In this sizzling Regency romance by USA Today Bestselling author Charlie Lane, a lady with a secret runs from the gentleman who loves her.
She’s not who she says she is.
Shadows, secrets, and Jackson Cavendish—all things Miss Gwendolyn Smith runs from. She’s determined to live a life of obscurity, studying dusty tomes. Better that steady present than her haunting past or a future she cannot have. When a letter arrives that threatens her secrets and Jackson tells her he’s done waiting, she must choose—face her past and gain a future? Or continue running from both.
He fell first, but he’ll win at last.
Mr. Jackson Cavendish has chased Gwendolyn for six years but only caught her once. In Paris at midnight. He’ll never forget what she felt like in his arms. And he’s determined to repeat the experience. Every night for the rest of their lives. But how to convince the woman he loves to trust him with her secrets?
He's tried seduction. He's tried retreat. Now he'll have to reveal his own fears and secret guilt.
When these two scholars must dig into their own pasts, they’ll learn how to build a future from it or lose each other forever.
The plot and main characters are a little too formulaic… there is nothing that really stands out or brings something new etc. It is too similar to /reminiscent of many other historical romance books… so it kind of blends into the crowd.
A little disjointed and confusing start to the plot/story. (A part in the beginning of the book/plot is written so it seems like the main characters are strangers and not friends.)
Repetitive.
The romantic build-up and chemistry was OK…. but a little too slow in making emotional progress.
Once in a while, you pick up a book that makes you wonder who this author is, and why you haven't had the opportunity to fall in love with them before-- and then be glad that you haven't, because now you can go and read everything else they've ever written and fall in love over and over again. This month Charlie Lane is that author for me, and this little gem of a book was a delightful introduction to her and her work.
The basic premise of Love a Lady at Midnight is simple enough: Gwendolyn and Jackson have been working together for 6 years. They've been in love with one another for most of that time, though he's a great deal more obvious about it than she is. The book opens with them finally indulging their more carnal desires before taking a huge step backwards, despite it being obvious to everyone, including both of them, that they are mad for one another. Gwendolyn steps back because she's running from a past of accidental bigamy and is terrified of hurting Jackson and his family if this comes to light. Jackson only steps back because he knows Gwendolyn wants that-- he doesn't know why.
Where Lane really shines compared to other authors in the historical romance genre is in her characterizations. Gwendolyn and Jackson are the chef's kiss of historical romance characters. Jackson is wildly passionate, but also steady-- he knows what he wants, he sticks to what he wants, and he is willing to do anything to get it. But he's also able to change his plans and adapt when it seems necessary, without sacrificing any of the passion and emotion that make him so wonderful. He's incredibly patient, loyal, and devoted, which is exactly what Gwendolyn needs.
For her part Gwendolyn is an extremely intelligent, strong, and talented woman, but she's so haunted by her past that when the book opens she's a shell of who she could be. Watching her gain confidence and come into her own as a woman who is unafraid to face who she is, what she's done, and what she wants is an incredibly rewarding experience. The reactions of those around her to her past were masterfully done, and no minor character was wasted in this book. From the innocent questions of children about Gwendolyn and Jackson's obvious unresolved sexual tension to the truly heart-warming relationship between Jackson's uncle and aunt everyone played their part exquisitely and left me with warm feelings not only toward Gwendolyn and Jackson, but toward everyone else too.
The romance was incredibly well executed. You could really feel the years of history between these two characters, and how much deeper and sweeter all of that history made their connection. I also loved that the hero was a virgin-- I'm not a big fan of that trope, but Lane didn't unnecessarily lean into it, it was just presented as a fact, and he was a fully competent lover regardless.
I won't lie-- the ending here is obvious almost before the story has begun, but it doesn't even matter because it's SO delightful watching both Gwen and Jackson do the hard work necessary to get their happy ending.
I'd recommend this to anyone who loves historical romance, you won't be disappointed by this poignant love story.

I was really intrigued by the blurb and cover on this book and have been meaning to read one of Charlie Lane's books for a while now. It was a strong start on the first chapter, and there was a nice push and pull to Gwendolyn and Jackson, but then things started to go a little downhill for me. First of all, the way the first chapter is written you would believe that they don't know each other at all. That he just sees her, is attracted to her, and follows her. That's not the case. They are friends and Jackson has been in love with her for years, but after a night of passion together, Gwendolyn puts back up the wall she uses to protect herself. That sort of threw me for a loop, but I let that go. Then the story got super slow, and I found myself really struggling with the pacing and the writing that by the end of it I was just completely over it. There was nothing new or different about this story, and it felt like tons of other historical romances out there with nothing to stand out to me at all. I will probably forget most of it within a few days. I am not sure if I would pick up another by her.
