From internationally bestselling author Daniel Kalla comes a riveting thriller about online body shaming, toxic diet pills, a vulnerable mega-celebrity, and a rapidly rising body count.

When Owen Galloway, the track star son of a prominent US senator, is found dead of an overdose in his bedroom, LAPD Detective Cari Garcia suspects that he’s just another teenager who hid a drug addiction.

In Vancouver, Dr. Julie Rees, an experienced toxicologist, notices a growing number of overdoses among the eating disordered and body builders, and mentions it to her boyfriend, Detective Anson Chen.

Then Rain Flynn, a famous pop star and social media influencer, dies in her Vancouver hotel room showing the same symptoms of a fatally high fever and uncontrollable seizures as Julie’s other ER patients, including the coowner of a wildly popular wellness center with locations in both Vancouver and LA.

After an autopsy confirms that Rain overdosed on illicit diet pills containing a deadly toxin known as DNP—an explosive agent originally used in the trenches of World War I—the media gets hold of the story and runs wild with it. But who’s behind the online marketing and distribution of DNP? And how is the wellness center connected? The daunting challenge of putting the pieces together falls to Detectives Garcia in LA and Chen in Vancouver. Can they solve these crimes before DNP becomes the next viral TikTok challenge?

Thank you Simon & Schuster CA and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. IYKYK, my reviews are always honest.

2.5 rounded down, no longer feeling nice 🙂

Writing: basic | Plot: 5/5 lmao | Ending: 3/5

SYNOPSIS

As deaths caused by a diet pill containing DNP (an explosive) ramp up in LA and Vancouver, the two police forces link up to find the distributor.

MY OPINION

This is a true 2.5. Yes, even with a 5/5 plot. The plot was rather complex, but it stayed toit and didn't jut off into silly season territory (mafia, john wick-esque action, etc). Despite the handful of characters and alternating locations, I never found myself confused with what was going on and where. Also, the fact that Daniel Kalla is an MD made the medical aspects very realistic and informative, which a hoe always appreciates because lots of authors just run off assumptions and vibes these days.

Now, where it wasn't so great was the very bland, basic writing and the abuse of exclamation marks. I love to abuse an exclamation mark (or 10) in my reviews, but in published work, that's a different story. It makes the dialogue cringy and gives me soap opera vibes. I didn't count how many exclamation marks Kalla used, but I'd estimate it was one per scene AT LEAST. Sometimes he was using b2b2b2b exclamation marks which should be a punishable offense tbh.

Next, we have the "all plots, no thoughts" vibe (ffs how many times can I say vibe in this review?). Yes, the plot was well-executed, but it was missing depth and nuance. The relationship drama injected into the story felt like window dressing and it felt like the characters were assigned one emotion each and that's what they rocked with.

Also, this was a story about the toxic culture of influencers and how lethal eating disorders can be, but Kalla failed to really explore this with any depth. It felt like an angle, but not much more. He really could've gotten into the psyche of individuals who take these pills and why, or delved a bit deeper into how the "wellness" industry is really about being skinny at any cost. It felt like he missed an opportunity to really make the reader feel sympathy toward these characters and their struggles. Even Cari's inner monologuing about her sister, Luci, who passed due to her battle with anorexia, felt strangely devoid of any emotion.

Regardless, I can see this working for many people, as I've read similarly written police procedurals that are rated extremely well. I don't have any strong feelings toward this book. It just wasn't a banger. Also the cover is cool but it really has jack shit to do with the book LOL.

PROS AND CONS

Pros: well-executed plot, easy breezy read, medical aspects were informative

Cons: lacked emotional punch, didn't delve deep enough into the psychological aspects of eating disorders or the toxic "wellness culture", yes plot was well-executed but it was just that... a plot and not much else

“How do you think you get noticed in the hypercompetitive, desperately overcrowded world of fitness and health? By playing by the rules?”

