Evan Camby is the award-winning author of "Walking After Midnight: Tales for Halloween" series and the forthcoming "Midnight Frost: Chilling Tales for Winter Nights."
Camby's works are rooted in the gothic literary tradition and have elements of horror, thriller, mystery, and suspense.
I think book 3 is my favorite of Camby’s Walking After Midnight series. I really enjoyed all but one story. My one complaint would be that the author needed a better editor. The story I didn’t like as much contained no less than 4 grammatical errors in it. Annoying more than anything. Otherwise, this was creepy good Halloween fun!
If you're looking for some good, spooky stories to get you in the Halloween spirit, be sure to pick up the Walking After Midnight trilogy. These stories are great to read on Halloween night or around a campfire.
Evan Camby is one of the most underrated authors I've ever read. She truly is a master at writing horror short stories.
This is the third Halloween short story collection I've read from her, and they have all been excellent. Many writers seem to overdue the short story, going for something pretentious rather than just, well, telling a story. Camby is not like that. She's to the point, but never what you'd call terse.
I think my favorite story in this one was "The Best House on the Block", about a haunted house attraction that's more than it's billing. But I liked many of the stories, and think they were all well done.
I hope we get a short story collection from her every Halloween!
Every Evan Camby collection is worthwhile. All three Walking After Midnight collections have been five stars for me. Her stories perfectly capture the Halloween spirit and offer just the right mix of creepy, nostalgic fun. I look forward to much more from Miss Camby in the future.
I am always excited to read an Evan Camby book and I am never disappointed! I love reading horror stories, especially short stories. They are carefully crafted to make the most impact in this form. Ms. Camby does this quite well. Many of her stories linger in my mind. Actually, I make it a point to read "Hayride" from her first Walking After Midnight collection of horror stories every Halloween evening. It still gives me a chill when I read it. I look forward to the next book!
I wanted to get a jump into the Halloween spirit as I welcomed the first ‘ber month, so I picked up an e-copy of Evan Camby’s Walking After Midnight: Tales for Halloween III. The first story seems like the introduction of a couple of paranormal investigators with more stories to tell. Next up is a dad trying to give his kids a trick or treat night they’ll never forget, even though the coolest house in the neighborhood neglected their customary decorative spread. A lighthouse, Fantasy Fest in Florida in the mid-1970’s, and a hanged pirate’s curse, and a new lighthouse keeper populate the third tale. Threaded through the stories are pop culture references, such as the sea shanty from Jaws, quotes from “American Psycho,” and carpeting from Stephen King’s Overlook Hotel. The next story tells of a late-night showing of a certain George Romero film in an old-timey movie theater. Travel back in time for the next story to the early 1700’s. Hallowtide tells of three generations. As the title suggests, Evan has two previous Halloween collections available as well.
The stories vary greatly in nature, and the characters are equally diverse. These are quite enjoyable tales, though they lack significant scares or thrills. They would be suitable for older children seeking a fright but who are too young for the more intense slasher fare that is popular with others.
A house flipper with everything at stake faces off against an ancient evil. The screening of a horror classic in a historic theater awakens an undead horror. A lighthouse keeper grappling with instability encounters the ghosts of his past. A colonial American village confronts a malevolent force lurking in the nearby woods. An aged priest shares the chilling story of his family's dark curse over three generations. And a home adorned for Halloween delivers more to trick-or-treaters than mere treats.
The third installment in Evan Camby's WALKING AFTER MIDNIGHT: PART III is again a collection of six single-author scary short stories, well suited to Spooky Season or year round. Although all are scarily entertaining, I wish to single out one story, "Of God or Ghost," as sufficiently terrifying to turn one's hair white and freeze one's bones. The story of a house flipper with a tragic past and betrayed, penurious, present, the seemingly undefeatable Implacability and multiplicity of the Horrors here, reaching potentially millennia back into the past, is exceptionally disturbing.
This was the best short stories book I think I've ever read. So why only four stars? I feel cheated! The story with Gemma and the house restoration should have been a stand alone book. It would have been so good. The ending just felt like a copout! There should have been more ...much more to the story. Other than that all of the stories were excellent. Truly one of the best books I've read in a long time and I am not a big fan of short stories.
Great collection of short stories for the most spooky season of the year. I enjoyed Walking After Midnight Part III immensely and will definitely read the other collections by Evan Camby now that I've read this one. Well written, easy to read, great spooky fun.
Unique tales of horror and mystery and occult and insanity - all good - varied spooky stories for the person who loves a twist in their horror stories - I’ve read all 3 in this series and I can highly recommend all.
An enjoyable collection of horror stories. Got to the end a lot quicker than I wanted! Some well thought out concepts fleshed out with gruesome reults!!! Fantastic way to get me into the spooky season!
