A BITE TOO FAR...

Imprisoned and tortured by a lycan pack, half-breed Sebastian Santiago is determined not to break. But now they've come up with a cruel plan -- starve Sebastian until he is half-mad with hunger, then force him to succumb to his werewolf instincts by giving him human prey to feed on.

Snatched from the streets of Istanbul, American tourist Ruby Deveraux has already seen the horror of her companions torn apart. Now she is thrown into a dark cell with a shadowy shape she can barely see. But Ruby is no ordinary woman. All her life she has been able to sense the emotions of others, and she knows instinctively that while Sebastian does not want to be her enemy, he is in the grip of sensations so dark and primitive that he can barely control them. But amid his surging feelings she can detect passion -- passion for her as a woman. This, she realizes, may be her only hope. In the unrelenting dark, trapped in a hideous prison, can Ruby and Sebastian somehow forge a fragile alliance and break free from their deadly captors to seize a love neither dreamed possible?

4 stars – Paranormal Romance

I’ve waited several months for this third installment in the Moon Chasers series about the battle between lycans, dovenatu human/lycan half-breeds, and hunters, and for the most part it delivered. This story centers on dovenatu and lycan hunter Sebastian Santiago who’s been captured and held prisoner by a lycan clan in Istanbul. After weakening his resolve and humanity through endless torture and starvation, the lycans hope to use a captive American tourist to draw out the beast in him in order to claim his power for their pack. Ruby Deveraux is an empath who can feel other people’s emotions, and it’s alienated her from other humans. Now, forced to endure imprisonment with a tormented Sebastian, can she reach through to his humanity, even as the full moon draws near, to save them both? Or will he give in to the lycan cravings of a blood moon?

Characters from the previous two books return and there are some prominent new characters introduced as well, opening the door for several possibilities with the series in the future. It’s another exciting addition to the series with fast-paced action and heated passion. My only complaints are that a significant part of the storyline was left unresolved and the ending was rather abrupt, but I guess that just means I’ll have to wait until the fourth book comes out to find out what’s in store next. 4 stars.

Dual POV. Written in 3rd person.

🅼🅲🆂:
Sebastian and Ruby

Sebastian (100+) is Rafe's twin brother. (Rafe is the H in book 2.) Both of them are dovenatus, a hybrid of lycan and human. The brothers have never known the love of family. Seb, who thinks he's too vile to be loved, hunts lycan as he wanders without a home.

Ruby (26), is an empath who can feel the emotions of others. Her gift has always set her apart. After her father's rejection and her mother's death, she moved around in foster care. Now, her own home and catering business gives her much-needed peace and solitude. But in hiding away, she has never truly lived.

This is how two outcasts learn to accept themselves, discovering the love, family, and happiness they never thought possible. With a blend of action, romance, and well-paced storytelling, it was never dull.

I particularly liked how the MCs -
▪️were broken, lonely people trying to survive.
▪️needed and helped each other.
▪️at the end, finally opened up and said I-love-you.

Ruby's stubbornness often frustrated me. She insisted she didn't need Sebastian, despite her feelings. They struggled to communicate until the end. While a bit annoying, it did make me eager to see it resolved. The conclusion was satisfying, but it needed an epilogue.

❤️‍🔥 Steam level is 3/5. There's some heat, but not enough to need a fan.

SPOILERS BELOW

🆂🅴🆃🆃🅸🅽🅶:
The story starts in Turkey and ends in Lousiana.

🅿🅻🅾🆃:
Ruby volunteers to chaperone foster kids on a trip to Istanbul. After two 15-year-old girls go missing, she uses her empath abilities to locate them at a party in a warehouse, where a lycan pack will feed during the full moon. Despite Ruby’s efforts, she's unable to save the girls and is captured. She's put in a dark cell with Sebastian, who's been imprisoned for weeks. The lycans aim to starve him, hoping his beast will feed on Ruby, making him soulless like them. They want to use his hybrid abilities.

