Lauren Taylor’s life was always full of pain. Her mother used to give her medicines that caused a lot of pain. Her boyfriend, since she was 14, helped her to escape from her mother's care and always says that he loves her very much, even if periodically he hits her. She used to be in hospital: first with stomach pain and later with broken ribs, wrists and concoctions.

She is a good patient and a lot of doctors recognise and remember her. But not everybody understands her: does she like being sick or is she causing all these injuries herself to get doctors' attention and care? She never told anybody about her boyfriend's abuse and everyone around thinks that they have a perfect relationship.

But one day her boyfriend Josh disappears and she is found in the water near drowning with a serious head injury. The police suspect that she killed Josh and faked the accident to get out of suspicion. Even her best friend and Josh's family don't believe her. The only person she can trust and who supports her is Dr Menon who is deeply in love with her.

The story of Lauren's life is revealed in the form of two timelines: the past and the present until they both converge together. This is a person's hard life who is used to the pain and is always afraid to be left alone without support and understanding. The only child of a single mother, she dreams about a family around her. She can't believe in her ability to manage life. But Dr Menon shows her that this is not right and that she has to prove to herself and the people around her that she is a clever, strong person. The progress on her path to freedom is shown gradually and we see all her emotions and thoughts, and all changes in her character and behaviour.

The book is written in an easy way to read with some suspense in it, but, in my opinion, it is a bit too long. This is why I rated it only 4 stars.

This is a genre where authors have almost entirely run out of new ideas, and most of the stories are appearing stale. I took this up thinking there would be a touch of intrigue in the story, but that was not to be. This story is however, less contrived and simpler than many in this genre and that is to its credit.

Lauren has had to visit hospital far more than what is usual for people her age. It turns out that her mother had mental health issues, based on Lauren’s version of events. Is it possible that Lauren is hurting herself? Lauren lives with her boyfriend of many years – Josh, and their relationship is a stressful one. She confides a few aspects of her relationship with her doctor Dr Abhilash Menon, and they grow closer to each other. In the latest instance, Lauren was on a jet-ski which she says stalled and she finds herself later in hospital. Josh usually accompanies her but is now untraceable. Lauren claims Josh was not with her this time as they had just broken up, but many do not believe her as Josh’s car is parked in their usual place when they go jet-sking.

The story is told in timelines from the present and past – how Lauren & Josh met and how their relationship evolves. The pace is very slow and many sections simply do not move the story forward at all. While there are charming and nice aspects to Lauren and Abhilash’s relationship, it is not fully explored. I felt there were better ways to end the story, though this is not too bad. There is this character of Nick – Abhilash’s roommate which comes across as a waste.

Overall, I struggled to stay engaged with the story though there are positive aspects of Lauren’s personality. I liked the simplicity of the story as well, which is more honest than most in this genre.

I think this is the third thriller I've read by Alex Stone and I have found her to be a bit hit and miss. Unfortunately, this one was a complete miss for me. I couldn't even see the point of it. It is meant to be a psychological thriller...even a domestic thriller would suffice...but it reads more like a messed up romance/love triangle. I made it through 20% of it before I wondered what the hell was going on as nothing was going anywhere. It was just a bunch of back and forth between the past and the present, and a slow build with a speed that was glacial. After 20% I want there to be some direction at least. But all I had was an unsure patient who ended up in a relationship with her treating ED doctor. Um...boundaries, people?

Lauren has had a tough life. She grew up being taught that love was pain. And now she's an adult in the casualty department with a suspected broken wrist. Staff have seen her come through their doors on a number of occasions with similar injuries, and the frequency of them noted. Dr Menon sees through her facade, the wall she has built up around herself.

Lauren's medical history is extensive, going back to her childhood with a mother suspected of harming her suffering Munchausen by Proxy syndrome. Her boyfriend Josh has always known about Lauren's "illnesses" and when her mother died when she was 15, she moved in with Josh and his family...and they became her second family. They gave her a sense of belonging. Until Josh told her she would always be "just a guest".

Now Lauren wakes up in hospital after a head injury following a jet ski accident. And Josh is missing. The police are there to question her, believing she had something to do with his disappearance. But Lauren swears that Josh was not with her the day she took the jet ski out. So where is Josh?

