DEATH UNDER WRATHFUL SKIES
The Victoria Sedgewick Mysteries
Book 2

BLYTHE BAKER

Review by Author Roy Murry

In the 1820s, Ms. Victoria attempts to be a private inquirer (Detective) after solving the murder of her husband (Book 1). Her advertisement in the local Hyde Park, London paper is attached to an article that piques her attention—a third man is killed in the same manner as the previous three.

Ms. Victoria starts her business (Investigating) by combining efforts with Mr. Keats, a well-known detective hired by the police to find the killer. Included in the conversations are her butler, housekeeper, cook, and the nanny of infant Daniel.

The characters and the story are well-developed, making this mystery series worth reading. I have only read this novel.

With intelligent deduction, Ms. Victoria and Mr. Keats come to the same conclusion about who the killer is: she does it unconventionally, and he uses Ms. Victoria's informational letter delivered the same day she goes into action.

The ending is surprising and dangerous because, after all, Ms. Victoria is a novice.

Good, Quick, and Fun Read. I read in two sittings.

"Death Under Wrathful Skies" is the second installment in the Victoria Sedgewick series. Victoria is learning to deal with her reduced circumstances and is determined to make a go of her fledgling career as an private inquiry agent.
In this episode, Victoria works with Mr. Keats, the agent who had looked into her husband's mysterious death, to solve a series of murders that are alarmingly similar. Bodies are stacking up and clues are in short supply, but Victoria is determined to make a name for herself in the detecting business.
As a character, Victoria is becoming more deliberate in her hunt for clues. She thinks aloud and uses her loyal servants, including Mrs. Bell the Housekeeper and Mr. Warrington the Butler, as sounding boards for her ideas. Both indulge Victoria, but also work to bring her back to the ground.

This story is great for those who enjoy cozy mysteries and historical mysteries.

Good Cozy Mystery!

This is a short story, while it is a cozy mystery, the murders are gruesome. I like this type of mystery, something spooky has happened, a bit of danger involved, yet the person investigating is the focal point of the story, in this case, a young widow with a small child, a nice cast of servants who genuinely cares for the young mother, and baby, that is the cozy part. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it for mystery fans, especially those who like Midsummer Murders, the British Mystery TV show on BrittBox, you would like both.
Thank you.

Better than I was expecting.

This was both a fun story and serious as most murders are. The main character is a lady whose financial setbacks has put her into dire straights. When her husband was murdered, she was partially instrumental in discovering the murderer and felt she might have a career in detecting. In this book she has decided to look into the horrendous murders discovered in Hyde Park. The plot is easily followed, the characters are very interesting, and the story is suspenseful. I definitely recommend this book.

5 STARS, VICTORIAN HISTORICAL MURDERS

Book 2 is a quick paced filled with lots of action storyline of 5 STARS for the Series: The Victoria Sedgwick Mysteries along with a good BLURB. This quick read with great characters is an intelligent & interesting read of choice.

Victoria, has barely survived the first case besides her own husband's but is still determined this is to be her kind of work. It's on to the next case for Victoria & her servants to figure out

I just fell in love with this author, this characters, & this Series.

Main Character Is Hard to Like

I'm trying to like this series, but I don't care for the main character, Victoria. She comes across as a moody, petulant shrew. She's always irritated and while I understand her in-laws have put her in a bind, she never confronts them. Instead, she pouts and snaps at her staff. Victoria is very hard to like.

This book was OK. A couple of years ago I read another book by Blythe Baker which I gave a much higher rating. Even though this was a cozy mystery type of book the story, actions and character verbiage simply felt way too simplistic. Fortunately this was a short book so even though I didn't think it was all that terrific it didn't take long to finish.

Victoria Sedgewick 2

I have enjoyed the first two in this series. Wasn't sure I would since I hadn't cared about a couple of this authors' previous works. Good show! I hope it keeps up. Best of luck.

A conclusion without preamble

The books in this series are short, meaning few details can be developed. However I found this ending disconcerting given the lack of story development. Still, it as an easy way to spend an afternoon.

a good, quick, enjoyable read

Blythe Baker has always written works that captivate me.

And this did that.

There is fine character development of the main character and a plot that ends, sadly, too quickly.

Definitely, four stars.

I can't believe

I have read many of Blithe Baker's books but I missed this series. I read the first one and it was great now this one. I will be reading the book 3. It's probably because this series cost money.

ok read

This is a non-challenging cozy historical mystery. You are given a gentle hint in the direction of the solution but there’s really not a way to come to solution until after Victoria teams with Keats.

I swear I have read these books before

Or maybe it is because “disadvantaged society member meets marginalized detective, murder caught, love ensures” is a common theme in 19th century murder mysteries.

Really enjoy these books on Victoria Sedgwick and the only negative is the constant Americanisms or American spellings which are a annoyance

For a short cozy, this book was a disappointment. Catching the murderer depended on a henchman with extremely distinctive appearance revealing himself. The characters were bland at best.

I was very disappointed by this book. Just as it seemed to be getting interesting after a very slow start, it wrapped up very quickly.
