A deadly threat. A woman in hiding. A man who isn't all he seems.
Olivia James is on the brink of success at a prestigious marketing firm. But when a deadly stalker sets his sights on her, she’s forced to leave everything behind and go into hiding to protect herself and those she loves.
While volunteering her marketing expertise to help a struggling café, she meets William Cooper. Their brewing attraction has her longing to share her secret and deepen their connection. But the closer she gets to Will, the more withdrawn and secretive he becomes.
Uncertain who to trust—even herself—can Olivia discern God’s plan and trust Him in the midst of the storm?
Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Characters: Olivia was a sympathetic character, and she went through so many hard things in this book. Will, although definitely an interesting and essential character, was a little too secretive for me.
Language: Clean.
Plot: Olivia's adaption to small-town living, the stalker threat, and a developing romance kept the plot moving right along. I did struggle a bit when Olivia made a dumb decision near the end, but I guess it made her more realistic since people do dumb things a lot of the time :) Also, the torture scene with the villain was a little much for me. But it can easily be skimmed over if it's something that bothers you.
Romance: Clean. Just kissing.
Themes: This book had a lot of great themes. Trusting God through trials was a big one.
Writing: Latisha Sexton's clear writing style worked great for this book.
Overall: In the Midst of the Storm was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense.
Wow. This book knocked it out of the park 💕 It’s literally like watching a movie. All the details are perfectly placed. It’s fast paced but nothing is left out or forgotten. And the romance (because you can’t have a great story without some romance, right? 😉) is 🫶🏼🫶🏼
I felt like I was right there with Olivia, living out her double life. The friendships she makes are heartwarming and her character is one of my faves. I was routing for her and Will the second they met and was so nervous about his intentions for her - because my girl deserves the best ♥️ I can’t wait for the next book!
If romantic suspense if your jam, pick up this book and read it all in one go. If you’ve never tried romantic suspense, let me introduce you to the perfect book to start out with 😉 heck, if you read, read this book!
*tiny spoiler warning in ratings*
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Faith: strong, beautiful, and deeper than a few trite prayers. Romance: a few kisses and lots of tension/lingering looks. Violence: violent stalker, mention of rape, and one kidnap/torture scene.
I rarely read romantic suspense because it's usually too intense for me, so take this review with a grain of salt since I'm not super familiar with the genre. I'd seen so many great reviews for it, so I gave it a shot.
The story itself is very compelling to the point where I didn't want to stop reading. I did get very frustrated with Olivia as she continued to make extremely stupid decisions even in the midst of running for her life. Obviously, I'm not certain what I would do in that kind of situation, and I did appreciate the acknowledgement eventually that she HAD been stupid, but that didn't mitigate my frustration after the fact.
I did like the characters and I didn't see the twist coming (usually I do, so kudos to Sexton for surprising me). I'm invested enough in the characters that I'll definitely read the second book in the series.
I did appreciate the stront faith component to the story. Most of the characters were Christian, and they were shown living out their faith in their daily lives rather than simply giving a passing mention to prayer and church, which seems to be the trend in "Christian" fiction these days. That alone makes this a worthwhile read, in my opinion.
There is some violence, but considering how incredibly squeamish I am, I think the story can be read by most people. Overall, I recommend this to those who enjoy Christian suspense thrillers with a romance thread and a strong faith component.
Latisha Sexton's debut novel will have you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails. And I'm not even a nail biter!
I got only a few pages in, and was completely hooked! What got her into this position? What danger is she running from? I can feel her pain, her panic, her trepidation.
And then she met Will. Who has a big ol' tattoo! 😍 Well, I'm automatically in love with that guy! But then he started making me REALLY angry, with all his hot and then cold actions. But then when I found out why, it was understandable.
Olivia was conscience-stricken over lying about her identity, which got me to thinking something I've never before wondered about: is it wrong to lie about your identity if you're in the witness protection program? What are your thoughts on that?
And Latisha? I'm afraid I'm gonna need a full novel on Will's grandparents. So go ahead and get crackin' on that!
I was glad that there weren't more details on the injuries sustained later in the book. I think it was a good balance there.
This was a GREAT first novel by Latisha, and I'm excited to see what she comes out with next! ~cough~ Will's grandparents ~cough~
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.*
What an amazing debut novel! Christian romantic suspense is my absolute favorite genre, and this book is right at the top of my all time favorites. It sucked me in from the beginning and kept me fully invested until the very end with a plot full of intrigue and mystery. The character development was well done, showing us characters who were broken and hurting. I really appreciated the strong faith thread woven throughout the story. The bond between Olivia and her brother Mac was so sweet. The author did a great job of including a few strong side characters, which I also liked.
