This is a story about a cabin in a small town, a workaholic New Yorker who hates the holidays, and a hot nerd local doctor who loves Christmas...and flirxting. It starts to snow. There is also a dog.
It’s a short, sweet, hilarious and steamy Christmas story to enjoy with your eggnog. Just kidding. Nobody enjoys eggnog. Enjoy this with something chocolate-y.
*Please note: a shorter version of this story was included in the USA Today bestselling anthology SMARTASSES. This edition has over 2500 more words than the anthology version.
Amazon Top 25 and USA Today bestselling author Kayley Loring spent many years as a screenwriter (under a different name) in Los Angeles before moving to the Pacific Northwest to live out her childhood dream of being a Disney heroine who talks and sings to woodland creatures. When not trying to keep animals alive, she’s writing steamy romantic comedy novels, obviously. She’s breathing cleaner air, writing dirtier words, and staring at her computer screen until her eyeballs dry out instead of prancing around Southern California in miniskirts and going to the hair salon. Still waiting for the woodland creatures to clean her house, though.
Read or listen to Kayley’s books when you want humor, heat, and heart. You’ll enjoy top-notch banter, strong heroines, lovable characters you’d want to know in real life and you’ll swoon over perfectly imperfect book boyfriends. All Kayley Loring books are steamy open door romance. Be sure to check out her next-level audiobooks!
"Merry Christmas to me, and to me, a good night." This was my first holiday story this year. I always pick a few to get a taste of the Christmas spirit, and this is the perfect quick, funny, and steamy read for that.
"There’s just something about his expression in the profile photo. Something in his eyes quietly calls out to me. It’s subtle, but it’s familiar, and it breaks my heart a little and softens it at the same time." Jillian's the workaholic, or at least she'll try to sell you on that. Work's her escape, so it's all she has to focus on. When she's stuck on her own for Christmas, she gets a tip from a friend, and rents a cabin in the Catskills. Mitchell is the owner of said cabin, and she makes assumptions about him that are oh, so very wrong, but hilarious anyway. Him? Well, he's sort of a nerd, he's lacking a bit in the sexting department, but in person? He totally makes up for all of it.
"I deleted that and started to type out: Something’s come up. Something big. Go to the bedroom, lie down on the bed like a good girl, and wait for me to bring it to you." Let's say the Internet connection she needs to work is not very stable, and that he comes in to help fix her hardware. Pun intended. And then there's a connection that goes way beyond her wi-fi, some not-so-successful innuendoes and... a list of sexual positions.
"I rise up on my tiptoes. He tilts his head down. And just like that, he is kissing me as if he’s been longing for me for an eternity." Some of their moments are awkward, but adorably so. I was smiling for most of it, and that's just what I needed. And, you know, this is Kayley Loring, so I’m going to be getting the feels because I’m weird like that. It's insta-lovey, insta-lusty, the snow and the atmosphere around them help make this a quick, sweet read...
"“You’re only this wet for me?” “Yes.” “You’re not just saying that?” “Do I seem like the kind of woman who gives porny compliments?” “You seem like the kind of woman who’s about to get some porny lip service.” ... and then the banter and this thing between them will fog up your windows without even needing a fireplace, and you're gonna be left needing to read more about them. Well, I was, anyway.
"Still hate Christmas?” I ask. “Not right now. I kind of love it right now, actually." I've always been a huge Christmas fan, but then stuff happened, and these days I need to be reminded that there really is a certain magic to it. That maybe anything can happen. Kayley brought all the sweet and sexy magic with this book, and my heart is full.
I don't want to offend anyone who has read and loved this book, but damn, was it bad! I so rarely give out 1 star ratings, and yet this book deserves nothing more 🙈
Please don't be fooled by the cute title and cover as I was!! Yes, there is a dog, and I don't know if the author has ever had one, but it sure doesn't seem that way judging by what she has written about Agnes, the French bulldog.
The chemistry between the characters was weird and not believable, the pillow talk and sex scenes are pure cringe, the jokes (especially the sexual inuendos) are so bad I squeezed my eyes shut several times or just felt... idk, embarrassed? And the whole story itself is just silly in my opinion.
The plot: Jillian is a paralegal who because of unforseen circumstances has to spend Christmas alone at a cabin in the Catskills, working. Said cabin is beautifully decorated and cozy and the whole place is filled with dog pictures. The landlord is an (OBVIOUSLY) extremely hot ophthalmologist, who Jillian instantly assumes is gay, because a straight guy cannot have good taste and an eye for decorating. They start flirting via texts, while talking about the wifi not working properly in the cabin, and shortly after they both realize they have to bone ASAP. Which they do. A lot. For way too many pages... Which I skipped... 🙃 After phrases like "Santa's got a package for you. Do you want it? Yes, I want it. You sure want it? Yes, I want it." I just gave up and skipped to the end.
The author tried to then finish on a cute note by writing the epilogue from the dog's POV, but even that was cheesy and bad. I am sorry, Kayley Loring 🙈
A freebie short story offered by the author at the end of “A Very Bossy Christmas.”
