Hunted by Them

Rate this book
One thing I knew for certain:
Once upon a time rarely ended in happily ever after. Chosen. Betrayed. The Alpha and High Council would never stop hunting me.
Not if they wanted to keep their secrets. My family offered me up like a lamb to the slaughter,
masking the brutality with the honor of being Chosen.
They lied. I’d stepped off that cliff, surrendering my fate to the river below. That’s how they found me.
Bleeding and nearly drowned.

Hunter and Wolf.
The Alpha's of the Carnage Wolves MC They said I was special.
An Omega with the blood of an Alpha.
And their mate.

They’d claim me,
Body and soul.
Whether I liked it or not.

Hunted by Them by Jo McCall is a dark paranormal shifter RH romance loosely inspired by Red Riding Hood. It follows Freya, an outcast wolf who escapes her brutal pack, only to be rescued—bloodied and broken—by the Alphas of the Carnage Wolves MC. But in the twisted wilderness of this world, salvation is never simple. Especially when both Alphas seem to be her fated mates…

───♡─────────────

♡ What I liked most:
• The plot was genuinely engaging—I kept saying “just one more chapter” until it was suddenly 2 AM 🐺
• The worldbuilding had depth and grit, with little history crumbs that made it feel lived in
• The pacing was excellent—I never felt like the story dragged

✘ What didn’t work for me:
• There were some grammar and typo hiccups—not major, but enough to tug me out of the story at times
• A few plot inconsistencies left me a little confused or second-guessing events
• One scene involving Wolf’s behavior made me uncomfortable—it crossed a line from dominant to aggressive, and not in a romanticized way 🚫
• The spicy scenes lacked build-up—they felt rushed rather than smoldering
• The use of terms like “slut” and “whore” by the MMCs felt jarring and unnecessary, especially considering Freya’s trauma—it made me wince more than once 😬

❀ Overall:
This series lured me in with the promise of fairytales gone dark and delicious—but so far, they feel more like fantasy romances with a fairytale shimmer sprinkled on top. Not a bad thing! Just… not quite what I hoped.
Still, Hunted by Them had some compelling elements—tense dynamics, gritty lore, and a plot that pulled me in. I’m curious enough to keep going, but I’ve adjusted my expectations from full fairytale immersion to something a little more loosely inspired. A fun, chaotic read with teeth—but I wish it had just a bit more heart.

4.75 - 5 smutty stars!

Hunted By Them was brilliantly executed and kept me glued to its pages. Based loosely off Little Red Riding Hood, Hunted By Them was a steamy, action packed, dark and twisty RH and MC romance. Mind the triggers because this does have some darker elements to it.

Freya is a wolf shifter and discovers her pack and its way of life is not what she thought. Escaping that nightmare and left broken and bleeding, Wolf and Hunter discover the beauty washed up. They all have secrets but it isn't long before Wolf and Hunter discover she is their fated mate and with some hot persuasion from Hunter, Freya realizes it too.

"No one had ever looked at me that way before. Mate. My wolf said it again, but this time it stuck. Hunter was my mate. My fated mate, and that meant safety and security. It meant I was home."

When secrets start getting revealed, it will threaten everything Freya, Wolf, and Hunter always knew. Will they beat the odds and come out alive and thriving?

I don't want to give too much away because the story was incredibly unique and refreshing and the twist at the end...TOTALLY SURPRISED ME. I love when a book can do that because not many do these days. I loved Freya. She's an Omega but also an Alpha and those two parts of her were balanced perfectly. Her wit and sassiness had me laughing and her tenacity and boldness had me cheering. Despite being a strong female, she melted at the right moments for her mates and it was sweet in a kinky and delicious way haha.

"Hunter’s kiss had been about obsession and devotion. Wolf’s kiss was possession and promise."

Wolf and Hunter were the perfect pair for Freya (no MM) and were two halves of a whole. Where Wolf was rougher, Hunter worshipped. Where Hunter was kinkier, Wolf was sweeter.

“I’m going to show you respect.” I smirked. She snorted derisively.

“And how do you plan to do that?”

