The girl trips over branches, losing her footing. The darkness swallows her and she grabs thin air as she falls, her scream piercing the night. When she slams into the bottom of the pit, her heart hammers. She can’t believe what she’s seeing—a pile of perfect white bones…

In the small town of Crooked Creek, where the Appalachian Mountains climb into the clouds, nineteen-year-old Mandy’s Spring Break takes a sinister turn. Detective Ellie Reeves races straight to the scene, driving through the winding roads to the abandoned orphanage.

Ellie saves the teenage girl but discovers human remains that have been there for thirty years, ever since the home for children closed down. Her heart shatters at the thought that they might belong to the helpless orphans.

Working day and night on the case, Ellie searches for the orphanage’s files, but they have been stolen—somebody is clearly trying to cover their tracks. As she interviews the residents of the mountain community, Ellie finds out that almost everyone connected to the children’s home has disappeared.

Then a woman is found dead, her body marked with a strange symbol. When Ellie learns that the victim used to work at the orphanage, it’s clear that a twisted killer is trying to stop the truth coming out.

Ellie vows to solve this case that spans decades and, when her research into the meaning of the symbol leads her to a local business at the heart of recent controversy, she’s on the right track. Can she bring the secrets to light before another innocent person is murdered? And when she gets too close to uncovering the truth, will she survive?

A totally gripping and pulse-pounding crime-thriller that will have you holding your breath as you race through the pages! Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh.

Children's bones are found in an abandoned orphanage outside the town. The place has always had a bad reputation and there were suspicions that the headmaster was abusing his young pupils. Detective Ellie Reeves is tasked with solving this mystery from the past. However, Ellie may have trouble solving this case when people associated with the orphanage begin to disappear and a murderer begins to prowl the town.

The case that Ellie is working on together with the other characters we met in previous books is interesting. As always, there is no shortage of twists, and the stakes are high. Ellie has less and less time to stop the murderer, even when it comes to bones that have been buried by the orphanage for years.

I was hoping for some sort of breakthrough in Ellie's love life. However, that did not happen, and I am a bit disappointed. To some degree the situation seems to get even more complicated, but it is hard to say that it is making any significant progress. And Ellie's relationship with her parents is just as complicated as ever.

You can easily read this book even if you haven't read any of the previous ones, although you will find some threads more understandable if you know what happened. Well, at this stage in this series, there are a lot of characters with a lot of complicated connections between them, so it's probably easier when you already know something about them. But still, it's a complete story, and you don't need to know the earlier ones.

Even though the victims are young children, there are not many drastic descriptions of violence against them. But as with previous books in this series, this one also features scenes of violence against women, including sexual violence and torture.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Four teens go out one night for a bit of a ghostly experience. They go to Hawk House, an abandoned orphanage (30 years ago) which is reputed to be haunted by the ghosts of the poor children who died there. It was apparently a brutal place. But - these kids got more than they bargained for. It looks like a dark figure is moving around inside. 19 year old Mandy is freaked out and she runs, promptly falling into a deep pit…..wait for it….full of bones!

Detective Ellie Reeves, who is also Mandy’s aunt races over and is concerned about the whole thing. The next day forensics are called out and the grounds are searched and another pit of bones is found. Eventually it is determined the bones belong to two adults and about five children. Ellie is appalled and is determined to get justice for these poor souls. She calls for FBI agent Derrick Fox’s help as well.

This case is a hard nut to crack. Records are scarce and no one is willing to talk! Some of the children reportedly ran away from this house of horrors, I don’t blame them! When they finally get the names of the staff it seems they are always too late and find a body instead! The beastly man who ran the orphanage, Blackstone, just disappeared one day and has not been seen or heard of since. The sheriff at the time, Edgar Ogden, looked into some of the goings on but it seems to have been a very slapdash investigation. And now he is not saying much at all. Ellie and Derrick are convinced he is hiding something. But what?