I decided to review this book based entirely on its cover. I like regency romances anyway, but I recognized the cover artist and then decided to give the book a try.
Gwendolyn Smith has been on the run and is determined to live a life of obscurity until a letter arrives that threatens her secrets. Jackson Cavendish has chased Gwendolyn for six years and wants her to trust him, especially after a one night stand at a masquerade. She’s emotionally distant and he’s hung up on her.
I liked the author’s writing style and the plot is a good one. I just thought the way we backed into their backstories was clunky and it took too long to make emotional progress, although it ended well. I think reading this series in order might help, because then you’d know the side characters who are distracting from getting to the meat of Gwen and Jackson’s story. I would definitely read the first in the series or another series by this author.

And he’s determined to repeat the experience. Every night for the rest of their lives. The fourth book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own I feel that to fully appreciate it the series would be best read in order. A well written book that flowed well & the characters were well portrayed. I loved Jackson who never gave up on Gwen, he was so caring, understanding, loving & above all patient. I had a harder time loving Gwen who I felt had got things out of proportion but once she moved forward I loved the change in her. I loved their journey to a HEA, which certainly wasn’t easy as there were twists & surprises along the way but it did make for an interesting read My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Such pure delightful anguish! Gwendolyn’s story is fraught with sadness, truly beautiful bitter sorrow… as we know there will of course be a rainbow after her storm. The analogy of her being the moon to Jackson’s sun is fitting as she shrouds herself in darkness to keep her past at bay. Living with such fears overhead, she cannot help but push people away thinking to protect them. The Cavendish family is not like most though. They are pure goodness and know the power of love and support, something Gwendolyn has not experienced in her life. The relationship between Gwen and Lord Eadon is enough to break your heart in the best ways, he truly is the father she should have had. The mystery that surrounds her keeps you glued to the page, much like Jackson, trying to guess what secrets hold her. I love the symbolism throughout this story, from the walls of thorns she erects to keep people out to the dragon hoard her emotions. It truly brings Gwendolyn’s character to life. A wonderful story of found family come to life. Charlie Lane writes such beautifully artistic words, painting a vivid picture of a story in your mind.

It's somewhat mysterious. Charlie Lane is a good author. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
This is the 4th book of The Cavendish series, it can be read as stand alone. My first in this series and this book is good. The cover on this book was soo beautiful, it is get my attention first and then description.
Gwendolyn past make her run, scandal ruin her name, make her fear of commitment, she scare of failure again, thats why she push away Jackson. Jackson like Gweny since first meeting, he really like Gweny, years didnt fade out his feeling. They always do some back and foward dance, runner and chasser, finally he try to honor Gweny decision and put some distance.
I love how Jackson still want to be wihnher, after she open up. He determine to protec Gweny. Finally Gweny can breath, she find family who accept her past, who value her.
Thank you to NetGalley for provide this book, it is pleasure to review this book.
Jackson and Gwendolyn are the perfect couple even though at first their relationship is rocky because she's afraid of her past coming to light and she's afraid of him turning his back on her, but she soon realizes that he will do anything and everything for her despite her past. And that they both can face anything and everything together..
The story of the leading couple has its moments were they make some exciting moments entertaining. The book feels like a fast read for me. Perhaps the book is a quick read for historical romance readers. The characters are entertaining for me. I enjoyed reading their interactions with the leading characters. Jackson’s twin brothers are my favorite character. How them two are married I have not a clue. The book has its fun moments. This Isa good read.