I loved this book and highly recommend it, as well as her novella (Shaniece's story) which is free when you sign up for the author's newsletter. Also, watch for the next book in this series.
***I was given an early copy of this book by the author. All opinions expressed are my own.***
Wow! It’s hard to believe this is Latisha Sexton’s debut novel! You know a book is going to be good when it grabs hold of you from the very first and is so hard to put down. It’s a hidden identity, on the run, suspense-filled romance Christian suspense fans will love.
Olivia is running from a dangerous, violent stalker. Her FBI agent brother Mac has provided her with a new identity, and a safe house in Stonecrest, Colorado while he goes after her tormentor. Needing to stay busy, she volunteers her marketing skills to help out a local cafe. She meets a handsome photographer named Will Cooper who’s mysterious, definitely swoony, and everything Olivia’s desired in a man. But, Will is keeping secrets and becomes more evasive the closer they get. Can she trust him with not only her heart but her life?
I loved the way the author set up this book. I was honestly constantly questioning everything. It’s hard to know who Olivia can trust. Olivia’s and Will’s instant attraction provided some great romantic tension especially when it’s unclear what Will’s motives are. I enjoyed Will’s family especially his sister Lily. She has her own troubled past and I can’t wait to read her story. I also loved Shaniece. Everyone needs a friend like her!
Olivia’s journey is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. She’s gone through some traumatic experiences and carries a lot of guilt about hiding her identity from those she cares about. She also has the need to reconnect with her faith. Her feelings are raw and real and the author does a fantastic job expressing Olivia’s struggles. In the most trying of circumstances, her spiritual preparation and faith give her the strength to endure the unimaginable.
This book definitely kept me on pins and needles the whole time. The stalker is really creepy and I was just waiting for him to strike. With plenty of twists and turns, a slow burn sizzling but clean romance, and inspirational spiritual messages woven throughout, this is one debut novel you’ll definitely want to put on your TBR list. I can’t wait to read her next book! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
Content: mention of rape, kidnapping, brief violence
It wasn't as scary as I'd thought it would be...until it was!😱
Suspense is not a genre I've read much of, but I started this year with the intention of reading more of it. So when this debut novel released I snatched it up and devoured it in 4 nights.
This is an easy and fairly quick read that had me guessing around every corner. The story starts out with Olivia James having to quit her job, move away from all she knows, and assume a fake identity to protect herself from a stalker. Now I'm not sure if I missed something the first night I read (reading while tired), but there for quite a while I couldn't determine whether the handsome, faith-talking, helpful, kind Will Cooper might be the stalker. That definitely added to the suspense for me...whether that was intentioned by the author, or my own fault for missing a detail I'm not sure.🤭
I enjoyed the growing relationship between Olivia and Will...even though I was hesitant at times not knowing whether Will could be trusted. The side characters were absolutely lovable, the setting homey, and the faith content was AMAZING! I have so much quotes saved. Can't beat a suspense novel filled with beautiful, practical Christian content!
Now I will say, it wasn't as suspenseful as I'd gone in expecting. I'll admit I was scared about trying the book for that rreason. But it was really just a delightful read with a slight creep factor for most of the book...until that last about 25%. Then my heart was pumping, I was holding my breath, and completely forgetting to swallow. All it took was one wrong decision on Olivia's part and there the scary plays in. The torture was a little more detailed than my sensitive self could quite handle, but I made it through and suffered no nightmares from it, and, thankfully, there is a happy ending that left me satisfied.
And with that preview of the first chapter of the second book in the series...well, I like need it NOW.😂 I'll definitely be reading future releases by this author.
This was a great read, especially if you like suspense. It's not my favorite genre, but I had no trouble connecting with the characters in this one.
There was one moment in particular that made me swoon SO HARD! 😍
The twist towards the end threw me for a complete loop that I was still reeling from for days after!
There was some violence that I had to skip over because sensitive heart couldn't take it. Just be aware if you're not into that, but it isn't until the end. The villain is just realllllllly evil.
If you enjoy...

What an exciting debut novel! In this page-turner, Latisha Sexton weaves a tale of a young woman choosing to trust God in the midst of terrifying circumstances. While the book is labeled “suspense,” the whole book isn’t scary. There are many lighthearted moments as Olivia gets to know the folks in her new small town hideout. There are swoony moments as she and Will develop feelings for each other. And yes, there is some edge-of-your-seat tension as Olivia battles the dark forces against her. I appreciated her steadfast faith throughout each twist and turn of her journey. And I’m really excited to read Lily’s story next!