“By burying myself between your thighs.”

Hunted By Them was completely addictive and the steam in here was imaginative and hot AF. Even though this was on the shorter side, the plot and relationship development didn't fail to impress me. I've never read any books by Jo so this is my first and it definitely will not be my last.

Not for me

There is just to much going on here, And the wrap up was really undesirable. The book was ok until 60%, and then it was just a completely wild tale. Way to much story, and not enough pages to get through it. Hunter was an ok mate, but wolf. I just didn't care for him. The crudness of the way he talked to her during a lot of interactions. Yeah, no. Our H is a r@pe survivor, and yet he's calling her degraded names during intimate moments? Just no!

I was a bit conflicted with this story. I gave it 3 stars because I thought the concept itself was a very clever and unique way to put a spin on this fairy tale. The creativity was good and it felt like it’s own story while still being related to the source material.

On the other hand, this story is way too short for how much stuff the author is trying to fit into it. There are a lot of great plot threads, but there are ultimately too many and they get a bit tangled up. Unfortunately, we don’t really get answers to all of the questions that the author presents and toward the end things start to get really rushed and confused as she’s trying to wrap it all up. There are some spots toward the end where continuity is an issue like when they’re in the hospital room with Granny and Freya says something about Damien (by name) and the next page Granny says Damien’s name and Freya is confused as to why Granny knows Damien’s name. I also couldn’t tell what was going on with Doc at the end and in the epilogue because he’s mentioned twice but those mentions are very in contrast with one another (I don’t wanna give away spoilers though). I had to reread a few parts at the end to try and keep things straight because the explanation of everything happens very quickly instead of being unveiled a bit at a time. There were also quite a few mentions of different people who ‘looked familiar’ but we didn’t really get explanations for all of those instances.

Since the story is on the shorter side, we also don’t get enough relationship development, especially considering the dynamic of their relationships. I was cringing a bit at the sex scenes, knowing what we know about the FMCs dark past and how they immediately treat her. It felt really harsh and also unrealistic when you see her reactions. It’s marketed as a dark romance, so I did expect it to a degree, but it didn’t feel like it was developed enough to give those scenes the necessary amount of depth. I would have preferred a little more build up and also a little more aftercare at some point (not necessarily right away, but maybe after she unveils to them more of her history- her past doesn’t affect their perceptions as much as I would have expected it to).

Again, this story is pretty interesting and unique as far as the plot goes and I think given some more pages the author could really expand this into something special. I had no issues with the writing itself or the grammar or anything like that. The twist in the story was actually pretty good and I didn’t see it coming. This felt a bit more like a novella than a full length standalone (even though it is technically a full length book, I think it’s the fact there is so much information and just not enough time to address all of the plot lines & relationships). I think it could use more development and probably about 25-30% more length.

Little Red Riding Hood With A Twist

Are you a fan of Tillie Cole’s Hades Hangman Series….
imagine if it was a paranormal, ménage, Little Red Riding Hood, friends to enemies to lovers dark romance?

Have I got your attention yet?

This is Jo’s twisted take on Little Red Riding Hood, we have a traumatised but fierce FMC and as this has Omegaverse undertones an Alpha & Beta MMCs
The plot keeps you guessing what is coming next but there are plenty of secrets to unpack and did I mention the steamy bits yet?

There seems to be no limit to what genre Jo can successfully write.

This book is phenomenal and everything I didn't know I needed so many plot twists that I didn't see coming, keeping me hooked from start to finish. Definitely would enjoy this as a series to see more of the characters and how they could grow.
Definitely add this book to your to be read list you don't want to miss

Oh man this was a good read! There were so many twists and turns that were totally unexpected, really great storyline with some bold and unique ideas on shifters and shifter lore. Also, Hunter and Wolf were flipping filthy and I loved it. The only complaint that I have is that the confrontation Freya had with Hunter and Wolf felt rushed. I absolutely loved that she was standing up for herself and her feelings and in doing so revealed her past trauma and I felt that it just wasn't addressed by the guys other than them feeling guilt. I would have loved for them to grovel and apologize a bit more for some of their behavior in light of that. I also felt like the Mariah issue wasn't really resolved either, like why did she allude to being with Wolf the night before. I don't know it just left me feeling underwhelmed when it felt like a pivotal moment in their relationship. BUT please don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book and loved how the ideas felt fresh and new. This is definitely a book you won't want to put down!

