wearing a little thin

No one is allowed to win a fight or be significant in any way other than jinwoo. Every event is set up in such a way as to make us aware of how awesome jinwoo is. All continuity and events are only important to the degree that they are important to or say something about jinwoo.

This worked for several books, while we were engaged in the rise of the character and did t have a large enough sample size to just presume he was going to win every fight he engages in. Now we do and honestly it’s made the series seem kinda like an animated series for 12 year old boys rather than a coherent story.

Series has been good up to this point, but I think I’ll put it down. Thank you for all the hard work and the amazing experience through the first six books. I’ll look forward to more of your work in the future.

I like that this mf didn't die even after death. But! Final battles are making everything worse. I tend to have some hope on the last volume, though

“I am the history of your struggle, the trace of your resistance, and the reward of your pain.”

Webnovels tend to get repetitive. It makes sense since it's originally released periodically over the span of years. Unfortunately, the aspect that this author deemed important and worth repeating over and over was nationalism.

We get it ! Korea is a small country, everyone looks down on it, neighbours like to plot against it, look how the tables have turned, look how everyone are bowing their heads now.. WE. GET. IT !
Did I need to go through hundreds upon hundreds of pages of this BS even in the 7th volume ? I've already put up with it for 6 FULL volumes ! Over 1800 pages ! Can't you give me a break !!

I'm so fed up I'm dropping a star for this.. I don't even feel like discussing plotholes and whatnot. I've already put up my favourite quote up there..

The real battle has begun and I am stressed. Jinwoo has an unbelievable task ahead of him, and he’s completely alone in all of it. Yeah, he had the aid of his soldiers, but they are there from necessity. And I really hope Mrs. Sellner’s prediction doesn’t come true. I need volume 8 now.

Wow

Every book keeps up in the auntie. What a fun series. The writing style is a bit stiff but that might be translation. Overall still great. Can't wait for the next book. We're at the end game now. The MC is a respectable human Social geaces are Sometimes quiet and perhaps seemingly rude but He bares no malice despite his incredible power. Too bad he hasn't found a way to help the humans level up as he has. But it's a little late in the game now. Looking forward to the next book.

This time 4 stars, some logical errors started appearing in the story.

*******Spoilers**********
Jinwoo's most powerful skill is murderous intent. He does not use it often however.
Thanks to it he had killed Taeshik in the early books.
With the same skill he could have killed 3 monarchs together before he died. Or he could have killed the insect monarch sooner.

I didn’t think this could get even better. It surprises me again every single time. I can’t wait to read the next book, but I will have to be patient. For whoever thought about reading Solo Leveling… DO IT!! I highly recommend it!!!

Okay first of all that ending. This really does feel like the final arc. I've noted that Solo Leveling feels like one giant story. Not to it's detriment because the mini arcs have been mostly satisfying. But based on, what I presume is the penultimate book now, this has been a great setup for a slam down on the next book closing off pretty much everything. We got a LOT of answers and a few revelations that don't feel unearned. From this perspective looking back Solo Leveling has gone a pretty good job of layering the foreshadowing of what was to come.

So this starts with choosing the successor of President Go. Now between everything being labeled the Hunter's Association, or the Association of Hunters half the time I have no idea what organization is which. But President Go and his boy Director Woo stood out as individuals. We got to meet Tree Beasts. Behru and Igris go through another puberty. Finally Jinwoo gets new daggers. All that and it's just the first chapter.

Then Jin-woo finally prepares to fight some of the biggest of bads and get a touch of vengeance. A battle whose outcome is pre-determined by the nature of story telling but none the less remains enlightening as we get some answers and JinWoo gets some answers. All of which serves as basically an appetizer for what just gets teased in the end.

Honestly I lost track when the origin of all things was happening. The argument seemed to be made that the original Shadow Monarch fought for this time and then that time and then this team again. But I completely could not follow WHY all the switching happened. The first one made perfect sense and then after that I lost track. In part because the titles or should I say Titles) appeared to swing back and forth. Envoys, Monarches, Fragments, Rulers...

The capture of Regia, the Monarch of the Beginning, the King of Giants, shifted the balance of power, and the other Monarchs realized just how dire the situation was. It was then that the Shadow Monarch offered his hand to the Monarchs. They took his hand to counter their common enemy, the Rulers.

