely enjoyed it .

Marshall and Aaron are just perfect together. They are both Alpha males, which I totally loved, and are acting accordingly. Often in such cases one starts submitting, which doesn't always fit the characters. But here, both know, respect and love the ability of their mate to protect each other and themselves.

I really liked how open they were regarding their feelings and their relationship and how they coped with the suddenness of their connection and some doubts.

Also perfect were the secondary characters. Saint is a great friend and I can't wait to get to see him mated. Hopefully that is the next book.

I kind of hope that he and Rafe will be a couple ... but maybe it will be together with Blake ... and I am not quite sure if I would like that

All in all this was the a great read for me and I hope the next book will come out soon.

An ARC was provided by GRR and I am happy to give my honest opinion

But.
I loved the premise of this story.
Apart from having a soft spot for M/M shifter reads and fated mates, I thought the idea of both protagonist being weakened and ill was interesting
.
Usually with these kind of stories, the Alpha is typically the very epitome of power. And his mate is (albeit strong-willed) usually physically weak and reliant on his stronger mate. But not only were both Marshall and Aaron physically weak at the onset, Marshall wasn't an omega and he was an ex Special Forces Operative, in top physical form before his illness, and a martial art expert.
So I went in to this read with pretty high expectations.

It starts out with a prologue of sorts, were the circumstance that sets everything in motion is described through Marshall's viewpoint. Then it jumps forward to present day where Marshall has become ill. A fluke encounter brings Marshall's unknown affliction to the attention of Aaron's physician, and Marshall is whisked off to the Pack territory and the Pack house.

The writing is technically well-done. The POV shift between Marshall and Aaron. But the story arc is, well, not particularly interesting and the pacing doesn't help one bit.

When Marshall arrives at the Pack house it pretty soon becomes apparent that both the guys benefits physically from being close to each other. Also, that they have an unfinished “soul bond”. But then the story stalls entirely.
It goes something like this: The guys spend some time together, then there's a meeting with some folks where they discuss what a soul bond means. Then it's time for bed and the next day it's just wash, rinse, repeat, some time spent together followed by another meeting. I got so sick of those meetings. They never amounted to anything and didn't bring the story forward. After what felt like eons, Marshall and Aaron completed their bond (well effing finally!). And, whaddayouknow, they got healthy all of a sudden. That was approximately at the same time as the 75% blow-up happened. And can you guess how that “drama” was resolved? By an effing meeting!
Now, I stopped reading at 77% so, in all fairness, the story might pick up there at the end. The bad guy might even come back for a final show-down, but I just couldn't make myself stay engaged at that point.

So this story was most certainly not for me. But I guess if you like low-angst and don't require much in terms of storyline, then this book might be something for you.

The good
+ How honest they were with each other, and how well they communicated
+ Aaron wearing his heart on his sleeve around Marshall
+ Saint, Rafe and Blake
+ The equality in their relationship. Yes, Marshall had to push Aaron a little every now and then to remind him of this, but Aaron being an Alpha had no impact whatsoever on their relationship dynamics, which is perfect
+ Aaron being so open and honest about his feelings
+ Marshall's ability to protect Aaron (and vice versa)
+ Marshall taking care of Aaron after his injury
+ Aaron being a big-ass pouting puppy
+ Cuddles being the solution to everything

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o The part where Aaron actually met Marshall's parents for the first time was glossed over, while I really wanted to read that part

The bad
- Marshall started wondering which feelings were his, and which were just the bond talking, before they sealed their soul bond. Then afterwards, he started really considering this and doubting. That was really unfair to Aaron, and it hurt him a lot
- Aaron's mom kept pushing her own wishes regarding the bonding ceremony. The ceremony that was about Marshall and Aaron, not about Aaron's mom

I loved the characters in this book, both the MCs and their friends. I have high hopes for the sequel, but I won't share them, so I don't run the risk of my wishes not coming true. But I sense a lot of badass characters getting their own stories, which I'll definitely read. I'd recommend this book if you're looking for a low angst shifter story with two equally badass main characters.

Generally good, but not completely satisfying

This story had some good moments, as well as plenty that were less than stellar and plain tedious. After an unrecognized encounter at a crowded party, both Aaron and Marshall start weakening. Or was there something more nefarious going on? We’re never really told for sure one way or another. That’s a plot loophole I wish had been addressed and either tied in to some big plot against Aaron’s pack or dismissed. The subplot with Aaron’s cousin was also littered with ignored possibilities (and perhaps tied back with the initialization of their bond) that could have strengthened the story. Another irritant to me was the big production that seemed to be necessary for making the one hour trip between pack and city. Where I live, that’s considered a reasonable commute between various suburbs, so why should it require so much planning and overnight stays? Finally, there was a fair amount of tedium which either could have been trimmed/condensed for brevity or exchanged for scenes that might have added interest/intrigue, especially in the middle half of the book.

