DNF 30%

I did not like this book and gave up trying to read it by the 30% mark. The first part of it was tedious because of the way it was written, but it got better after the girl was summoned. But then the main character‘s class or whatever was so broken. He could analyze something, and edit the name/description of it, and it would become what he changed it to. Running out of food? Oh, no problem. He’ll just edit this piece of paper so it becomes a steak. Mean teacher? No worries, he’ll just edit her so she’s a nice kindergarten teacher instead.

This YA fantasy LitRPG skewed a little younger than I was anticipating when I picked up the book but it was still a solid, if simplistic, entry to the genre.

We followed 15 year old high school outcast Melvin Murphy as he “awakened” one day while at school. Awakened basically meant he learned the world worked on what was basically a LitRPG fantasy system that most people, except the awakened, could not access. Melvin ended up with a cool class that let him manipulate objects and even other people! Melvin’s special class was the best bit of this story.

The first thing Melvin did was accidentally summon a young female pyromancer from another world when he was trying to summon a Merlin type wizard to teach him how to use magic! It sparked a quest to learn more about magic to help find a way to get his new companion back to her own world.

It was a story aimed at the younger end of the YA market so ended up being pretty tame and simplistic in style but for all that it was an enjoyable enough tale and the lead characters were easy enough to root for despite occasionally being bratty teens.

All in all a fairly average younger skewing YA fantasy tale in the LitRPG genre.

Rating: 3 stars.

Audio Note: I feel like Nathan Agin did a decent job with the audio.

what a. surprise

I’ve been reading litrpg for a while now and to discover a book like this that has such few reviews seems magical.

Characters have their own voices and act in ways appropriate to their personalities - with the probable exception of a much too nice spoiled brat.

The magic is different but their is a tendency for the MC’s power to be too OP. Making for events to fall to much in his favor without too much effort.

I’d still like to see how it turns out though as it is a cut above what passes for good in the genre.

I just finished listening to this story and I was immediately sucked into the story ARC where it quickly became one of my top favorite reads.
Melvin, the MC, discovered that he had "awakened" and it was just like a blindfold had just been ripped off, during the night. Where he Discovered a magical world. And the stats of "muggles" 😆 all sat at level 1, and as a newly awakened individual he was at level 2. He found another awakened at school, the Head Librarian and she quickly became his friend and confidant.
So grab this book to follow Melvin's exploits as the story unfolds around the him. Where Melvin found that he had to always think outside the box if he wanted to save himself, his friends, and family too. It's a good thing that he could think fast.
Grab the audiobook because Nathan Agin has a story to tell you!

A Great Read

Kos Play has produced a fantastic story with brilliant world building. A brilliant introduction to what I can only hope is a long and regular releasing series.

A good book for overpowered MC Lovers

I enjoyed this series. Overpowered MC stories aren't my favorite as they require a solid background, characters, and plot to carry the book. Thankfully this one does meet the expectations. The MC is growing into his powers and I'm excited for the second installment. Everyone loves the academy arch.

grows nicely

I wasn’t thrilled with the beginning, but it grew on me. To the point where I just kept reading right through the end

YA appropriate. Male MC with a strong female secondary character.

I’m going to continue reading the series. It’s worth the time.

Delightful

Cover art is not representative of the quality of the book.

Fun read, well written LitRPG. Very accurate feelings for that age…

This was thoroughly enjoyable much better than I expected it to be. I've read a few books of slightly similar premise before but I enjoyed this one the most of that type so far. My only regret is I now have to wait months for the next one. Highly recommend. On a small note though I do wonder if the authors name is intentional or not after reading the book.

Really enjoyed this story

This was a very good story. I liked the characters and plot. Only problem is they are a bit to young. Aside from that it was very good and enjoyable.

While this book is distinctly young-adult in tone and in its characters, the plot is clearly defined and paced, and the magic system is interestingly fractal.

I've heard people complain about overpowered protagonists, and Melvin's ability to edit the world is clearly OP, but this is offset by clear limits and risks. He can't edit people of a higher level. His edits are visible to high-level magicians. He can't edit mana directly. He can't enhance things beyond his own level. Oh, and the biggest restriction, if his class is discovered then he will likely be enslaved. That seems balanced to me.

I'm a sucker for detailed progression stories. This is one of the better ones. Melvin is constantly gathering data and experimenting with every aspect of his magic. It's this aspect that I enjoyed the most... rather than the teen angst of an unrequited relationship. Oh well, you can't have everything.

