I feel this is a very good activity book for the kids to understand and get into some active learning about race and colour.

The activities given are practical and easy enough for all ages. For each art activity, the materials required and the steps to be followed are explained well, the reasons why they are important are given with each project. This is so satisfying to read and learn. I feel the one adult guiding the kid with this book would also feel the same.

The kids will not feel overwhelmed as the content is quite simple yet the projects included reflect the work of their same age. I truly appreciate this.

Lots to learn from this book. Keep this one at home and at school. Anyone who opens up this book will get the most out of it.

Thank you, Quarry Books, for the advance reading copy.

Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids
3.5 Stars

The Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids is packed with educational art ideas one can share with your children or in a classroom.

This book covers the important points of the Anti-Racist movement through Art. It is a great read for educators, or an excellent choice for libraries for those parents' homeschooling. Each project is broken down into easily digestible sections.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and learned something new. This is a book I'd gladly check out from the library. This isn't a book I'd do each and every project in. Rather, I'd pick a handful of my favourite projects to do with my children. That said, if I were a teacher or librarian, I'd want this book on my bookshelf. It's a fabulous resource with good information!

I love this book and the idea behind it. The art projects go from very simple to more complex with step by step illustrations. A project can be as simple as a persons name and adding things that interest them like sports, foods etc. Drawing a map of your neighborhood to learn about community. There are simple definitions for words like race, racism, culture, identity, community etc. I will be sure share this with my schools art teacher before my temporary ARC expires. Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group, Quarry and Netgalley, I am leaving a voluntary review.

When I first saw Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids: 30+ Creative Projects That Celebrate Diversity and Inspire Change, I was very excited. As part of my teaching load, I am required to teach art, and as a non-artist, I hate it. Also, I am actively involved in many social justice groups, as well as many committees that are committed to equity. So, this book felt made for me.

The book is visually stunning (as one would hope that an book dedicated to art would be). Images are vibrant, and pages are colourful. The activities are divided into sections like “Identity” and “Activism” and “Empathy,” with related art activities that emphasize a specific theme. Some of the activities were more complicated than I thought would be appropriate to young children (which is apparently the target market), and some were a bit of a stretch in terms of their relevance to social justice. A nice book, but probably one that I would take out from the library instead of purchase.

Thanks to NetGalley, the authors, and the publisher: I was provided with an electronic advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids: 30+ Creative Projects That Celebrate Diversity and Inspire Change will be published on May 30, 2023.

As an elementary gifted teacher, I am constantly on the lookout for resources that not only stimulate the creative minds of my students but also instill in them a sense of social responsibility. "Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids" has proven to be a gem in this regard, providing a rich tapestry of colorful, engaging activities that seamlessly weave together art education and the crucial themes of anti-racism.

The book's strength lies in its ability to convey complex topics in a manner accessible to all teachers. Each activity is accompanied by easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions adorned with vibrant images, making it visually appealing and easy to navigate. The inventive activities allow students to explore their own identities while appreciating the diversity around them.

Each chapter focuses on an overarching theme of anti-racism, including identity, culture, community, empathy, justice, and activism. This structure not only serves as a comprehensive guide for educators but also facilitates a seamless integration of these important themes into the classroom setting. The introductory overview of each theme provides educators with a solid foundation, equipping them to navigate discussions with students of varying ages.

What sets this book apart is its commitment to fostering perspective, community, and self-reflection. The activities are opportunities for students to engage in meaningful dialogue about social issues. The inclusion of a "why this matters" section for each activity reinforces the purpose behind each creative endeavor and ensures that the overarching themes remain at the forefront of the students' minds.

The book's initial sections gently guide educators through explanations of race and anti-racism, offering valuable insights for those navigating these conversations in the classroom. Additionally, the guidance on how to use the book effectively in an educational setting is a welcome feature, making it accessible for teachers of various backgrounds and experiences.

As an elementary gifted teacher, I appreciate the adaptability of these activities. The book not only serves as an effective guide for teaching art techniques but also celebrates self and community. It encourages students to recognize their gifts and talents as tools for positive change, fostering a sense of responsibility to others.

"Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids" has proven to be a valuable resource that transcends traditional art education. It empowers young minds to explore their creativity while fostering a deep understanding of anti-racist principles. This book is not just a guide; it is a celebration of diversity, self-expression, and our shared responsibility to create a more inclusive world. Highly recommended for educators seeking to inspire both artistic expression and social consciousness in their students.

