What happens if you fall in love in a world where love is forbidden?
Yesterday, Laida was Ardenis’s friend. Today, she’s the love of his life. And he can’t tell her.
Ardenis’s human emotions weren’t meant to awaken prematurely. Watchers are supposed to resist the charm of mortals’ magical kingdoms and court intrigue. The punishment is exile—denying him the beauty of a mortal life. He can’t get caught, and he can’t risk awakening Laida’s emotions. While she remains oblivious, he is in torment, struggling to find his new place in the world alone.
But love cannot exist without hate. Yesterday, the council could do no wrong. Today, Ardenis sees corruption among them—something he never would have recognized before. Someone is plotting to prevent the first-ever fae from being born.
If Ardenis can’t uncover the source of the corruption while hiding his human emotions, the realm’s ability to provide souls to the mortal world will be destroyed. Everyone, including Laida, is at risk.

꒰🤍꒱ the idea in the synopsis was there, and had potential, but the idea in the book? Let’s just say that the synopsis was reminiscent of matched by Allie Condie, and the synopsis of this book was promising, and imo falsely advertised. It seemed as if that this one person was in love with someone their whole life, but that’s not the case. It’s in a boy’s pov, and that boy ISNT EVEN BORN YET. They can’t watch love until they are ready to be born, and when bro watches love, THEN he falls in love. It was so painfully boring and life is too short to read books I’m not enjoying so I DNFed rightfully so <3
fated born ⋆ pre-read ↳ started on 12.23.24
꒰🤍꒱ I wanted to start Spectacular but I left it at my grandmas so I can read it till I go there again today 😔 so I js downloaded this book on my kindle since it’s free w prime reading !!
I'm still conflicted about this book because the premise is intriguing, as is the overall story and plot, but it felt so underwhelming.
Starting with the writing; while it was good, it also felt underwhelming at times, which made it seem unconvincing, especially towards the characters.
Furthermore, while Ardenis' point of view was interesting, I believe the novel would have been more engaging if it had included the point of view of the other civilization, rather than just the watchers, because, to be honest, I find Ardenis' point of view to be bland at some point.
Aside from this, I find the whole forbidden love; the Ardenis & Laida pairing to be dry; there's no chemistry between the two of them, and there's no angst until the part where they part.
Damien and Eva's parts are far more interesting to me, and I hope the novel includes chapters from their standpoints. So here I am, hoping for a future release of Eva and Damien's tragic novella.
That climax and ending were both very anti-climactic for me. The parts just happened so quickly and were resolved so instantly that I didn't have time to feel anything. It happened pretty fast. The political maneuvering that took place there was abrupt and hurried.
Overall, this novel had promise. The plot is interesting and contains trope elements, but it was not fully fleshed out, which makes it underwhelming and anti-climatic. I'm hoping the second one delivers the emotions that this book should.
Ardenis annoyed me like no other. It’s almost like he wanted to get caught with all of the emotional outbursts he was having. I laughed so hard throughout most of this. I need Faelyn’s story like yesterday, so I’m on to book 2!!!
Okay, so this was an INCREDIBLE introduction to this series. I would like to thank the author for the ARC opportunity prior to beginning the review. Now, I had never read a book told solely from the MMC POV, so this was new for me. I was so used to it being told from the FMC POV or Dual POVs, however, it did not affect my reading experience or the opinion I ended up with on this book. Also, the world building is so well done, so it is not overwhelming at ALL.
This story was full of pining and yearning. Of heartbreak that hurt so bad and yet also hurt so GOOD. The fantastical world created by the author is so intriguing. Whenever you think you know what is happening and are guessing at the possible plot twist, BOOM! You're taken on a completely different path, and yet it is executed beautifully. Ardenis was such a great character to read about and go through this journey with. Especially his growth throughout this book, especially emotionally! I am looking forward to see what is next for him. And after that ending? I can't even begin to guess at what is to come but I am SO ready for it. Please give this book a chance. You will enjoy going on this journey with Ardenis and the others. I don't want to go into the other characters because I feel like everything I want to say will contain spoilers. But, yes, I wholeheartedly recommend this book! Read it. You will NOT regret it! 🤎
I was hooked from the moment I started reading to the moment I finished!
This book involves, grief, love, friendship, hardships and triumphs and all these elements are wrapped up together in a fantastic, gripping story.
If you’re looking for your next otherworldly fantasy read this book to definitely for you!
