One thing about Wood's books that I love it the fact that they take off running from page 1.

I found it extremely hard to put my kindle down and to not sneakily read at work. I might be biased as Wood is my favorite Crime Thriller author but I can honestly, not find anything wrong with this book. It immersed me from the first chapter, with our beloved Scott attacked and DCI Darke missing. Kept me on the edge of my seat, speculating who, what and how. With the main character out of commission, the rest of the team really came together to try and uncover the mysteries surrounding Matilda's disappearance and with that I have to acknowledge that Wood did a fantastic job in not having an actual main character focused in this book, but rather the whole cast come into play. I was delighted to have Sian back with the team as well.

As usual, we have a stellar cliffhanger ending that grips and leaves us yanking out wondering how long we have to wait for the next book.

Thank you Netgalley and One More Chaper, HarperCollins UK for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

EXCERPT: She was in total darkness.
She stood up and held her arms out in front of her like a zombie in a cheap horror film. She took a few tentative steps forward before she hit a wall. It was cold and damp to the touch. The brick was rough. She ran her hands along it, walking slowly, fearful of what she might touch, might step in. She soon reached the end of the wall, turned and walked along the adjacent wall. It was such a small room, no bigger than a box room, no bigger than a . . . prison cell.

MY THOUGHTS: I read Below Ground in a little less than 24 hours, unable to put it down, which is pretty standard for this series. Michael Wood always hits the ground running. Below Ground is 384 pages of pure adrenaline rush.

The story-line is dark, intense and multi-layered. Not only is the team dealing with Scott's injury, Matilda's disappearance, but they have an unexpected gravesite with multiple bodies. There is no end of suspects who could be responsible for Matilda's kidnapping, but who is responsible for the bodies buried in the bush? The answer to that one was a real surprise!

It was lovely to have Sian back on the team, and a credit to Michael Woods superb writing skills to have almost the entire book carry on without Matilda and to not lose impetus or interest. If anything, this is the best of the series yet! There is a little romance happening to soften the harshness of the investigation, and a few things we have still to learn about one of the team members. A new character is introduced at the beginning of the book, and although we don't see much of him in the rest of the book, I have a feeling he is going to be important in the future.

Although this is a series, Below Ground is easily read as a stand-alone, as Michael Wood eloquently and seamlessly fills in what back-story is required. However, I'm warning you, once you've read Below Ground you will be wanting to go back and read the earlier books in the series.

Below Ground ends on a cliffhanger. I hope Michael Wood is hard at work on #12, because I can't wait to get my hands on it.

DCI Matilda Darke #11

Why is Steve Harrison so obsessed with Matilda Darke? This is a continuous theme from previous books in this series. However, rest assured, the author does a good job in filling in the gaps if you are a first time reader to this excellent series. It’s mid January 2021 and Donal Youngblood, a Home Office pathologist in South Yorkshire is exhausted. It’s a challenging job at the best of times but it has been worsened by the Covid pandemic. Donal is dating DS Scott Andrews of the Homicide and Major Crime Unit led by Matilda Darke. He sets off to meet Scott at his flat at Matilda’s property, and what he finds there freezes his blood and that of the South Yorkshire team. This is just the start of yet another nightmare and the novel packs a punch or two right from the start.

First of all, a big shout out for the terrific team of characters. Michael Wood has created here, and I just pick up where I leave off from book 10. They’re all so well crafted, they feel authentic, each with their own personality quirks, and in this one they are yet again challenged to the extreme. This must be the unluckiest police unit ever. They just recover from one major incident when they’re socked with another, often with Steve Harrison featuring somewhere and somehow.

This is a dark, bleak, intense and multilayered storyline, with several challenging investigative strands to keep you glued to the plot with members of the team facing huge personal issues and obstacles alongside masterful manipulation. The plot is fast paced as it twists, turns and barrels its way through tension fuelled and suspenseful scenes in well chosen locations, which highlight the dilemmas being faced.