I have loved Jo McCall's mafia series and now she steps into the paranormal, with a twist on a Fairytale classic and she killed it again. It may not rival her mafia stories, but I loved this story and hope she explores the paranormal romance world again. 4.5 stars for Hunted By Them.

Little Red Riding Hood gets a makeover living in a world of wolves herself. She still meets Granny and instead of one hunter, she has two. There were twists and turns and a curve ball I didn't see until it was right on top of me. Honestly, I could read it again and still find little surprises in it.

A great remake of a fairytale with a darker twist and some burning hot steam.
.
.
.
Freya is on the run from the only life she has ever known. Her family has literally given her to the wolves but she won't go quietly, everything she thought she loved about her life and her home has been shattered. She'd rather die than live in their hands anymore.
'Up until today, my life had always felt like a fairy tale. But the problem with fairy tales was that although they all started with Once upon a time, they didn't always end with happily ever after.'

Wolf and Hunter are the presidents of the Bad Wolf Club and something is going on in their town. They are determined to hunt down all those who would attempt to destroy what they've built. Something is on the air and it will change everything for them.

When finding the half-dead woman on the edge of the river, Hunter is immediately possessive and protective but cautious. The only problem is no matter how much he tries to ignore the draw to her. Wolf feels it too, but he's much warier of the stranger and what she's doing in their town along with everything else going on.

Freya awakes in a strange place and she may be safe but for how long. She won't wait around to find out and luckily after managing an escape she finds a kind old dinner owner who everyone affectionately calls Granny. With a safe space to hide out, Freya hopes the worst is behind her but when Granny is attacked Freya's inner beast pushes to the surface.

Wolf and Hunter rush to help Granny but finding a huge red wolf is not what they expected and when they trap it and she turns out to be their runaway rescue they end up with more questions than answers. The one known is that she is their mate and she's either in trouble or she is the trouble.
"I'm not going to lose her." Not when she was the first one to set our souls on fire. She was fire and light. Summer and spring. All the best things we could ever want. And she was ours.'

Happy Reading.

I’ve read everything this new author has on KU and I’m glad because if I had started with this book, I might not have picked up any more. I’ve come to realize this author doesn’t just like to add surprising plot twists but instead prefers to completely implode the entire world and everything you (and the MC) know about it. I compared her other books to the craziest soap opera plots of all time. This book is equally crazy and the storyline gets so complicated and goes so far off the rails at about 65-67% that it’s ridiculous. Along with the authors’ other books, things get so twisted and elaborate that it’s hard to follow. I’ve just got to suspend all thought of trying to follow along and quit trying to keep track all the deception and lies. I’m reading it for the steamy romance, which this book was severely lacking.
It felt like I’d just been dropped into one of those dramas Granny watched during our downtime. Soap operas, I believed she called them. A bit overdramatic for my taste.

A few other issues I had with book include some minor OW/OM sex details (that’s usually an automatic no for me). It’s not a lot, there’s some talk about the heroine’s long history of SA as well as the heroes promiscuous history (typical MC club book behavior) and one gets OW bj.

This is a RH/ menage but I wish it was spicier (it’s maybe a 3/5), and the dvp happened so fast with absolutely zero prep, it was just cringy not hot. There was knotting in this book but with such little description (most of the actual sex scenes are just a few sentences) it’s hardly worth including. Nothing about struggling with the knot, only that we assume it happens during sex and “the pulsating of his knot inside”.

Also note that a few of the main “bad guys” escape so it’s not a complete resolution, which I assume will carry over into future books.