Book one

This actually turned out to be a decent story.
Granted it is about a couple of young and immature teens that act just like that. Having the information that he needs presented to him and he ignores it to do some pretty stupid and reckless things.
The writing and editing are top notch so I have nothing to put on Goodreads. However I did see this over on Royalroad.

4.5 Stars - This book was full of flaws, the main character was extremely over powered, it was very childish at times and definitely directed at YA. That being said, It was tons of fun!

Angsty Teenage LitRPG Drama

Pretty good book. There's a bully. A new love interest. A discovered talent for magic. High school drama.
Don't expect much in the way of stats or xp. The book is very light on them.

super fun

I really enjoyed this. Fun story about a kid learning about magic and his unique powers. The powers themselves were interesting and different. Made it an intriguing read. Definitely needs that aspect fleshed out better. I hope that happens more in book two.

Would have given it 5 stars, but the MC made a lot of dumb choices and those parts were annoying to read.

Fantastic

So many of these LitRPG books are all the same. They go on an adventure and kill monsters and level up. Pages and pages of just leveling up. This writer writes a great story with lots of action and you just cannot stop reading. Very good book!!

Starts a little rough but gets very good.

I really enjoyed this book. I look forward to the next in the series. The character interactions are very well thought out and the advancement makes sense for the most part.

It just didn't work for me. Main character is an idiot, and the girl isn't much better.

Characters can do nearly anything they want, except when they can't - and that's about as much explanation for why as you'll find in the book.

Also, the interactions between the main characters are cringey regarding what can loosely be termed budding romance or just plain innuendo.

At 10% lost me. On track to be mass murderer

And the MC idiot could care less about reading the warning to either his class or spells, oh and kidnapping someone to teach you magic is a nono. Loathe moron MC.

Sigh

This would have been a really good book if it didn't have the teenage hormonal male innuendos every other page or so.

Something’s Not Right Here

Melvin was trying to follow the chain of command and report that he was being bullied. The teacher said he teaches and does not deal with student drama. So Melvin went to the counselor and he was told that he didn’t have any proof of the bully’s actions. Witnesses? No one was going to stand up to him. The principal was his last stop. But he ended up mouthing off, and asked him if he was doing his job protecting the students. The principal says he needs proof and the student has been a model student for four years. Melvin is new and has already gotten in trouble for talking back to his teachers.

Melvin loses his cool and says he was running away from Tim. The other time he was thrown in the trash can, the principal really doesn’t think he threw himself in there, does he? Melvin actually asks him “How stupid can you be?” He then was asked why he talked back to his teachers. He said, I can’t help it if you hire idiots. This all led him to be evaluated (again) and they said he is on the spectrum besides the already existing ADHD and Dyslexia. As he is sitting waiting for his mother to come pick him up just to afford the small apartment they had. The problem was that mom works two jobs, so as he waited he saw a floating yellow box just outside his view. When he focuses on it, it moves away.

Without moving my eye, I focused on it. He tried to latch on to it to get more information. It obeyed his mental command and it showed in his central vision now. Debuff: Grand Illusion - Block world magic, duration infinite. The receptionist thinks Melvin is acting crazy as he tries to engage the yellow icon. He then just tried willing it to go away. The menu said attempt to dispel debuff is successful and the yellow icon went away. Now when he looks at the receptionist, he can get certain information about her. He could see her name, her class, her affection and her level. When his mom picked him up, he checked her status. Then the next day, everyone was level 1. Why was that? When Melvin sees the librarian, he sees that she is level 2. How did she get to level 2? They talk and agree to share information as they learn about the system.

Please understand the main character is a teenager and this book is for YA. If you are okay with that, I think you will enjoy this book.

Sorry this is long.

Not a bad story and interesting world created its bit too light on system and stats including stat, traits & skills information to point of no info at all unfortunately, and mc is possibly worst thing in this book rest was good just needs cut out lovey-dovey & mc pressuring her he is honestly way too needy & kinda desperate. (It made for unpleasant reading.)
I am interested in seeing how can raise base stats as they should be important.

Bullet notes.
#. Mc is a ideat wisdom should be 5-10 on stats maybe lower.
#. Relationship mc keeps trying to force onto kalli is just wrong & uncomfortable should not try force or pressure someone into it like they are to kalli.
#. Mc OP skills needs more limits or close to over powered especially 90% + in book.
#. Lot of skills items extra don't make sense to me I mean wear did ball of mana come from.? (just 1 example)
#. His dreams parts found boring.
#. Lack of info on traits & skills found frustrating need know how work what do and limits? (Especially mc's. )
#. Found abilitys, skills, traits just showing up out of nowhere suddenly when needed dissapointing & felt cheap lazy writing even.
#. Please stop lavender laughed its so over used got annoying.
#. Can't use OP skill on things of higher lvl yet kinda did that later on in book.? With Deleting high lvl spells for example.
#. Delete is way too powerful its possible story killer as is now.