If you’re not holiday’d out, here’s a cute, cheerful story. Jillian and Mitchell infuse insta-lust into a Hallmark style Christmas. There’s peppermint bark cookies, fine stationary and an adorable pup named Agnes.
If you are looking for a love story, this isn't a book for you. It's a really short story, more like just a scene... What makes this book so special to me, though, is the writing style. The humor and wit... the absurd thought processes that make it playful and so close to me. No word in the story is "wasted", no empty descriptions. Dialogues that I enjoyed reading incredibly. It was fun and exactly the distraction, I was looking for.
This is the fifth romance that I've read by Kayley Loring. I read A Very Bossy Christmas last year and it remains my favorite of her books (Maddie and Declan are even mentioned in this book!) I think since it's been a few months since I've read one of Loring's books, I had to get readjusted to her writing style. If you want yearning and prolonged sexual tension, then this is not the book for you. I'd forgotten how insta-lusty her books are, MCs are already having thoughts of sex-ing as they're being introduced to each other. Which is fine (sometimes) but in a 60-page novella it's a little much. Jillian and Mitchell had sizzling chemistry, but everything happens so quickly. They go from sexting to sleeping together to falling in love in like 30 seconds flat.
Oh, and y'all weren't exaggerating about the epilogue. It's from the POV of Mitchell's dog and it's ridiculous and not in a fun way. Naturally Agnes the dog has a French accent because she's a French bulldog *everybody groans*
Well. This was very quick, so it had that going for it. Uhhh. If you enjoy cringey first-person POV, terrible euphemisms, a protagonist who is very hooked on the question of the love interest being "straight or gay" (bisexuality, pansexuality, and a slew of others wave hello) because of certain stereotypical conceptions, and also an epilogue from the French bulldog's POV which is for some reason in a horrific French accent, you'll like this. I did not.
Totally not what I expected -- zip story line but an abundance of pointless ridiculousness and excessive sexual innuendos. I didn't care for either Jillian or Mitchell or their immaturity -- but Agnes gets 2 stars! The rest is one big BAH HUMBUG!
Absolutely HILARIOUS and QUIRKY! This book made me laugh out loud at the funny moments in this Christmas rom-com novella! THERE IS ALSO A DOG is a 70 page novella about a cabin in a small town, a visiting workaholic New Yorker who hates the holidays, and a hot-nerd doctor who loves Christmas and sex! Plus there’s also a French bulldog named Agnes! A great comedy novel you should read this holiday season!
I don’t even know what I just (mostly) read. I had to give up on a 62 page short story at about the 80% mark. And I am tenacious about finishing books once I’m at least 30% through it.
What started out as promising (cute concept, pretty strong start to story) turned into this extremely awkward and confusing situation once the 2 main characters actually meet.
He is a nerd. Fine. I really like nerdy characters in general. But this character’s dorkiness is written in the most cringy way. And it was like whiplash because within one short paragraph his thoughts are over the top sweetness and nerdiness (like really over the top) and then devolves instantly into really crude sexual thoughts. And I guess this is supposed to be fine because he’s really good looking but it honestly made me feel awkward and a bit gross and especially since it’s in first person POV.
And the romance part was so rushed (I’m not sure extending the number of pages would have helped), that it felt forced and a bit manic. The only relationship building between the guy coming to fix the router to them ending up in bed is a few really, really awkward and cringy innuendos and jokes. I had second hand embarrassment reading these lines (again, probably because of the 1st person POV).
And a final comment, the whole thing at the beginning about he must be gay because of how nice the place looked and how attentive to detail he was with his air bnb…maybe one joke would be fine but it kept going. And going. Until their mutual friend has to convince her that, no, he is in fact not gay. That joke was overdone about 20 years ago.
I grabbed this from KU as a recommendation and I liked the dog part and because it was so short. I read the opener referencing the tweet that was the inspiration to this short story, about the plot of all Hallmark Christmas movies. So maybe, I’ve completely missed the joke and this was 100% pure satire. Honestly, I hope that’s that case.
PS - I see most of the author’s other books feature the bare-chested hunks. Nothing against those books at all, but if this cover had been one of those it would’ve been a better fit and at least I wouldn’t have been so surprised at what I was reading. These new cute cartoon drawn covers are misleading in a lot of cases.
'Su risa es alegría mezclada con tristeza, como el tintineo de las campanas de un trineo, y me hace desear ser más gracioso para poder escuchar esa risa de campanas todo el tiempo.'

Argumento:
🎀Esta es la historia de una cabaña en un pequeño pueblo, una neoyorquina adicta al trabajo que odia las vacaciones y un doctor local nerd caliente que ama la Navidad... y coquetear. Empieza a nevar.
Simplemente me encantó. Al final me hizo querer a Agnes tanto que se la quería robar a Mitchell!
Oh dear. That was my first thought when I finished this book. I wish there was a half star because 1 1/2 is more accurate when it comes to the rating I’d give this. The half star is only because the epilogue is written by the dog, which is kind of cute.