In this riveting novel from Vancouver ER doctor and international bestselling author Daniel Kalla, a Vancouver doctor and a detective join forces with counterparts in Los Angeles Police Department to face the deadly consequences of an illicit diet pill that is growing in popularity. They race to track down the supplier that has landed multiple people in Vancouver and L.A. in the ER with critical overdoses.

Kalla shines the spotlight on our society and reveals the dangers of our quick-fix society. His stellar medical suspense opens readers' eyes to the “treacherous phenomenon of body image and eating disorders, which are perpetuated by a toxic weight loss industry and a social media rife with body shaming” and warns readers about a deadly diet pill. Rather than focus on the toll on society, Kalla speaks up for the victims and highlights the criminals who’ve preyed on these susceptible people.

Kalla’s writing is fuelled by his passion as a physician. The drama, conflicts, and daily struggles he witnesses in his career, breathe life into this enlightening and compelling read. His stories always make me appreciate front-line workers and help me foster greater empathy for those who struggle. If you haven’t experienced the caliber of Kalla’s writing, what’s stopping you?

How did we become a nation of impatient and lazy people who are always looking for a quick fix? Why do we not want to wait for anything? Why are we hot on the tracks to attain the perfect body?

Kalla writes to reveal that the endless search for the quick fix is a trap and encourages us to become better informed, more discerning, and willing to find healthier ways to fill our dopamine tank.

Kalla deftly shows us that addiction is not a mere social ill; it’s a disease that involves the individual as well as their family, friends, and community. You’ll be introduced to a track star, Owen Galloway, a famous pop star and social media influencer, Rain Flynn, and co-owners of a popular wellness clinic, Cecilia and Lloyd Hunter. You’ll follow their quest for perfection and see the ripple effects of their choices.

I absolutely love Kalla’s books! In this medical suspense, he invited me inside the emergency room and gave me a glimpse of the challenges doctors/nurses face in triage, how collaboration across multiple departments is necessary, and how the daily battle of racing against time affects frontline workers. It was great to read about local places and get reacquainted with characters Detective Anson Chen (VPD), Dr. Julie Rees (ER doctor and toxicologist with Poison Control) and Dr. Goran Veljkovic (ER doctor) from The Last High and I am looking forward to meeting them again.

As I turned over the last page, I felt convicted to reassess my values on perfection, my responses on social media, and the weight I place on body image/shaming. I was left with the thought-provoking idea: ‘There’s a ton of truth in that old adage that anything worthwhile takes time and effort.’ I certainly have a responsibility to do something, anything.

HIGHLY recommended.

I was gifted this copy by Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Another fantastic read by Daniel Kalla Fit to Die was well researched. I’m happy that the author has brought awareness to an important issues of body shaming and eating disorders the toxic diet industry and banned diet pills that are killing people around the world. I found it engaging from the first chapter, I was happy to see characters from The Last High woven into the story seamlessly..It was a fast paced read that I couldn’t press the turn page button on my e-reader fast enough. It had some plot twists I didn’t see coming and some I did. Highly recommend

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Expected publication date: May 9, 2023

Canadian author Daniel Kalla brings another relevant, intriguing medical thriller to the forefront with his newest novel, “Fit to Die”.

First, a senator’s son is found dead, presumably by an overdose. But when a young up-and-coming Instagram star dies from a similar overdose at a party, the pressure on the police to find the culprit is heavy. Across the border, in Vancouver, similar deaths are occurring; young, fit people, are allegedly overdosing on the drug DNP, and police are convinced there’s a connection to the Los Angeles deaths. But DNP is not a drug at all and was in fact used to make weapons in World War One. So how is it ending up in the hands of the community at large? And why are they ingesting it?

Kalla’s novels are always some of my favourites, not only for their fraught and tense plots but also for their thought-provoking themes. Both “The Last High” and “Lost Immunity” had me on pins and needles throughout, but left me thinking about them for days afterward and “Fit” is no doubt going to leave the same indelible mark.

