This book introduces the reader to many of the famous patriots during the Revolutionary War including both very famous, little knowns, as well as some female patriots. Each patriot is introduced with a short biography and then more detailed information regarding their role both before, during, and after the Revolution. Each biography is only 3 to 4 pages long. I found many of the tidbits included in each biography very intriguing especially in those patriots with whom I was not familiar.

The biographies are followed by some short focus topics connected to the Revolutionary War: African American Patriots, Jewish American Patriots, Drummers and Fifers, The Declaration of Indpendence, The Culper Ring, "The Star Spangled Banner," The Purple Heart, The Constituion, and Publius. These were quite interesting as their was much back history that was very informative.

This book is probably written on a 4th to 6th grade level. I think students of that age who have an interest in history would really enjoy it. Although it is repetitive in spots, it would be great to use in small pieces with a group of students or could even be used for group study of individuals involved in or topics related to the Revolutionary War. As an adult, I enjoyed learning more about the Revolutionary War patriots.

This contained interesting info on some of the USA's most illustrious personages. The chapters were very short and quite limited. This is more of a reference for short, quick information than any scholarly treatment of famous men and women in our history.

The other day I realized that I have about a month to prepare a discussion of women in American history and, of course, I haven't even gotten started. So in running frantically through the library grabbing books to use for reference, this book made it to check-out. While each of the patriots profiled were informative and interesting, they were also brief. However, on the plus side, there were sources that could be used for further reading included at the end of the book which I really appreciated. Having said that, the best part of this book was the inclusion of lesser known patriots. While George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Paul Revere and the rest of the "big boys" were included, some of the most interesting patriots were people who usually don't get included in a basic U.S. history course. Patriots like Sybil Ludington, Charles Thomson, Robert Morris, Mary Katherine Goddard, Bernardo de Galvez and John Trumbull need to be more widely celebrated and recognized for their contributions to the American experience. Kudos to the author for making their stories more accessible to the general public.

I loved reading about extraordinary patriots. Some well-known, some little known, and some unknown to me who exhibited extraordinary patriotism at a crucial moment in our history. Their outstanding contributions and sacrifices for our country’s freedoms are revealed in writing that appeals to teenagers and adults alike. This book is beautifully written and full of facts. The author’s definition of an extraordinary patriot tells it all: “A person who cared more about establishing and sustaining a free and independent country in America than he or she cared about his or her comfort, safety, property, or life.” I’ve long been a fan of this author and she proves once again why she is so popular.

This book was very interesting. However, I wish I had not read the Kindle version. Some of the stuff was missing (like the entire list of the signers of the Declaration of Independence). Some of the dates were wrong. At the beginning of a couple of chapters there was a 20 year descrepancy between years things occurred. It was probably just editing,but if this were ever used in a classroom, those dates need to be right on. Other than that, this was a very neat read.

Overall, I liked to book. However, it was definitely aimed at younger readers. The authors felt the need to explain what terms such as Ratified mean. I also felt that the bibliographies on the patriots were too short and I would have liked to have read more on the lesser knowns and not those who are covered in every basic American History Course.

What a great book. So many wonderful patriots I never knew about. I think everyone should read this book, especially young kids. It's a great guide because they are mini-bios, between 2-3 pages each about their contribution to our nation. So interesting.

Good synopsis of early American history

This book offered a good variety of patriots. I would recommend it as a springboard for more in depth studies is early American history.