What a fantastic story to begin my Kindle journey with. (I’ll also add that this book and the two other ones in the trilogy are currently available within Kindle Unlimited subscriptions so if you have a subscription don’t hesitate to read these if it’s your type of thing.)
Synopsis: The Watchers are given one major rule: Do not observe human love. Breaking this rule places one at risk for developing human emotions before ones time, and banishment to the Dark Unknown. Ardenis has fulfilled his duties as a Watcher for centuries, far longer than the rest. But his life of rules and regulations is thrown into turmoil when he falls in love with Laida. Suddenly, Ardenis is facing a world of emotions that he was only ever meant to observe, and feeling all the confusion, joy, and heartache of mortal existence.
Rating: 4/5
Fated Born is the first in a YA fantasy series. This book was a bit of a dark horse for me, it wasn’t what I expected. Each time that I thought I knew where things were going, things changed and the story took off in a new direction.
Hamblins world building is INCREDIBLE, and the story is original. This is a take on fantasy that I have never seen before, and it was refreshing. There were times when it felt a little slow, but the slowness was a worldbuilding tool that I ended up really appreciating. Acanthian existence pales in comparison to the excitement of life on Thera, and I could feel that as a reader. Parts of the story were so beautiful, with some Princess Bride vibes that I really loved. The worlds that Hamblin built are detailed and calculated and the book introduces you to so much that will be important in the series, without feeling like an info-dump. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I cried once or twice, and I re-read some passages 3 or 4 times because the emotion and the detail of the writing was just too good! I loved the perspective of this story, and I cant wait to read the next one!
I don’t always pick up fantasy books, but when I saw Kristin L Hamblin’s new release I knew I wanted to read this one.
My favorite character was Laida, although she is not the main character. Her willingness to be different and headstrong character was fun to read about. And of course, Artenis, the main character, shone in his own way. He was willing to look beyond the “rules” of Acantha and find corruption where no one else suspected any. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series, I can’t wait to see what happens to Artenis next!
My Sexual Content Disclaimer: sex is alluded to in one scene, and a scene contains a description of a bare breast brushing against a male. However, the author handled both situations delicately.
I was given an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This was such a beautifully, creative book. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series! For the first book for this author I can see where she can improve but I can also see where she exceeds as a writer and I can’t wait she her grow as an author. I loved how unique and different this book was. 1st to have the main character a man with a female another isn’t very common. 2nd the whole story is so different and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. This story was absolutely beautiful, the characters easy to love and hate. I highly recommend reading this book!
This book was full of several love stories, and I love a good romance, but my favorite thing is a fun love story full of deep thought and meaning, and this book is that 100%. It is a great storyline that quickly pulled me in, but when I had to take a break from reading, I would find myself pondering questions about my role and where I thought I would be placed in this book. It made me think about the life before this one and where we came from and did we have a choice for when we were born. Just so much deep meaning and a wonderful plot. I cannot wait until the next one comes out!!
1) It was a debut novel and I was pleasantly surprised on how good I found the writing to be. It drew me in. 2) I loved the world building and plot premise. Original but not overbearing or extreme. I still think back about the premise. It gave me cause to wonder in the best kind of premortal way.
It does have two implied moments of sexuality. Nothing that’s open door. Certainly a great YA novel but as an adult, I loved it and can’t wait for book two!
I did receive an ARC copy. All thoughts, reviews, and opinions are my own.
This was an interesting love story. It's very different from most so that in itself stood out to me most of all. It's a complex story full of different emotions. As you learn about the intriguing characters you can't help getting drawn in. Ardenis is a watcher. He is forbidden to have emotions. If one develops them they are born into the real world Thera. As Ardenis watches Eva, Damian and Issac he becomes compromised. It can't be avoided. He will have to figure out what to do with his twisted emotions so he won't get caught. A great story. Looking forward to book 2.
Once I started reading I couldn’t put the book down. This book made me feel invested in the characters’ story. I felt like I was transported to this alternate realm through great imagery and character development. It made me reflect on my own emotions and how it felt the first time I felt love. I enjoy a book that keeps me in suspense until the very end and this one did not disappoint!
I received this as an ARC book from the author in return for an honest review. I love the premise of this book first off. The details of the setting was so well done I felt like I was in the different locations with the characters. The character development was very well done and watching the human emotion come through was interesting to see.
I actually really enjoyed this story. At the start I thought this wasn’t going to be my type of story but I got engrossed in the story and absolutely loved reading it. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. What a great first book in the series.