“Fit to Die” crosses two countries, with police investigators in both Canada (Vancouver) and the United States (Los Angeles) sharing the lead roles in this novel, as well as Julie, an emergency room doctor and toxicology specialist in L.A, ensuring Kalla covers all the angles. Kalla is respectful when he writes about major issues, as has been the trend in his previous novels as well, and “Fit” is no different, covering heavy, emotional topics like drug abuse, body image and eating disorders with complete compassion and class.

This is one of the novels I was able to read for hours at a time without realizing it, and one of those novels that I was sad to finish. Although Kalla tied up all the loose ends and the ending of the novel was satisfying and believable, I didn’t want to stop. Kalla is a medical doctor, but he easily pulls double duty as an author. Not only is “Fit to Die” compulsively readable, but you won’t be able to stop thinking about it. I want more Kalla!!

Contemporary issue in a fast-paced thriller.

What price are you willing to pay to lose weight and be fashionably thin? Are you willing to die to be fit? Detectives in LA and Vancouver are racing to find the supplier of diet pills and supplements that contain DNP -- a weight loss agent that has significant toxicity.

The son of a senator and a social media influencer are found dead due to overdose of the toxin DNP, a deadly chemical that was once used as an explosive agent during WWI. When more body builders and people with eating disorders come to emergency rooms with high fevers and uncontrollable seizures, the hunt is on to find out where those people are getting DNP and to stop the supply chain.

This was another great read by an author who has become a favorite of mine. He always finds an issue that needs to be addressed and I love the medical aspects and details. The characters in this were not really as well developed but the focus was on the drug and its effects as well as shedding light on the difficulties in managing eating disorders. Many people have an obsession with fitness and weight so definitely a timely topic -- and who doesn't want a fast and easy way to shed those extra pounds. Unfortunately, there is no method that works like that, and definitely it's not one that is healthy.

Thank you to the publisher for granting access to this ARC for me to read, review, and recommend. Looking forward to Kalla's next book.

A scintillating blend of medical thriller and police procedural, FIT TO DIE is an explosive story about the perils of attaining the 'perfect' body at all costs. With an enthralling cast of well-developed, relatable characters--victims, villains, and heroes--each fighting their own demons, Daniel Kalla has again created a propulsive suspense, one that raises awareness about a very real, very frightening drug, while also entertaining his captive audience. A true feat that only an author of Kalla's caliber can accomplish.

Fit to Die by Daniel Kalla is a medical thriller about eating disorders and drug overdoses.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Simon & Schuster, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
LAPD Detective Cari Garcia is investigating the death of Owen Galloway, son of a US Senator who is sure it was murder.  Cari thinks it may have been a drug overdose.  Owen was a star track runner who was intent on making his body lean and strong.

Meanwhile in Vancouver, Dr. Julie Rees, a toxicologist, is concerned with the rising death count of overdoses.  When an American star dies in Vancouver of a drug overdose, Julie's boyfriend, Detective Anson Chen and his partner are put in charge of the case.

Apparently the drug of choice right now contains DNP, which was originally used in the the trenches in WWI and the mining industry as an explosive, but has been found (in small doses), to help with weight loss and muscle enhancement.  Unfortunately, DNP can cause seizures, an abnormally high fever, and death.

The three detectives work together to tie the drug to a popular wellness center that has facilities in both Vancouver and LA.  But they discover that may not be the only source of the drug.

My Opinions:
I had never heard of DNP before, and it is downright scary!  I thought Fentanyl was bad....and it is probably worse because it is much more prevalent, but DNP, if it takes off, could be worse.

Basically the book centers around body image and eating disorders, and how the problems are exacerbated by social media and the weight loss industry.  It is just sad.

The book was very straight-forward, and anything medical was explained very well.  I liked the characters, although I could have done without the romance angles, which really did nothing for the book.

Overall, it was a fast, interesting read.

In the latest medical thriller, Fit to Die, by author Daniel Kalla, people are dying to get fit. The story takes place in Los Angeles and Vancouver and opens in LA with the death of the track star son of a prominent State Senator, of an apparent overdose.