Overall this author has potential but I liked her Shattered World Series a lot more (which is also somewhat incomplete but there’s future books planned). There’s just TOO MUCH plot craziness in EVERY book and not enough steamy romance in this RH book. The plot twists would be better broken apart and used across multiple series/ books instead of jamming them all into one overly complicated story. It also wouldn’t hurt to reveal the surprise twists slowly over time, making them easier to follow, instead of suddenly and completely blowing up the entire world and everything we thought we knew.

Twisty Red Riding Hood retelling!
This story follows Rey and her escape from a hellish life that’s all she’s known, she finds herself in the town of Haven which is supposedly a safe place but there’s definitely something darker going on! 😣
With the help of Granny she gets herself back on her feet, and she’s in the eye like of her two rescuers as well, two alphas Hunter and Wolf - one instantly knows she’s special and the, yeah he’s an a88 😬 but they soon realise what she is to them but they need answers first and foremost even if it is through questionable means!!
Under an attack Rey begins to realise what she is and gives into her connection to her mates - there are BDSM tropes here!
And she’s going to need those connections as things slowly begin to come to light about the Collective, the compound and the company encroaching in town 😳😳
There’s a final showdown, where Rey and her mates really come into their own, and wow I really was not expecting that epic twist 😮😮
I wasn’t particularly taken with the two male characters and their treatment of Rey especially after she reveals her traumatic back story but the twists in this plotline are mind blowers and I definitely did not see them coming and that’s what made this book for me! 😃

Love This Twisted Red Riding Hood Tale!! ❤️❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review

Another phenomenal book written by Jo McCall. She really knows how to spin a fantastic tale of finding love with a touch of danger, suspense, darkness and an amazing HEA. This Red Riding Hood twisted tale was definitely that, very twisted with a shifter cult that’s cruel and delusional. Throw in a couple of Gods whose souls are trapped within unknowing shifters and you’ve got a chaotic story that you won’t want to put down.

Freya grew up on the Compound thinking that was the safest place in the world….until one night and one terrible ritual has her running to a cliff and taking her chances wanting to escape one way or another. Wolf and Hunter are brothers not by blood and best friends, both leaders of their pack and their MC club. Out on a drive they smell blood and find an injured Freya. These three’s story will leave you so thoroughly engrossed and wanting more. The attraction and connection is the ff the charts, they are of course fated.

This is a steamy, on the edge of your seat story you won’t want to pass up. The men are OTT Alpha males and our FMC may be naive about the world but she is strong, fierce and sassy too. She may be an Omega but she’s also an Alpha. This is a book I most definitely recommend. It was absolutely fantastic.

I might be his mate, but I wasn't about to make it easy on him. If he wanted me, he would have to earn me. I was through being a pawn.

"Hunted By Them" is a shifter menage standalone, based on the fairytale of little red riding hood. Whenever I read a fairytale retelling, I think it's magical how some authors manage to incorporate all the different elements of the original story and give it a massive twist. That's precisely what this author did; every character is there and plays their own little role in a story with plenty of turns along the way.

Even though this isn't a massive book, it's still filled with plenty of spice between the three main characters. The men are everything you might expect from two alpha's in a motorcycle club, and they have some learning to do about real women before they can be happily mated. Even though I enjoyed this story, I ended up with a four star rating because it felt a little rushed at times. It's something I struggle with sometimes in standalones, and I missed some character and relationship building in this story. But I do suggest this book to those who like kinky fast burn stories, with insta-lust and an interesting storyline.

Did I enjoy this book? YESS!!
Will I be rereading it? ABSOLUTELY
Would I recommend it? YESSS!!!!

This is a fairy tale retelling mixed with omegaverse, MC, magic, and sinister plots. I loved everything about the story. It starts off strong and just kept me turning the pages until the very end.

Freya is on the run. She's leaving behind her hellish pack dealing in some very dark magic. When her bid for freedom lands her at the feet of Wolf and Hunter. They're part of an MC and they're naturally suspicious of this new face in their town. What follows is a fast paced story with some crazy turns.

I loved Freya's character. She's a survivor and even though she's been through some awful things she's not letting that break her. There's some primal play in this that leads to some 🌶 moments. The relationship is a bit more of a fast burn. I really liked Hunter and Wolf even though there were moments they were being A-holes.