Meanwhile a number of young women are being brutally murdered. Is this related to Hawk House? Is there more than one killer running around? The case got pretty complicated towards the end. I enjoyed the story, the characters are all familiar by now and villains were truly villainous. The pacing was crisp and never lagged. I just thought that, at times, it all became a bit melodramatic and I’m also wearying of the female detective who constantly rushes towards danger single handedly and always declares she’s fine when she so clearly isn’t. I guess I’ll have a break from female detective crime thrillers for a while.

I did enjoy the book and I am enjoying series and a little break will ensure I look forward to the next book. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Hidden Bones was a fantastic addition to the series following Ellie as she works on a case connected to an abandoned orphanage.

When Detective Ellie Reeves gets the call that her niece was hurt when she and some friends decides to go to Hawk House, an abandoned orphanage, she races to the scene. After Ellie arrives, she finds her niece has fallen into a pit full of human bones while running from someone she saw on the property. Determined to find out what happened, Ellie jumps straight into investigating but she quickly comes up against several roadblocks. The orphanage's files have gone missing and she can't find anyone left in town that's connected to the place. And just when she finally finds a former employee, she arrives to find the woman dead in her home. Ellie is now in a race against the clock to find the killer before they target someone else.

The mystery in Hidden Bones pulled me in right away and I wondered who Mandy saw at the orphanage and who the bones in the pit belonged to. No one in town seems to know much about the place which makes Ellie's research into its' history a bit more complicated. She eventually tracks down the former sheriff who had some dealings with the place but the man is reluctant to talk and actually warns Ellie away from the investigation. After the woman who used to work there is killed, Ellie has a bit more to go on as it's a current crime but it's clear that someone is trying to stop Ellie from learning what happened there. A few different suspects popped up throughout the case and I thought the author did a great job keeping you guessing on what really happened. The ending has several twists I didn't see coming and I liked how everything was wrapped up.

Ellie continues to be an excellent main character and her skills as an investigator have developed considerably since The Silent Dolls. This case is a bit different though from some of the others she's been involved in as the bones discovered are decades old. With the case being so entrenched in the past, Ellie has to approach the case from a different angle which I enjoyed. Ellie doesn't have nearly as many confrontations with townsfolk blaming her for what happened in this book but there are still some who seem to want to blame her for everything that goes wrong which is frustrating. Ellie's relationship with Derrick continues to be enjoyable and I like seeing them together both personally and professionally.

Overall Hidden Bones was a great read and I'm looking forward to picking up the next book in the series, The Girl in the River, soon.

Hidden Bones book 6 in the Ellie Reeves series is once again absolutely amazing!

With bones being discovered by her niece Maddy, she us first on the scene to try and find out what happened. With bones being there since she was a young and more being discovered Ellie is keen to find out what happened to the kids at the home where the bones were found.

I really enjoyed this book!! I hlove this entire series and this installment didn't let me down! Ellie is a kick add detective who is constantly trying to find the answers. Which for this case is good because there is so much going on and so many suspects honestly I had zero idea who it was throughout.

Highly recommend you picking up this series and giving it a read!! It's worth it I promise. Every single book is amazing!!! 5 stars.

Thanks Netgalley Rita Herron and Bookouture for the digital review copy of hidden bones in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.

Now that my heart rate is back to normal here is my review!!!!
Book six in the series to feature Detective Ellie Reeves and what a cracking read. I thought I knew what to expect from this author but her latest Hidden Bones is is on another level.
A group of teenagers are doing a Tick Too challenge. They are spending the night at an delapitated house and filming their exploits on their phones. Now you just know that something bad is going to happen. One of the girls in the the team gets spooked and is running away from the house and into the woods and falls into a pit, which is barely covered over. At the bottom of the pit the girl finds that she has fallen onto a layer of bones Human bones. The house in question is Hawk House a delapitated orphanage presumed to be haunted. This is only the beginning. As Ellie and her team investigate the house what they find is abhorrent. A fast paced, heartbraking and at times disturbing read. A prolific serial killer who loves his work and likes to inflict indescribable pain on his victims and so much more. Hooked from the first to the last page, full of misdirection and heart stopping moments. The best in this series so far and is definitely a MUST READ!!!!!