In Vancouver, Toxicologist, Dr Julia Rees has noticed a rise in overdoses among body builders and the wellness community. The symptoms are always the same - extremely high fevers and prolonged and violent seizures leading to death. The autopsies reveal the presence of DNP, a substance that should never be found in a human body,

Then a famous pop singer from LA dies in Vancouver after showing the same symptoms. Detectives from both countries must join forces to discover the source of the drug.

I gotta say, Fit to Die is one doozy of a page turner. It delves deeply into issues like eating disorders, body shaming, toxic diet drugs, and the dangers of fitness at any cost. It grabbed my attention and didn’t let go to the satisfying ending. It’s well-written, well-plotted, and smart with interesting characters and plenty of twists and turns to provide me with another sleepless night but it was so worth it.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I'd heard really good things about this medical thriller and it was just kind of an okay read for me. Not really sure what didn't work for me but it was a fast-paced police procedural and it did have an interesting plot.

Fitness social media influencers start turning up dead when they're given drugs with dangerous ingredients. Definitely relevant and scarily plausible but overall I wasn't super invested in the MCs. Okay on audio read by Aven Shore - a new to me narrator.

💫 overall rating: 4/5⭐️s 💫

this one really surprised me and holy did it get extremely chaotic!

💫quotes💫
•”our secret is that we’re both damaged souls.” (186)

💫synopsis💫
follows the police departments/detectives trying to crack the case of these deadly diet pills flooding the internet. These pills are extremely dangerous and people are getting their hands on them way too easily. The book jumps from 3+ povs from the detectives and other main characters/witnesses and you get each side of their story and their motives regarding the pills. Extremely gripping and you watch more and more people slowly just drop like flies left right and centre.

💫 pros 💫
•it hooked me from the very jump. I couldn’t put it down for the first half of the book.
•super super short chapters though which just made me keep saying “one more chapter” everytime!
•the plot was very unique and kind of scary because I wouldn’t be surprised if something like this happens in real life.
•it was really cool how the author made us readers feel like we were an actual detective in the book trying to solve this crime with them
•the length of the book was really good, I felt like it didn’t drag on longer than it needed to.
•The end twist was pretty good, I can't lie!

💫cons💫
•I’m not a doctor so a lot of the supplements, medicines, drugs, terms, etc. did not make sense to me but I just rolled with it
•I had a really hard time following the povs in this though because it switches between at least 3 different main characters so it was pretty confusing

💫overall💫
•the plot was just so intense and intriguing, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would for sure! I would love to check out more books from this author some time soon.

Edge of your seat medical thriller. My favourite genre of thrillers! High end wellness centre selling drinks laced with DNP, or an explosive. Loved the settings, LA, Vancouver. Great characters! Overall fun read. Thanks to NetGalley, publishers and author for the arc of this book.

This was a fun read but in a horrifying way! People have been popping up dead after taking DNP, originally used in war and an explosive, to try and lose weight. Now it’s up to detective Cari and Julie, a poison control expert and Dr, to find out how people are getting these tablets and put an end to it being sold. The FDA has banned these for consumption but somehow people are still getting their hands on them. Too many people.

Lots of triggers: eating disorders, ODs, death, body image, diet culture

While a fiction thriller this book covers a lot of real-life issues that people face daily. Our culture and its obsession with looks and weight - though we claim has gotten better - is still a major issue. The story tackles some of these issues but also does it in a fun way. It’s a book of the times for sure.

You’ll fly through this one, it’s impossible to put down.

Enjoyed this one!

Fit To Die is an easy book to swallow and engrossingly addictive!!

In world full of Vanity and the chase for secret weight loss , this novel was so relatable and on a personal level for me .With a spouse who is a true diabetic prescribed Ozempic and then friends who are "Chasing the Kardashian Diet" and using Ozempic for weight loss only ( which infuriates me )to see the abuse and lies that come with it , I was SO curious how a writer could turn this into a mystery suspense novel?

Well Daniel NAILED IT!!

If your into crime , then you will love this book.
I felt I was truly reading a true -crime novel. It is so fast paced , short chapters and had a plot twist ending I did NOT see coming .