I can't wait to read what comes next cause hopefully there's going to be more books set in this world.

Hunted by Them is a standalone novel in the Fairytale with a Twist series and is a retelling of Red Riding Hood. Wolf and Hunter are Alpha Shifters and the Co-Presidents of a MC. Freya wax raised as a chosen one in a shifter cult.

This is the first book I have read in the Fairytales with a Twist series. I was excited for a spicy and Suspenseful take on Red Riding Hood. I liked that Hunted by Them was completely it's own storyline and not just a retelling of the original fairytale with spicy scenes thrown in. I found the book lacking in the spicy department, especially for a Jo McCall book. There are 2 or 3 mildly spicy scenes. At times the progression of the story was confusing to follow, but keep reading and it all works out by the end.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy retelling of fairytale and for readers who like shifter stories.

YALL!! This book was absolutely amazing! 🔥🔥
I'm 100% loving the "Fairytales with a twist" series so far.
This one in particular has so many aspects that I enjoyed.. the omegaverse, MFM, and light BDSM scenes. (Especially loved the praise and degradation kinks throughout the story).
Besides that, I really enjoyed the story overall. Freya is a very sheltered shifter who ends up running into best friends, Hunter and Wolf, who just so happens to be her mate, while running for her life.
I found the story well-written and keeping me guessing all the way through it. Legit screamed at some of the bombshells dropped. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy some mindless smut every now and again, but I normally need a good storyline to really get into a book and Jo McCall definitely delivered!
For sure my favorite little red riding hood retelling!

Hunted by Them is the the second story from the Fairytales with a Twist Collection. It’s a multiple author collection of some of your favorite fairytales, with a dark & steamy twist. You better be ready for this take on Little Red Riding Hood. Jo definitely brought it with the DARK & NAUGHTY. Let me be clear this is dark and has quite a few triggers so if you have any doubts please check. You can find a full list of triggers on the authors website. This was a stay up all night read straight through for me. I couldn’t put it down. The twists and turns that you don’t see coming where so good. If your not new to Jo McCall you know she’s not shy and she didn’t hold back here either. All I have to say is Wolf & Hunter oh my!!!! This is a definite recommend for me. As always make sure your comfortable with what your reading. Grab this book and enjoy the ride, Happy Reading Book Besties💙

For the second book in the Fairytales with a Twist series we have a retelling of Red Riding Hood. Hunted By Them begins with our FMC Freya running from her pack. She will go to any length to get away from this, and her actions land her in the small town of Haven.

I wasn't sure about the two main guys at first, they are both very dominant and in some ways, a little abusive to the FMC which did annoy me at first with the way at least one of them treated her because at that point he didn't know about her past. I warmed up to them as the book went on, yes they are possessive alphaholes but they do want to protect Freya.

It's a story with a lost of twists and turns and definitely some surprising and shocking reveals along the way. Can't wait to see what comes next in this series of books.

So, this was an interesting take on red riding hood retelling. And I enjoyed it, though it was confusing in parts and the plot development was a tad bit chaotic.

Like, it seems as if lots of tropes were just mashed together, and while usually, I wouldn't mind, this time I thought that it was kind of forced. I enjoy a good omegaverse, but here it was rushed and not fully explained (at least in my opinion, maybe I'm used to omegaverse in manga and not in books as I rarely read omegaverse trope in books).

Now, the characters were great, Wolf was a jerk, but I did enjoy Freya and Hunter. Now spicy scenes were great but could have been more intense and we could have gotten a bit more of them!

Hunted By them is part of the Fairytales With A Twist series of standalones. This was my first Little Red Riding Hood retelling and I am here for it! Plus it has wolf shifters AND motorcycle club! What more could you ask for…oh right, it is also why choose with two sexy, motorcycle riding, protective alphas! I absolutely loved the world building in this story…I could clearly see everything playing out in my head as I read. To me, that is what makes Jo McCall such an amazing writer! This book will suck you in from the very beginning and toss you around a bit with all the twists and turns. I fell in love with Freya, Hunter, and Wolf. I hope we get some more from this world because I’m in love! Fantastic story!