I like a steamy read but this one was too porn-ish. It wasn’t the sex scenes as much as it was that they literally met when Mitchell came over to fix the internet and were having sex about 10 minutes later. That’s the plot of a low budget porn! (Don’t ask how I know that. 🤣)
I like a little romance before they jump into bed. I realize this a novella but a bit more time getting to know each other would have only added a couple more pages…
this was clearly a waste of my time. as soon as this man faked an italian accent and said “are you lost baby girl?” I gagged. in fact I lost my appetite and I really wanted to eat cheeseburgers because haven’t eaten one in ages. I WANTED MY DAMN CHEESEBURGER. they literally meet through text because she rented a cabin from him and they meet for the first time and they have sex. WHAT? don’t read this it’s a waste of time. can’t believe I could’ve been reading a good book but I was ready this THING. 😵💫
This little short was fun and easy to listen to. I loved the narration both narrators do a great job.
I mean because it was so short I knew going in it was going to be quick to the "steamy stuff" so I wasn't surprised at all that they pretty much meet and jump right to it.
I found it so endearing that it was the dog that got the instant-love but it makes sense who can resist?
So short, easy to read but didn't really engage overall. Writing a meaningful novella in 62 pages takes a lot of work and this just didn't strike the feels overall.
THERE IS ALSO A DOG is a super steamy, super quick read. The title is...ummm...not great. What can you do.
This book has LOADS of snort-laughs! So many funny moments and Kayley Loring always makes me laugh out loud.
I really loved both main characters. is all business, sarcasm, and a bit neurotic. This is a perfect counter to the kind nerdy, slightly awkward, but seriously hot
I'm one of those romance readers for whom steamy scenes are only as good as the chemistry, interactions, and build up preceding them. I really wish this book has been a bit longer so we could get more relationship to go with the epic steam.
If you are here for all the steam then you will probably love THERE IS ALSO A DOG. There isn't an issue with this novella, just with my personal reading preferences for more connection before sex.
𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗟𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟: Rated R / 1-4 descriptive sex scenes, may have harsh language. 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗦: none 𝗙𝗘𝗘𝗟𝗦: 1/5 - Light and funny Rom-Com with little to no drama.
Omfg I love this the fact that it’s based on every hallmark movie to exist was 👨🍳💋 These characters were so fucking funny I can’t he was the nerdy man who has a dirty mouth n she’s a big city gal who has a sex position list like what more could u want and the best part is the star of the show who is Agnes the dog n she does get her own chapter at the end I do wish it was a bit more steamy but that’s rly it
Jillian is a workaholic, Christmas-hating paralegal from NYC whose apartment just had a sewer backup incident. Obviously, there is no way to stay in Manhattan during the holiday season, but her friend Maddie (yup, that Maddie from A Very Bossy Christmas!! ) comes to rescue and tells her that her friend Mitchell has a cabin in Catskills that just became vacant. Jillian heads there expecting a homey place with good wi-fi (she has to work, dammit!), not knowing that she will find the swooniest, sexiest pediatric ophthalmologist waiting for her... and there is also a dog! Previously released as a short story in the Smartasses anthology, this longer novella is the perfect kickstart for the holiday season! All I want for Christmas is Mitchell... and his dog! It's steamy, it's Christmas-y, it's swoony and if you don't finish this story pining for a blue French bulldog we can't be friends! The epilogue written in Agnes's POV is to die for! The audiobook, narrated duet style by Erin Mallon and Connor Crais will be out by the end of the month and I can't even! LOVED IT!
A super cute and not lacking any steam for a novella. I love the reverse grumpy/sunshine aspect of the book. Mitchell is sunshine nerdy guy who knows exactly what he’s going. Jillian is a grumpy woman who hates Christmas (just like me). And I’m so glad there’s a dog, especially a cute Frenchie. I loved the epilogue.
I liked the concept of the book, but like nothing really happened. Also the epilogue and it coming from the dogs points of view with a british accent and not being able to read half of it was kind of pointless to be honest. some parts were cute, but it was really cut to the chance with the sexy time. I just felt like it was super awkward.
Received this as surprise book mail and devoured it immediately! Thank you so much Candice. 🥰 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲: 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘈𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘢 𝘋𝘰𝘨 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿: 𝘒𝘢𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘺 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 🌺🌺🌺🌺 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁: This is a story about a cabin in a small town, a workaholic New Yorker who hates the holidays, and a hot-nerd local doctor who loves Christmas...and flirxting. It starts to snow. There is also a dog. 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: This was a really quick and easy read. It was pretty cute and I definitely want to check out more books by this author. I wouldn’t necessarily call it steamy per say as it really only has one smut scene and it’s pretty tame. Mitchell sounds extremely attractive and straight up adorable - I’d like to read more about him. If you’re looking for a short Christmas novella, start here. I absolutely loved how the author came up with the title! The epilogue was actually hilarious and totally worth the read. 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗲: “Merry Christmas to me, and to me a goodnight!”
If you are looking for a book with no emotional connection between the two main characters and they makes dirty euphemism off any classic holiday sayings, this book is for you. Oh, and there’s a dog also.
