About the author

Andrey Kurkov is a Russian and Ukrainian writer who writes in Russian (fiction) and Ukrainian (non-fiction).

Kurkov was born in the small town of Budogoszcz, Russia, on April 23, 1961. When he was young, his family moved to Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1983 Kurkov graduated from the Kyiv Pedagogical Academy of Foreign Languages and later also completed a training in Japanese translation.

Among Kurkov's most famous Russian novels are 'Smert postoronnego' (1996, translated into English in 2001 under the title 'Death and the Penguin') and 'Zakon ulitki' (2002, translated into English in 2005 as 'Penguin lost)'. Kurkov's only Ukrainian non-fiction book is 'Ruh "Emanus": istoriya solidarnosti' (2017).

This is a choppy ride with three time lines that are hard to keep pegged because the chapters are so short - it can make you dizzy. In some aspects Kurkov's dark satiric novel can still be seen as rewarding to those wanting the insider's view of just what has occured since publication.

I enjoyed this book to some extent.

The book describes three periods in the President's life simultaneously, so you keep flipping backwards and forwards in time. In some sense I really liked this - it puts the whole of the President's life into context. For example, you know when you're reading about earlier periods what is going to be happening in later periods, so that what is currently happening is transitory - for example, you know that the relationship you're reading about must break down, and you anticipate what could happen to bring this about.

However, I think to some extent, the way the book is written also has the effect of making the book less compelling because you don't get 'into' one phase in his life for hardly any time before changing time period again.

Some of the story lines in the book are very compelling and moving - however there are some other story lines which I didn't particularly enjoy - they just weren't particularly interesting and I had to force myself to keep reading them rather than just skimming them.

Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this book. It's not bad, but it wasn't a particular pleasure to read. It took me a long time to read it, generally because there was always something more interesting to be reading than this (even the Metro!) which I think says a lot. There were good things about it, but ultimately I think I'll forget about it pretty quickly, and it will be going to the charity shop next week!

A black comedy cum satire of a fictional Ukrainian President's life, loves and political and personal manipulations over a period of 40 years from the days of the Soviet Bloc through to the wheeler dealer 'new democracy' of the 21st century. The President's adult life is told across 3 ages, yet concurrently throughout the book, along with a myriad cast (with an index at the start of the book), I found the book difficult to truly engage with, but acknowledged most of the black humour and satire, not up to the unique standard set by some of his other work, in my opinion. 3 out of 12

Took too long to get into due to the writing style- flitting between 3 different periods of time every couple of pages. But overall was a good story, I understand the point, I did become fond of some of the characters and had a somewhat satisfactory ending. I also think the description hypes the events of the book too much as not much detail was had other than the president’s love interests and his friendship with a hermit

Ανάλαφρο μυθιστόρημα, που το επέλεξα πιστεύοντας ότι θα έχει να κάνει με την πρόσφατη ιστορία της Ουκρανίας, αλλά δεν είναι έτσι.
Περιγράφει την άνοδο ενός ουκρανού (γεννημένου το 1961), και που από σοβιετικός πολίτης, διαπλεκόμενος αρχικά γίνεται στέλεχος επιχειρήσεων, κατόπιν υφυπουργός, για να καταλήξει στο τέλος πρόεδρος οπότε και θα χρειαστεί να αντιμετωπίσει μια ρωσική πλεκτάνη που έχει σαν σκοπό να τον ανατρέψει.
Ενδιαφέρουσα είναι η ανάπτυξη, αφού γίνεται με μικρά κεφάλαια, όπου εναλλάσσονται η σοβιετική περίοδος (5/1975- 8/1992), η περίοδος της ανοδικής πορείας (9/2002 - 2/2006) και η προεδρική περίοδος (1/2013 - 3/2016).
"Όχι, δεν έγινα πραγματικά θρήσκος, έπαψα όμως να είμαι άθεος. Κατάλαβα ότι η σημασία της εκκλησίας και η σημασία της πίστης είναι δύο πράγματα εντελώς διαφορετικά. Η εκκλησία αποτελεί μέρος του κρατικού συστήματος, χρησιμότατο κατά την περίοδο των εκλογών. Η πίστη αποτελεί για τους πιστούς εκλογείς πρόφαση και κίνητρο να εμπιστευτούν την εκκλησία. Και δεν μιλώ για το ότι η εκκλησία είναι κάτι ωραίο, είναι σαν θέατρο σε ξένη γλώσσα, όπου χωρίς μετάφραση δεν καταλαβαίνεις γρι, αλλά το θέαμα είναι χάρμα οφθαλμών."