Throughout the course of the investigation, and the to-ing and fro-ing of the story, Lauren and Dr Menon (Abhilash) have developed a friendship that grows closer despite the boundaries that should separate them. Not only that, Abhilash is due to return to India in a few months to marry a bride his family have chosen for him. What I don't understand is why they continue this affair or relationship or whatever it is, when they know it isn't going to last. That he is just going to leave for India and marry another woman he hasn't even met. I don't get arranged marriages but I do respect that it is part of their culture. What I really don't get is they both knew this and yet they still continued seeing each other. To me, it was pointless. In fact, that is just how I pretty sum this book up - pointless. The whole book to me just seemed pointless.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I just don't get what the author was trying to communicate with this book. What the whole point of it even was. To me, it was just a waste of a few hours I can never get back.

I would like to thank #AlexStone, #Netgalley, #BoldwoodBooks and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #TheGoodPatient in exchange for an honest review.

"The corner of his mouth twisted upwards in a hopeful smile. 'So, Lauren,' he whispered, 'did you do it?'"

Lauren has been with Josh since college. Their plan was to get married and fill a home with children. Something changed all of that. And she Lauren wakes up in the hospital from a severe head injury that caused a concussion, the secrets of the past start coming up and revealing the truth . . .

This was a solid thriller. I was intrigued by Lauren, her way of thinking and her relationships. There was something so off with her and her story but I didn't figure it out until the end. This story did slow way down in the middle which waned my interest though.

not a “psychological thriller”

This book was frustrating to read. The “secret” the main character was hiding was so obvious from the beginning yet the writer danced around it like the reader wouldn’t or couldn’t figure it out. The main character’s internal dialogue was incredibly “on the nose,” and characters felt like predictable tropes.

The Good Patient is a standalone character-driven psychological mystery/drama by author, Alex Stone. This is the third book released by this author, and I think it is the best one yet. Alex Stone writes some of the most psychologically complex characters I’ve ever read. I noted in my reviews for the previous two books, how much I enjoy her characters and this one is no exception. The story is paced well and overall quick and easy to read. It made me want to keep reading to find out what happens. The story covers themes around child abuse and domestic violence, which may be triggering for some readers. I think Alex Stone is an excellent storyteller and I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings out next. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an opportunity to read an arc of this novel.

I kept waiting for this book to get better, but it seemed like every single page was Lauren’s inner dialogue repeating the same thoughts over and over. It was extremely boring, and even the “twist” was unsatisfying. I don’t quit books, so I was very happy when I finished this one.

Urmm... really. It's that easy! - me when I finished the book.

This story was read in like 3 parts.

1 - Started. Good premise. Intriguing. Why are there so many moments that seem eerie almost like foreshadowing. Really enjoyed the flipping of timelines, kept the story interesting.

2 - The book was dragging on. Felt like everyday was the same. Abhilash saying "leave him", Lauren saying "you make me stronger". The main story of Lauren's life, I'd already sussed out and so I was wondering where this book was going. Tbh I think I forgot Lauren's name. And I definitely forgot about Josh, her long-term boyfriend.

3 - Finishing for the sake of finishing as I'd gotten through most of the book. When the final twist came I expected more, or something.

Overall the book was boring to me and I didn't connect to any of the characters. Felt like a badly-done, cheesy romance or domestic suspense, that I didn't even enjoy, not a thriller. But most of the domestic bit was revealed quickly so I didn't really understand what else was going to happen. And I was right, nothing surprised me. Nothing gripped me. Overall it was mediocre.

I loved the twists and turns in this one. So many times I wanted to yell at the characters to watch out and don't be so darn gullible, because I could see things coming that they just weren't seeing, and I absolutely love that in a thrillery read. I like when things aren't so complicated that I feel like I need a secret decoder rings, but there's enough hidden that I feel like I've Scooby Doo'd some stuff. All in all, a great read!

I picked up this title thinking it was a medical thriller but it is more of a romance driven book with a
few thriller elements. Told in the first person, it is about Lauren who wakes up in the hospital after having a jet ski accident. Lauren has been in the hospital previously with a broken wrist and going further back she has had a childhood with a mother suspected of harming her with Munchausen by Proxy syndrome. The police become involved because Lauren's boyfriend Josh was thought to be with her on the jet ski but has not been found; Lauren insists Josh was not with her on the day she took out the jet ski.