In the Midst of the Storm is a Christian suspense filled with romance, action, and plenty of faith.
Plot The plot was quite interesting and kept me wondering until the climax.
Characters Olivia has been through so much, but I admired her courage and tenacity. Plus, she's tall! Which is a huge bonus because tall FMCs are rare. I also liked her character arc and how she grew in her faith throughout the book. Also, I liked how she wasn't worthless and helpless when problems arose. She could think for herself and not allow the circumstances to reduce her to a screaming, worthless mess like how we see most heroines portrayed.
Will was good too. We didn't experience the events through his POV as often, but Sexton portrayed him so well through Olivia's perspective that that's not an issue.
The Creep: a.k.a. Stalker Man and He-Who-Needed-To-Be-Shot-With-An-Arrow is a menace. Honestly, I would have liked to have Will shoot this nasty piece of work because a lot of emphasis was put on Will's Ute heritage and how good he was with a bow and arrow. But The Cretin's ending suffices. And good riddance. Nasty soul.
Faith I really, really liked the faith Sexton incorporated. It's strong, real, and natural to the plot. The faith element is definitely one of the book's strongest points.
Violence/Content Warning Rape and torture are mentioned; the villain is truly sadistic; a torture scene may frighten sensitive readers; a character is smashed upside the noggin.
What I Wasn't Fond Of There was one thing I wasn't quite sold on, and that's the mention of zombies, vampires, The Walking Dead, and Twilight.
One of the childhood anecdotes regarding vampires was hilarious, and that wouldn't have bothered me if that was the only time. But there were about five-to-six mentions of these, and I just wasn't fond of that. I do not believe Christians should have anything to do with such elements of the dark supernatural. Plus, from what I hear, Twilight is just a mess of problems in and of itself.
That won't bother all readers, though, so do not let this dissuade you from reading this book.
Conclusion In the Midst of the Storm is a solid Christian suspense novel with a beautiful amount of faith and a heart-pounding amount of action. It sets it up well for Book Two, and I already ship those characters. I liked this book, and I'm not a suspense reader, so those who are into this genre will certainly enjoy In the Midst of the Storm.
*I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed herein are my own.
If you like a lot of romance in your romantic suspense…( I definitely do) this is a book for you. This genre isn’t a favorite of mine but this one is so well done and I loved the developing romance between Olivia and Will. The faith themes are present from the first few pages which was another thing I loved. Olivia can’t do anything about the past but she still trusts God with her future. And that’s a hard thing to do when you’re forced to surrender your identity. This cozy little town becomes home not just for Olivia, but for readers too as we get to know these characters. Now I’m excited to read the next book in this series.
I received an early copy and was asked to write an honest review. All opinions are my own.
**I was given an early copy of the book by the author. A review was not required and all opinions expressed are my own.
This book set the bar really high for what I now expect from Christian romantic suspense!
I didn’t even know this genre existed but I grew up on reading suspense/mystery novels (not very clean, certainly not Christian…) but now that I’ve discovered this, I’m a new fan and look forward to reading more from this author, as well as more books in this genre!
This book will keep you guessing. When I say I was on the edge of my couch, I was on the edge, going back and forth on who I thought was the bad guy and had no clue how this story was going to unfold.
Solid story, great cast of characters, really well written plot, especially for a debut! It’s kinda hard to believe this is a debut.
The faith element and the honest way it was portrayed in the story was one of the best parts! Following Olivia’s journey totally made me question how I would handle being in her situation, as a believer no less!
I can’t wait to see what’s in store for some other characters in the next one!
I like fluffy, Christian fiction reads sometimes. I really do. But I also love something I can really chew on, something a bit grittier that makes me think. And phew, this book delivered! The ending had me completely glued to my Kindle - you’ll see why when you read it. Which you totally should.
(I will say some sensitive readers may find this book disturbing in parts. I read a lot of mystery, crime, and thrillers and am not particularly sensitive, and even I got freaked out, lol! But it’s balanced with such a deep faith message and never goes too over the top, imo.)
Latisha nails the chilling & creepy nature of stalking with very real emotions. I love the small town community and the natural way faith is woven into the everyday lives of the characters. Will & Olivia are cute. And Mac is my favourite. 🤭 There’s something about older brother relationships that always gets me in the feels (so glad we get his story next!!).
