BASED ON THE HIT ANIME FILM! An unexplained series of suicides among skill users sends the Armed Detective Agency on a search for a man who may be connected. But when the same phenomenon descends upon Yokohama, they’ll have to fight for their lives if they want a chance to reach the truth and save the city from certain destruction!
22.12.22: my first time reading the official translation !!! the book is so pretty. pretty much exactly the same as the movie, which is slightly different from the novel- panel by panel a lot of it is similar which is quite sad imo. the scene were ango confronts dazai is different but that’s the one bit i wish they wouldn’t change because dazai saying “do you really think you could stop me” in the anime was so cool and here it’s cheesy T.T
i’ve seen the movie several times i love them sm.
i love the manga style so much and love the way bsd uses different manga styles and illustrators it’s so FUNNN kuouka and oda and chuuya and tanizaki especially look super cool in this style
So far it seems to be a pretty faithful adaptation of the Dead Apple movie, with the exception of that scene where Ango confronts Dazai and Dazai does that whole dramatic fog flourish, which I can’t really remember happening in the original. Other than that, it’s...basically the same. Not sure what else to add.
The manga is just like the Dead Apple movie, pretty much scene for scene, just some of the dialogue is worded differently. I remember loving the movie's action and suspense and I'm so glad this manga still embodies the same feelings. The art is really good and the characters still feel the same as they do in the original manga. I can't wait to see more of my beloved Chuuya in the next volume!
This book was OK. The premise isn’t my favorite out of all the spinoffs of Bungo but it was nice. Having everything go so wrong so fast is a nice change of pace where it started off as any other day and the detective agency and went straight into madness. I look forward to seeing how the story develops especially with the abandoned building piqued my interest. So we shall see!
The anime that this covers was an OVA so this is a bit of a money grab, especially considering how thin this volume was. That being said, it’s still a solid volume.
The book is so similar to the movie that I was pretty bored, especially since there was no Akutagawa. The story is also very unfinished, so it SHOULD feel like a cliffhanger, but I already know the ending.
Favorite character: Chuuya
Kunikida is pretty funny in this book as well, though.
“I must defeat myself. Just like I’ve always done.”
I'm quite picky about the manga I read, but this one I loved even though I'm left with more questions than answers, but in the good way (if that makes sense). I want to know more about Dazai and his past, his dead lover, and what was the base for the twisting of his good persona to bad. I both saw it coming and didn't see his evil nature; I saw it because that would be one hell of a twist, but I didn't see it coming because I went into this blind and was just enjoying the literary ride this manga took me on, and I'm not going to get off this ride until I finish the entire series. Yes, it's a binge-worthy series, and I know my friends would love this sort of thing, so it's definitely worth recommending. The concept of suicide, assisted suicide, or blackmail suicide, are always touchy subjects for me because of my past, but I've moved on from suicidal depression and thought hard on the concept of this using-powers-against-you suicide all formed by Dazai being bitter about something I don’t completely understand yet. Moving on, I try not to watch the anime before I read the manga, and though that was the case here, I find myself in an "oh, cool" moment with the anime having come out prior to the manga. If the quality of the anime is just as fascinating as this manga has been, I'm in for a real treat! Excuse me while I reread this manga series in two hours and then binge-watch the entire anime!
As I continue to review more mystery manga from YenPress, I recently finished Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple Vol. 1 which was released in August of 2022.This is based on the hit anime film with the original story by Bungo Stray Dogs DA Partners. Artwork by Gun_Zi.

This is another series which is a supernatural/mystery combination. Skill users are people with powers. This was a very short volume that left me on the edge of my seat for the next one. Volumes 2 and 3 came out this year, and there appear to be other stories out there with these same characters. I will say that this one was a little more confusing to me than most are, but it might work better if you can read them one right after the other. If you enjoy this kind of combination with your manga, I recommend checking out Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple, but if I were you, I would get all 3 volumes at once so you can keep going!
chapter 1 "if it was a girl i'd have died with her" huh good point why didn't dazai kill himself with oda. any time we go to that damn lupin bar i wanna tear my hair out (in a negative way). fun question is how did dazai even meet both shibusawa and fyodor before the events of the main story. gun to my head i would never have guessed ango was 26. fyodor calling us plebians like pls no i'm a star.
chapter 2 i never understand why they shoot at their skill when guns never affected them in the first place.
chapter 3 always thought it hilarious how nobody in yokohama cares that there's this menacing evil black tower called "skull fortress" in the middle of their city.
I found online that it's better to read the Dead Apple storyline before volume 10 of the main plot. I agree with that so far.
Dead Apple is a great side story, and I really liked the movie. The characters have their abilities taken away, and to get them back, they need to defeat the 'abilities' and the person who is taking them away.
I am giving this volume four stars only because I'm disappointed the story was split into 3 separate volumes. It should have been made into an omnibus, just a thick volume, or even just two volumes. Volume 1 is sooooo short, and it could have been meshed with another volume to make it worth the price.
Skill users are mysteriously committing suicide when a mysterious fog rolls in so the agency gets involved. The entire thing is actually so creepy and the vibe of the city being abandoned except for skill users that are getting attacked by their own skills was gold.
Sometimes I forget they are called the ARMED Detective Agency and then I get reminded so hard. Like damn okay armed more like armory !!
Good to know my unflinching loyalty to Dazai holds strong like yeah he's being sus but I'm sure he has his reasons and even if he doesn't, I forgive him.
The art is so good, everyone looks extra good in this style.
Kocham Ode i Dazaia. 5/5 ofc.

This was honestly the best book/manga that I read this year. I love how the characters are the same but also kinda different from the original BSD and I love love love Dazai and his 'partner in crime' from this manga. Can't wait to read the next chapters honestly. Fully recommend if you've read a bit of the BSD series(or even if you haven't, but i think it would be harder to understand what's happening and learn the characters pretty well, for that i recommend the original BSD series).
I love the Dead Apple story. But honestly this isn’t worth the price of the book. I love seeing the story in a third medium but I don’t understand why it isn’t just one volume. Like to charge $17 CAD for a 125 manga that has no original content is absurd to me. I think I read it in 15 minutes.
If they want to charge that much this should’ve been one volume. Maybe two if you want to push it. If you can borrow it I would recommend it but don’t waste your own money.
I don't think there are enough instances of worlds like this (where people have a quirk/ability/gift) having to FIGHT that part of themselves. It's such a cool concept, I love it. Like, are you stronger then yourself? Can you OUTSMART yourself?
I randomly found both first and second volume at the bookstore and grobbled them with me because it's BSD's. What do i say? It's pretty much the same as the movie and the Light Novel but then in manga version. I really loved the scene of Dazai being at Oda's grave paying his respects. That's basically why this volume got 5 stars in the first place.
disclaimer: i saw the movie serval times before i read the manga⚠️
i love this whole arc so much, the cliffhanger with chuuya has me kicking my feet and twirling my hair hehe 🤭 but anyways the manga isn’t as eerie feeling as the movie but it’s still amazing i love this series. can’t wait for volume #2!!