Most of the book is about a newly developed friendship between Lauren and an understanding doctor named Dr. Menon. Dr. Menon who is originally from India, seems to spend most of his time giving Lauren inspirational speeches on the order of believe in yourself and she begins to fall in love with him. The then and now sections begin to tell us more about Lauren and her relationship with Josh who was abusive. Josh's family and Emily, Lauren's only friend somehow believe her job which was really supporting the couple to be an unpaid hobby, and they feel resentful of her for not doing more for Josh. There is never any mention of Lauren being given therapy for her childhood or having even one person who was nice to her until she meets the doctor. Along with the doctor we meet his roommate Dr. Nick who may also have a crush on Lauren.

This was a quick read but I never found the plot to be interesting. We didn't find out much about Lauren's childhood and when she was questioned and accused by the police without ever being offered an attorney, the story just seemed to be a pile on about how people everywhere were against this young woman. At times it did remind me of a young adult story or perhaps a Hallmark style movie. I finished it quickly and thought the writer was talented but it wasn't the right story for me. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC in exchange for a review.

We find Lauren in the hospital. And it appears as though this isn’t the first time. Her life seems to be one accident or incident after another leading to hospital visits starting from when she was very young with her mother and now with her live in boyfriend Josh. This time, she was on a jetski when she fell off and was found unconscious. She is certain she went out alone, but everything points to the fact that Josh went with her-especially the fact that Josh is now missing. Lauren’s doctor tries to make her see that her relationship with Josh is toxic while the investigators look into her past with her mother who suffered from Muchausens (now known as FII) and whether or not Lauren is suffering from it as well and if she did in fact have anything to do with what happen to Josh.
In the process of spending time with her doctor, they develop feelings for each other and Lauren starts to wonder if maybe he might be her future if she could be free of Josh.
The story is told in past and present timelines and Lauren is an unreliable narrator so you never know what to expect. This was a fun and twisting read that left me guessing til the end.

Should have been a short story

I have no idea why I kept reading this book. I just kept thinking that there had to be something interesting or at least different coming up. I was very disappointed.

The level of redundancy and sheer ridiculousness was overwhelming.

Do not bother with this one.

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really interesting concept and storyline. I liked the way it was written and the short, easy to read chapters. The pacing was nice and the writing had a good flow in the beginning, but then the pacing slowed and began to plod along. I wasn't too into the love aspects either. I wish it remained quicker paced and there were more important plot points throughout. I did still want to keep reading to find our more of the past timeline; I was very into the earliest timeline as I read. I liked the idea of the plot itself, but it got very convoluted during the end and some of the plot twists were just silly. But overall, it was a short and interesting read.

Lauren has complicated, unexplainable health issues and she is frequently admitted to the ED. Her mom is her biggest supporter and is by her side through each hospitalization. Their relationship might be even more complicated than Lauren’s unexplainable health issues. Lauren also has support from her seemingly-perfect boyfriend, Josh. The story picks up after Lauren decides to break up with Josh. She takes the jet-ski out and ends up unconscious in the ED. There, she is introduced to doctor Abhilash, who changes the trajectory of her life and makes her to question everything. The biggest question we are left with is: what happened to Josh? Was he with her on the jet-ski? Did he disappear without a trace?

I really was liking this story untilllll I wasn’t. I expected more thriller side or a happy ending. Yeah I got neither. Lauren was abused by her boyfriend. She met a doctor and fell in love with him. Left boyfriend. Hooked up with doctor. Doctor goes back to India for arranged marriage even though he “loved” her. Such shit.

Now as for the ex part I liked that it turned out he was behind a lot of the bad stuff that happened to her. However I did expect him to have killed her mom and that it was never a suicide. That was a missed opportunity.

Very underwhelming for a thriller with an abrupt ending and unresolved plot. I appreciate the attempt to navigate the psyche of the young protagonist following the psychological torment and child abuse sustained via Munchausen syndrome by proxy (now called FIIC: Fabricated or Induced Illness by Carers) from her mother, but the story lacked a lot of supporting detail to truly engage the reader. It was a struggle to read as evidenced by week it took me to finish.

I liked the then and now aspect of this book and I think it started well. But this whole “everything worked out okay” in the end was kind of ridiculous. The fact that all of a sudden Josh came back and apologized but then tried to attack her and the doctor was kind of an eye roll moment for me. The mum story also had several plot holes.

3.5 rounded up. I thought it was a really pleasant read. I thought the twist at the end was okay, but a tad expectable. I thought the characters were written well and all in all it was a good book. I think I would like to read again, but it it isn't first on my recommend to others list.