To fight the hunger, Sebastian gives in to lust and has sex with Ruby. That and their talking keeps him grounded. A lycan infects Ruby with the lycan virus, then severely wounds her to provoke Sebastian into feeding. In a touching scene, Ruby begs Sebastian to end her life, but he refuses and she soon heals. They seize the chance to escape when a rival pack attacks.

Ruby is taken by a dovenatu and his lycan mate, who need her help to destroy a lycan pack. Meanwhile, Seb reunites with his brother Rafe and others. His bond with Ruby guides him to her. The two groups blow up the lycan pack’s warehouse. After the explosion, Ruby leaves with Darius, who's been searching for a mate since book one, but he's once again rebuffed.

Returning home, Ruby struggles with her new lycan nature. She hopes to control her urges during the full moon with the help of her friend Adele. Seb follows Ruby home, angered by her choices.

One of my favorite scenes: Ruby wakes up to find Seb in her house. Believing he’s come to kill her, she runs into the woods. She is soon caught by Seb, who reassures her that he will never hurt her. Fueled by their shared emotions, they have sex again.

Seb stays with Ruby to help her during the next full moon. While continuing her catering business, they have lots of sex (mostly off-page). Ruby's plan to sedate herself fails. She goes after Adele, but discovers her empath ability gives her control over her lycan instincts: she cannot harm others without inflicting pain upon herself.

Jonah, a survivor of the warehouse bombing, seeks revenge on Seb and Ruby for Sorcha's death, a dovenatu he cared for. He seriously wounds Seb, but is unable to kill him or Ruby after witnessing their love.

Afterwards, Seb leaves believing Ruby no longer needs him, while she fears he's abandoning her like her parents. When Seb returns, Ruby rushes out of her house for a heartfelt reconciliation.

Seb's Thoughts Summarized: His mother taught him to hate what he was. When Ruby came into his life, she became the thing he hated more than himself, the very thing he spent his life hating and fighting. If he can love her, maybe he wasn't something to be despised either. They both deserved love and happiness.

♥ "You were mine the moment you joined me in that dungeon. I don't care if you need me or not. I'm staying. Forever."
♥ She tried to nod, but he held her too tight. "You're right, I don't need you," she agreed. "But I want you. I love you. I do. I do..."
♥ A smile split his face. "Thank God you said that. I love you, too."
♥ I know," she choked, feeling every bit of the love in his heart, sensing their future through him, right then. Side by side. Long and happy and together. "I know."
♥ He shook his head, still smiling as he brought his lips back down to hers. "Of course you do."

Easily my favorite of the series so far. The characters are totally believable and likable. There are a few plot twists and lots of hot and heavy animal lust. Again, it's very heavy on the romance. They recap most of the important stuff that happened in the previous two, so this could easily be read on its own. It will be a re-read for me.

Loved it. Great action scenes, a very hot, a bit on the brutal side, romance (the heroes were at first forced together by the villains)and nice, well developed characters with special abilities. The sequence between action and romance give a nice roller-coaster feel, and make the whole novel the best escape read possible. A series I'll keep following with great pleasure.

I really liked this story. I started right off with Sebastian in dungeon and naked and starving.
These werewolves are not nice. At full moon they shift and kill and eat humans. Are heroine, Ruby gets caught and thrown in dungeon with Sebastian. He is a half-breed and controls shifting and doesn't eat people. Their escape and fight and romance has many problems to solve on so many levels. Non-stop action and romance. Really good. I'm going to read more in series.

This had a thick layer of dirt on hit in my TBR pile. The werewolves are simplistic and brutal. The romance was challenging to get into. I did not particularly like either one of the main characters.