It’s well written and at times it certainly pulls on the emotional heartstrings as these characters feel like old friends. The dialogue is good, I like the occasional well placed humour which helps the hold your breath tension. There are some good descriptions so you feel as if you are present in the scenes and not just a passive observer. It’s the usual Yorkshire grit and as per usual, Mr Wood leaves you with a cliffhanger. I do so hope that number 12 is being drafted as I write this!!

This is an absolutely cracking series that I have loved from the very start and one which the author continues to deliver. If you like police procedurals with many thriller elements, you’ll enjoy these books.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins, OneMoreChapter for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

The stakes are high in Below Ground, the gripping and pulse pounding 11th installment in the addictive DCI Matilda Darke series!!!!! I am reading this one out of order but that did not affect my enjoyment at all! As with the other books in this series, I found Below Ground to be wonderfully written, brilliantly paced, well thought out, and addictive. I did not want to put this book done as Matilda's team goes into high gear trying to find Matilda after she has been kidnapped. But don't count Matilda out, while kidnapped, she is also trying to figure out what is going on and who is behind her kidnapping!

Whew! This one had my pulse amped out and my interest piqued. I am a HUGE fan of this series and Michael Wood never disappoints! This book is full of tension, danger, twists, and suspense. I love the DCI team, their banter, how they work together and even their little spats. I had my fingers crossed the entire book for the wellbeing of both Matilda and Scott - who was attacked in Matilda's home.

Another thrilling, jaw dropping and shocking book in the series! If you have not read this series, you are seriously missing out!

Gripping, tense, shocking, addictive, and hard to put down!!!!

When I saw all the 5 star reviews for this crime thriller I thought it would be right up my street and I couldn’t wait to read it. Once I’d started I couldn’t wait to finish it. I don’t mean to be unkind … but it was ridiculous. How many completely disastrous and over-the-top things can happen to the members of such a small police team? We have a DS whose husband has been a serial killer for 25 years, a DC who is now in a wheelchair for the rest of her life after a car accident involving the aforementioned serial killer, an ex-policeman who is also a multiple killer, a DI who hanged himself in DCI Darke’s house because she got the job and not him, and then we have poor old DS Scott. He was severely stabbed at the beginning of the book. Severely. There was a huge amount of blood, he was unconscious, his pulse was barely registering, he was cold and unresponsive, it was touch and go, and he was rushed into hospital for emergency surgery. Relatives and colleagues gathered at the hospital in floods of tears waiting for news. Oh I forgot to add, two days later he was back at work. I think I’ll leave it at that! Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read and review this book and I’m sorry that it’s one that I definitely won’t be recommending.

It is a huge testament to the character development, the author has put into the team, over the years that you can take the main character, pretty much out of the book. Without weakening the plot.

Over the years, Matilda has made a lot of enemies who could be potential kidnappers. The team must sift through all these. Plus investigate a body found inside an abandoned car in the woods.

If you are a first-time reader to this series, don’t worry the author fills in the gaps, succinctly. I pretty much guarantee you will be back reading the series after this one,

In true Michael Woods style, this a dark, intense storyline with many layers and multiple investigations that will keep you turning the pages and pinned to your seat, as the plot twists and turns. This is another cracking instalment to this series I sincerely hope book 12 is not far away, especially with that cliff hanger.

Highly recommended. Firstly, I would like to thank netgalley and HarperCollins uk one more chapter and the fantastic author Michael wood for an early copy of his book.

I wondered how this book was going to work if the main character played a quite small, but central, role in the book. If anything this book showed me how strong the other characters in the series are, as they set off and try and find a kidnapped Matilda Darke. The author did a superb job of pulling this off, and this is as greatly enjoyable as all the other books in the series.

This book sets off at a hundred miles an hour and never really lets off from this pace. As is typical of Michael Wood books there is great characterisation, a strong and highly thought out plot, great dialogue between characters and tension a plenty. As with his previous books in the series you never know if this is going to be the scene that sees a character’s demise! You live on your nerves as a Michael Wood fan.

Along with Matilda’s kidnapping we also have an evolving murder scene in the woods around Sheffield. I loved how these storylines were woven together, and the storylines in the book did lead to a big shock that left some of the characters reeling - but would you expect, or want, anything less from Michael Wood!