In a world full of diet pills ,everyone is chasing the next best fix, and it seems L.A and Vancouver have the right "Mix" ...until famous Rain over doses on the new fad DNP , not only does it shed weight, it will literally put you 6 feet under if one was to become selfish and consume too much.

It quickly becomes evident that there is a plethora of body counts adding up between the two cities and they all have one thing in common... DNP!! But how are they getting this lethal toxic diet pill, and if the LAPD and VPD don't act quickly they will have an epidemic on there hands which equals a lot of deaths!!

The author dives right in and between the characters in the novel , he writes in away that is informative without losing the reader, which makes it so more like non-fiction than fiction. Daniels background in the medical field plays a key role in making this novel such a success and a must read page turner full of addiction at a thrilling pace and a great plot twist which surprised me .

Thank you Daniel for bringing light a topic that is very present in todays world and giving me a great compulsive read , your a brilliant writer !!

An ER Doctor/Toxicologist and detectives in LA and Vancouver join forces to track down the supplier of a deadly diet pill that has suddenly taken numerous lives in both countries.

While the suspense is fast paced and engaging, it’s also terrifying. I had never heard of the toxic drug DNP (a deadly chemical used as an explosive agent during WWI) until reading this. It’s astounding to know that it’s being distributed as a diet pill for human consumption. This story also sheds light on body image, eating disorders, addiction and society’s obsession with quick-fix weight loss .

Kalla’s medical expertise and ability to write deep, emotional topics makes this such a compelling read. The twists and the adrenaline rush it gave me > 🙌🏽😅 I binged Fit to Die in a little over 24 hours (in my downtime in the ER. 🤫) and could’ve easily read more. The short chapters - BLESS.

If you love medical dramas and police procedurals, you’ll really enjoy this story! I definitely plan on reading more of his work!

This novel was just overall pretty underwhelming. The mystery didn't grab me. The police procedural was slower than I expected. The medical storyline was well written so that was nice. But really I wasn't not drawn to this book. I kept reading for a bit more of an interesting turn but it just didn't resonate with me.

This is the first novel written by Daniel Kalla that I have read. While I found the story interesting and entertaining, it did not have any of the twists or wow moments that I look forward to in thriller novels. Even though the storyline occurs over Canada and the United States with 2 sets of detectives vying to solve the case, the plot does not become cumbersome and is easy to follow. The topic is relevant at this time and Daniel Kalla has researched it thoroughly bringing an informative view of a topic that is now at the forefront in the news. All in all an entertaining medical thriller well worth the read!

Book Review
Fit to Die by Daniel Kalla

⚠️Triggers⚠️
Bulimia/anorexia
Body dysmorphia
Drug abuse

Characters
Too many to count - but I did- over 30 names….
I appreciate there were “epidemic” numbers of deaths but did I really need the names of every single lab tech, cop, current and past boyfriend/girlfriend, and coffee barista? I struggled to connect with the characters- even the MC’s - I needed a bit more complexity and depth to their narratives I think.

Exceptional medical realism (as expected from an ER Doctor). The hospital scenes were so accurate they added another layer of urgency to the narrative. Kalla excels at this.

Overall a solid read but not my favourite from this author. I look forward to continuing to read from his backlist.

Thank you to @simonandschuster and @netgalley for my digital ARC in return for an honest review. Opinions expressed are my own.

This one was okay, but I did find it a bit underwhelming. The idea had promise, but it didn’t feel like it lived up to its full potential. I may have enjoyed it more if it focused more on the details of the plot and less on the cop characters investigating the situation. Ultimately, I thought it was okay but not great.

After several deaths are related to diet pills containing DNP, an explosive agent originally used in world war 1.
LA and Vancouver police along with an experienced toxicologist, join forces to find out who is behind the online marketing and distribution of the pills targeting the body builders and people with ED.

WHAT I LIKED:
-Multiple POVs were easy to follow.
-Medical/Crime mystery.
-The author, being an actual doctor, made the medical scenes feel very real.
-Authors note providing more information.
-fast-paced and easy to read.
-if Grey's Anatomy did a crossover with a crime show vibes.