This is a really thorough and powerful intro to anti-racism for kids, using art projects to drive the ideas home. I really like the informational sections at the beginning of each chapter, which give insight into anti-racism and how to embody it and apply empathy and understanding and equity and activism in all aspects of one's life.

This is not the kind of book where I would go through each project but rather pick and choose ones to do with my kid. The beginning information of each section, however, should not be skipped. In fact I would probably go through it chapter by chapter, choosing one or two projects from each chapter and working through them in order. That would probably make the most sense.

This is a great resource for classrooms and libraries to help bring home the lessons of anti-racism in a way kids can understand.

This art book is designed for kids to use it independently, and for teachers, parents, and librarians to draw ideas from it. The authors share different thoughts about racism, identity, and culture, and they introduce different art projects that explore related concepts. For example, one of the early projects involves children writing their names on a piece of paper and making a collage with images from magazines or the Internet that reflect their background, personality, and interests. Another is a self-portrait, with ideas for representing your hair texture in art.

Every project includes an attractive example photo, a description of the necessary supplies, and clear instructions. The book has a really nice layout and is easy to read, and although the examples mainly emphasize the African American experience, the assignments are appropriate for people of all backgrounds and cultures. One of the example projects includes images of a nesting doll and other Eastern European art, and the book can help white children explore their national or ethnic heritage instead of this book being primarily or only for children of color.

The projects vary in difficulty, and I wish that the authors had included difficulty ratings and time estimates on the assignments, as many other books do. A difficulty index could also be helpful for kids to pace themselves and for adults to select projects that are most appropriate for the kids they'll be instructing.

Many of the insights here about race and culture are basic and universal enough that they aren't controversial, but the book is very heavy-handed. The authors often frame opinions as objective facts, and they expect kids to take their statements on faith without explaining why they believe they are true. At times, this book is a very basic introduction to key concepts about diversity and cultural celebration. Other times, it's inculcating kids with a political creed and making it sound like everything said is universal truth. When this gets more political, there's no acknowledgement that many people who care deeply about racism think about things differently or have other strategies.

People who agree with the authors will obviously like this book. People who agree with them on some things and disagree with them on others can use this book as a more nuanced talking point with their kids, and if they decide that their kid is too young for the book as a whole, they can still use it as a reference to introduce different crafts.

The Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids book is jam packed with art ideas you and your children will adore.

The beginning of this book covers the important points of The Anti-Racist movement and how Art is an important part of this. Without giving too much away, its an excellent read for every educator in how to help all children in your creative space.

The projects are broken down into easily digestible sections that would be great for more independent children to follow along with. This book is perfect for all school aged children and every adult.

I was gifted a digital copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The message is one that I love. I believe that people would be able to live more in harmony if they did the suggested activities with children. The activities challenge the assumptions of racial stereotypes and recognize the idea of becoming aware of what makes us different culturally. It encourages the exploration of culture and makes children of what racism is.

Racism violates your feeling of safety. We all need to be aware of the cruelty and be empowered to challenge it whenever we see it. I hope that all art teachers who decide to use this book for activities have the full support of the school system and the community. In today's environment, that is not true everywhere.

This is an in depth look at lots of topics around anti-racism like justice, community, activism and culture. It explains each topic and then devotes a number of projects around the topic. The book felt pretty heavy handed to me and I didn’t feel particularly inspired by many of the crafts (one exception is I love the idea of making art postcards about important issues to send to politicians) but it’s an important topic and the book will be a good resource.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book via NetGalley.

Really good reference book for teachers/people who work with kids

The only slight negative is that there's no index of difficulty/ease, which would make it easier to decide on an activity, but if you had the physical book you could easily post-it the pages relevant to the group you work with!

Lots of really lovely clear instructions and extra info for those new to that style of artwork or anti-racist work

I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley, on the expectation that I would provide an honest review.

I LOVE this collection of art activities! They are collected by identity, culture, community, empathy, justice, and activism. Each activity has a short blurb explaining why it's important for the artist to learn. The activities appear to be adaptable for a range of ages. The back of the book contains helpful art references and a glossary.

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

Fantastic reference book! While it's written with children in mind, it's also a great starting point for art activities in general, and it's helped me brainstorm craftivism / art advocacy efforts for my graduate and undergraduate students. I also thoroughly appreciate the glossary and introductions / motivating explanations for each of the chapters. While I first read this as an e-book on Libby, I will absolutely purchase my own copy.
