Charmed meets Pride and Prejudice

Like any good mysterious witch, Amaya seldom ventures further than the woods that surround her cottage. She fills her days with foraging, spell testing, and reading. Amaya would happily spend all her days and nights curled up with a steaming mug of tea or playing her harp. Anything would be preferable to trying to contain Rue, the chaotic runaway bride who suddenly appears on her doorstep insisting they're fated, mates. Rue is determined to take charge of her life and by extension Amaya's. She's convinced all she has to do is miss her own wedding, learn how to cook a decent stew and show Amaya what fate has in store.

If you’re a fan of shows like “I Love Lucy”, “Bewitched” or recent film adaptations of ‘Emma’ and 'Persuasion', you’ll love 'Debate and Decadence.'

well this was just a cozy little delight! a witchy cottagecore sapphic novella that's perfect for fall when you need something more on the light and fluffy side between spooky reads.

i thought the rue and amaya were a super cute pairing, very opposites attract. all the little details made this feel extra cozy. plus it's in a regency-esque setting which has very much been the vibe for me, so i'll prob be checking out more of this author's books.

Does the author read her reviews? I hope so because I'll need more of these two mains and their love story. Please, please more sapphic fiction. Pretty please.

This is the cutest effing story. It gave me several cupcake giggle fits and its coziness wrapped around me in their whimsical little world. Their banter was adorable, the world full of whimsy, and the characters unforgettable. This wasn't enough for me and I mean that as a compliment. I NEED MORE AMAYA AND RUE. Especially Rue, the cutest half-demon on the face of the planet with her tail and extremely sharp teeth.

Some authors struggle with the grumpy/sunshine dynamic, sometimes making the grumpy FMC too mean or the sunshine FMC too pollyanna. Not here. Their character descriptions really worked for me and I loved the cultural aspects sprinkled in. I'm honestly quite smitten.

No sex scenes in this story, but that's not necessary. I wanted to giggle and swoon and I got that.

If anyone has more recommendations for cozy romantasy with WOC sapphic leads, please send them my way! This is easily what I needed in my life. Sula Sullivan's writing style is eclectic, clever, and clear. I'll keep an eye out.

Oh, and the header art with their names! Too cute!

Five stars. Easily. ☆☆☆☆☆

PS: This is my 200th review, yay.

Kindle Unlimited.

A sweet novella, in that vein of cozy fantasy where it's just sweet ladies hanging out in a magical world, and forming a connection.

I did wish for a lot more depth, though. I was a bit disappointed that just when I thought we were getting somewhere it just suddenly ended.

Would still recommend.

This is a very cute, sweet, and wholesome sapphic romance novella between a witch and a half demon. Amaya likes her solitude and feels uncomfortable around people. When Rue arrives at her home to escape an unwanted marriage with a cousin, she claims that Amaya is who she's meant to be with. Amaya is sceptical but lets Rue stay with her. I had a lot of fun reading the interactions between Rue and Amaya. Amaya is not very chatty, but Rue is, so they balance each other out. This novella is compared to Pride and Prejudice and Charmed. Anyone who is a fan of one or both of those should check this out.

This was a cute little cozy novella with a runaway demon bride and a somewhat grumpy witch. Rue was sunshiny and tenacious, with insecurities that she masked behind a smile. Amaya was intelligent and compassionate, although she hid her compassion behind an aura of mystery. They were a cute couple.

Spice: 0/5

Triggers: judgy family, parent death (past)

A antisocial witch meets an over the top run away fae bride. Sprinkled in with honest conversations and solid communication, you have yourself the perfect little short book.

I was having a hard time meshing with one of our MC's Rue. She completely bombarded Amayas
"I think I like this little life" moment lol. she was a little overwhelming but I promise once you hit that 40% mark these characters make you melt. I feel like it was realistic. Amaya seemed to feel affronted and annoyed with Rue so watching her grumpiness slowly melt away and turn to endearment towards Rue was precious. Anytime boundaries were crossed, or misunderstandings took place they talked about it. We love communication in romance, give us MORE.