First I should begin by saying that I absolutely LOVE Sophie Jordan (aka Sharie Kholer). She's pretty much perfect and consistently so, as far as I'm concerned. This is my first Kholer novel and I started with book #3 in the series. (Don't do that) :)

Dovenatu (1/2 were, 1/2 human) and lycan (werewolf) hunter Sebastian Santiago (who's twin brother is featured in book #2) is being abused, starved and held prisoner by a lycan clan in Istanbul. The clan's alpha hopes that by sending in various lycan females - to essentially rape Sebastian - they can breed dovenatu powers into their lycan clan. The main power being that Sebastian can shift at will whereas typical lycans have no control and shift only 3 days a month. {After reading the other two books I've learned that Lycans are ruled by the moon (causes shifting) and a blood lust. There goals are feed and fornicate. Dovenatu have the same can control their shifts, emotions, needs, etc. and basically can choose to lives as normal humans. Lycan's can choose too but it's much, much harder and requires physical restraint during the moon cycle.}

Ruby Deveraux is a Louisiana tourist and an empathic who ends up in, and escaping the lycan's den just before one of their frenzied feedings/mass murders. Ruby is caught and instead of feeding on her they imprison her with Sebastian. The lycans hope that by starving Seb he will be enticed to join with them or feed on Ruby. It's a bit more complex than all that but anymore and I think we're dealing with spoilers.

So the story is fine and there is nothing majorly wrong with it. I have some minor complaints that in the end added up to me thinking the book was only a little better than average or at least not as brilliant as her YA/Historical Romance. For example, Ruby has lived a solitary life and is used to people turning away from her so anytime Sebastian is hesitant toward her she takes it as rejection instead of self preservation. It's almost always self preservation and never rejection. This happens a handful or more times and regardless of individual pride I was a little disappointed that this was the H/h's main conflict (the other main conflict is a spoiler). Another small complaint I had was that the H/h didn't really spend a lot of time together or get to know one another. When imprisoned they are either fighting to stay alive or away from one another or wanting each other. They talk but accomplish very little. A good portion of the book is the imprisonment, then they are separated way longer than they are together and it's more of Ruby running and Seb chasing but no one is sure why...except maybe to kill her. Even when they are finally together we only get a day or two of happiness and connection. I had hoped that they would find Gunter and fix everything too. I expected Ruby to be a bit more upset about her life before and after Sebastian. She's been through a lot just being an empath and add to that what happens in this novel, I just expected more tears and more of a desire for comfort. I suppose I was looking for a damsel and for her to give Seb a reason to confess how he felt. The sex was steamy but not enough to enhance the story/relationship. I did enjoy Seb's possessiveness before/during/after the scenes when he thought Darius claimed Ruby but I felt it could have been more/deeper/longer. I also enjoyed Seb's dialogue on the very last page but felt the last few pages were drawn out. I wish the book would have had a bit more external emotion as it was saturated internal emotion and boatloads of suffering. I was quite sad a lot and normally that sadness is a hindrance to my reading enjoyment. In this case I took it in stride and I don't think if affected my ultimate opinion of the book. I do plan to keep reading if I can find the books in my local libraries and I hope that Sorcha/Jonah's story is as awesome as it promises to be. What concerns me is that this book is the most highly rated of the series and since I didn't love it I'm worried that I'll like the others less.

{After reading the other books I wish to amend my last statement. The are books are better, yet similar. And I'm thinking that my so-so review of this one lies solely in the fact that I read these out of order and didn't quite understand the world yet.}

The book starts out with Sebastian Santiago(a half-lycan breed called "dovenatu") being tortured by a pack of lycans. They are depriving him of food so that he is starving; then their sick plan includes throwing a human in his cell, where he will be unable to control his bloodlust. Ruby Deveraux is in Istanbul with a group of children waiting to be adopted. When two go missing, she takes it upon herself to find them before they come to harm. Unfortunately, she falls right into the hands of the lycan pack and they know just what to do with her. They throw her in to a cell with Sebastian and wait for him to break and devour her. Ruby is different too; she can read people's emotions. More than that, she can FEEL what other people are feeling (pain, anguish, joy, etc.). From the other lycans she felt a black void, immense hunger. She can feel the hunger that is consuming Sebastian, but she does not sense the black void, the darkness in him. There is more to Sebastian than meets the eye and she soon realizes that there is something else inside him that she can play off of to give her a better chance at surviving this ordeal: lust. As hungry as he is, she can sense that he craves her as well. Obviously they are going to have to work together if either of them are going to get out alive. If they can get past Sebastian's blood lust they might just have a chance...