I don’t consider myself naturally an affectionate person, but one thing I know about myself is that in my hearts of hearts, I am a romantic. I love LOVE and reading about characters falling in love, the complexities of love, forbidden love, and fighting for love. Love is amazing. It’s the most powerful thing in the world.
So when I heard about arc sign-ups becoming available for this book that is set in a realm where love doesn’t exist, my ears perked up and I was immediately intrigued. How can love not exist?
In the story of Fated Born, there are two different worlds we get to experience: the mortal world of Thera where humans exist and live out regular human lives, and then there is the world of Acantha where the Acanthians live and observe the mortal realm until it is time to be “born” into their world.
Our main character, Ardenis, is a Watcher in Acantha. As a Watcher, he reports what he observes of the humans in Thera to the council in Acantha, and they inform the other Acanthians of the human lifestyle and trends. Watchers observe every aspect of human ways with objectivity, their only restriction being one:
Do not observe mortal love.
The thing about Ardenis is that he’s no ordinary Watcher. Ardenis has been blessed by the Fates who show him “fatings” of future events happening in the mortal realm. When his blessed instincts pull him to observe a human couple, he ends up breaking the cardinal rule of the Watchers and witnesses true love for the first time and is never the same.
”The emotion between the two young lovers was a sweet tang in the air. It coated his tongue, and he licked his lips, eager for more. He shared their excitement and hope, and though he had promised himself he wouldn’t watch their love again, that promise went ignored.”
With his emotions prematurely awakened, Ardenis begins to see his surroundings and relationships in a whole new light. This awareness reveals not only the hidden corruption that’s been slithering through Acantha, but also his deep feelings for his friend, Laida.
••••••
When I began this story, I immediately noticed the author’s ability to transport a reader into a scene. She provided just vivid detail, you felt as if you were right there observing alongside of Ardenis.
I also loved that Ardenis felt like every reader ever who gets so emotionally invested into the characters they’re reading about. Ardenis’ investment into Damian and Eva’s relationship was really relatable.
Much of this book reminded me a lot of books like The Giver and The Host with the uniformity and “programmed-like state” of the people of Acantha. Even though this book isn’t technically dystopian, it shared similar sensibilities that made me really nostalgic for those books I grew up with.
However, this book held so much promise and ultimately underdelivered. I often felt disconnected and underwhelmed by some parts of the story and the characters. I wish relationships, the corruptions, and the inner workings of Acantha had been fleshed out more.
I think a POV from the mortal realm, probably from Eva, would have added so much to the story rather than only getting to observe those things through Ardenis. I do think in some ways, that style served a purpose, but, in the end, it didn’t elevate the book.
I still have so many questions and curiosities that I’m invested enough to find out what more comes of Ardenis and Laida in book 2.
Thank you to the author, Kristin L Hamblin, for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest review! Fated Born is out NOW and is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, or download it for free on Kindle Unlimited.
Wow....this has to be one of the most unique storylines I've ever read! I am 57 years old and have been an avid reader all my life....and this is one of the most original books I have ever read! The fact that it's Kristin's debut makes me very excited to see what else she has in store for us in the future! 🙂 The storyline is one of the most unique I've seen. Acantha is the premortal realm where souls wait to be born....they like to emulate human emotions but rarely actually feel them for themselves, and have to adhere to strict guidelines in behavior. The Watchers, a specific group in Acantha, are tasked with watching over the mortal realm Thera.....in all it's emotional glory! One of the things I absolutely loved about this book was the author's ability to contrast the 2 "worlds" without sacrificing the characters of Acantha. Those characters were just as vivid and engaging as the human characters they followed, while still staying true to the storyline. A world within a world, a story within a story...and both were very interesting and engaging in their own right. It started a bit slow, as the reader is introduced to Acantha, which only made the story pop even more once the reader is introduced to Thera.....after the first 2 chapters, I absolutely could not put it down! This is, by far, the best debut book I've ever read! Well written, well thought out, with strong character and world building.....times 2 lol. It is hard enough to create one world, but 2? That's something special! The 2nd book of this series is due out March 2, and I will be pre-ordering my copy as soon as Amazon lets me. An absolute MUST READ!