Hidden Bones returns readers to Crooked Creek and possibly Detective Ellie Reeves hardest case yet, and one that may once again tear this small-town in two.

As nineteen-year-old Mandy whilst reluctantly taking part in a tik tok challenge with friends at the abandoned Hawk House orphanage falls into a pit and discovers skeletal remains.

But that's just the start of a confounding and gripping mystery that spans thirty years. As when Ellie, Ranger Cord McClain and FBI Agent Derrick Fox return the following day. They discover a much more horrifying sight, and as Ellie starts to dig she soon learns all evidence of the Orphanages existence has disappeared.

Then a body is found and a startling symbol identified and the case becomes even more terrifying and as Ellie struggles to deal with the ramifications she also has to cope with a distant Derrick and a sheriff who has his mind on other things.

Yet, Ellie is determined to find the killer no matter the cost even if that means putting herself in the line of fire and exposing secrets someone in Crooked Creek is hell bent on keeping hidden.

And with twists galore and great pacing this truly was an unputdownable read, and one that I can't recommend highly enough.

There’s something about this series that keeps me coming back. But at the same time I just can’t get invested in the characters. I’m just not sure what it is.

This story was really complicated and every time you thought it was done another killer was revealed. And I can’t help but feel sorry for Cord. I’m just not sure how I want it all to go.

But all in all a fast paced read.

I’ve read the previous books in this series and was hooked on each one so I waited patiently for the latest one to be released and I wasn’t disappointed!!

I couldn’t wait to get back to Crooked Creek and meet Ellie & Derrick and boy was this case a thriller, I couldn’t believe all the twist and turns just when you think you know who the culprit is you get hit with a curve ball!.

This is another fantastic instalment to this series.

Y’all know how much I love Lisa Regan’s books. So I figured Hidden Bones was a perfect read for me.

Guess what? I was right!

As I tend to do, I’ve jumped into the middle of the series here, so I’m getting to know Detective Ellie Reeves on the fly. I was able to follow the story well enough, but I need to go back and start at the beginning to get all the backstory.

The action starts off with a bang when a teenage girl falls into a pit and realizes she’s landed on a pile of bones. The bones are on the property of Hawk House, a former children’s home that closed down due to rumors of abuse and mistreatment. Ellie and her team investigate to determine whether the bones could belong to children that used to live at the home.

What starts out as an investigation of potentially old crimes is brought suddenly into the present when a woman’s body is found. Ellie learns that the victim used to work at the children’s home, and when more bodies turn up, she realizes someone doesn’t want the truth about Hawk House to come out.

This is a heck of a ride, y’all. Rita Herron does an outstanding job of throwing down hints and then spinning the story in a different direction. The dual timeline perspective used to tell the story works wonderfully here.

Lots of twists and turns make for a thrilling read! Character development is excellent, and the story never lags. The tension builds with each new discovery.

And talking about tension – at some point, Ellie is going to have to choose. Ranger Cord McClain or Special Agent Derrick Fox? Decisions, decisions. I think I’m Team Derrick right now. Maybe.

If you love a good thriller, you’ll want to make Ellie Reeves’s acquaintance. I’m glad I did. Five stars from me!

Another brilliant book from Rita Herron.
Some teenagers discover some bones in an abandoned building and it’s the start of a gruesome investigation.
A woman is then found murdered and her body abandoned in the woods.
The property where the bones were found was an old children’s home and it’s clear the building is holding it’s fair share of secrets.
Further women are murdered but Ellie can’t work out if they are linked to the secrets surrounding the bones case.
Ellie gets help from Derrick but even with Cord, Bryce and the others, they have their hands full this time.
This is a fast paced crime thriller that will definitely have you racing through the pages.
A great read.