I loved how this book brought a few storylines from previous books together, especially as they were searching for people who might have a grudge against Matilda. Obviously those that have been following will know that is a big list! I did work out the context and who was behind the kidnapping around midway through the book, but that definitely did not make it any less enjoyable. The superb ending had my heart racing.

Overall another 5 star book from Michael Wood, I don’t know how he does it. This is my favourite detective series out there at the moment, and it has tough competition from other high quality detective series. If you haven’t read this series, why ever not, and I would strongly urge you to correct that straight away. It can be read as a standalone, but you will get so much more from the series if you read them in order.

Now I just have to impatiently await the next book in the series because as those that’s know the series would expect it was left on a cliffhanger note. Not fair Michael! But bravo Michael on another hit.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am a huge fan of this series but this episode did not work for me.

It was fast and furious with the regular cast of characters behaving true to form. I just found this episode, whilst tense and page turning, felt less credible than the previous more detection based stories. Intelligent, trained officers behaving in daft ways even when under threat.

The problem, for me, lay in a continuing story thread which I think has been stretched out of shape and is now more caricature than lifelike. I think this story thread has reached the end of its natural life and that the investigation team could get their teeth into something new.

Audiobook Review:
Below Ground (DCI Matilda Darke #11) by Michael Wood
Narrated by Stephanie Beattie
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Synopsis:
A MISSING DETECTIVE
DCI Matilda Darke has been kidnapped and her nemesis, Steve Harrison appears to be behind it, but he’s currently in Wakefield Prison and spends twenty-three hours a day in his cell.

A SERIAL KILLER WITH A VENGEANCE
As Matilda’s team race to find her, a body is found found on the outskirts of Sheffield. With forensics scouring the woodland for clues, the body count rises.

A RACE AGAINST TIME
Meanwhile, the search intensifies for the DCI when a video of her kidnapping is leaked to the media. As she tries to uncover what's led to her captivity, she’s about to find out how much danger she’s truly in.

Review:
I'm a huge fan of Michael Wood's writing, so a new Matilda Darke novel is a real treat. That being said, much like anyone else whose work I admire, I'll always honestly review rather than merely pay lip service.
This time, the case revolves around Matilda's kidnap, so there's a lot of focus on the other members of her team, which is really refreshing; it's good to hear a little more from them.
Although this is book 11 in the series, some background is provided, so if you're new to the author, it can work well as an introduction without first reading the other 10.
The writing is superb, as always, and shot through with plenty of shocks. Stephanie Beattie's narration works well too, and in typical Michael Wood style, not everything is neatly sewn up at the final hurdle. Let's hope book 12 will soon be forthcoming. No pressure!

Matilda has only a small part in this story this time around, because she’s been kidnapped. So we definitely see how her team can work without her, while they try to find her & also investigate another case. Great plot & I enjoyed seeing the team in a different capacity. However…..can we move on from a certain role that keeps recurring? I don’t like to do spoilers, so I won’t say exactly what it is, but I would like for someone/something different in the next books.

Below Ground is the eleventh instalment in the DCI Matilda Darke series. If you have read any of the books in the series, you will know to ‘expect the unexpected’. Wood’s is not averse to killing off much loved characters without a hint of regret. Personally, that’s one reason I love this series, as you are never sure what shocks the author has in store for the reader. Below Ground kicks off at a breathtaking pace. Maltida has been kidnapped and her nemesis, Steve Harrison, appears to be the number one suspect. But how can someone who is currently in the Supermax of Wakefield Prison be responsible? And so begins a cracking, and unpredictable read.

Matilda kidnapping means she plays a much smaller part in Below Ground, which is a brave move on woods part. But he’s created such a fantastic supporting cast with a strong storyline, readers will forgive him for locking Matilda away! Another strength of this series is Matilda’s and her team. It sounds cliched but they feel like old friends. Through the series you’ve shared their losses, heartbreak, grief and trauma. Wood’s doesn’t give any of the team an easy ride, that’s for sure. Whoever is behind Matilda’s kidnapping is a master of manipulation. They torment and taunt the team at every given opportunity, pushing each one to the brink.