On the positive side, I enjoyed so many of the characters introduced here. Aaron and Marshall were both strong men and Alphas in their own ways despite one being a wolf shifter and the other human, so they had to figure out how to function as equals and compromise. There was an equally strong cast of secondary characters, from the pack elders to Saint, Josh, and the Toxic Twins. There’s certainly plenty of options for continuing the series, so I have hope the plotting will improve and perhaps some of the overlooked bits get addressed.

Soul Bound gave me everything I like in a good shifter book: pack community, shifting, angst, villain, connection, non-verbal communication, family togetherness, spicy times, and possessiveness. This book had it all and then some. I love naughty little grandmothers so really enjoyed Alice.

I like that this book had a variety of shifter types and that humans and shifters exist in the same areas, with it just being a way of life. I also like the concept of the soul bond. There was one thing that was never explained in the book. The characters were all puzzled by it and how it could have happened. The reader was given an indication about it in the prologue, but then it was never confirmed, not even in a moment of realization by the characters. I would have liked that bit of confirmation, for both the reader and the characters. I also would have liked to know what kind of shifter was identified in the DNA test. These are minor things that did not destroy the power of the story.

Aaron and Marshall were wonderful and they had a great supporting cast. I am intrigued by several of the guys and would love to know more about them - Josh, Davy, Saint and the twins.

I’d been ready for a good shifter book that has just the right amount of angst, but is loaded with possessiveness, and Soul Bound delivered.

Hoping For More

This book was really sweet and a lot of fun as a starting book in this world. I loved the progression of the relationship between the MCs and how a chance encounter two years before, ultimately brings them together.

The way this book started and built the story was really interesting and unique to read. I love a good shifter romance with fated mates but this take on it was great!

I enjoyed the couple and how the book progressed but I do wish there had been more of the couple doing couple things and really showing their bond beyond the spicy stuff or the fated mates stuff. I also didn’t love that a lot of their relationship moved quickly despite them only basing it on the pull of fated mates and not because of actual fully fledged feelings.

The side characters were really fun to read and definitely left a lot of opportunities for future stories in this universe. As far as I can tell, nothing more has been written with these characters but hopefully someday Piper will decide more characters from this book deserve their HEA as well.

ARC received from GRR for an honest review.

Marshall is a human that has been suffering from a mystery illness for two years. While in a coffee shop he's discussing his prognosis with his best friend and business partner when a stranger interrupts to say his alpha is suffering from the same illness and would he allow an examination to see if it's the same illness. When Marshall meets Aaron the West Mill pack's alpha, he immediately feels a connection. Marshall and Aaron start to feel better the longer they spend time together but the minute Marshall leaves the pack to go tend to his business they are both immediately back to square one with their illness. Members of the pack have an explanation for what's going on with these two and it's a surprise to most of their friends and family.

This is a nice story but I felt like it dragged in places and I had a hard time continuing to read it. The little bit of drama from Aaron's cousin is short and wrapped up too easily. I wanted more chemistry and time with the two MC's building on their relationship. Overall an ok shifter/human romance but nothing really exciting or new.

Seriously, some thunderbolt! New Years Eve, while out celebrating, Aaron and Marshall, casually made anonymous physical contact. Two years later, Alpha Aaron, wolf, is suffering from an unexpected unexplained debilitating mysterious illness. He is loosing touch with his wolf and considering his options moving forward. Marshall is ex Special Forces who, for 2 years has suffered from a mysterious illness that is draining his essence. He and his partner, Saint, tiger shifter, had opened mixed martial art gyms and were finally finding success. He was ready to change his life and settle down. Then he fell ill. When these two met, there was an extreme physical reaction. Symptoms were a mystery. Good story flow. Will the doc, mage and seer find the answer to the ailment? Will they find a cure in time? Will Aaron keep his pack? Excellent story with a great mystery. I like the world building. The supporting family and characters are excellent. This is an exciting story. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a relatively quick sweet read. So we have Aaron who is the alpha of the West Mill Pack and he has been struck down by a depilating disease which no one can figure why or how to treat him. Marshall is a human who happens to have the same disease. When the pack doctor overhears Marshall talking to his best friend & business partner, he invites them to come to the pack so he can do some testing. When Marshall & Aaron see each other, there is an instant attraction. As our MC's start to get to know each other, they find out the what is behind their illness. Also we do have a minor betrayal happening & I would have liked that to have been fleshed out a little more. I can't wait to see where the author takes Saint & Rafe, I love them. My only real issue is that I would have liked a little more "alphaness" on the part of Aaron.

Soul Bound was an overally fun-sweet read. Aaron is the Alpha of West Mill Pack and Marshall a human running his gym with his best friend are both suffering from a strange illness and them being brought together leads to a beautiful love story. I loved that this book was unique in how the insta-soulmates thing was brought out.