KURKOW, Andrej: „Die letzte Liebe des Präsidenten“, Zürich 2007
Ein Roman, der einen Mitteleuropäer in eine andere Welt führt. Ein Roman, der in einem sehr guten und leicht lesbaren, aber auch interessantem Stil geschrieben ist. Ein Roman mit einer eigenartigen Struktur. Die Geschichte eines Präsidenten wird nicht sequentiell erzählt, sondern in drei Zeitfenstern. Ein Kapitel aus den 70er und 80er Jahren wird gefolgt von einem zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts und abgeschlossen mit dem Jahr 2015 und 2016. In dieser Reihenfolge reihen sich die Kapitel aneinander. Zeitschlitze, die sich mit zunehmender Seitenzahl schließen und am Ende ein Ganzes, eine lückenlose, auf einer kompletten Zeitachse stattfindendes Geschehen ergeben.
Die Zeitfenster schlossen sich erst nach fast 700 Seiten. Das erste begann mit Mai 1975 und endete mit Oktober 1992. Das dritte begann mit Mai 2015 und fiel dann zurück auf das Jahr 2013 um am Ende mit März 2016 zu enden. Das zweite Zeitfenster kam erst spaeter dazu und begann mit den Erzählungen zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts und endete 2006. Ein genialer Trick des Autors, der den Leser immer aktiv hielt. Er müsste schauen, um die Zusammenhänge nicht zu verlieren.
Nun zur Story: das Leben eines ukrainischen Mannes. Aus einer einfachen Familie. Der Vater früh gestorben und die Mutter zur Alleinerzieherin geworden. Zwei Buben: Zwillinge. Einer muss in ein Nervenheim und später in die Schweiz. Der "normale" Zwilling wird Präsident der Ukraine. Wie so ein Leben eines führenden Politikers verläuft ist für einen mitteleuropäischen Laien unvorstellbar. 
Bei all den Tiefschlägen, die die Menschen dieses Romans bekommen endet die Geschichte mit einem Happy End. 
Ein genialer Roman. Ein interessanter Schriftsteller.

Πρωτοπρόσωπη αφήγηση, ιστορικός ενεστώτας, 650 σελίδες. Μικρά κεφάλαια, μπρος-πίσω σε τρεις χρονικές περιόδους κάθε δυόμιση σελίδες, τόσοι πολλοί χαρακτήρες που κάποιες εκδόσεις κυκλοφορούν με ευρετήριο (όχι η δική μας, κάποιες στα εξωτερικά).
Και τώρα που μείναμε εμείς οι πέντε, πάμε και στα καλά: Με τα διαρκή του πήγαινε-έλα από τη Σοβιετική Ένωση των 80s στη σύγχρονη Ουκρανία και τις αμήχανες σχέσεις της με την Δύση από τη μια και με τη Ρωσία από την άλλη, ο Κούρκοφ χτίζει τους δύο πρωταγωνιστές του, την χώρα και τον Πρόεδρο της σχεδόν ψυχαναλυτικά, χωρίς όμως να το φιλοσοφεί, απλώς αραδιάζοντας γεγονότα και αφήνοντας σε μόνη/ο να κάνεις την σύνδεση. Ο ήρωας του δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα συμπαθής, είναι όμως παιδί της εποχής του, όπως είμαστε όλοι, και τα 'χει εξίσου χαμένα με όλους τους υπόλοιπους -που δεν έφτασαν μέχρι το αξίωμα του προέδρου. Ότι δεν τον καταλαβαίνεις, πάντως, είναι το μόνο που δεν μπορείς να του προσάψεις.
Ναι, θα μπορούσε να είναι μικρότερο, είναι σε πολλές φάσεις φλύαρο σαν τους φίλους που σου διηγούνται και το όνειρο που είδαν το προηγούμενο βράδυ όταν κάπως θεωρούν ότι συνδέεται με την ιστορία που λένε. Μπορείς όμως να θυμώσεις με τους φίλους σου;
Δάφνες αριστουργήματος μπορεί να μην διεκδικεί, αλλά για πρώτη γνωριμία με την λογοτεχνία της Ουκρανίας (όχι, ο Γκόγκολ δε μετράει. Τι εννοείτε μετράει; Άντε καλά, της σύγχρονης Ουκρανίας) πιστεύω ότι αξίζει να διαβαστεί, μέρες που είναι.

