I really like Ant and Bea
And for some reason I totally enjoy the supermarket setting
But I thought the case in the first book was way more interesting
Will definitely continue with the series

A light crime story set in contemporary England, with amateur investigators. Not normally my sort of reading but I enjoyed it. It’s backdrop is the routine English life of people who ‘just get by’ in life; just coping from pay check to pay check, no advantages in life, TV dinners with many evenings spent quietly at home, difficult family circumstances for some, etc., but exciting social activities, maybe romance, too.

Doesn't sound like the high drama or fantastical scenarios I often go for in fiction but I liked how well the ‘ordinariness’ of the lives is presented, on top of which the drama of an investigation of local criminality is added.
The lead characters, Bea and Ant(thony) are supermarket workers on low pay with long hours and complicated domestic circumstances. They stumble upon a mystery involving missing cats in the locality, which escalates to confrontations with threatening neighbourhood thugs and eventually leads to a dramatic, unexpected and dangerous climax. A very well constructed, intriguing, plot in my opinion.

I’m working my way through this series which my wife bought some time ago (I’d read #1 in this series a couple of years ago; this is #2) and I see it’s now been re-issued by publishers with new book titles. For example, this book is now “The Missing Pets Mystery”, as part of the ‘Supermarket Mysteries’ series.

I think this reissue follows in the wake of the success of the Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman, involving amateur detectives at a retirement complex, and associated with a (new to me) ‘cozy crime’ labelled genre! I’d read the first in the Osman series a while ago and thought it a reasonable story but my belief is that it only became a major best seller because of the heavy publicity by the publishers and the author being a TV personality in the UK (an intelligent and humorous one, admittedly).

Personally, I found the characterisations and scenarios in this ‘Ant and Bea’ book far more believable and appealing than in the Thursday Murder Club book. It’s also far from ‘cozy’ - although we’re not talking serious gangland crime this story has enough realistic threat and violence to make things very tense on occasion.

So I’ll stick with this series when I feel the need to read some light crime fiction rather than the Osman series. Plus side of 4*.
Incidentally, the author is a near neighbour (the reason we originally came across these books from local publicity of her previous award winning children’s stories) but not someone I know closely and not the reason I’m recommending them!

This book was received from the publisher in return for an honest review

Last year I was involved in The Cost of Living blog tour and rather fell in love with Ant and Bea so when I discovered their adventures were continuing with a second book I was so excited, Dead Stock immediately made my list of November releases I was looking forward to! Then Ceris from Sandstone Press got in touch and asked if I’d like to be involved in the blog tour for Dead Stock and I jumped at the chance, I just couldn’t wait to catch up with Ant and Bea again, so I’m incredibly happy to be sharing my Dead Stock review today, on publication day!

A new year is beginning for Ant and Bea at Costsave, and after the events of the year before this includes a new manager at the supermarket. Following the events that shook Kingsleigh the year before you might think Ant and Bea would be hoping for a nice quiet new year. Unfortunately when Ant finds the body of a cat in the cardboard recycling bin, Bea realises that the cat belongs to one of their coworkers, promising to find out who is responsible Bea brings herself and Ant into something bigger then she had imagined.

I really enjoyed the plot, I felt that Dead Stock was very well paced, with enough twists that every time I thought I’d worked it out something would happen and I’d have to rethink! The Ant and Bea mysteries definitely sit towards the cosy crime end of the spectrum, you won’t find incredibly grim descriptions of murder scenes or toughened old detective inspectors who may stray across the line every now and then but don’t allow that to lull you into a false sense of security more than once I was eagerly turning the pages and hoping that Rachel hadn’t done anything too drastic! I haven’t been so worried about a golden retriever called Goldie since my grandma’s mistook pond-weed for grass and disappeared under the surface at the local park when I was small! No spoilers though, you’ll just have to read Dead Stock to find out what’s actually happened to those cats…

As much as I enjoy the plots of the Ant and Bea mysteries (and I really do!) so much of the enjoyment I got from reading The Cost of Living came from the characters and Dead Stock is no different, Ant and Bea are just so likeable and I really do have a soft spot for them.

For me Ant is a bit of a star in Dead Stock, stepping up to take first aid training when nobody else wants to he soon finds himself saving a customer’s life. At the same time Ant is really struggling with his home life, his father does something he really shouldn’t have, and Ant’s family are left facing the consequences. Ant in particular has to deal with a lot that I won’t go into because spoilers but I spent an awful lot of the book wanting to give him a big hug, despite everything he was still there for Bea.

Bea herself, you just can’t help but like her, she’s forever trying to help others, whether it’s her mum, a colleague or one of her regular customers. She’s incredibly intelligent and determined, which is a combination that occasionally leads to trouble, but as much as you might want to tell her to stop and call the police instead that would make for a very short book! I was also really pleased to see Queenie making so many positive steps throughout Dead Stock, never underestimate the power of a dog!

I do think it’s a huge testament to Rachel Ward’s writing that even after just a single book I was already so invested in Ant and Bea’s characters, from wanting to give Ant and hug to wanting to give Bea a bit of a shake at times, I mean come on Bea Tom is really not worth it! I have to say it’s not even just the central characters either, as I said before I really loved seeing Queenie’s improvement in this book, I really enjoy reading about Dot, and I find myself worrying about Julie, one of Bea’s regulars. It’s so easy to just submerge yourself into their whole world.