Matilda has made a lot of enemies during her career, so the list of suspects is long. I liked how wood incorporates threads and potential suspects from previous books. As if the team doesn’t have enough to deal with, a body is found in an abandoned car on the outskirts of Sheffield. It soon becomes apparent that the two unrelated investigations have far more in common than first thought.

The team’s determination to bring Matilda home is hampered at every turn. As the plot progresses, there’s an intense sense of foreboding that literally had me on the edge of my seat. Michael Wood has the most devious, twisted mind. Not only has he written a fantastic read, but he ends the book on a shocking note and one that left me reeling! In case you haven’t already guessed, I absolutely loved Below Ground. If you love a dark crime series, they don’t come any darker than this outstanding series. Highly recommended.

✨My Thoughts✨

I’ll try and leave this spoiler free because I hate it when you look at reviews and it spoils the book for the reader.

I started this series back in 2021 when i read the first 8 books in a week because I was that OBSESSED!.

Now we’re onto book 11 and after THAT cliffhanger in book 10 it didn’t bode well for Matilda and Scott.

Matilda has been kidnapped and Scott has been seriously injured but Matilda’s team have no idea what happened to her or who took her? Expect that Matilda’s Nemesis Steve Harrison is involved but how?.

What a shocking story this was, it was so fast paced I could hardly keep up, the shocks are relentless and you don’t get a break until the very page.

Michael is a master storyteller and every book in this series is as good as the last, I can’t wait for the next in series and I hope it continues for a long time to come.

Below Ground is an I can't put it down, don't talk to me until I am finished read all the while as you are holding your breath and praying they find Matilda alive.

I don't want to say much (and my review could not possibly do justice to the series or the book) but I will say expect the unexpected.

Michael Wood is a master at that premise.

Then there is the ending that leaves you turning the page thinking please don't end the book here.

Highly recommend Below Ground and the entire series. Matlida Darke is the at the top of my favourite series.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for a heart pounding read.

WOW!!! This story deserves way more than five stars. It was that good. But then again, I wouldn't expect anything less from the master that is Michael Wood.

Whose no holds barred writing style, characters and shocking twists make this a must read series.

And I may joke every time that if certain characters die, I'll never read a Matilda Darke book again. But let's be honest, that's never going to happen.

Although my loyalty to Matilda and Michael was severely tested this time.

As DS Scott Andrews is found stabbed and left for dead at the home of DCI Matilda Darke and Matilda is no where to be seen.

And as a shocked HMCU team begin to question what could've happened and whether Matilda is alive or dead. The Chief Constable asks whether it's possible Matilda is responsible and has fled the scene.

However, those that know Matilda best including Pat, Sian and Adele are sure Matilda would never harm anyone, especially Scott and that something terrible has to have happened.

And although there are a lot of people who would like to see Matilda dead. Adele is quick to point to Steve Harrison aka The Hangman. Whose currently on the Supermax wing at Wakefield Prison.

But how would Steve have orchestrated this latest attempt on Matilda's life?

And more importantly, where is Matilda?

And as the team race to get the answers. They also deal with a murder investigation that brings Sian and her serial killer husband face to face.

And it's fair to say this may just be their toughest investigation yet! And with a massacre and serial killers galore that's really saying something.

And no one is coming out of this unscathed.

And with such a gripping storyline and Michael's signature shocks and surprises. I was hooked from start to finish, and I can't wait for book 12. But thank god it's not out for a little while. As I'm going to need the time to recover and you will too!

I'd one thousand percent recommend BELOW GROUND and the series to all. And if you've not read it yet, what are you waiting for? Seriously, it's the BEST!!!

My thanks to One More Chapter for the opportunity to read an early copy of Below Ground. 😊

I am a HUGE fan of the DCI Matilda Darke series by Michael Wood. Below Ground is the eleventh book and things just don’t seem to be getting any better for the beleaguered South Yorkshire Homicide and Major Crime Unit (HMCU). But where would be the fun in that anyway? One of the things I love the most about this series (apart from the fact that the core cast of characters feel like old friends) is that the author has no fear in pushing his characters to their absolute limit (and sometimes beyond!). This latest instalment is no different.

