Excellent manga!

GODDESSES KEEP COMIN'

In this volume there are two short stories before the main event.

First, you will read about the first experience of Skuld with an angel of her own, simple but absolutely lovely.

Later, a story about how a broom can fall in love with a goddess, and not any goddess, but Belldandy! Truly great stuff that will rob your heart.

And finally the story that gives name to the volume,...

...where Sayoko makes a deal to become the campus queen of the Nekomi Tech,...

...but she became literally a queen there!!!

Great stories as only Kosuke Fujishima can tell and draw.

Highly recommended this volume.

I'm admittedly copying some of my tags from my review of the first book since I can never remember how I tag "literal deities" for the books I read. I guess I don't, not really. (Demons, sure! Loads of THOSE in the books I read!)

So. This volume in specific gives me mixed feelings about titling volumes like this, since—yes—the main story in this is about Sayoko becoming almost literal Queen of the Campus. However, the first TWO chapters are about different things entirely: Skuld's angel (and the misadventures with Sentaro they both have), and Stringfellow the Broom. The fact that the book starts with NOT Queen Sayoko is... a decision.

But, as I've mentioned in a review of Natsume's Book of Friends, Vol. 26, these early translations of Ah! Megami-Sama appear to have deliberately rearranged chapters so a longer-running story like Queen Sayoko will be completely collected within the same volume. I kind of like that, the self-containedness of the volumes, even if any given one may not *necessarily* make sense to a complete newcomer (this one sure wouldn't).

This one also has just a *little* bit of dramatic tension; the "problem" with Belldandy is she's sort of the Wholesome Girl version of an Overpowered Character, so every story has a Good and Wholesome ending (or a facsimile thereof, considering demons are sometimes involved). Queen Sayoko has that, still, but . So I do like this a little more than the usual "what passes as slice-of-life for them" stories.

Do I like the volume overall? ...eh, I really can't get into the "needy sentient inanimate object" kind of storyline with Stringfellow. Like, why is a BROOM falling in love with a humanoid girl (even if she IS an angel)? Or even ? I don't know. I don't think I could do the reverse and fall in *romantic* love with a broom, or car, or whatever not even alive thing, so I don't get that trope. (Similar for beasts falling for humans, especially human princesses, who aren't even "beasts" that are cursed humans.)

Huh. That review escaped me for a bit.

On the whole, a good read, definitely recommended for fans of lighthearted comedy (both meanings, humour and "has a good ending")!

Pretty cute Angel Egg story and then a really heavy Sayoko story.

World: The art is good, but it takes it up another notch with the Queen Sayoko story arc, there is a subtle change in the line work and the results is what we see today as the modern standard for this series coming into full realisation, it’s gorgeous. The world building is okay with little bits and pieces here to show the depth of the world, with the egg and also the broom.

Story: The early stories are well done and they are solid slice of life stories. The work story was good, the egg story was good. The main story this time around is the start of the Queen Sayoko arc which honestly feels a bit out of place and unnaturally dire and mean compared to the rest of the book, but just like Terrible Master Urd I know that the other side of this story will be filled with heart.

Characters: Some development for Keiichi which is needed and also Skuld which is fun. Sayoko taking center stage here is okay but there is just what we know from her past and nothing in terms of development at this moment yet.

The art is so good.

Onward to the next book!

Having read through these before, I had completely forgotten about Stringfellow, the romantically inclined broom. Yeah, you read that right. He's a broom. You also get another of the ridiculous team-ups with Sayoko and Mara. Additionally, you also get to see Skuld's angel for the first time. (She's ridiculously cute.) Can I just say again how beautiful the art in this manga series has gotten? It's stunning now, and I know it only gets better from there.

Skuld has the opportunity to grow in this volume. First by meeting what is a character who serves as her first curse. Then she gets her own angel a bit too early and she isn't ready for it. Still, given how much time is left in this series there is a great chance she'll get it back in the future.

Sayoko is the woman who kept losing races to Keiichi and Belldandy.

Pretty in Scarlet: Belldandy calls her angel, Blessed Bell, to heal a tree. Skuld misbehaves and swallows an angel's egg that belonged to Urd. The angel hatches and Skuld names her Noble Scarlet. Sentaro visits and Noble Scarlet gives Skuld a push so she kisses him. Something happens, though, and the angel returns to its egg.

The Goddesses' Apprentice: The story opens with Urd's broom proclaiming its love for Belldandy. The broom asks Urd to make him human but she says no, so it goes to Skuld to ask her. The broom talks about how it feels about Belldandy, but then gets a crush on Chihiro.

Call Me Queen: Sayoko prays to be campus queen and Mara answers her call. The campus is transformed into a castle. Everyone inside is forced to acknowledge Sayoko as their queen. Keiichi and the three goddesses enter the castle. Belldandy has to actually use an attack spell to save Keiichi.

And Then There Was One: The chem lab throws bombs at the group and Skuld chases them with bombs of her own. Urd ends up fighting some guys in a wrestling ring. Belldandy is drugged, and fake Belldandies go after Keiichi.

Sayoko or Bust: Keiichi runs into Sora who helps him proceed in the castle. Belldandy has been captured, but someone comes along and releases her.

At Sayoko's Side: Keiichi and Belldandy are brought under Sayoko's control.

Back Where You Belong: Mara orders Sayoko to tell Belldandy to return home forever. Still, it's a matter of who defines 'home.”

This is perhaps my favorite of all the Oh My Goddess! compilation volumes I've ever read - the balance of slapstick humor, silliness, outsized romanticism, and surprisingly poignant emotions is precisely right here. If you're looking for a place to start reading this incredibly long series, you cannot do better than this - and if you're a longtime fan and this material is new to you, you'll love it even more.

This volume is completely worth it for 2 chapters - Skuld getting "Noble Scarlet" and one of Urd's brooms wanting to be human!
Thats right, a BROOM wishes to be a man to spend more time around Belldandy

Sayoko as Queen story starts off great, but the book ends before it does. Have vol 15 prepped & ready to go before you start on that
