Fumi has finally realized how she feels about Akatsuki―only to be met with a rival for his affections! Sure, she may have shared some tender moments with him, but how is she to compete with Katsura, an adept working woman determined to snag the handsome and inexplicably popular author? Not to mention, Katsura seems to have quite the lead already, being knowledgeable in both Japanese and the Kibikino family history. Still, if Akatsuki is willing to give Fumi a kiss on the forehead (in public!), that means she has a fighting chance…right?
Kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! So much cuteness!!!!!! The tension!!!! Another love interest made her advance, but Akatsuki did not fall into it.... Hoho! Fumi is so cute and yet very sad because of her dilemma, to love or not to love. Fumi's mother had been revealed and we even got a glimpse of young sensei, can be quite a jerk sometimes, but still loving him! He's the best!!!! 5 stars!
The world’s most awkward book signing continues, as Katsura quietly shoves Fumi to the sidelines so she can make time with Akatsuki. Not that Akatsuki has any concept of romance, mind you. But that just might work out in Fumi’s favour.
Boy, I wish there was a word for a series that you’re reading that you don’t necessarily like but is written incredibly well. It would make this review a lot easier since I love a lot of what this story is doing with its characters, but less so vis-a-vis the plot itself.
I get it, I get it, this is designed to cater to a specific fantasy of the hot, mature mysterious guy who you can’t stop crushing on coming around on you. And it sells that premise darn well, make no mistake, I just don’t loooooove it.
Fumi’s characterization is absolutely top-notch. She might be a hard worker, she might be strong-willed, she might be independent, but when it comes to romance she is completely and totally portrayed as the incredibly inexperienced young woman she actually is.
And, as somebody who rises and falls in this volume faster than the Roman Empire on crank, Katsura makes a meal of being a complete and utter misery of a rival, with a deliciously shrewish quality that we don’t see as much any more. She’s so wonderfully easy to shoot daggers at for most of the volume.
I mean, she’s just leaning hard into the ‘run along, little girl’ that I don’t necessarily blame her for having, but she’s just totally ruthless (and a wee bit aggressive about her attacks) and poor Fumi’s heart on her sleeve personality just absorbs the shaming like a sponge.
And that makes sense. Fumi just doesn’t have the experience here and she can’t really hide how she’s feeling and relies on her coping mechanisms from when she was young. It’s a dollop of reality in midst of this scenario.
Akatsuki is certainly trying his best, or whatever he perceives to be his best, with Fumi, even if his obliviousness leads him to cut just as harsh as some of Katsura’s deliberate barbs just through his actions.
I like there interactions a lot - Akatsuki treats Fumi better than even he realizes and he might be consequently realizing that he cares more than he thinks. Fumi, faced with an adult who is actually responsible for a change of pace, is letting her guard down so hard and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that part of Akatsuki’s attractiveness is his reliability.
Plus Fumi’s friends are a lot of fun. It’s the perfect volume if you can get past the older guy and his underage housekeeper fast-tracking their romantic entanglement. I’m more than prepared to eat crow if this pulls it off, but it still reads like cringe to me.
And, yes, I have read and praised other works in a similar vein - My Darling Next Door immediately comes to mind - but those tend to not have the complete power imbalance that this one does. Fumi is leaning hard on Akatsuki and, on one hand, that’s really sweet, but in context it’s… not so much.
That’s definitely one of those ‘me’ things and if you’re able to see beyond it or don’t mind it being in a work of fiction, then you’ll be eating this with a spoon because it is definitely a very well written thing I just can’t get behind completely, yet recognize how darn well constructed it is.
3.5 stars - my opinion on the plot has not changed, my feelings on how good the writing and art are have not either, so I think this is going to get exactly what the last volume got. I won’t be upset to keep reading, but I may be mildly annoyed.
I have a feeling the whole story is going to be one big slow burn in pacing and the romance plot. I'm curious if there will be a 'rival' love interest either in the next volume or soon.
I love the art and I like that Fumi is opening up more.
MUCH better volume than the previous! I felt myself involved and invested in the story, especially emotionally! Fumi's backstory was my favorite part and totally tore at my heartstrings! Also enjoyed seeing Sensei's backstory!
When Fumi was hiding in the closet and thinking about how lonely she was… and then Sensei opens the door, looking for her- Ah, it’s a sweet moment. Definitely a prelude for things to come. Two lonely people are about to fall in love!!!!