Would I Recommend?
I’m not sure I can recommend the Ant and Bea mysteries highly enough, Dead Stock is perfectly readable as a stand alone but I would suggest reading The Cost of Living first to really enjoy it to the fullest! Rachel has created some wonderful characters who are just an absolute pleasure to read, perfect for all those who love cosy crime but also for those who normally enjoy their crime at the dark and gritty end of the spectrum but are looking for a little break!

I was lucky enough to meet Rachel at an event in Edinburgh at the beginning of the week and to discover she’s working on the next Ant and Bea mystery, I simply cannot wait to discover what the pair get up to next!

I loved this so much! I was a huge fan of the first Ant and Bea book, The Cost of Living, and Rachel Ward has done a fab job with the sequel. Her characters are so real - I'm still concerned about a peripheral character who took a turn in Costsave early in the story! As for Ant and Bea, they continue to show so much depth and development. I can't wait to see what awaits them in book 3 and I've been daydreaming about who would play them if it were ever televised (it would make such good tv - somewhere between the cosy familiarity of a soap and the white knuckle ride of a detective drama) I only wish the author could write as fast as I can read!

I have just read the two books in this series and would love to know if there is to be another. I thoroughly enjoyed both books. I found them very interesting and loved the use of an 'ordinary' person. I shall be delighted if there are too be more as I have become quite invested in the characters and really, really want to know if Queenie conquers her agrophobia!!

I got so invested in Ant&Bea adventure that I had to read the second book immediately. Loved the storyline (not sure I can you say it talking about horrible things that are taking place in the book) and the twists, and loved complex multi-dimensional characters. Will probably have to read the third book now!

Yet another gripping read by Rachel Ward. With a strong female read this series is inspiring, exciting and intoxicating. I have never read anything with so much realism, compassion and dialogue. Animal cruelty is at the forefront but so much more is involved in this plot twisting, interesting and thought provoking mystery.

Love these books.

Must recommend these books, great characters and storylines, funny, sad, entertaining and keep you reading. What more can I say? One complaint though, how fast can they be written? Want more, thank you!

This is a fun series following Bea & Ant and their crime solving.
All the characters from the first book return. Dean & Tank, Dean’s mum Eileen, Tom & Shaz the police officers. Julie, her children and her dodgy husband Dave.

Dead Stock is the second book to feature Rachel Ward's unlikely crime-fighting duo Ant and Bea. The first was The Cost of Living which I really enjoyed and recommend you read to get some background but it's not essential - this reads just fine as a standalone novel.

Dead Stock (which is a bit of a pun as you'll see when you read the book) sees Ant and Bea investigating the disappearance and killing of many cats in their neighbourhood. As they gather up the clues, the finger of blame seems to be pointing at an ex-employee of the supermarket where they both work, a disgruntled ex-employee who already has it in for Bea. The more involved they get, the more dangerous it seems to be as they discover some rather disturbing goings-on.

I spent a fair bit of this book thinking "Don't do that Bea, tell the police Bea, this is getting dangerous Bea!". I'm not sure she would have listened to me though because Bea is one determined young lady with a strong sense of fairness and what is right. She is one of these people who always wants to help, whether that's her friends, her family, her colleagues or even her customers. I really enjoyed the dynamics of the supermarket, how the staff interacted, the changes the new boss was trying to bring in, the relationship between the staff and their regular customers. There is also a hint of romance in the air for Bea. In fact, I would say there was more than a hint with a few people realising just what a special person she is. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

I really felt for Ant in this book. He has had such a difficult home life which, if anything, gets even more difficult for him in this book. Despite everything life throws at him, he is one of the good guys and given the opportunity, he has the potential to do so well in life. I love the friendship between him and Bea and the way she always has his back, the way they support each other. Ant uses some recently acquired skills to great effect in this book and Bea can see that he could go far. I'm sure with her encouragement and support, he could indeed make the most of his potential.

At one point in the book, Ant describes Bea as a "mild-mannered checkout girl by day, crime-fighting superhero by night". I think that gives a flavour of what the book is like. Yes there are some rather nasty crimes, some dangerous criminals, some tricky situations, but at the same time there's a lightness to the story, and humour too. I thoroughly enjoyed spending my weekend with Ant and Bea and can't wait to read about their next adventure which I believe will be out soon!

A really good follow up novel which continued to include the same level of realism to its characters and writing style in comparison to the first novel.

I also enjoyed the plot of the novel which included two different issues being addressed and then them coming together in the climax of the book. This is very typical in mystery novels however I think it was done nicely with well written build up to the conclusions of the two different plotlines. One thing I wanted more from the first novel was mystery and investigation from the characters and I felt like this book definitely included those aspects.

The story is slow paced similar to the first novel which is something I do not mind however I did feel like the ending was rushed and a bit abrupt. Also, although I like Bea as a character and as the perspective we see in the book, I expected more POV chapters from Ant, there was very little chapters in his view and the chapters that were there added very little to the story. I feel like there was opportunity for more of the story to be heard from his perspectives and not just focused on his love life.

4/5

Loved, loved, loved the second book in the Ant & Bea mystery series, Dead Stock, by Rachel Ward! It’s my favourite cosy crime series and I love all the characters even more in this new book. This time, Bea and Ant are investigating a string of cat deaths in their small hometown. I loved following the characters in their investigations and personal lives. There is a lot of warmth and charm in this series, can’t recommend it enough!