This is a terrific book, one that really gave me an insight into the post-Soviet mindset.

The book looks at three timelines in one man's life. First is his youth from about 1985 to 1995, as he gets disengaged with the Soviet system and eventually gets into politics. The second timeline is mid-career, as he is a successful bureaucrat in the Ukrainian government around 2005, and the third timeline is when he is President of Ukraine about 2015-6.

The interplay of tradition, the Soviet way of doing things, and imported Western ideas and methods is brilliantly depicted as we see our hero at three phases in his life. The novel cuts between the three as if it were a movie. Perhaps some readers might be put off, but as you go deeper into the novel the links between the three become stronger. The conclusion of the novel is terrific.

Highly recommended to anyone interested in the post-Communist (and not just Ukrainian) world.

I had a battle with my last book but, pleasingly, I was very much in accord with this one. I'm going to blow my own trumpet a bit here but I cleared 440 pages in under a day because the story is just that good. I've read a number of Kurkov's books and the consistent things are the brilliance of the storylines with plot twists, characters who are victims of circumstance and no shortage of intrigue. There's things that could happen in post-Soviet Ukraine that just wouldn't be feasible anywhere else.
Unlike Kurkov's other books, this one was light on absurdity but heavy on the touching narrative. The President is the big man but you cannot help but feel that he is just as fragile as anyone after three failed marriages, three dead children and a donor heart inside him that has a remote control unit in it that some maniac could simply switch him off at a moment's notice.
I'm sorry I read it so quickly. It's like I've finished all my chocolate at once...

This is a tough one to rate. Does it deserve a 3 or a 4? I'm not sure. I hope I'll know by the time I complete this review.

So, one of the stand-out features of this novel is that it's written in the first person in an almost journal form, but you are getting three different time streams being told simultaneously. The chapters (which are very short) typically run in the order of the year 2015 onwards, then late 80s and then early 2000s. This gives the story an interesting arc. Initially, a lot of it feels a bit superficial, but then as it unfolds you start to get the three different time frames interacting, which meant I was feeling pretty invested in the whole thing as it came to the end.

There's a lot of political dark humour in here. I believe this came out a bit before the Ukraine crisis, which throws a few of its ideas into sharp relief. On top of that, the exchanges between characters are typically understated and witty, which I greatly enjoy.

I'm not going to describe the story particularly. It's simply about the life of the president at three different times and his various trials and tribulations. Some of it is very moving, for many reasons. It certainly is not predictable and I don't want to spoil it.

That being said, I'm struggling to give this a 4. It feels like one of those novels you can describe in such a way that it sounds great (to me at least), but then in practice it doesn't quite work out. Perhaps it's me. Maybe there's a deeper meaning in here, which I've missed entirely. As far as I can see though, it's fairly straightforward story, told in an interesting way while holding a middle finger to the political situation in the Eastern Bloc.

I guess my main issue is that it just lacked that little bit of punch in certain regards. It's quite an emotional tale in many ways, but it's told with such a dry tone that it carries little impact. Similarly, it's never out and out hilarious. The whole thing is kind of dry.

More than anything though, I think the pacing may be a little off. It takes a long time for things to knit together and start to get compelling. It's a pretty lengthy book in which not a huge amount happens. I've read multiple other titles in these short journal forms and typically, they aren't especially long. Perhaps there's a reason for that.

Still a good read, but I can't help but feel that everything was in place for it to be better than this.