DCI Matilda Darke is missing. Her long standing nemesis, Steve Harrison, looks to be behind the kidnapping but he’d rather die than help the rest of the HMCU find her. He’ll just enjoy taunting the team from the supermax wing of Wakefield Prison instead. Elsewhere, a body is found in the boot of a car on the outskirts of Sheffield. Shortly after the team discover who the remains belong to, a second body is found. Then a third. Stretched to the limit and without their leader, it’s down to HMCU to solve the murders which all seem strangely linked, and find Matilda before it’s too late…

Below Ground is a thrilling race against time novel with clever plotting and twists and turns galore. DCI Matilda Darke is pretty much absent from proceedings this time around. We do get to see things from her point of view and watch as the situation she’s in becomes frighteningly clear to her. But these chapters are few and far between which I thought added to the tension. Below Ground focuses more on the secondary supporting cast of characters with DI Christian Brady taking the lead in the investigation and the return to the force of favourite, DS Sian Robinson. There is a lot going on with DS Scott Andrews, and DCs Zofia Nowak, Tom Simpson and Finn Cotton too. As well as the smaller side characters such as Donal Youngblood. I felt all of the characters, main or supporting, evolved in this latest book and I enjoyed seeing their stories develop.

Would I recommend this book? I would, yes. Below Ground was a gripping, tense race against time to save Matilda Darke and I was fully immersed in the story from the get-go. I really like Wood’s characters but I’m always nervous about getting too attached to any of them as you never know how long they’ll be part of the series! The Sheffield setting once again was vivid and came to life on the page. The menace and threat brought to proceedings by the return of Steve Harrison was wonderful and I loved how he played the team from behind bars. He’s a truly horrible, despicable character and he’s brought to life so well by the author. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish but the ending was superb and I was teetering on the edge of my seat. It felt like a movie was playing out before my eyes with the author cutting from one tense scene to the next, each situation intensifying a little more every time. This is the eleventh book in the series and I want to say you could read it as a standalone because the author provides a lot of background information (which I found useful myself and I’ve read all but one of the series!) but I think it’s better read in order. A great addition to a favourite series and I am very much looking forward to seeing what befalls the HMCU next (after seeing a recent comment from the author on Facebook, I have to admit I’m nervous for them!). Tense, gripping and eminently readable. Recommended.

I’m now up to date with the books in this series and as much as I enjoyed this I’m still wondering where the series will go from here. This latest instalment sees Matilda in the thick of it as she is snatched. This means the team are doing their utmost to find her without alerting the media.

In addition they get a case when a body is found which as usual is never just one thing…that one body turns to two and then three. There is plenty going on to keep the reader interested and it made a pleasant change to read about Matilda being on the other side of the fence and seeing what she does to utilise her survival instinct.

Overall another good read I’m just confused about where this series will go. Sometimes I think some storylines are better off wrapped up and finished with as there are only so many times it can be reused.

Oh, my... This ended with another, horrible cliffhanger. What am I to do with myself now??

So many (too many!) things are happening to Matilda's poor team!
I would probably be more than ready for retirement after only one week of their emotional stress levels. Their tenacity is both impressive and supernatural. 😂

While this book clearly proves that a DCI Matilda Darke novel doesn't actually have to contain a whole lot of Matilda Darke points of views to still be kickass good and thrilling - I still think it had just a bit too little Matilda in it.

I hope she'll be back as the lead character in the next instalment - and that she keeps on surviving, dammit! 😆

This is the first Matilda Darke novel I have read and my first reaction was, when is she going to make an appearance? In fact she hardly turns up as she is kidnapped and her colleagues struggle to find her.
You have to suspend belief at times as you ask the question, how can so many unfortunate things happen to a small close knit group of crime solving individuals?
Still this fast moving police procedural keeps the reader entertained and the novel does end on a cliff hanger and I guess this happens in other Darke books in the series as there are interconnections to other crimes all over the place.
If this wasn't so fast paced it could easily be a DCI Banks book without Banks.