In this harrowing read by Rita Herron, the book starts off when a game involving teenagers, a young woman named Mandy stumbles into a pit and is terrified beyond belief when she lands in a pile of bones. Detective Ellie Reeves, and her team, including FBI agent Derrick Fox, discover evidence of an orphanage of over three decades ago, called Hawk House, where sadly, some of the bones belonged to young children. Why were these children killed, what actually went on at that orphanage? Furthermore, Ellie must determine what a rash series of current murders has to do with that literal house of horrors.

This case becomes personal for Ellie, because Mandy is her niece, so at least a part of the story is focused on the effect it has on the teenager. Meanwhile, it appears that the discovery of these bones has triggered a killer into gruesome activity. Ellie is forced to try to put the pieces of this puzzle together as quickly as possible, trying to stop this evil killer as body after body falls.

One thing is made clear. Not only was the past filled with secrets, there is someone now that has a cruel vendetta. Looking for the man who ran that orphanage creates a race against time in this book that is truly sad considering most of the victims were children. And then considering the newer victims, young women who are being brutally murdered, there has to have some connection to that orphanage. Ellie must make that connection, all while trying to stay out of danger herself.

There is a side drama beyond the murders of old and the present murders. This drama involves Ellie and her confusing love life. The question of whether or not it will be resolved enters into the picture. This thrilling, fast-paced book definitely has surprising twists and turns, and never misses a beat. What an excellent addition to a thoroughly compelling series. The conclusion leaves readers with a question that begs to be answered regarding Ellie’s personal life. Or does it? It is with bated breath that this reviewer is more than eager to continue on with this gripping series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This is the sixth outing for Ellie & another well written engrossing read whilst it could easily be read on its own I always like to read a series from the start. The pace is good & I found myself taken on a gamut of emotions & at times it wasn’t a comfortable read but once started I needed to read it until I’d finished & burned the midnight oil as I could go to sleep until things were resolved. There were twists & turns & edge of the seat moments until the conclusion. I think this is my favourite of the series so far

As I started this book my initial thoughts were; ‘Bloody hell that was one hell of an opening chapter!’ It didn’t really let up throughout either. As we gather the background information needed I found myself thinking about that Prologue. It was so dark and gruesome I just knew this book was going to follow a similar pattern.

The storyline for this one was intricate and I really needed to be on the ball as I read through the various lines of questioning but at times felt lost. Not sure if I just misread or being a little poorly affected my concentration. Unfortunately this did impede my understanding if parts of the storyline, however this was nothing to do with the authors writing as that is exemplary, it was my lack of focus.

Following a previously featured character was also a nice touch as it meant we found out more back story from two of the characters. This brings the continued character development and storyline progression into the forefront which helped me connect with an unlikeable character.

Overall a fabulous book which kept me gripped, had a few unexpected twists and a bit of a cliffhanger for me to wait in until I read book 7.

Book 6 in the series and it's the best one yet!

When bones are found on the site of an abandoned orphanage Ellie and her team are called in to investigate. But when new victims start turning up its obvious someone doesn't want the truth coming out.

With so many twists and turns my brain felt it was on those mountain switchback roads trying to keep up!

I read this in one day as it was just too good to put down.

I love this series and I can't wait for the next one.

This was another great addition to the Ellie Reeves series by Rita Herron. This book had a ton of action and a ton of twist and turns that kept the reader guessing until the very end. I do wish that Ellie would pick the right guy in this series however, I really am not loving her with the FBI agent and wish should get her head out of her booty and give Cord a chance because I really like him.
I am giving Hidden Bones five out of five stars.

Hidden Bones by Rita Herron is the sixth book in the Detective Ellie Reeves series. Ellie Reeves has a shocking mystery to solve this time. Bones are discovered on the grounds of the long-closed orphanage, Hawk House, an orphanage that had been run by a cruel, abusive man. In addition to this cold case Ellie also has current murders to solve. Once again FBI agent Derrick Fox and Ranger Cord McClain are Ellie's stalwart assistants on the cases. (As an aside from the murder mystery - the relationship between Ellie and Derrick and between Ellie and Cord are confusing in this book. Normally I really enjoy the romantic relationships that evolve in series but this situation was confusing and distracting for me in this story.) I felt chilled at the evil in this story. This book is a suspenseful, action-packed page-turner. I like author Rita Herron's voice. She tells a great story here!