WHAT I DIDNT LIKE:
-the ending was too underwhelming.
-I wanted more of a story into the villain. I needed more on why and what drove them. They fell flat as a character for me. It seemed like they and their character development were an afterthought to the story.
-predictable in some parts.

A Medical Thriller

I have been a huge fan of this author since his first interview on TV many many years ago and to this day I am still loyal and wouldn’t miss out on any new release. This latest is about celebrity, online body shaming, toxic diet pills and addiction. “Fit to Die” tells the stories of 3 individuals found dead from a drug overdose.

In a few words:

The story brings us to LA and Vancouver with patients showing same symptoms high fewer, seizures and organ failure.

First, was the son of a prominent U.S. senator found dead in his bedroom, and then a famous pop star and social media influence in her hotel room and finally the story bring us to the co-owner of a Wellness clinic whose fate was the same. All three autopsies show a high level of DNP in their blood.

Dry. Rees, a toxicologist, notices a growing number of overdoses among the eating disordered and body builders. Inquisitive she gets her boyfriend Detective Anson Chen to see if similar cases came his way. In mean time, LA Detective Cari Garcia tracks down the sources of the drug and the illegal distributors. Pooling their efforts, together the two Detectives must find and eliminate this deadly drug and those behind it.

My thoughts:

This is an entertaining medical and police procedural in a theme tragically too real. Writing with a lot of medical jargon but it is easy to follow, most of all quite interesting. The chapters are short and move along quickly in a narration that flows smoothly. The story is said from the perspective of both police detectives and the toxicologist in an active and clean language. Of course to keep us on our toes and captivated we find a few plot twists to derail us. This is another page-turner hard to put down played out by well-rounded characters.

Well said and done.

I received this arc from Simon & Schuster via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

Content Warning: Drug use, body shaming, eating disorders

People are dying to get fit, literally dying. Deadly diet pills, mixed with unscrupulous duplicitous "wellness" centre owners makes for a dangerous combination. Preying on people's desires to be fit and people with body image issues, this book tells a tale of the lengths people will go to attain that perfect body. It's not really a tale is it though? It's a reality for some regardless of the dangers known and unknown.

We are re-introduced to Dr. Julie Rees and her boyfriend Detective Anson Chen (who we met in The Last High) are once again on the trail trying to determine where these toxic pills are coming from.
It's always thrilling reading Daniel Kalla's books, we get a real look at what he sees coming through the doors of the ER hospital in Vancouver. His books might be fiction but they're steeped in reality and who better to tell the stories than a doctor.

I loved the twists and turns and the final double-cross was perfect. I stayed up till 2am to finish it, I just couldn't put it down. If you like medical thrillers I highly recommend this one.

In Daniel Kalla's new medical thriller Fit To Die, it appears drug addiction is to blame for multiple mysterious deaths in both Los Angeles and Vancouver, but is this actually the case?

This is a thriller I've known about shortly after reading Kalla's The Darkness In The Light last year, and although I was excited to read this one, I procrastinated because I just didn't think I was going to like it as much as the last one - but boy, was I wrong!

The short chapters in this novel propel the momentum ahead at lightening speed, not to mention just how addictive this book is!

With police departments on either side of the US/Canada border working together to bring needed justice, I loved seeing how the two jurisdictions had differences in their policies and terminologies. There were a few clichéd jabs at each other, which added a bit of humour to an otherwise dark book as well.

I am still shocked at how well Kalla writes! There are a lot of characters, and a lot of medical information in this story, but it is written in such an easy and approachable way; this is exactly what really blew me away with The Darkness In The Light as well.

A thriller that makes you question influencers and targeted ads, the beauty and health industry, and just how much stock we put into our own image - this is one that makes you think.