What an interesting book. For me, thinking about it again 18 months after having read it (well, that's a recommendation in itself), it demonstrates the haphazard route by which people come to power, and how those in power are often mere pawns in the hands of the men and women behind them. Although the book begins with a demonstration of the power wielded by president Bunin (he orders that the birds be silenced outside his window, and this is done almost immediately), by the end of the book, this power has been comprehensively shown to be completely empty.

The plot is surreal: some action is set in the Soviet era, some in the future, and there are snapshots of the times in between. The canonisation of Lenin is just one satirical observation on the way developments in this troubled region can unfold in completely unpredictable and irrational ways. A miraculous crop of potatoes is seized on by the Ukrainian people as a demonstration of God's intervention: in fact the cause, as the president, his entourage and the reader all know, is far more banal.

It is particularly poignant to read this today, when Ukraine's former prime minister Yuliya Tymoshenko is currently in jail for supposedly negotiating an oil and gas deal that was detrimental to Ukraine's interests. At the same time, racism and anti-Semitism are currently marring the Euro 2012 matches in Ukraine and Poland. Ukraine, in this novel, is a country that lurches from one development to the next, without rhyme or reason, scarred by its violent history. Yet it is redeemed by the intense love it inspires in its people and leaders.

With the dark surroundings familiar to readers of Russian anti-establishment novels offset by the little moments of Ukrainian humour like furniture and alcohol musings, Andrey Kurkov's writing is a breath of fresh air to readers who appreciate slice of life stories. Admittedly the life in question is Ukrainian President Bunin, but his character merely acts as an observer to the Ukraine pre and post Soviet Union as well as the machinations of his loyal yet twisted subordinates against an ambitious oligarch.



For once the book jacket plays an important role in setting appropriate expectations and mood, as many fellow reviewers who saw comments comparing him to Gogol and Dostoevsky may have hoped for an epic ivan denisovich without reading the synopsis. For me, it was a conciliatory story about the crazy mess that was Soviet breaking up and how it affected Kurkov himself; how his old age has reconciled him to what may have been momentous events years ago. A wonderful, easy and sometimes heartbreaking read. SO GOOD for the soul.

Ο Ουκρανός συγγραφέας Αντρέι Κούρκοφ μας διηγείται τρεις περιόδους από τη ζωή ενός Ουκρανού. Η πρώτη είναι τα νιάτα του, όταν το Κίεβο ανήκε ακόμα στην Σοβιετική Ένωση, στη δεκαετία του 1980. Στην δεύτερη περίοδο τον βρίσκουμε ως ανερχόμενο και πολλά υποσχόμενο στέλεχος της Ουκρανικής κυβέρνησης στην δεκαετία του 2000 και στην τρίτη περίοδο τον συναντάμε στο ανώτατο αξίωμα της χώρας στην αμέσως επόμενη δεκαετία. Ο συγγραφέας με δόσεις πικρόχολου χιούμορ μας διηγείται ταυτόχρονα την νεώτερη ιστορία της χώρας του και τον τρόπο που τα μέλη του κόμματος ήρθαν ξανά σε υψηλόβαθμες θέσεις και απέκτησαν χρήματα από την μία μέρα στην άλλη. Είναι η ιστορία της μετάβασης από την Σοβιετική πραγματικότητα στην σημερινή κατάσταση αυτών των χωρών. Διαθέτει όμως και αρκετό συναίσθημα καθώς καταπιάνεται με τα θέματα της μοναξιάς, του έρωτα, των ανθρώπινων σχέσεων. Και έχει και μια γκροτέσκα παρομοίωση που αφορά την καρδιά του ήρωα.