For six long years, Jackson Cavendish has loved Miss. Gwendolyn “Gwen” Smith, the woman who stowed away on the ship he and his uncle were on and became a vital part of their research team. But try as he might to win her, Gwen has always kept Jackson at a distance and refuses to drop her shields. Jackson refuses to give up and it seems like his perseverance has paid off when they attend a masked ball and share a night of passion that came straight from his dreams. But the next day, Gwen pretends as if nothing happened and now, months later, Jackson is at his wit's end – can he break through the walls Gwen hides behind or is he wasting his time? He asks his cousins' husbands and is advised to walk away and let her come to him. Jackson is not sure he can do that, but he will try, and where better to do that than at his family home? The home he hasn’t visited since his parents unexpectantly died in a carriage accident. Maybe is it time to walk away and time to face his loss. He tells his uncle that he is going home to work on the book his father was writing, but never finished, and to his surprise, his uncle decides to join him and wants to bring along with his wife, Jackson’s young twin brothers, his youngest daughter, and Gwen. Jackson steels himself to have her in his home, determined to ignore his desire to chase her. At least that is his plan.
Gwen has secrets and has been hiding with the Cavendishes for the past six years, and contrary to what he believes, she has deep feelings for Jackson, but marriage is out of the question because her past would ruin his family. She knows that giving in to the passion that is barely contained between them was a mistake, but she can’t regret it. She will cherish the memory of that night forever. When they return to London, she seeks out an old friend and learns that her past is catching up to her, in a panic, she tells Jackson’s Uncle Henry, the Baron Eaden that she wants to leave his employ and asks for his help in finding a new position. He is surprised, but agrees to help and insists that she come with them to Jackson’s estate Seastorm Manor. She is surprised by Jackson’s behavior and finds herself wanting to tell him why she can never be his wife. But when her secret becomes impossible to keep any longer, she will have to decide if she is willing to trust in the love Jackson claims to have for her and the promise of happily ever after or will she do what she has always done and run away?
This is a new author to me and I didn’t realize that this title is towards the end of the series, so these characters have an established past, and reading the series in order probably would have enhanced my reading experience. But the author did give a bit of backstory, so I didn’t feel completely lost. I loved Jackson, he is such a darling man, so kind, so patient, so willing to understand, and has so much love for a woman who has constantly held him at bay. Gwen was a bit harder for me to like and while I understood her scandal, I didn’t understand her fear of retribution – she was not to blame, so I cannot even comprehend why she was so scared of being found. Once she decided to let go of her fear and trust Jackson, she blossomed – I don’t know, maybe that was the author’s intent all along – but it worked and I finally began to believe she was worthy of the love Jackson had for her. The story has secrets, steamy love scenes, nasty neighbors, emotional healing, a cat, inquiring minds, surprising twists, and finally a very endearing HEA complete with an epilogue. I did enjoy this story, but I was disappointed that the author didn’t seem to know or understand honorific titles, nor did she seem to know how untitled married women were addressed, but to be fair; this is just a pet peeve of mine, and doesn’t really have any bearing on the story. I think this is the fourth book in the series and while I felt that I would have benefited from reading the books in order, I was able to follow the story without a problem.

Will she finally go too far in her denying …
I am not sure I liked Gwendolyn much, I understand her need for a safe haven, to hide from a world that has harmed her, yet she did a disservice to Jackson when despite everything she could not trust him with her secrets. He is more than able to stand by her side whatever her shame when she was only a victim not the culprit of the deceit she suffered. When they were first introduced, watching them throw barbs at one another was fun. Yet as their relationship has taken a turn recently, I found Gwendolyn quite cruel, always in the vicinity but yet out of reach, rejecting Jackson again and again, to finally deciding for them both, never trusting him enough with her secrets. Jackson is so lovable, he has his own failing and flaws, but he knows what or who he wants. For years, he has longed to reach out to Gwendolyn but she has always thwarted his attempts. He might have fallen in love unconditionally, but he seems unable to make her understand how deep his feelings run. She keeps him at arm-length, playing hot and cold with his sentiments, never sharing anything when he would give her the world.
At a time, I would have bashed her head, and shouted good riddance to free Jackson from her. She wallowed too long in self pity, never seeking a way out, she has been ruined, so what, she was not the first nor the last, still she was the one free. Even her rejection of the idea of marriage because her true name would appear is wrong, as I have read not long ago about wedding under a false name on the certificate, it was still valid as long the person was able to marry.
In all Gwendolyn is lucky to have encountered Jackson and his uncle, it is her who gave gossips mongers power over her, she did not trust them to stand for her once they came to know her.