When I think this series can't get better, I read the next book and am proven wrong. Now that I've caught up with the series, I must wait until October 25, 2024, when Last One Left Alive comes out. And I'm not a patient person!

DS Scott Andrews is found on the floor of Matilda Darke's house, bleeding from a stab wound, and Matilda is nowhere to be seen. Wanting to keep her kidnapping from the press and with few clues, the team tries to find her - their only clue: serial killer Steve Harrison may again be pulling strings from behind bars. Meanwhile, a skeletonized body is found in the woods, and then another, and another. The team is at odds trying to solve these old murders while still looking for Matilda. As time passes without clues, the possibility of not finding Matilda alive looms.

This is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat read. Even though Matilda is the main protagonist, Wood's penchant for killing off characters left me wondering if she would survive her ordeal. Some surprises and twists kept me reading this dark police procedural. 5/5 stars.

Every time I open up the latest Matilda Darke book I’m talking to the author, Michael Wood, in my head, telling him upfront that I am sorry, but there’s no way you can have written a better book than the previous one. It’s simply not possible. It’s all downhill from here. Every time this insanely gifted author proves me wrong. Every time. How does he do it?

This time the book is not following Matilda and her moves that much, instead it’s focusing on her team, her nemesis, and her past. Matilda has disappeared, and her unconscious, stabbed friend and colleague is the only one who knows what has happened. Not quite though, her nemesis knows what’s going on, but he’s in prison and has pretty much no contact with anyone. This is a tricky case for the team.

I love how the team works together, and I’ve grown to love this team. They have gone through so much sorrow, and Michael Wood is most definitely not giving them a break. The writing is superb, character growth is perfection, the story is mind blowing, and it all melts together like a perfect sundae on a Sunday afternoon. It has the scoops of ice cream, sauce, whipped cream, sprinkles, and the most beautiful cherry on top. Yes, the cherry is the cliffhanger ending, and I hope Michael Wood understands it’s highly critical that he spends around 20 hours a day writing the next book in the series, so that I get to read is as soon as possible!

One of the best books ever, in one of the best series ever! It is THAT good!

DCI Matilda Darke has been kidnapped, and one of her colleagues severely injured. It’s now down to DI Ben Hales, DS Sian Robinson and the team to find her, but with no leads, they have hit a dead end. Serial killer and former police officer Steve Harrison is the likely mastermind behind it all, with his genuine hatred and obsession with Matilda still apparent, but how? Locked up in the supermax wing of Wakefield prison for 23 hours a day it’s impossible that he is behind her disappearance…or is it? The team are stretched, as there was also a body discovered in the boot of a car near a forest on the outskirts of the city which looks to be the workings of a serial killer. As the bodies start to pile up, MIT have to investigate the murders as well as find their boss. Can they find Matilda and the serial killer before it’s too late?

OH MY GOODNESS MICHAEL!!! I absolutely loved this instalment of the series! I went through every single emotion, had a million melt downs and was still reeling when I got to the end of the book! I couldn’t stop reading! And what an ending!! I won’t say too much as I don’t want to spoil it for others but Michael you are such a fantastic and brilliant writer, the king of shock factors galore! It literally is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get, but you can bet it will be chilling and brilliant in equal measures! One of if not my favourite author, I look forward to each and every one of your books!

I'm not going to lie - if I was Matilda Darke, or even just one of her team - I'd be thinking of a career change right about now. It's fair to say that Michael Wood has put them through the ringer over the course of the past few months and the emotional, and physical, toll on them is becoming more and more pronounced with every case. Heck, these books are so fraught with tension and danger, I think they are giving me palpitations.

Now, if you are coming to this as. Matilda Darke newbie, you probably need to step away and read the earlier books first. There are some very key elements of this story that link to earlier novels and it is impossible to read the book without major spoilers. Whilst this is, in theory, a story in its own right, it comes as a direct result of the prior books finale, and with links to earlier cases and perpetrators which will have more meaning to you if you know all that has come before. You have been warned.