Ένα ωραίο βιβλίο με αρκετό πολιτικό χιούμορ που όμως τα 4 αστέρια είναι μάλλον πάρα πολλά ενώ τα 3 αστέρια λίγα.. Γραμμένο το 2004 μιλάει για την ψυχοσυνθεση σε προσωπικό αλλά και πολιτικό επίπεδο μιας χώρας που έχει ναι μεν ανεξαρτητοποιηθεί από τη Ρωσία μετά την πτώση της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης λίγο περισσότερο από μια δεκαετία, αλλά η οποία παραμένει σαφώς επηρεασμένη από την τελευταία, παρά τη νέα τάξη πραγμάτων, δημοκρατία, εκλογές κλπ. Ακολουθεί τον πρωταγωνιστή, ο οποίος πρέπει να σημειώσω περιβάλλεται μόνο από όμορφες γυναίκες με στητά στήθη (!?) αλλιώς οι γυναίκες δεν είναι άξιες λόγου, σε 3 χρόνους, όπου οι δύο πρώτοι, 1975-1999, 2004-2006, περιγράφουν το πριν, τη μετάβαση και το μετά στην ανεξάρτητη πλέον Ουκρανία, και ένα φανταστικό για την εποχή που το έγραφε ο συγγραφέας 2015 (όπου διαβάζοντας το σήμερα και με την δύσκολη κατάσταση που βιώνει η ίδια χώρα, έπρεπε να υπενθυμίζω συνέχεια στον εαυτό μου να μην προσπαθώ να κάνω παραλληλισμούς με πραγματικά γεγονότα γιατί πολύ απλά δεν είχαν ακόμα συμβεί την εποχή της συγγραφής του βιβλίου). Είναι ένα από αυτά τα βιβλία που περιγράφοντας το ακούγεται πολύ ενδιαφέρον (που είναι) και που θες οπωσδήποτε να το διαβάσεις, αλλά στο τέλος σου αφήνει ένα κενό, σαν (στο τέλος) να μην κατάφερε να ανταποκριθεί στις προσδοκίες που το ίδιο το βιβλίο θέτει, ή μπορεί κάτι να ξεφεύγει σε μένα.. Σε κάθε περίπτωση αποτελεί μια καλή αναφορά στο ανατολικό μπλοκ, με ενδιαφέρουσα πλοκή που αξίζει να διαβαστεί.

The Presidents Last Love by Andrey Kurkov - Good

I remember when this was first published in the UK and the author was at the Edinburgh Book Festival. He had accidentally predicted the poisoning of the Ukrainian President and had been hauled in for questioning about how he knew!

It takes place in multiple timelines each one significant: early 1980s, early 1990s, early 2000s and mid 2010s when Sergey Pavlovich Bunin is a young man, an aspiring politician and ultimately President negotiating a complicated life of multiple marriages, corruption, and heavy drinking, while Ukraine is also dealing with Soviet and post Soviet times and trying to find a way through years of corruption and oppression. Darkly humourous, it is a difficult read now with the weight of the history in the last 20 years (this was actually written in 2004 without the understanding of what was to come).

I did like one sentence in particular: "I sound calm, but inside I am desperately running barefoot through snow, howling wolves at my heels." I've had days like that too ;-)

J'aime beaucoup l'humour caustique de Kourkov. Mais j'apprécie peu les flash-backs, uniquement au compte-gouttes. Dans ce roman, forcément, comme le personnage principal, président de l'Ukraine, se remémore ses souvenirs, les flash-backs sont inévitables. Mais c'est fatigant de devoir à chaque fois se demander à quelle période les souvenirs se rapportent, beaucoup trop de dates différentes, étalées dans un total désordre sur 40 ans.
Sans cet aspect -pour moi- pénible, je me délecte évidemment toujours des sarcasmes de Kourkov envers le grand voisin, qu'il soit URSS ou simplement Russie, champion de la corruption et des désordres les plus variés. Ce roman a d'ailleurs été fréquemment interdit en Russie, où la censure de la dictature fonctionne toujours, en plein 21e siècle.
Ecrit il y a 20 ans, on dirait un reportage d'actualité (malgré les flash-backs).

What a good read! Great pacing as we follow the story of the hero in three parallel time spans as we edge towards a resolution. Masterly crafted and a mix of black humour and satire, written with a deep understanding of human nature. So many intriguing characters and so many relevant topics. I saw the author at a book festival almost by mistake as he was on with another author, who I had read and wanted to see. The latter failed to turn up. I was offered my money back, but decided to stay. Then I bought the book. Now I have read it and I am happy!!!! It doesn't matter if you experienced Soviet times, but it can add more poignancy if you did. Also, you don't need to be interested in politics in the Ukraine today, but it will also ring a few bells, if you are.