These two were perfect for each other and the writer managed to bring out a relationship where the human wasn't seen as lower in their relationship. I would have loved to get more of Aaron and Marshall as a couple and more of them running the pack together but I still loved what we got . The found family for Marshall and Saint was amazing and even the little bit fights we had just made it better. Fingers crossed the next book is Saint's or Rafe's....even better them together 🤭.

Great start to a new series.

Aaron, a wolf shifter is the Alpha of the West Mill pack whilst Marshall, a human is ex military. Both are suffering from the same debilitating mystery illness and a chance encounter has them coming together at the pack house.

So begins their return to health but not without a hiccup or two along the way. It just so happens that these two wonderful characters are also not just mates but also they are uniquely soul bound. As their connection deepens they do need to overcome the logistics of being together, their relationship to each other and to the pack. Of course there’s plenty of chemistry leading to steamy times on the way to their HEA.

I was fully engaged with this book from start to finish and the interesting cast of side characters have me looking forward to more in the series.

This book was surprisingly good and it’s a different take on fated mates and shifters. Marshall and Aaron are both suffering from the same debilitating systems and, unbeknownst to them, they have the same cause. An incomplete soulbond. One chance encounter has led them to this place and now they have to figure out how to make it work. I loved these characters and their best friends and pack mates. It was really good. It isn’t all 100% instant lust and love for these two. Marshall is afraid of giving up his independence and his job, as well as being thought of as weaker. Aaron is Alpha and used to everyone going along with what he says. They have to figure out how to make it work when one of them is human and they both have busy lives. I wouldn’t mind more stories from this pack. Hint hint…especially the twins.

Unique twist on fated mates

Zoe Piper took shifters and pack dynamics to a whole new level. Aaron is a wolf shifter and the alpha of his pack but has been ill with all kinds of crazy symptoms. Marshall is human and ex Special Forces but has also been plagued with the same illness as Aaron. When they meet for the first time, the pack seer realizes they are Soul Bound. This was a fascinating and unique version of fated mates. I liked how Marshall and Aaron got to know each other and strengthened their bond, with a few hiccups of course. It was a nice change of pace that Marshall didn't just submit to his alpha but stood his ground as an equal. I also liked that the pack was a mixture of all types of shifters and paranormal beings. I loved Saint, Rafe, and Blake, and really hope they each get their own stories.

I really love this story. Marshall Cavendish doesn't realize, when he feels that electric shock when he's touched in the club, that his soul has found its mate. But two years later, when he meets the shifter to whom he is bound, the love that grows between them is a delight to read. Even though, in terms of time, this story might qualify as insta-love, I believe, because of how the author builds the whole mythos of the soul bond, that what Marshall and West Mill Pack Alpha Aaron West come to feel for each other is real and true and will withstand every test, including all the ones that are thrown their way. Part of the reason that their love is credible is precisely because so many obstacles come in the way of their mating. I've finally started a "Books I Will Re-Read" list, and this one is definitely on it!

Aaron, a wolf shifter, is the pack's Alpha, while Marshall, a human and ex millitary. They happen to have the same mysterious and severe condition, and a chance meeting at the pack house brings them together.

Their road to recovery has begun, but it won't be easy. These two exceptional people happen to be more than just soul mates; they share a bond that no other couple has. As their bond grows stronger, they'll have to work through the challenges of living as a unit, both individually and as a part of the pack. They have a lot of chemistry, so there are some hot scenes on the route to happily ever after.

The novel had me interested the entire time, and the ancillary characters are what made me want to continue reading the series.

This is a new author to me but I thought I should give it a try.

Both Marshal and Aaron have faced the same problem regarding their deteriorating health for two years. By chance, the pack doctor overhears that Marshall has the same symptoms and decides to bring him back to pack land where he meets Aaron. What I liked here is that it was not the typical insta-love and everything is good from this point on. Yes, they are fated mates but they have still been apart for 2 years after a chance meeting and they need to get to know each other while their bodies can slowly recover.
There was not a lot of angst in this book so it is really good as a nice read in between. I would definitely recommend reading this if you like shifter romances.

Fantastic Read!

If you enjoy shifter novels, you’re going to really love this one! Often, shifter stories follow a similar thread, but this one looks at a shifter/human relationship from an angle I’ve never seen before. From the first page to the end, Aaron and Marshall’s story is intriguing and fresh. This refreshing angle creates a universe I enjoyed getting lost in. I hope we get to see more of this particular universe!

Now I need to not only reread this story (when I really get absorbed into a story, I tend to read faster than I should and have to reread to see what I’ve missed), but also check out other stories by this author! If she has other stories written as well as this one is, I’m going to have to add her to my list of favorite authors!