This is a book packed with mystery and a lot of unanswered questions. With a missing person investigation taking the attention of the majority of the team - the missing person in question just happening to be their boss, Matilda - they are also faced with a very grim discovery making, albeit one with perhaps a little less time sensitive implications for its victims. The discovery of a body in the boot of an abandoned car leads to all manner of questions, some of which it is clear certain people will not want answered. It's a case that creates an unexpected kind of jeopardy and the risks that they are facing grow exponentially with each new discovery.

I really like the characters that Michael Wood has created in this series. Its safe to say that fans of the books have been hit as emotionally over the course of the eleven books as any of the beloved folk we are reading about. The books can be dark, but with a nice balance of light moments too as the camaraderie amongst the team often pulls them through. Admittedly, those moments of light have been getting harder to see, no more than pin pricks on some occasions, but they are there, and that bond and that sense of family, both genetic and extended, makes the series a joy to read. If we didn't care so much, I'm not sure the impact would be as great, but Michael Wood has added such warmth and authenticity to his team, as well as loathsomeness and cruelty to his adversaries, that I find myself hooked every single time. Whether it's to see how low certain folk can go, or just see them get their comeuppance, I'm always rewarded with a sorry that makes the spine tingle and often draws me to the edge of my seat.

The pacing in this book is spot on, and the balance between the professional and personal just right too. We are privy not only to the two investigations, but Matilda's point of view as a victim, as well as having direct access to one of the series most venomous characters as he seeks one final revenge on Matilda. I liked the way the author has presented his story, how he uses a particular narrative style to convey the hatred they are harbouring towards the team, but especially Matilda. But even though we 'think' we know everything that is going on, the author manages to pull the wool over our eyes, not just once, but repeatedly, drawing me back to my earlier comment of considering new career choices. There have to be some out there that are better for their health and well being!

That said, I'm kind of hoping they stick with it as I am still loving this series as much now as I did when I first met Matilda and co. Things may have changed dramatically over the course of the eleven books, but they are as hard hitting and engrossing now as they ever were. Be warned though - I think Mr Wood should be given the title of 'King of the Cliffhanger'. If you wanted a nice tidy ending to this story arc ... well. We don't always get what we want, do we. Just deserts? Yes, kind of. Uncertainty, shock and a fraught reader until I can get my mitts on books twelve - absolutely! And I wouldn't have it any other way. Definitely recommended.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this eARC.

Books by this author should come with health warnings. Read at your own risk. I feel like I've gone through every single emotion reading this book which, dare I say, is the best book so far in the Matilda Darke series and one of my top reads this year.

Michael Wood has raised the bar yet again and wrote a cracker of a read here. Matilda is missing and her team are frantically trying to find her and when they realise a past character may have had a hand in her disappearance they fear the worst. They also investigate a body found in the boot of a car that links to historic cases with everyone believing they know who is responsible - are they right though?

Below Ground hits the ground running right from the start and I was immediately drawn into the story. If Michael Wood wants to grab his readers attention straight away then he achieves that here. I loved seeing the team back together again, particularly Sian who has a difficult and emotional time and I really felt for her. Surprisingly Matilda has very little presence in the book as the focus is more on her team and their investigations. This really works though, and very much suits the story. There are references to previous characters and events and some return (one who I loathed) which created so much tension and suspense in the story. I think the plot line is superb, and loved that some threads from previous books which you don't think much of at the time pop up here with great effect.

Michael Wood has written a brilliant book here. It flows really well and is a pleasure to read. It quickly become one of those moreish reads with cliff hanger chapter endings that just I loved and had to carry on reading to know more. I was so glad to see a certain person get their comeuppance and the doubts I had about another character I couldn't take to or like were proved right. The last quarter of the book is a fast paced, thrilling read with a hell of a lot going on that brings the story to its end, with most threads tied up. And the ending ....I dread to think what the author has up his sleeve for the next book and will definitely be wanting to find out! This is one of the best police procedurals I've read this year and I'd recommend it. If you're new to this author I'd recommend you read the books from the beginning and you're in for a real treat. I loved everything about this book and can't fault it at all.