I was honored to read a very early copy of this book and it sucked me in from page one and didn't let me go until the very end. This is a debut author you need to keep your eyes on because I see many more fantastic books from her. This book deals with hard topics, but it always points back to Christ and a firm foundation in Him. The characters are broken, but by the end they are glued back together. Not with a pretty bow, but with a faith that will sustain them past the pages we read. It keeps you on the edge of your toes and then some. You never know what will happen next. I kept trying to figure out where the story was headed and I was never quite sure. I read this almost in one sitting because I HAD to know what happened next. Can't wait for book two in this series.
Let me start my review by saying Romantic Suspense isn't really my genre, but that it might become my genre after having read this book! I can't wait to see what comes next for Latisha Sexton - she's earned her spot on my TBR book list.
Perhaps my favorite thing about this book is the way the author made you fall in love with a character you knew (or at least you thought you knew!) you shouldn't. It kept me on the edge of my seat as I waited for the main character to figure out his secret. And then, plot twist! His secret is completely different than what I thought it was.
A great debut novel and one worth adding to your 2023 reading list!
I have high expectations when it comes to christian contemporary fictions. Usually, my go to authors for that specific genre are Francine Rivers and Joanna Alonzo. But this book is wow! I have enjoyed every chapter and every character, and how the story progresses. Though I am looking for more action in this book. Hopefully other characters will get their spotlight also. 😍 As much as I want to say more, I better stop here. I might give away spoilers. 😅 You have to read this!
Got an eARC from the author but the opinions above are my honest review. 😊
"In the Midst of the Storm" had me on the edge of my seat. With a cast of strong characters and the never ending question of who to trust, I couldn't put this book down until I had devoured it. Now I want to read it again!
I absolutely loved sinking into this book and picturing myself in the small town where it’s set. I want the characters to be my friends! The main character Olivia is relatable and her journey in this story is significant. I love the way she grows as the story unfolds. And her love interest, Will, is downright swoony! The story is a wonderful mix of wholesome and gritty. I was on the edge of my seat at some parts. The villain is excellently portrayed and really creepy. I’m so glad I read this book! I received an advance copy of this book but was not required to leave a positive review. I genuinely loved it and can’t wait to see what the author writes next.
This story will keep you on your toes! With every chapter you want to know and understand more - when the mud clears, it's like HOLY SMOKES WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!
I honestly believe that books can give you a glimpse into an authors heart and character. This is the first book I've read where characters actively pray about anything and everything in an organic way that I admire. Latisha is a wonderful woman of faith, and her desire to encourage others to trust God amidst the storm is laced beautifully within the pages.
I had the honor of listening to the audio book form, and honestly, the only thing I had to get used to was hearing a woman trying to do a man's voice. Aside from that, it was an enjoyable experience, and you should totally consider reading or listening to this wonderful story.
Latisha packs a punch in this Christian Romantic Suspense. It's full of false identities, lies, secrets, and twists you won't see coming. The romance is top notch and realistic, especially in light of the circumstances. Olivia clings tightly to God in the midst of her trials, unwavering in her faith and trusting in God's sovereignty even when life feels like it's spinning out of control. If you like you like your heroes swoon-worthy, romances realistic, and suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat, you need to read In the Midst of the Storm
It was such an honor to read an arc copy of Latisha Sexton’s debut novel! I will start off by saying that this was a real page turner that took a lot of self-control to put down!
Most of the book feels pretty light with suspenseful moments sprinkled through. My favorite scene was the hike at Chaucauqua. I laughed out loud multiple times. I will warn you that the end is INTENSE! Well, for me at least, but I’m a scaredy cat. 😆
Genre: Christian Suspense
There are very strong Christian themes throughout the book. I’ll be honest that Christian elements in fiction sometimes make me cringe, but I felt those parts were well done and that the author was genuine in her faith. As a Christian myself, I could relate to Olivia’s inner monologue. I can see how it could be hard for some readers to relate, but I think they would still enjoy the main storyline.
Steam Level: Low (kissing only)
Trigger warnings: Rape, murder, stalker
I personally had to skim through chapter 28 as it described childhood events that led to the male antagonist’s dysfunction. I have three little boys and found it triggering. It is a suspense novel though, so intense themes are to be expected.
Overall, I think the author knocked her debut out of the park! I need Mac’s story soon! Right after I read a fluffy rom com so I can sleep tonight. 😆
A deeply moving tale of danger, romance, love, pain, betrayal, faith, and doubt, this story swept me into the small Denver town and never let me go. Olivia James is a woman on the run - but she's no helpless damsel, that's for sure. She meets the mysterious Will Cooper, who has shocking secrets of his own, and together, well, they're a pretty cute couple. I really enjoyed Olivia's demonstration of faith during her difficult time as well as the dynamic between her and Will, as well as the numerous side characters. Thank you to the author for my ARC; all opinions are mine.