The Fated Born is a story of Ardenis, a Pre-Mortal being from the realm of “Acantha”. The Acanthian are a people who experience the human life from outside, and decide to be “born” when their instincts tell them that it's time. Acantha is a perfect society. The Acanthians live in an ideal and efficient way until they decide to take birth as human beings. Or so it seems… Enter Ardenis, a “Watcher Fater”. His day job involves looking at human life - observing them and learning from them. One fine day, he does something vile and completely despicable (according to the Acanthian tradition), he sees the love of two humans. And that’s when things take a turn for the worse. He starts to FEEL things. He starts to see the flaws of the society he lives in and the invisible hand of oppression hanging over it. And worst of all, he falls in love…
The author has built a world that is interesting and intriguing. The reader basically follows two stories; the story of Ardenis and his struggle with newfound emotions he has no idea what to do with; and the story of Eva, her lose and regaining of love. Of course, ‘Love” is the name of the game here and the author has truly shown her writing prowess in that regard. The two romances in the novel are beautifully written and are as believable as they can get. The other element is “emotions”. Ardenis’ journey from a neutral divine being to someone prone to emotions is something to behold. The book really likes to hurt the reader. There are scenes in the book that would just hit you in the gut. All in all, a great debut book that has introduced me to a world I would definitely love to see more of in the future.
A little "Giver" vibes mixed with "Soul" mixed with absolute perfection.
Ardenis Watcher Fater is a fantastic protagonist who Hamblin did a masterful job following through his emotional awakening. In Acantha, emotions are forbidden. If a citizen becomes "compromised" they are forced to be Born into the "real world", Thera.
I feel like Hamblin did an amazing job balancing world-building with character-building. Because of Ardenis' newly compromised state, we gained insight into how Acantha operated pre- and post- his awakening in a way that felt natural and not forced.
Likewise, as Ardenis' emotions grew stronger, we saw both his own development as well as his friends' stagnation kept without emotions. It was an interesting change from other books where all characters grow and develop simultaneously. It was as if Bram, Laida, and the rest were in stasis while Ardenis' was changing.
I also loved the narrative that took place in Thera, which we only got to see through Arden's eyes as a Watcher. It somehow gave it even more importance as he gained emotions through watching Eva, Damian, Issac, etc.
I'm going to end my review here before I get into spoilers, but if you are looking for a new YA fantasy that focuses on characters, the world, and unrequited love, this should absolutely be your next read.
easy to digest yet enticing and page turning. i was never bored with this book, there wasn’t a point i wanted to stop (or distance hehe). one of those books where you’d rather read than see people or watch something and i felt that way from the beginning.
i enjoyed the kingdom building being detailed enough while not over done, i can see this book pretty well (better than i ever felt with fourth wing and this is a far shorter book).
great cliff hangar too at the end. not abrupt but need to pick up the next book right away.
-1 star bc there were a few things i saw coming. while usually bothers me, it was things i thought were great choices and make me excited to see where the author would take it next and there was enough surprises otherwise that kept me on my toes.
This was an extremely immersive and unique reading experience! Hamblin is so good at investing you in the lives of characters. I was completely entranced by the paralleled stories, and found myself compelled to love one of them just as much as I loved the other. I really think that this will be a fantastic series and I can’t wait to see where the sequel goes.
FATED BORN IS PERFECT FOR FANS OF: 🌙🖤✨ 🤍 THE GIVER 🤍 YA ROMANTASY 🤍 MMC POV 🤍 COURT POLITICS 🤍 EARLY 2010s DYSTOPIAN WORLDS 🤍 HEARTBREAK 🤍 INDIE AUTHORS
The first sentence just really stands out to me: “Centuries of habit plastered the smile on Ardenis’s face.”
3.5 ⭐️ The concept of this book is great, I felt the writing was really descriptive and the story immersive. I liked the portrayal of the characters that weren’t allowed to feel human emotions, the writing made me feel like they were robots so that definitely came across. Although this did made it hard to connect to the love interests. I felt we needed more of their day to day interactions to see their bond - there were hints of it though. The author can definitely write about love interests though don’t get me wrong! My heart was aching for certain characters! I will continue the series for sure.
Synopsis: For most life begins at birth, but what happens before you're born? This story revolves around people known as the pre-mortals who observe the evolution of civilization until they are destined to be born. Their duties are to learn the ways of the humans and then be the souls born into those human societies. Like any other society there are laws and standards to be a pre-mortal and for thousands of years the protagonist, Ardenis, has followed them, but the line between his world (Acantha) and the world of the mortals (Thera) begins to blur as he takes he journies through his new found awakening and his struggle to uphold the duties of Acantha.