I have had some issues about the appropriate terms to address peers but the author said she will correct it. 4 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
A women with secrets and a mysterious past came into the Cavendish lives six years ago. Gwendolyn Smith is blessed to have found the Cavendish and given a home and job she loves.. She is also cursed that due to her past she has no hope for the future. Jackson working for his uncle as his assistant/ researcher has also worked along side Gwendolyn who has the same type of position. No matter what he tries to gain her favor she doesn’t acknowledge him, except one night at a masquerade ball and an unforgettable night of passion. Which of course she does not admit too. When she receives a unreadable letter her past has found her, but will she run and hide again or find the strength to meet it with the help of Jackson. I can see how women of that time period would have treated the way Gwendolyn was. I didn’t read the previous books in the series, which would have probably help with some of the background of the MC. At times her hiding her secrets seemed to drag and is there really such a patient wonderful man like Jackson? My opinion of course. Thank you NetGalley for this eARC. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story. #NetGalley #LoveaLadyatMidnight
Charlie Lane has become one of my favorite historical romance authors because of her unique ability to write about unusual, complex, unconventional and often flawed characters but that what makes her books so different and wonderful.
Jackson Cavendish has been chasing Gwendolyn Smith for six years. She is the woman for him but she does her best to keep her distance from him because although she cares for him the secrets of her past in her mind are too many too overcome.
When a letter comes threatening to expose her past will she once again run from Jackson or finally trust him with her secrets and the possibility of being together? They had the one night in Paris and she wants more but is she willing to share her secrets and her past?
You will enjoy the emotional ride between Jackson and Gwendolyn as they face the past to secure a future with each other. Gwen has many insecurities, fears, and secrets but Jackson refuses to give up. I absolutely adored Jackson, but there is something about the Cavendish family that makes them hard to resist!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the author and highly recommend it.
Miss Gwendolyn Smith is determined to run away from the life she has established, studying dusty tomes alongside Jackson Cavendish. If she can summon up the courage, it will be to avoid her past, catching up with her. Yet in doing so, she will need to tell Jackson why she cannot be with him. However, Jackson is determined that they will be together, so he reasons that he must force her to choose and that is to face her past so that she can have a future with him.
At times, I wished I had read all the previous books in the series, as I would have gained a sense of some of the characters. However, the author does elaborate, and this certainly help. This book managed to capture all the right elements with a hint of suspense, not knowing how the romance would play out between Gwen and Jackson. There are plenty of great secondary characters, some nice and others quite nasty. A great read overall.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Best one yet! But it will always favor leave a widow wanting more! Jackson and Gwendolyn Aka Gweny! He gave her a few names you will have to read! For 6 long years Jackson chased her and then she would pull away and break his heart a little more until he got tired of it and decided to go home to Seastorm and face the memories of his lost parents and take his brothers with him! Suddenly this turned into a family trip. Jackson is tired of chasing Gwen but is she tired of running! Secrets are revealed and hearts align or do they! Because the past keeps writing letters that keep getting ruined from revealing their true intent! There is no real surprise that Henry is very astute and may no far more of Gwen secrets then she thinks! Just as Gwen wants to take an assignment and run again she may not be able to? What could keep her and the people she loves safe!?? Could it be simply the truth in love? Bravo read on…
A Cat and Mouse Mystery Romance: My first time reading anything by this author. This the fourth book of the series. I was unfamiliar with the series, but I didn't feel lost or that I missed anything. The story is filled with intriguing characters, and this is a story of two people that are extremely attracted to each other but deny their true feelings. One night at a masquerade ball they finally came together and had a passionate interlude but kept themselves unknown to each other even when they actually know who they were. Therefore, the cat and mouse romance. Many rough times for the two but love can conquer all if you're patient enough. A fun story of working together and finding a HEA. A good epilogue I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion. Pretty Cover:
I’ve been reading Charlie Lane’s books for two years now and she never once disappointed me! Her writing is superb, evocative, poetic, the places in which her characters live or move always fit perfectly with the mood of the story and are gorgeously described, the characters are flawed, sometimes infuriatingly so (yes, I’m talking about Gwendolyn!), but very human, and every emotion they feel is eviscerated and laid bare for the readers to see and helps understand them better. Her cinnamon roll heroes are sweet and kind, but also very strong in the face of adversity and so very sexy! And I love a sexy scholar with a sunny disposition and the patience of a saint! This series is really one of my favorite and I’m waiting for the next book (yeah, circus again!) with bathed breath. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Gwendolyn Smith stowed away on a ship with explorer Baron Eadon and his nephew, Jackson Cavendish. For six years they traveled for research and academics. Now they are back in England. Gwendolyn has secrets. Too many people in England remember the scandal. When threatened with exposure, she instinctively wants to run, because revealing her secrets may hurt the ones she loves. Jackson won't give up on convincing her to stay, but knows she may leave him with a broken heart. I felt sorry for Jackson with the will she, won't she leading him on. I wouldn't blame him if he gave up. The ending was really anticlimactic considering Gwendolyn's anxiety. Heat level 3. I recommend reading the extended prequel in the Sunflower Season anthology. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Charlie Lane for access to this delightful and cozy romance arc!!
