Loved this. The Kahless story was appropriately epic, the Ferengi Fam story was. So. Good. And just... exactly right. ISHKA and her stupid, lovely boys. Trill story was... absolutely fine. Overall, great experience.

Klingons: didn't really get what happened, but pretty epic action scenes

Ferengi: really fun! I love Quark reluctantly doing good & being bullied by his mom

Trill: great thoughts on identity but resolution was too easy

This is a really cute collection of stories! I thought the balance of characters who are only known by mention/original charaters and then the adventure of the ever-iconic trio of Quark/Moogie/Rom was really nicely done, each compelling and with the touches of humour that make Star Trek so accessible. The artwork was just brilliant, particularly Andy Price's in catching the expressions of three characters who are distinct and memorable.

I'll leave the final word to Quark...

Because I know no other way to live, I am reading Star Trek chronologically. That meant the story of Kahless was first, and next I had the Trill issue. At first I intended to have this in my “Currently Reading” and leave a note for my later review, but it would be there for such a hilarious amount of time, I skipped the Ferengi issue for now and just update this review when I get to it. Coulda just gone on and read it, but why should I become sensible now?

The Klingon issue was shockingly good. I’d give it 4.5/5 personally, maybe partly due to the shock of it just being that engaging. I rolled my eyes when I realized they were dramatizing the story of Kahless. But this was actually super cool in execution (no pun intended). In a short amount of time, it did a wonderful job gripping me, even with its frenetic, almost jump-cut style. It felt appropriately melodramatic for the origin of Klingon Honor.
A small note though… uh, not to be indelicate, should this not have been drawn with TOS-era looking Klingons? Or are we saying the TOS-era look was a blip in their history, not a predecessor? I don’t know if that’s something they ever really address beyond the one line Worf has in DS9, but I am legitimately curious.

The Trill issue was fine. By the end of it I enjoyed it, but it needed a few more pages to space things out and be less confusing early on in my opinion. I had trouble following some of it at first. Cool seeing the caves though, and what species is the “Guardian” (as the concept art refers to him)? Honestly this did more to give me interesting questions about the Trill than it did to answer any curiosities I already had going in. I quite liked the art though, it’s a simple style but it matched the material.
I’d give the issue a 3/5.

Intriguing idea, ok execution.

Short stories (originally individual comics) featuring one of three Star Trek alien species:

Klingon: Kahless teaches dishonourable Klingons the meaning of Klingon honour in a way that dishonours their dishonour, while honouring his own honour. HONOUR! ⚔️

Ferengi: Quark frets about the loss of profit he may suffer from his mother's profiteering from the lack of profit-making opportunities allowed Ferengi woman, but in the end he turns a profitable profit. PROFIT! 🪙

Trill: A trill host doesn't want to host a symbiont as she wants to host only her own life, but symbiotically ends up hosting a symbiont. HOST! SYMBIONT! 🪱

So, yeah, it was ok.

Jody Houser is one of my favorite comics writers and she really got me in the feelings with this one.

The Klingon and Ferengi stories are great, but the real jewel is the Trill story. At first I didn’t really get what was going on, but later I realized that the nature of the story was intentionally being revealed slowly.

Without giving away too much, it’s a mystery story. It builds perfectly on Trill culture as established on Deep Space Nine. The story could only have taken place in that culture.

It’s twisty and emotional with perfect pacing and great art. Could not have been better.

I also highly recommend checking out Houser’s work in the Star Wars (Thrawn), Stranger Things, and Valiant comics (Faith forever!) universes.

Of the three stories in this, the Trill one was the best, with the most character development and story arc.

The Ferengi one was good as well, but would have preferred a female main character/narrator given the topic of the story.

The Klingon one felt a bit incomplete, with insufficient background information for the subject.

Note that all three stories require some background knowledge of Star Trek (especially information about these alien species and some of the characters from Deep Space 9 and The Next Generation). So, definitely intended for established fans, not an introductory book.

Star Trek: Aliens

The classic alien races of 'Star Trek' are often seen as projections of aspects of humanity. In this collection, while not dismissing this idea, readers are shown what the writers have wanted these great races to become. Something which works to build a bridge between our perceptions of difference and our recognition of what makes us alike.

The artwork is beautiful and fluid, complimenting the stories and the stories themselves are in the finest tradition of 'Star Trek'.

Pretty good overall. The Trill story is the most substantial by far. The Klingon story has some really great art and is a nice exploration of Kahless. The Ferengi story is entertaining enough, but is the least of the three.

The fatal flaw of Star Trek is that the aliens aren't very alien. It'd be nice to see the real differences between Klingons, Ferengi and Trill. But instead they're treated like cartoon characters.

The Kahless story was a little confusing for me. The Quark, Rom and Moogie story was the best. The Trill story was intriguing. Hooray for DS9 aliens!

Better that I thought it would be. A must read for Star Trek fans. New stories with three alien races that are interesting, impactful and with beautiful artwork that's adds to the story telling.