Just like that, the war between the Seven Rulers and the Nine Monarchs raged on. However, as things dragged on, the shadow army grew larger and larger. Time was on the Shadow Monarch’s side. Thanks to his brilliant performance, it appeared as though victory would go to the Monarchs.

If we suggest that we started with 8 on each side. The idea of 7 and 9 makes sense if one crosses over. But that doesn't account for the capture of one so it should be 7 and 8. Unless we started with 8 vs 9. I tried to reach it again and I still got lost. I'll have to really diagram this stuff out somehow.

Honestly it's nitpicky world building nonsense and it's my biggest and only gripe with this book excepting that I wanted more people to survive but if everyone survived in a world like this. It'd be one of the random Isekai and Isekai-likes I read and find boring.

Wow, Volume 7 of Solo Leveling was such a ride! It was action-packed from start to finish, but what really stood out to me was how much more "human" it felt compared to the manhua. There were all these little emotional moments that didn’t make it into the comic version, and I absolutely loved getting to experience them here.

One of my favorite parts was seeing Jinwoo and Haein grow closer. Their connection felt way more real and obvious in this volume—it’s clear there's something romantic going on, and I’m here for it!

I also really liked how the novel dove deeper into the politics of a world filled with Hunters and magical beasts. It got me thinking about how things might actually play out if this happened in real life. It made everything feel more grounded and realistic, which I wasn't expecting.

Oh, and the banter between Jinwoo and Beru? Hilarious. Beru is just so funny and weirdly adorable—I loved every scene with him.

The big Shadow Monarch reveal hit a little differently here. Honestly, I think the manhua did that part better, just because the visuals really elevated the moment. The novel didn’t go as deep into the backstory there, so it felt like a bit of a missed opportunity.

But the real MVP of this volume? The relationships. Jinwoo’s dynamic with his mom, sister, and even his dad was so much more fleshed out. Those quieter, emotional scenes really added depth and reminded me why I love this series beyond the fights and leveling up. It was actually kind of beautiful.

This book is a mixture of good and perhaps not bad things, but definitely meh things, so it's hard to say whether or not I enjoyed it.

Some of the good things include .

A major issue in this volume is the repetition and the Jinwoo-obsessiveness is raised to ridiculous levels. It's not surprising the story focuses so intensely on him, given the work title (I mean why are you surprised that in the book called "Only I Level Up" (Korean)/"Solo Leveling" (English) that the protagonist is the only character that levels up and has any development of any kind?). It just gets kind of silly. There's no real tension in any of the fights because usually only two things happen: people will get injured/killed until Jinwoo shows up, and/or Jinwoo will save people before they can get injured/killed. The extras have so little personality that it's hard to get attached to them. On the rare occasion people actually get hurt/killed before Jinwoo gets there, he'll get upset and then probably not think about them again (except for Go Gunhee and his father).

The Jinwoo focus is to the point that you feel kind of bad for everyone else in the narrative. We're told about these vast armies of Hunters that stand zero chance up against enemies Jinwoo can deal with single-handedly, and ultimately end on people going "wow, how cool is Jinwoo". It's almost funny at one point because .

The "romance" with Cha Haein is just bad. Like it wasn't good to begin with and it didn't get better, and at this point we're meant to believe Jinwoo likes her, and while he says at much, I don't get why he liked her in the first place, considering how harshly he treats her when she tries to apply to Ahjin. He had way more chemistry with Joohee, and for all that relationship wasn't without its issue and I can't say I'm a fan of it either, it just made a whole lot more sense than Jinwoo and Haein. They're cute together, I guess, but it feels weirdly forced.

I still plan to finish this series because I do want to see how the novel version goes, but if I hadn't already known how the story ends, I'd have dropped it here or before this. And even then, if the manhwa did as close an adaptation of the story ending as it did the rest of the novel, I'm really unexcited. That being said, it is again interesting how much the manhwa shifted around: Song Chiyul being a swordmaster and isn't shown until this volume, but it appears near the beginning of the manhwa (which was kept by the anime). It's a neat way to better explore characters earlier and make them feel like a part of the world.