1) Character Development: This book has excellent character development! I picked it up actually thinking that it was the first book in the series. WRONG! It's #3, and when I figured that out I was thinking "Ah man, should I wait to read this until I've read the other two books or just go for it and hope for the best?" I was not disappointed; the author does an excellent job of giving back story so that you know something of what happened in the previous books. Also, you get a lot of information about Ruby and Sebastian's pasts (especially Ruby) which really cements the connection you develop with the characters. It's really easy to relate and empathize with them.

The latest book in Sharie Kohler's Moon Chaser series blew me away. From the gutsy, explosive first meeting between Sebastian and Ruby it was clear this book was going to be darker and even more emotionally charged than the previous two in the series--both of which were terrific. And TO CRAVE A BLOOD MOON delivered in spades!

Ms. Kohler's cover blurb relates the beginning much better than I can:

Imprisoned and tortured by a lycan pack, half-breed Sebastian Santiago is determined not to break. But now they've come up with a cruel plan -- starve Sebastian until he is half-mad with hunger, then force him to succumb to his werewolf instincts by giving him human prey to feed on.

Snatched from the streets of Istanbul, American tourist Ruby Deveraux has already seen the horror of her companions torn apart. Now she is thrown into a dark cell with a shadowy shape she can barely see.

As an empath, Ruby feels what Sebastian feels and, in understanding what's happening to him, changes both their destinies.

The richly painted setting, the evil and sadistic lycan captors, and the hopelessness of the situation are so vividly drawn, it was hard to imagine a love story could grow from such violence and turmoil--both internal and external. Only someone with Sharie Kohler's skill and dead-on instincts could pull off the brutal meeting of these two with such sensual intensity and heart-breaking emotion. And she doesn't pull any punches as they fight soulless lycans and their own inner demons on their way to giving and accepting unconditional love.

The story also incorporates characters I adored from the past books--Sebastian's twin brother and his wife as well as one of my favorites, the ancient lycan, Darius. With a larger battle as a backdrop to the romance, the paranormal world expands and takes on intriguing dimensions that made me want to read the next book as soon as I finished the last page of this one.

Imprisoned and starved in a bid to cause his to feed on human flesh, the hero is torutured by the presence of the heroine. To stop the craving to kill her, he sleeps with her and after she's turned and they exscape, he hunts her down to protect her. The heroine is an empathy but she really doesn't understand how many feel. She's heartless and cruel to the hero. Sure, he slept with her out of a bid to control his urges and he did make it clear that he'd kill her if they didn't escape, but he's just as much a prisoner in that mess ass she was. Instead, she's constantly throwing it in his face and when he absolutely guilt ridden and hurt, she turns around and forgives him. She played with his emotions and it wasn't cool. I really dislike it when being a werewolf is portrayed as a soulless killing machine, instead I like to think of them as shape shifters. As it happens I liked the hero's character and his strong will in face of all he has to deal with. I just wish the heroine wasn't such a bitch.

If I could, I would give this book 4.5 stars.
If you love werewolves, you should check out the Moon Chaser series. This is the 3rd within the series...As stated before, I have a problem with starting a series with book 1 - really should pay more attention when I purchase books.Anyway, this book captivated and held my interest and I didn't get confused, it flowed like a stand-alone book.