The cover is precious and so was seeing the magical towns folk trudge over to the grumpy witches house for help. Although Amaya enjoyed being alone she was a staple in the community and had a soft spot for helping others, which added to the cozy vibes of this book. This author is definitely being added to my list of gentle black romance books. AND they're short? sign me up lol.

A short, cute & cozy fated mate read. This novella was adorable. I loved the POC representation🫶🏾 The sweet moments made my heart flutter a bit.

What would you think if someone showed up to your door claiming that you are meant to be together?

Fun, quick, and cute little cozy sapphic fantasy. Amaya and Rue are such fun characters. The story is pretty simple but interesting. This is very low angst, so it was a perfect low stress read to cozy up with on this first snowy day of the year.

overall this was a precious historical fantasy romance. its sapphic, fated mates (so a little insta-lovey, if thats your thing or maybe not), and closed door. I had a nice time reading this novella and found myself smiling a bunch.

sometimes it was hard to really tell the difference between Amaya & Rue, and a little bit more mightve been nice, but i still recommend it! especially if you want a wholesome novella to enjoy. only thing id slightly warn about would be mentions of an arranged marriage & casual ableism. nothing much, its very cozy! 🥰

🌿🌸✨ Debate and Decadence by Sulla Sullivan ✨🌸🌿

⭐️.75/5

I had such high hopes for this novella and it ended up falling short. Conceptually, this novella had everything needed for the perfect quick, cosy, witchy read; however, I found it to be extremely flawed, despite the numerous rave reviews on Goodreads and online.

The novella was alleged to be Charmed meets Pride and Prejudice, which is perfect for fans of “I Love Lucy”, “Bewitched”, and the most recent adaptations of “Emma” and “Persuasion”. And is described as a “standalone novella featuring two black femmes, whimsical magic and hilarious misadventures”.

This novella follows the dual perspectives of Amaya and Rue. Amaya is a witch, who spends her days foraging, brewing potions, paste-jewellery design, spell-testing, reading and creating spells, charms and birth charts for customers in the nearby village. For the most part, Amaya rarely leaves the comfort of her cottage and is somewhat of a recluse. She is going about her daily life when she receives a visitor, in the form of half-demon Rue, who has run away from her family who are attempting to force her into a marriage with her Cousin. She turns up at Amaya’s cottage, proclaiming them to be fated mates and does all in her power to convince the sombre witch of this fact. Rue must hide for three days in order to prevent the marriage from taking place, giving her ample time to convince Amaya that they are destined to be together.

As mentioned above, there are a number of elements of this novella that were unique and should have set the book up for success. Firstly, the novella features an inclusive and diverse cast of characters. This sapphic romance features Amaya and Rue, who are both BIPOC characters. Thus making for an LBBTQ+ friendly, diverse, cosy read. In addition to the inclusivity, the magic system is also quite unique, with each character having a heart symbol, representing their interests, destiny, desires and fated mates. Amaya’s heart symbol is depicted as a “cluster of charms and cards. The symbol contained a variety of shapes, some pointy and some round, all coming together to create a figure” - my interpretation of which makes it almost runic in nature. Whereas Rue’s heart symbol is described as a wooden chest of fabric. Conceptually, this is quite unique, however, it was in dire need of further development.

The novella also boasts of a number of popular tropes such as fated mates, only one bed, forced proximity and grumpy/sunshine. Despite the inclusion of these tropes, I felt that they were quite forced for the sake of popularity. The character development was non-existent and I did not get on with either Amaya or Rue; both are quite juvenile. Rue is overly naive and comes across as childish and selfish - arguably manipulative. Whereas Amaya, comes across as rude rather than “grumpy” - which was disappointing. Neither character was particularly likeable and it took away from the overall plot which had potential.