All in all, it's fine enough as a volume in the book, but I can't say I recommend it. "Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint" and "S-Classes that I Raised" are far better dungeon/level-up Korean webnovels than this, though sadly this is the only one at present with an official English translation (though Yen Press/Ize Press has the license to ORV and said they'd release the novel last July, so what are y'all doing?). Even "Lout of Count's Family" is more enjoyable than this, mostly because while the protagonist is beloved by just about everyone and Super Cool TM, the whole cast gets development and their own narratives, and it's at least starting its English release in September 2024.

5 - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Solo Leveling Volume 7 is the second last instalment in the portal fantasy light novel series by the same name. In this novel we see the epic battle come together that we have been waiting for an it will take Jinwoo and the world to save it.

I continue to love this series and I devoured this series in three days so they all kind of blend. That said here are some bullet point thoughts on this book:

-I loved getting to see a fight with the big baddies of this series. Truly gives Jinwoo a fight on more equal playing field.
-We FINALLY get more answers about the Shadow Monarch and I was living for it.
-Jinwoo tends to always find himself in similar situations in fights and this book delivers that same thing but on a much larger playing field.
-Jinchul gets to shine in this book a bit more and I loved how he stood his ground despite what people expected from him.
- No surprise but Jinwoo continues to grow in power and holy moly!

All in all, this series is so easily digestible and I could not put them down!

Love, Death and Knowledge

Some memorable moments
-Fallout from Chairman Go's death
-Finally seeing Hae-In and Jinwoo go on a date (the fact that an amusement park is now boring was kinda funny especially since the army wanted to go on the rides)
-Monarch vs S rank Thomas Andre again, and then seeing three of them kill Jinwoo
-Finally getting a backstory for the reason for the gates and Jinwoo's power.
-Rematch this time with full power
-Learning what the true purpose of the Gates are, and topling the world view after revealing it.
-Miscalculation leads to destruction of Canada
-A sacrifice about to be made? What is Jinwoo about to do?

Mostly while reading this light novel, I've found myself preferring its visual adaptations - the manhwa and the anime - for the way they bring characters and scenes to life. Sorry to say, but the original writing itself isn't all that impressive.

However, this volume is the first time I think the novel might be better at telling the story. In part, because the short scenes across different countries do a good job at conveying the global impact of the threat posed by the coming Monarchs' armies. And in part, because we inhabit Jinwoo's headspace a bit more as he truly awakens as the Shadow Monarch.

This is JAM PACKED with action and story progression - FINALLY! There are still times I feel that threads are either never revisited or it's closed up so quickly to have been meaningful, but that's been consistent throughout the series. This book in particular though, I felt we finally got a substantial amount of answers and is a solid penultimate book in the series! What I've also had to make peace with is that this series is like Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, etc where the main character is always getting stronger to the point he'll always be OP - but once I've accepted that I could enjoy the story more.

Now, onto the last light novel!

Sigh. Sigh. And another sigh. I am in between joy and despair knowing that only one more book remains in this series. I’m tempted to buy the last book right this moment but also tempted to reread the other 7 book first. Each book I’ve read twice already and own each audio book, this whole series is nothing short of a masterpiece! I don’t want to finish it, I don’t want it to be finished but ( deep sigh ) I have to see it thru.

Up to now I have enjoyed this series. It’s frequently ridiculous but it’s been fun. This book felt more dragged out and very repetitive. The monarchs do not really work as a convincing enemy as all they want is destruction. The back story of this battle being played out again and again doesn’t work with the fun game like elements to the story. I will read the next book but only because it’s the last one.

Oh no - this is finally starting to feel like the end is near of the series and I am not ready for it. Not ready at all especially with how this book ended. I'm so stressed about this - Jinwoo, don't you dare do anything stupid or I will be so made at you!

I really do enjoy these volumes. However, this one felt like it dragged a little and it wasn’t even that long of a book. The battles are feeling a little repetitive in the sense that Jinwoo is OP and no one compares to him. Excited to see how it all ends in the final light novel!

This was oddly paced compared to previous novels. Now that we're getting to the climax of the story it's getting weirdly flat? I'm also starting to get sick of the same beats getting hit over and over again.