Γραμμένο σαν ημερολόγιο,σε πρώτο πρόσωπο, σε τρεις περιόδους της ζωής του προέδρου (η αφήγηση της κάθε περιόδου διακόπτεται ανά δύο ή τρεις σελίδες), ενώ ανασύρει τις ενδόμυχες σκέψεις του
Στην αρχή φαίνεται χαώδες, είναι άλλωστε αρκετά φλύαρο (με πλήρη περιγραφή του αν ζήτησε πάγο για το ουίσκι του, αν του έφεραν και αν όντως έβαλε), αλλά όσο προχωρά, αρχίζει ο αναγνώστης να γνωρίζει τον ήρωα, να τον κατανοεί, να έρχεται πιο κοντά του, σε σημείο να του συγχωρεί λίγο τη φλυαρία και να δένει η ιστορία σε παρελθόν, παρόν και μέλλον.
Συνολικά μου άρεσε, άλλωστε είναι ο πρώτος Ουκρανός συγγραφέας που γνωρίζω, αλλά τονίζω πως ήταν φλύαρο - κι ας του το συγχωρώ.

The President's Last Love is a satire on life in the Soviet Union, as well as life in Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR. The main character experiences all levels of society (and its corruption and banality), before becoming president of an independent Ukraine trying to find its way from under the thumb of Putin's Russia. Not funny, but satirical and informative, and quite timely.

Very well written, very entertaining, especially if familiar with Ukraine. Laughed out loud a few times. But then it kind of ends. I guess that was the point? Either way, for what it is, quite a solid read.

Andrey Kurkov is one of those writers I keep forgetting about and then re-discovering. I first encountered him work with Death And The Penguin
several years ago but since reading that and its sequel (Penguin Lost) I forgot about him until I read about him in The Complete Polysylabbic Spree, which led me to reading A Matter of Death and Life. After reading that I vowed not to forget him, but it wasn’t until I saw some of his books on display in Waterstones that I remembered my vow. I immediately bought this book and added a few more to my wishlist.
I really do not know why I keep forgetting Kurkov, I always enjoy his books. They tend to be easy to read but there is a certain strangeness to them that makes you feel like you have something to puzzle out.

I would say I prefer the Penguin books over this one, just because of the character of the penguin himself, and the main character’s relationship with him (which is probably reflected in the fact that I remember the penguin’s name, but not that of his owner). I did find I had a little confusion when switching between chapters (each of which were focused on one of 3 periods in the president’s (Bunin’s) life) and working out where I was in relation to other chapters, especially as each individual story got more complex. I also had a little trouble distinguishing the women in his life from one another, especially when they overlapped into each others time frames.
You could probably make three novellas from this book as it was like three stories in one but I kind of liked reading them alongside each other and it was clever how sometimes something from one time frame would explain something in another. However I did want some of the stories to carry on as I was interested to see how Bunin got to where he was in the last timeline.

Certainly a good read, and fairly easy, but if you have never encountered Kurkov before I would recommend Death and the Penguin as a better starting point.

En entremêlant les périodes - la jeunesse du narrateur, sa vie amoureuse, et ses inquiétudes en tant que président d'Ukraine - Kourkov ouvre une porte sur l'évolution du pays des années 80 aux années 2015. Le roman est particulièrement perspicace sur les relations russo-ukrainiennes, et plus particulièrement de l'ingérence du Kremlin. Il montre aussi cyniquement les jeux de pouvoir dans l'administration présidentielle, et la toute puissance de son chef.
Les chapitres très courts se succèdent en alternant les trois époques, rendant par moment la lecture un peu poussive. Il manque aussi un ou deux chapitres qui permettent de comprendre exactement comment le narrateur est devenu président - même si on soupçonne qu'il est une marionette choisie par les poids lourds de l'administration présidentielle. Le décor est bien planté, les personnages sont attachants mais on reste un peu sur notre faim. En ce sens, la postface de l'auteur interpelle : " Une bonne histoire n'est jamais terminée. Celle-ci ne l'est que partiellement. Si vous voulez vraiment savoir tout ce qui s'est passé et connaître la suite, écrivez à votre narrateur, écrivez moi. Je me remettrai à ma table de travail, je ressusciterai le passé et je penserai l'avenir".