The use of language and writing style is inconsistent - moving between overly formal “period” style writing and modern colloquialisms and mannerisms. I found myself cringing more than once for the language choices - with one character saying “whelp” on one occasion. The currency for this world is called “jingles” which was completely bizarre and didn’t really fit with the theming of the novella (it was giving me Christmas elf vibes).

Overall, I did not enjoy this novella - the intent and theory of the novel were much better than the actual execution. And whilst I was all for the concept, the writing style and characters made this one a no for me.

Overall: B

"Debate and Decadence" is a magical cozy fantasy. The story is about the sapphic romance between Amaya, a solitary witch living alone in her forest cottage, and Rue, the disruptive, bubbly, upper crust girl who claims they are fated to be together.

The two girls are an "opposites attract" relationship. Amaya's stoic, practical nature clashes with Rue's talkative, idealistic personality. I honestly disliked Rue forcing herself into Amaya's life at the beginning (mostly due to me seeing this happen so often in anime). At the start, Rue's personality did not help with that feeling but she did gradually grow on me. While she did have an upper-class upbringing with servants and a life of luxury, she was willing to cook, clean and do manual work to help make Amaya's life easier. It's was refreshing to see two people from completely different backgrounds try to understand each other rather than the usual trope of "rich person learning how the other half lives the hard way." These attempts at mutual understandings did help make some cute moments which did redeem Rue's initial impression.

There are a few downsides. One reason Rue runs to Amaya is due to Rue's perceived mistreatment by her family but this part isn't really resolved. There are some clunky sentences and punctuation errors. The world building was really lacking. I didn't really understand Amaya's magical abilities, Rue's heritage or how their society worked.

Otherwise I think this novella is a good choice if you need a cute, low stakes, short romance to tide you over.

Debate and Decadence

Favorite quote: Maybe you aren’t adventurous on your own, but together you perfectly shine.”

Rue possessed a gentle and benevolent spirit. She found solace and contentment in her peaceful existence, but her curiosity was piqued when she first laid eyes on Rue. To her, Rue was the epitome of beauty, the most captivating woman she had ever encountered. Amaya concealed her fondness for Rue's company, cherishing the possibility of a destined connection.

This is a magical tale featuring two women of color, brought immense joy to my heart. I wholeheartedly endorse this sweet and concise story.

If only the narrative extended further! The profound bond between the two main characters, their ability to engage in meaningful conversations, resonated deeply with me. Rue yearned for a profound connection, and it struck a chord within me.

My excitement knew no bounds upon stumbling upon this story. Not only does it center around a woman of color, but both characters are women of color. Its sapphic nature makes it the embodiment of my heartfelt dreams, all woven into one enchanting masterpiece. I truly relished this tale, readily available on Amazon, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Such a beautiful, cottagecore fever dream of a story. Amaya, the local witch, is just living a quiet life in the forest. That is until local force of nature Rue comes into her life. Rue, a half-demon socialite trying to escape the arranged marriage between her and a cousin, believes Amaya to be her fated mate, and does her best to show her that they are meant to be. Sullivan has a gift for no-spice, swoony regencies, and her playing with light supernatural here is a lovely treat. A tiny bit short, but Sullivan does a great job in creating a very full and engaging story. I’d love to see a second story exploring the town more. If you’re looking for sweet, quick read to end your 2024, you can’t go wrong with Debate and Decadence!

This book was so cute and cuddly! It's set in the woods and centres Amaya (a witch) and Rue's (a rich demon's) budding romance. They were absolutely adorable together. I could scream! The book is lowstakes, sweet and funny in an unassuming way. Loved it.

I just wished there was a little bit more pining and follow through. The author picked up - and subsequently dropped - certain plot points that could have developed into interesting conflicts or just moments where we can learn more about each character individually and as a couple. She also could have done a bit more to make Amaya's personality more palpable.

That said, I highly recommend this book! It would be a great autumn/winter read.

I liked the concept of the story and the inclusive and diverse characters and world. Some of the banter was really enjoyable.

I really missed depth of character though. And any depth of the world, the village, their families or anything outside of the cottage. The reasons for their actions or choices. The two MCs felt like 2D tropes just whipped up and plonked into a plot trope, and in a circumstances trope.