It’s always exciting to find a new romantic suspense author to add to my ‘must read’ list, so please pardon me some bookish happy dancing at my discovery of Latisha Sexton’s books! In the Midst of the Storm may be Sexton’s debut novel, but I had to look that up to verify it. The suspense, the characters, the writing voice – all of it feels like it was written by an author with several published novels to her name.
I was immediately engrossed in this story, and especially in the characters. Olivia (aka Katie) is layered and compelling; her normally adventurous personality hampered by the need to blend in, to stay under the radar, lest her stalker get a hint as to her whereabouts. She made some decisions that had me wanting to shake her, but overall I really liked her. I also looked over my shoulder right along with her and wasn’t sure if Will could be trusted. Oh, I desperately wanted him to be, because he’s pretty swoony and seemed like the perfect guy for her. And gosh, I loved him. But there was this whole tension that he gave off, along with some accompanying mood shifts, that had me – and Olivia – hesitant to fully trust him until such a point as I might have all the necessary info. This push-pull was expertly done, and the author’s clever story choices kept me guessing all the way to the culmination of the suspense thread. And whew!! What a ride that was!! I’m pretty sure I didn’t breathe for a good three or four chapters lol. Good thing I read fast lol
Bottom Line: In the Midst of the Storm by Latisha Sexton is a stellar debut novel, full of multi-dimensional characters (with more layers I suspect are still to be revealed from this book’s supporting cast!) and a compelling plot. The suspense thread is tightly-written and will send your heart into your throat more than once. The romance is sweet & swoony, and there’s a doozy of a first kiss that had me reaching for my fan! And woven through it all is a gentle but meaningful faith thread with characters who are clearly Christians (without apology) but still struggle, just like we all do. A great read from start to finish!
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I read via Kindle Unlimited.)
This book has great characters and a solid plot that keeps you turning the pages to see how things will unfold. A fabulous debut novel, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Suspense fans, don't miss out on this one! We meet Olivia just as she's heading out of state to hide from a stalker. Her brother gets her to a safe place in a small little town. Safe is subjective, right? I just loved how the townsfolk get to know her (as much as they can) and pull her into the fold.
Insert creepy plot twist that will have you on the edge of your seat and yelling at Olivia!
Then there's William, who seems sweet and according to Olivia is very attractive. Unfortunately, he comes with some secrets that gives us all pause. Let me just say, the author gave me plenty of room for mind games throughout the entire story thanks to him.
There are so many twists and turns, but two major ones that will have your jaw dropping!
You could feel the faith of the people in the church, but again, a reminder that sometimes those who are singing and worshipping with you... how well do you really know them? How well do you really know anyone? hahahaha
I'm hoping there will be a follow up story with Olivia's brother! That or William's sister. She's got plenty of a hidden past for us to learn about to be a book all in itself! Here's to hoping for more!
I highly recommend this debut novel for anyone who loves thrillers and suspense. The storyline keeps you on the edge of your virtual seat as you follow Olivia to the mountains of Colorado.
The sweet and gentle romance between Olivia and William had me torn, as I had my doubts about William.
This is a book that you should read and I will read again. Latisha has a writing style similar to Dee Henderson, Irene Hannon, Terri Blackstock, and. Dani Pettrey. She is now in my list of favorite authors to read.
TW: Torture, stalking, Animal abuse off page but talked about
I stayed up until 1 AM to finish this. I needed to know how it ended. Technically I started it Friday, but I didn’t really sit down to read it until yesterday. If I didn’t have responsibilities, I would have probably finished this in one sitting.
It’s been a while since I could have read a book in one sitting. I ate this book up! I didn’t know who the stalker was. I had a feeling towards one guy because the author makes it seem that way. (Amazing how she did that by the way.) I didn’t want to root for Will, because I didn’t trust him. But then I started rooting for Will. Then I started questioning myself.
I can’t immediately jump into the next book, but oh boy am I going to add it to the TBR. (Blasted already scheduled reading.) I do plan on reading it this month though. I can’t wait to find out about Lily. I also have a feeling Malcom is going to be her love interest.
☂ This book has so much going on and I love it! Immediately you are introduced into the middle of this scene and there are so many questions. You have so many things that you are working through and mysteries you are trying to figure out.
☂It is a great book. I loved all of the things I listed above. I really felt like I was in the middle of the story and not just reading it.
☂I was shocked with all of the twists and turns and I loved it. ❤️
*I received a free eARC of this book. All thoughts, views, and opinions are my own. :)