Finally.
I hope Melvin (mc) never gets together with kalli when/if do that's when I stop reading. & please undo the mates connection that's all sorts of wrong.

Hope book 2 & 3 are better as this has potential.

All Right

Several mistakes are littered throughout the book, but the plot is good and Melvin's abilities are cool. One issue is that he could have used his powers to help make tweaks to the house so that his mother had an easier time with managing the budget. Another issue that ran rampant was making his MC a target for insulting comments from girls and fellow students and other adults. The MC comes across as both OP and pathetic and it's a weird mix.

And a 15yo (born circa 2006) who has nerd knowledge of stuff that came out in the 70s/80s? Feels like the author is writing his own interests into the character's. And would the MC even know what a home phone is enough to make fun of an adult for owning one?

If an author is going to write minor characters (esp modern ones) then interests and pop culture references need to reflect that. Or write characters that are a reflection of a believeable age for the classic references (Robin Hood PoT, The Goonies, King Arthur, etc.) PS I'll give Star Wars and Harry Potter a pass since those are extremely popular even today.

In summary, the writing needs to get polished, but the premise is solid enough to continue reading the series.

Really interesting coming of age story full of unexpected twists and turns.

The MC is a latch-key HS student because his single mom has to work multiple jobs to put food on the table. He is bullied and is a social outcast, but is however a good student. He unexpectedly awakens his magic and performs an impossible summoning, based on his low class and mana level. Although he's is an intelligent kid, he's still an inexperienced kid and he does dumb stuff, which when you add magic to the mix spells trouble.

Now everyone wants a piece of the MC, to manipulate his powers. Sounds like government officials who all have a plan for your time and especially your money. It begins with a transference it to themselves. The MC and his summoned gf really can't trust anyone else, nor let anyone know the extent of his mage class or abilities. Lots of twists and turns as well as creative uses of mana manipulation including dual cultivation without being intimate (maybe not as enjoyable as the horizontal mambo, but it worked for saving their bacon).

All said, this was quite enjoyable and I will be reading the next books in the series.

DNF about 70% in. Not even an active decision to quit because of something really bad happening - I just dont have the motivation to continue.
To put it simple: The pacing is too slow, it’s boring. It would make for a decent fantasy, but not a litRPG. It is clearly for a younger audience, but other books like Mark of the fool for example, is also directed at younger readers and a lot more exciting. It takes 17 chapters - long chapters, 30min+ - to reach the first real fight against weak, f-rank monsters. The ability of the Mc is so op that stats and levels don’t even really matter, neither does magic education. He got a book on how his ability works early on and hasnt opened it one time - he just magics away and it works for him.
He is a 15 year old teenager and the author wanted to showcase that, but there is only so much awkward bathroom moments, embarrassment over finding women attractive or school bullying moments you can take before it gets annoying.
And if the author really wanted to address primarily younger readers, then Kalies background is also a questionable decision, that clearly stood out in the otherwise lighthearted story.

An Enjoyable and Entertaining Start

Not for the first time, I find myself wishing for more nuance than Amazon's typical 5 star rating system, because while it's not a full 5 Summoning is a better start than just a 4. Technically, it's reasonably well structured, no real grammatical or linguistic errors - even the magical language it creates makes some sense - so as not to distract from the story, and the pacing is solid. It's done a good job of setting its stage for the following stories with characters that are interesting and for whom we care about what's happening and what's to come. The world they inhabit is also interesting - an intriguing mix of The modern world we know combined with a game-style (almost isekai-like) magical one that can use more detail. The threat to them is reasonably mysterious, and we are left wanting to know more. In short, it leaves you ready for the next installment, which I'll be grabbing shortly. Stay tuned for the next review ...

Please on please make it stop

The book starts off bad.
Bad as in very transparent, predictable, and reused characters with a plot out of the eighties. I don’t know why the Harry Potter woeful life gets rehashed so much in these types of books but I wish authors would put as much thought into that as they do into their magic systems.

I was in terror at the point the high school library was mentioned. With real books to do so called research. WT hell? I graduated before computers and school libraries were not great places for research. My kids laugh at the idea of a library because all the research is done online.

That’s just in the first 30 pages…. Then it gets really dumb.

I couldn’t handle it… read at your own detriment.