I don't know if the e-reader version was to blame but there were also a number of mistakes in the language and grammar that the editorial process should have gotten I think. That made the reading harder.

i feel kind of bad rating this book so low, because i didn’t hate it, but at the same time, it did absolutely nothing for me. i expected a cute little novella and on page, it was exactly that, but it just didn’t make me feel anything. i really tried connecting to rue and amaya, but i couldn’t make myself care about any of them, not to mention the romance. the interactions were fun at times and there definitely was potential, but i just wanted much more from it. i’m also in a huge reading slump, so that may be a factor, but this one didn’t help me get out of it at all and technically, it fits my likings perfectly. so there’s that.

(3.5/5) First of all, the cover of this novella is so cute. I love the colors and it was easy for me to use the cover as a reference when I was picturing the characters. Amaya and Rue are such opposites, but it was precious watching Amaya basically melt for Rue in her own way. Especially since Rue is just a lot. haha The novella takes place over four days and it doesn't feel too short. Of course, you'd love to know more about the characters but I think the author did a good job with having a successful cozy novella.

This is a cute short read I'd recommend to anyone.

A recluse witch gets the sudden visit of a demon that thinks they are fated mates and meant to be together. This book had potential and I liked the beginning but it felt underdeveloped. it is a novella but I think the story could have been tighter and sacrifice some elements that were not necessary so that it flowed easier. it also felt like it had an abrupt ending.
Amaya, the witch sometimes came off as rude instead of grumpy and that was a little off putting. IT was still an interesting read.

Absolutely loving the witch-in-the-woods cozy stories, and this novella captivated me from the start! It's perfectly sweet and charming (Rue reminded me of Haley from Stardew Valley). The banter is top-tier, and there's just the right amount of tension to keep you hooked. Even with a few minor editing quirks, the linear plot progression and overall writing made this novella feel incredibly satisfying.

Got this one for free thanks to the amazing author. Short story without any heat. Fated mate plot with all the vibes of a good comfy read with some lovely POC Representation. I just loved reading about the growing relationship between the two and how the author put into scenes to connect to the time period along with their ethnicity

This was a cottage core DREAM. It was sapphic, cozy, magical, whimsical, and witchy. Rue shows up at Amaya’s cottage claiming they are fated mates and the next four days of non stop chatter, sweet moments that made my heart sing, and foraging ensue. Fans of Legends and Lattes or Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea will absolutely love this novella and the incredible characters.

4 stars. This was so precious! The cover caught my attention but then the ‘Charmed meets Pride and Prejudice’ tagline completely sold me. I’m glad that I picked it up because this was really good! Amaya and Rue were so cute together and this was such an adorable little romance. I wanted more by the end and wish that it had been just a bit longer.

3.75 rounded up. VERY cute and cozy read especially for the fall. The romance was exactly what I was looking for. The main reason I gave this rating is because it's such a light and fluffy read that there wasn't too much of an actual plot. And that's honestly not a bad thing in this case! It just wasn't what I expected. But I would still recommend this adorable read!

Magical and sweet

I really enjoyed reading this novella. The chemistry between Anaya and Rue was absolutely sweet, charming, and a bit familiar. I'd love to read more about n these two in their world or possibly on their travels. If you're looking for a cozy, sapphic, whimsical read, then this is the one for you.

Unique, sweet, and cozy! A quick and quirky sapphic read.

Their banter was so much fun!

Amaya shrugged. “You are not a witch.”
“What if I marry a witch?”
“Then you are the wife of a witch.”
“But if I married a Duke, I would be a Duchess,” Rue said with a pout.
“Entirely different.”

3.5 stars rounded up. This book is a closed door Sapphic black cozy fantasy romance. It was really cute and fun and I did enjoy it. I just wish this book would have been a full length novel. I understand that it is a novella but the world building wasn't very clear and I wish I could have seen more of the connection between Rue and Amaya.