Rey escapes from her current, nightmarish world and finds herself in Haven, a place that is supposed to be like it's namesake, but has some dark problems. Granny helps Rey get established, and she meets two men, Hunter and Wolf, who have a very keen interest in her. Life is going good for once, until she is under attack and relying on herself and those around her to get out of it unscathed.

This is a twist on the classic tale of Red Riding Hood, and it is one of the best ones I've read. I love how the author took the basics of the story and all of its characters and twisted it into something even better. Rey, Hunter and Wolf have a menage going on, and with some BDSM elements, their relationship gets steamy fairly quickly.

Loving this series…

I’m really enjoying this Fairytales with a Twist series. This one is a play on Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. Freya is our heroine and she is fierce. She escapes her packs compound after she sees what happens to the other “chosen” for a ritual.
As they try to catch her she has only one decision left to make either to jump off a cliff or let them kill her.
She survives the jump and is found by Wolf and Hunter 2 alpha wolves that feel instantly connected to her. This was steamy and action packed.

I like the twists in this story. You never see the bad guy coming! It’s a unique tale and I look forward to reading the rest of this series. Each Author has brought their own rendition and put their own twist on a famous childhood fairytale.

I loved this! This was a great red riding hood story with the omegaverse twist! I immediately was sucked into this novel. Freya and her Mates, Wolf & Hunter, are great together! You get that insta attachment with them being fated mates. There are so many twists and unexpected turns in this story it's constantly keeping you on your toes. Especially the ending! I was not expecting that twist! I did have to go back and reread as I got a little confused. I think it was because I happened to put my kindle down at the wrong time.

Overall I loved this story and it was really enjoyable to read. This was also a first from this author and I will be adding her to my list to check out future books.

This is my first Red Riding Hood retelling and let me tell you, it was fabulous! This story starts off fast and dives right into the rollercoaster that is Freya's life. This story was very well written and left you sitting on the edge of your seat needing to know what comes next. This book took quite a few turns that left my head spinning but the ending was still perfect. The spice in this book will absolutely leave you in a wet seat. Wolf and Hunter know exactly how to take care of their little omega and I may or may not be jealous of a fictional character. If you're ready for a wild ride then dive right in!

This is the first book I've read by this author and I can honestly say I will be reading more of her books. I absolutely loved this retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. It had several twists and turns that left you wanting more and on the edge of your seat. There were several that I didn't see coming. I literally couldn't put it down once I started reading it. There was several very hot and spicy scenes that will leave you wanting more. The chemistry between Freya, Wolf, and Hunter was off the charts. If you like spicy fairytale retellings with some added in omegaverse elements thrown in you should definitely read this book.

When Jo McCall says this book is with a twist, she means it. This is definitely not the fairytales you read as a kid. There was a lot of uncertainty as I read through these pages. This was not a book that I figured out what was happening until it happened.
I love a good fated mates story to begin with, throw in some twist and another mate in the mix and I am right there ready to read it. This book the twist seriously and taking elements from shifters and omegaverses Jo McCall created a world of her own. The spice was spicy and the plot was thick, all the ways I want a book to wrap me up.

Fantastic!
It held my interest and I didn't want to put it down. I thought it was such an original take on an omegaverse-ish, Fairtytale-ish story. There were secrets and a few twists, that definitely surprised me!
There was also action, a bit of suspense, a little magic and steam. The spicy scenes were so hot!!🔥 🔥
I really liked Freya. Freya was dealt a bad hand, but it only made her into the bad*ss she becomes/is. Wolf and Hunter were not only perfect for her, but delicious 😋.
I loved it!

Holy mother was this read good. I mean I was expecting it to be because of who the author is but dang she blew my expectations out the water. This story was filled to the brim with twists and turns and unexpected situations that kept me on the edge of my seat. I am a die hard shifter romance girl and this baby was phenomenal. Hunter and Wolf are sexy, dirty and will have your squirming in your chair. Then when they all get together their heat and fire will melt the pages of your kindle. So freaking sexy. Another amazing read.