A string of deaths of young, healthy people, including the athlete son of a US senator and a pop star/influencer, spurs a joint investigation by Canadian detective Anson Chen and his US counterpart Cari Garcia. The victims are dying with the same symptoms - extremely high fever and uncontrollable seizures leading to brain death. The common factor is a toxic substance called DNP which was never intended for human consumption but is now being marketed on the dark web as a weight loss miracle drug. Can the combined talents of Garcia and Chen, along with medical input from toxicologist Dr. Julie Rees, stop the spread of DNP and put an end to the carnage?

I always find Kalla's novels, with a blend of medical insight and detective work, an entertaining read. This one is no different - with quickly moving action, decent dialogue, and a few little plot twists to keep you on your toes. The one criticism I would make is that I think he could do more with the setting and creating a unique sense of place in this series. It is a picture perfect setting on the west coast and I feel he could do more with that. Otherwise this is a reliably entertaining book in this medical/detective series. A new diet pill seems to be circling around North America which normally wouldn’t raise the authorities attention. That is, until it’s uncovered that the diet pills contain DNP, an explosive which isn’t safe for human consumption. As the death tolls continue to rise, investigators in Vancouver and Los Angeles work together to get to the bottom of it.

Fit to Die is an entertaining and interesting medical thriller. The story is told via short chapters with alternating POVs; it's fast paced and a quick read. I was fascinated by how realistic the characters; the plot and the twists and turns were. The author combined his medical knowledge with suspense and great police procedural in such a tasteful way. At times, I found it hard to read due to the level of detail he provides in a medical sense. That didn’t stop me from tearing through this book because it was so good!

This was a very interesting read I would best describe as a Medical Mystery Thriller. I had some Criminal Minds/CSI vibes reading the book which is definitely not a bad thing! These are the kind of TV shows which give me life!

The novel hits the topic of body/fat shaming, how social media can negatively influence people’s perspectives, the fact people are looking for the ultimate easy weight loss fix and an underground black market selling deadly diet pills for profit.

After a string of deaths, including the son of a Senator and a famous pop star, the cause of death is found to be a deadly toxin called DNP. As the investigation is underway, the DNP is found linked to diet pills and drinks. Tracking down where they are manufactured and who is distributing them becomes the focus.

I was a little wary when I began the book because there are quite a few characters, each with their own POV. There did not seem to be a “main” character but rather, a lot of people who were invested in the same case, who were either affected by the loss of someone to DNP or who were behind the supply of DNP. There were a lot of players to get to know which took place in two different cities – Vancouver and Los Angeles. { I, personally, love a book written in a Canadian setting}

After I figured out the who is who, the storyline I found fascinating. I was shocked when I read the Author’s Notes at the end of the book to find out DNP really is a product in illicit diet pills and being distributed in our society. The book wasn’t necessarily a fast paced read full of action but rather, a good steady flow of characters and information which held my attention. It touched on the personal lives of the main characters but not enough for me to really get to know them to feel anything for them. The focus was on the crime and getting the people behind it to do the time. ( bahaha cheesy rhyme I know lol)

Four solid stars, would recommend when you are in the mood for a medical mystery. Watch for it – publication date May 9, 2023.

This book was so incredibly well researched and after reading the note from the author, I appreciate them so much for trying to bring to light a very real and scary epidemic of toxic drugs being used for weight loss. The science, medical terms and technical information was really well explained that without any medical training I was able to understand the ramifications of taking the drug.

The multiple POV were really difficult for me in the beginning chapters. We are with multiple characters in different locations and I honestly had to write a note of who was where and doing what in order to try and keep it straight. A title heading with the name of who was narrating and their location would have made this book immensely more enjoyable in the sense that I wouldn't have had to waste time figuring out that small detail. Perhaps this was in an effort to allow the reader to experience the same confusion and frustration as the characters themselves? I felt that it took me out of the story too many times.

I did enjoy the look into the private lives of our characters, details that had really nothing to do with the overall plot of the book, but helped to humanize our narrators so it wasn't all just facts and figures.

Overall, it was a good mystery story about an important issue. I would highly advise adding trigger warnings to anyone who has/is dealing with eating disorders or body dismorphia - even myself with no issues felt a little self conscious about my pants size while reading about all the uber thin and glamorous people.