4.5/5 stars!!
This is my first Charlie Lane book, and it was just so so so sweet! I know now that this is the fourth in a series, but it really didn't take anything away from getting to know these characters. I could absolutely get involved with these two lovebirds and didn't feel like I was missing anything from the secondary characters. It just made me want to read the other books!
I loved Gwendolyn and Jackson together. Going from coworkers to friends to being madly in love - who couldn't love this?? I love love love how sweet and protective Jackson is, and so patient while Gwendolyn works through her past fears and trauma.
If you're looking for a cozy feel good historical romance, then look no further 💕
Jackson and Gwendolyn have worked together for six years assisting his uncle. Over time, they fell in love, but Gwendolyn has resisted Jackson’s every effort to make their relationship permanent. She has secrets from which she runs, and is afraid they will hurt Jackson. This is an entertaining story with a heartwarming romance and an intriguing mystery. The characters are interesting. The Cavendish family is a delight as usual. Jackson and Gwendolyn have been a perfect couple for years, and their future will be happy if they can work through the secrets in her past. Wonderful story, great series. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
Cool cover for an awesome story. I finished this book a few hours ago and what I found was book that had such a dramatic beginning that I as a reader became totally engaged in each word of story. The emotional level was just right in the characters and made them feel very realistic. The characters had flaws and self doubts it made for an awesome book to read. The time I spent with this book just flew by I highly recommend this gem. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Charlie Lane’s newest was just a joy to read. A lady with a secret and a past A man who adores her but can’t get her to see him as a…man Intrigue and Regency. What could be more fun?
I’ll admit I was worried a bit about what exactly Gwen’s horrible secret could be. But when it was revealed, my heart bled for her. Jackson, though, is a man of his word, honorable, and thoroughly in love, so I knew nothing could keep these two apart. Loved the book. Thanks Netgalley for allowing me a sneak peek. 5 stars and can’t wait for the next one!
This was a really good read. I enjoyed it so much I stayed up late to finish it. Wondering what her past will do to her. I loved the ending I never thought of the ending that way. I am sooo glad it steered the direction it did. I was surprised at the veracity that the father showed in keeping her. You'll understand once you read it. I recieved a free copy so that I might tell you what I honestly think. Hope you enjoyed my review. Now go enjoy the book.
Jackson Cavendish had the patience of a saint. Working with his Uncle, and side by side with Gwendolyn for six long years , they researched together, from Paris to England. He loved her and pursued her and she continued to run from him. But not just from him; Gwendolyn ran from her past, always fearful it would catch up with her. He would not run after her forever. She needed to decide if she would risk losing him forever or revealing the secret she guarded with fear.
I haven't read the other's in this series and didn't feel I missed anything so this can be read as a stand alone. I find this author can be a bit hit and miss for me but this book was a resounding hit. A good romance with a bit of mystery happy to recommend this one. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
For many years Jack has been in love with the research assistant his uncle had hired. Gwen was hiding a secret that she was sure would unleash humiliation and scandal on his family if they knew who she really was. Gwen slowly, very slowly, tells some of her secrets and finds she has nothing to be ashamed of after all. I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review.
Books like this deserve more recognition, the author present a story when is supposed that is clear, like "they like each other, they can't be together, they know it, now how am i going to write the 80% towards the end" i was scared but Charlie did it so well that it surprised me, at the end the characters had changed but in a way that gives you a sense of satisfaction about the characters.
A very enjoyable romance, I loved the premise of a lady with a secret running from the gentleman who loves her. Jackson and Gwen are great characters, with a strong connection. The chemistry was there along with the secrets and the story built to a satisfying conclusion.
Quite possibly my favourite ever regency romance! I haven’t stopped since picked it up. Such a beautiful love story filled with passion, courage and love conquering all. Absolutely loved Jaxon and Gwen! Read this book!!