Chloe is a strong woman and I mean strong. She goes through so much in this book: abducted, tossed in a dirty cell with a naked man who is a starving were-wolf, death surrounds her escape and her troubles even follow her home.
Sebastian...I would love to have been locked in the cell with him. He is FINE and all out alpha. How can he not be sexy? He is starving, going mad, and the full moon is coming - all together - fantastic!
(I have since purchased the rest of these books and HAVE to recommend them to all paranormal romance lovers and werewolf fans)

I don't want to post spoilers ... I want you to savor this book.

Man, this book was GREAT! It had lots of fights, a sexy, strong, wounded warrior and a strong (although she may not realize it in the beginning) female. Book 2, Kiss of a Dark Moon about Rafe, Sebastian's twin, and Kit was good but this was SO much more. I didn't want it to end.

Man, I am so impatient and hate waiting for another release in a series I love...

I look forward to reading more about Jonus, who will most certainly be seen in future books. And Darius continues to spark interest, since he's been in a all three books, I'm hopeful that he will eventually find a mate as well.

I always find it interesting to read books about people that have had their worth smashed so far down that they think they are never going to worthy of anyone. Even when they have evidence of the opposite they still can't see it. And this is the case with Sebastian and Ruby.

Both of these 2 have been told over and over again since childhood, sometimes it isn't with words, but with actions, which can be just as damaging as words. I really liked these 2 together. Once they could get past their issues they were fun.

I also really liked how all the past characters came together to save Sebastian. It was like the supernatural dream team. I would love to see more with them.

I thought the building of the super packs was interesting. I have a hard time believing that they are all gone. I guess we'll see with future books.

Another spectacular addition to the Moon Chasers series. The action gets better, the romance grittier and the sex amazing. I really liked and felt for Sebastian Santiago who was feared by everyone including his mother who actually tried to kill him. And poor Ruby Deveraux is an empath and her father abandoned her and her mother died leaving her a ward of the state of Louisiana. When she is turned on a vacation in Turkey, her world collapses and Sebastian is there to pick her up and guide her. This is one of those romances where both h/h are solitary for various reasons and committing to the love of their life is very difficult. This one drags out until the very last page of the book where the HEA finally happens. Excellent!

Sebastian is a hybrid lycan who can change at will. The lycans want that power as they have to change every full moon but can't change any other time. He is trapped in a prison, starving to death when they bring a human female into the prison hoping he will turn and kill her making him one of them. She isn't just any female though, she is an empath who can feel other people's emotions. She feels his emotions and is scared but also attracted to him. She is scratched by a lycan which makes her a lycan and Sebastian who is a lycan hunter has to protect her. Apparently this is book 3 in a series, but I really didn't find it that interesting to read anymore.

This is another solid outing in the series. The hero is a hybrid Sebastien(the brother of the hero in the 2nd book), he is captured by a pack who wants to use him and then we have our heroine Ruby an empath who has been rejected all her life and is on chaperone duty for some foster kids, when 2 girls disappear she goes after them and is captured. The pack people want to use her against Sebastien who they have been abusing and starving. As usual things happens(Ruby is bitten and infected, Sebastien's family comes for him, pack wars etc). A pretty enjoyable book.

I love how each story brings something different to the series. In this case, we have an empath and a half breed Lycan. It took me a while to warm up to Ruby, but I completely sympathized with her and her feelings of aloneness. Sebastian was ridiculously stubborn and I'm glad he finally shaped up. I loved seeing how this circle of almost outcasts continues to grow. Another fantastic addition to the series that I recommend.

The beginning of the book was a page turner but then the plot fell kind of flat and staggered. By this point I was fustrated. The heat and passion between the main characters got lost with all the other business that the author was introducing into the story. All in all not a bad book, just one I wouldn't read again.

So far, so good.. still in the middle of it. So far, I feel sympathy for a secondary character,
and worried for the hero, and I hope the heroine gets her act together. And I hope the first bad guy finally gets his just desserts because he's a real rotten egg - as all good villains are.