Firstly I want to say that I read this novel in 4 hours. From the first chapter I was throughly intrigued in the world building and the overall ambiance of the world's. I felt like Ancantha represented "limbo" where souls are awaiting their destined moment to be born. The atmosphere of Ancantha reminded me of an old television series, Charmed, where the "elders" would watch over their people with unbiased emotions and desires. In addition, the requirement of no emotion reminded me of the Vulcans from Ster Trek (helped me imagine their dialects and interactions). I felt instantly connected to the main character and watched as he grew into a completely different person from who he previously recognized himself as. I found myself getting angry at the lack of observation and understanding from his peers and kept pleading with the author to let others find their own emotions. The story progressives fluidly it's not slow paced to where you're easily bored, but it doesn't speed past the moments to where you're lost. It's the perfect pace for the progression the author desired. The world's themselves are described beautifully with detail and great execution. With lack of emotion and human qualities, I was worried that there would be no connection to the characters within the book. However, for me, this wasn't an issue at all. The author did a great job showing the small trickle of effect that various events have on the masses of Ancathians. To put it simply, this novel was beautifully written and I throughly enjoyed every page. There were a few questions that weren't answered fully, but seeing as these questions were also asked by the characters within the novel, it's part of the what makes this world so intriguing. The people within the world don't fully understand the reasoning behind the edicts and their ways and that drives you to wonder when will we find out? I have already downloaded the second book in the series, Fated Regin, and am excited to dive further into the world's and discover the unanswered questions, and destinies, of the characters within.
This was better then I expected it to be - I like that. It’s a totally different from other fantasy books out there - it has a very interesting and unique concept, and I am intrigued enough to download book 2 tonight 👀
Book: Fated Born by Kristen Hamblin Rate: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Basic Plot: The watchers have one main rule: Don’t observe mortal love. Doing so puts you at risk of developing human emotions before ones time and the risk of being banished to the Dark Unknown. Arden is has been a loyal watcher for centuries, longer than any other. But after viewing mortal love, his emotions are awakened and he falls deeply in love with Laida, who doesn’t even know what love is yet. He is also beginning to see the corruption all around him as he tries to keep his joy, pain, heartache, anger and confusion hidden from those around him.
Opinion: This book was amazingly unique. I’ve never read something with a premise like it, it’s like heaven before you come down, but not really. It’s hard to describe but it was written beautifully. This was my first time reading a book that is entirely from the MMC POV, which was cool. It was captivating going on Arden’s journey of gaining emotions and seeing them in those around him, even though no one is supposed to have them yet. And then you add the stories from Thera (their mortal world) which are full of love, dispare, treachery and cunning! It’s a wonderful balance and I’m very excited to see where she will go with the series. Also, THAT COVER ART! Its stunning!
Overall: This book is completely unique and who doesn’t love to read something new? If you’re into YA Fantasy, this book was amazing and I loved every second of it. The world building never got boring or tedious and the character developments are great because they go from being empty shells to a being with wonderful arrays of emotions. Read it, it’s great!
This book was recommended to me by a Facebook group and I’m so glad it was! To be honest, at first I wasn’t sure if I liked the concept, but the more I read the more I was obsessed with the story! The unique point of view really made me think about the world and life. The forbidden emotions, love, etc! It was so phenomenal. It personally pulled me out of a book slump, to which I will forever be thankful of!! Once I finished the book I immediately started book 2!
Fated Born is a wonderfully creative fantastical story of life and emotion. Acanthia, the world of souls waiting to be born as humans, is an emotinionless realm filled with strict rules. There is a high council that oversees these ‘edicts’ and enforcers who help govern over the realm. The main character, Ardenis Watcher Fater, is a ‘Watcher’ of the world of Thera, the world of humans, and reports his findings and observations to the high council. Ardenis also is the only one in Acanthia that has ‘Fatings’ which is the gift of seeing the future. He is also the longest watcher, and begins to become attached and form human-type emotions. He experiences a range of emotions from watching certain events and people on Thera, and this leads to trouble and incidents in Acanthia. I’m not going to say anymore for fear of spoilers…
Kristin L. Hamblin does such an amazing job with her brilliant writing and descriptive capabilities of the worlds and the characters contained within this magical fantasy book. I devoured this book! It is such an easy read because you become so infested in the characters, and each chapter offers something new just around the turn of the page.
I am overjoyed to read her second book, Fated Reign!
It took me awhile to finish this one. Not because of the writing because I think the author has talent and draws you into the story. I had a hard time interested in the main character but absolutely loved the side characters.
The story was still interesting and I plan to read book two to see what happens next.