A picturesque town surrounded by mountains seems to be plagued by evil, murder and some of worst depravity you could imagine in humanity. Ellie has barley had a few months of peace since the last rash of murders and is blown away by this newest case that affected her niece. Some sick sick stuff has been going on in their town for years and someone seems to be trying to silence anyone who knows about it. Thrilling, action pact and more than a little emotional, Ellie has her job cut out for her.

“Pay attention to the whispers, so we won’t have to listen to the screams.”

Detective Ellie Reeves has been called to a scene where teenagers on a ghost hunting trip find something horrible.

HAWK HOUSE was a orphanage that closed down years ago. They say it’s haunted now they know why. While investigating what happened people are being murdered. Someone doesn’t want the truth to come out.

The wind gives life, her grandmother said. When it ceases to blow, we die. But do not fear death. It is part of the circle of life.

This is a fast paced page turning suspenseful read. Secrets are revealed and the evil that stared in that house is still out there.Anything that this author writes is good and this series get better every new story.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Hidden Bones, the sixth novel to feature Detective Ellie Reeves, set in the fictional Appalachian town of Crooked Creek, Georgia.

A group of teenagers are exploring an abandoned building when one falls into a pit and discovers human bones. Ellie rescues the teenager and launches an investigation into the bones. The building was an orphanage and rumours of child cruelty surrounded it, so she assumes that the bones belong to orphans housed there, but someone doesn’t want her to find out. Then the body of a woman is found, tortured and a strange sign carved into her body. What is going on in Crooked Creek? Ellie is determined to find out.

I liked the premise of Hidden Bones, but didn’t particularly enjoy the execution. The narrative is split between various voices in the present and a young, unidentified girl from 30 years ago. It makes the read fragmentary and less than compulsive or absorbing. It is also quite a long novel, but that is probably necessary to fit everything in.

The plot is quite complicated with Ellie running two separate investigations, the historical bones and the present day murder with a few extra items thrown in as a bonus. The upshot is that the novel is spread too thin and there is no depth to most of it, the exception being the orphans’ trauma, but even then it doesn’t dig too deeply. It feels like a recitation of events rather than an emotional connection.

Ellie is very flat in this novel - it’s all about the investigation, so even anything that might arouse her emotions, like a big disagreement with her mother, is suppressed while she works the case. As I said a recitation of events.

Hidden Bones did not appeal to me, but I’m sure that plenty of readers will like it.

Children… As soon as a baby enters the world, you will in love with them. You are determined to cherish them and help and protect them in every possible way. Sometimes though life happens and parents die or get ill. You count on social services to take over.

Not every parent is a loving one unfortunately. Children are a burden to them or they use them for the most disgusting things. That’s when foster parents should take over.

Orphanages and foster parents should be a God’s gift to those children who have been through so much in their, often, very young lives. It’s really painful to realise the truth is, more than once, devastating. The abuse continues for some or starts right there for others.

Adults who should make sure those children are cared for, seem to be vile characters. Big brutes against defenceless little humans. David against Goliath where David almost always looses.

Honestly, these children are traumatized for the rest of their lives. Some are strong and learn to beat the monsters from the past. Others break when it seems the past can no longer remain in the past. There is only one thing left for them to do: make sure the secrets are just that: secrets.

In this already (I know time does fly) 6th book we treated to a very complex story that is both disgusting and amazing. Once more I am wondering who the real baddies are here. Of course killing or hurting someone is never a good thing, but should we not also blame the people who are at the base of the actions?

Not everything is dark though. There is a little sparkle of romance too. Who would you like to win Ellie’s heart? I know who I am supporting and I think they are a way better match. 😊

Great book that I had to finish as soon as possible no matter what. 5 stars.

Thank you
