I feel like not much happened in this volume. It's still about Que-min and Jung-Woo and I still don't really care about these characters. This one wasn't even funny which was the previous volumes saving grace. And there wasn't really anything romantic either... maybe like for one second in one of the scenes but... meh. I wouldn't read the next volume if it wasn't the last one, because might as well finish the series.
The fourth volume in this manhwa series, and again often confusing, poor plotting, and little to no character development and motivation. To be fair, there are plenty of plot-driven manga and manhwa with weak type-cast characters. But I’m trying to pinpoint what makes this series not work. I think it’s that so much of it is forced for the sake of plot, but it uses the same elements repeatedly.
The underlying premise introduced in volume 2 (the series has made a near complete departure from volume 1 at this point) just soldiers on in this volume. A tough girl falls for a pretty boy the moment she sees him, and is blackmailed by a gang leader who instantly falls for her the moment they meet into being his girlfriend or he’ll beat the pretty boy up. She agrees, which makes no sense as not only has she never spoken to pretty boy and knows nothing about him beyond seeing he’s pretty, he doesn’t even know her name nor does he bother to learn it. Similarly, the gang leader knows nothing about the girl. He falls for her when she tries to defend pretty boy from him and he bears her up, but she capably fights back. That may be enough except that he seems to be in love with her.
This volume also leans into the younger sister of on of his gang members who is jealous because she loves the gang leader and tries to make him jealous and then make trouble for the girl. Except her plan is to ruin the girl’s reputation with her friends, which would have no effect on the gsng leader’s infatuation. Without development of either the characters or the relationships, there’s no satisfying basis for their motivations to go to such extremes.
The plot tends to jump abruptly and often between various characters and plot threads, making it hard to follow. There’s another rival gang who tries to get to the gang leader by going after his “girlfriend” by beating up the pretty boy, which makes no sense. When pretty boy is able to fight back, they decide to recruit him, but then that whole plot thread gets dropped, or he’s recruited by the main gang? I didn’t really follow it. It seems like that whole thing gets dropped to focus on the little sister. And there’s a whole thing about a stray dog the pretty boy was feeding who the girl finds and keeps at her house just so he’ll come over. The pretty boy is sort of a blank, he’s completely oblivious to everything going on in the plot and seems to have no thoughts or feelings about any of it. It’s like he’s stoned for the entire series.
The characters are all vaguely unlikable. In part because they all insist on trying to force and manipulate their crushes into reciprocating their feelings, but their feelings are not based on anything beyond an immediate physical attraction. They (and the reader) never get to know each other. They also tend to be exceptionally physically violent—granted, it’s a gang, but there's a lot of beating others up. And the heroine even plans to put the stray dog in scalding water after it snaps at her when she tries to dry it off after a bath.
I came across the first volume of this at a thrift store, and liked it enough to buy the other four volumes on eBay. If it weren’t for the fact that there is only one volume left and I own it, I wouldn’t bother continuing this series.