This is moving along at a pretty fast clip, which is a bit odd since it apparently closes out in 14 volumes. That's good - I like the idea that their relationship development hopefully won't be too rushed - but I'm also not entirely sure what's going to be covered in another 11 books. It feels like we're already hitting some big Reveals. And that tease of another love interest for Kibikino went absolutely nowhere, hah, poor girl.
I did really enjoy all the emotional upheaval in this one. Fumi goes through a lot!
It's a bit weird that Fumi's friends just didn't show up to the book signing, I guess? That part at the beginning was confusing. It seems like her friend is just going to keep assuming that Fumi is crushing on some dusty old writer who totters around with a cane. Unless I missed something.
We switched from that brief scene to the book signing afterparty, with Katsura cornering Fumi in the bathroom to brag about all the things she knows about Kibikino's life and interests. It cements everything Fumi had already been thinking about: she really doesn't know him at all, and seeing him interacting with an intelligent, highly educated woman closer to his age puts her very imbalanced dynamic with him in stark relief. She's just a girl, like Kibikino always calls her. She doesn't mean anything to him. Why would she? They barely know each other.
Kibikino doesn't help matters by kissing her on the forehead during a drunken party game, then announcing to everyone that it meant nothing. Fumi knew, really, that she didn't actually have a chance at romance with him, but it still hurts to have that kind of thing confirmed. And all her emotions are a lot rawer because she's just a really, really lonely person who's had to hide that from even herself for too many years.
Being around Kibikino is unleashing a lot of those hidden feelings. It's not just that she's crushing on him. She feels happy and safe with him. She feels like she has a home, in a way she hasn't since her mother died and she took over running the household. It's interesting that she claims she doesn't have anything bad to say about her dad, because I certainly do. Maybe he's not a bad guy, but he seems like a pretty terrible father. He left his daughter with too much responsibility, and he left her alone so often she grew to just accept that as a natural course of her life. Except it never actually stopped bothering her.
So when she finally opens up to Kibikino...well, everything comes spilling out. She holds onto his shirt, and she cries, and she tells him she's lonely, that she's always been lonely. In short, she needs him. She doesn't tell him what she'd wanted to: that she didn't want him to leave her alone to go on a date with that beautiful woman (although she doesn't know he'd promptly rejected Katsura). But he gets enough of the picture.
The problem is, once you start feeling things, it's way too hard to stop. You can't shove it all back in the bottle...it won't fit anymore. So Fumi is kind of a mess at this point, and doesn't know how to handle her own emotions or Kibikino's kindness.
And what is he feeling? Well, we're not there quite yet. But we get some initial glimpses of what he was like when he was younger, and hints that he had an unusual family life that stilted some of his ability to show affection to others.
Very glad he's getting more substance, and he really does get more attractive with each volume. Poor Fumi, you're a goner.
Fumi's crush on Kibikino is so earnest, and when she literally grabs his shirt while sobbing and confesses how lonely she is, I truly felt for her. She's been alone and self-reliant since her mom died, but now that she has Kibikino in her life, the facade she worked so hard to create is starting to crumble. In reality she's deeply lonely, and it wasn't until she fell for him that she came to that realization. Or allowed herself to. But honestly, Kibikino's aloofness could also be hiding a deep loneliness as well. These two really do need each other.

Ngl, for the first few chapters, I felt like this series really hasn't done anything to capture my attention. However, I am proud to say that this volume things are really starting to heat up, imo. Frankly speaking, I still feel like her previous work (Daytime Shooting Star) was better, but for now, I'm looking forward to see how things will shape up. :)
Another very entertaining volume in this series. We had a little bit of a jealousy arc with a coworker and some more really cute scenes. I’m really glad to know that this far into the manga they’re still in the getting to know phase and it’s not moving too fast. Sometimes with this type of manga, the falling in love part can feel short. I’m really enjoying the story.
this was supposed to be the volume where I decide if I’m continuing on with the series or not… and I’m still undecided 😒
these volumes are so sparse so the story drags on. I’m honestly not even sure how I feel about the main relationship, but something in me feels invested to find out what happens to them.
A tiny ray of hope breaks open Fumi's cold and lonely planet in the form of Kibiniko sensei. Will poor Fumi back away at the sight of evil Katsura? I hope that Fumi will be brave and persistent for her own feelings.
The close-ups are very nice. Fumi gives in to her emotions easily and cries even when she does not want to be seen by anyone. Part of the title 'Lonely Planet' is explained. Akatsuki is the classic handsome and impassive guy, but he melts.
