The long-awaited next book from actress and New York Times bestselling author of The Rural Diaries, Hilarie Burton Morgan. Through memoir essays and magical practices, Grimoire Girl connects us to the enchantment that exists inside us all.
Since childhood, Hilarie Burton Morgan has felt the call to record, keep, and catalogue life in all its strange wonder. It was a whimsical habit, with no clear goal. And then, when she became a mother, the importance of all that collecting snapped into focus.
In an effort to patchwork together an anthology of traditions, curiosity, and magical thinking that she could pass down, Burton Morgan realized she was crafting a grimoire.
In her most intimate book yet, Burton Morgan shares how she’s creating an inheritance of mischief and magic that will outlive her. What’s more, she shows readers how they too can look at the elements of their lives and collect the pieces into a tangible collection of a lifetime of learning. Because in its purest form, a grimoire was a guide to keep you alive.
Like the grimoires of old, full of life-saving wisdom, these pages record the people, places, ideas and habits that have kept Burton Morgan alive, in her signature voice that is at once honest, witty, and charming. Accompanied by whimsical two-color illustrations by Olivia Faust, the book also includes Simple Spells, which are ways to bring magic into your daily create an altar that delights and inspires, practice candle magic and poetry spells, make an oracle deck, or channel your inner kitchen witch with recipes and potions.
So begin creating your own inheritance, take a long look inward and decide...
What wisdom will be written on the pages of your Grimoire?
Hilarie Burton Morgan is an actor, producer, farmer, candy dealer, and kid chauffeur. Known for her roles as Peyton on One Tree Hill, Sara Ellis on White Collar, her work as an MTV VJ, and her leading roles in popular Lifetime movies, she lives with her husband, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, in New York's picturesque Hudson Valley with their son Gus, daughter George, and a whole menagerie of animals.
"We all have something special about us, a thing deep down inside of us that is specifically ours. Our magic. Our me-gic."
There is no doubt that Hilarie Burton Morgan is talented in many areas, but of all her magics, her ability to tell stories is her me-gic! After the love that I felt for Rural Diaries I knew I had to do both the book & audiobook for this one as well. I could listen to her tell stories and speak about the things she loves All. Day. Long. So much enthusiasm and excitement. Passion. The title of this had me genuinely curious. I had never heard the term Grimoire before this book. Was it going to be black magic or more along the lines of potions & spells? Not exactly. Instead it was more a collection of quotes, secrets, deep thoughts, practices and beliefs. It's about the traditions and habits you've picked up in life. Knowing who you are, what you love, putting it down on paper, and leaving all those little tidbits behind one day in your Grimoire. I loved every second of this book! There are auto-buy authors whose books you can't wait to read. Those you get a certain satisfaction just seeing them sit on your shelf. & then there is Hilarie Burton. I quickly devour her books and then repeatedly pick them back up. To reread. For reference. For inspiration!! Recipes, quotes, knowledge, passion & relatability. I truly cannot wait to see what she dreams up next...and then listen to her read it to me. 5 magical stars.
"You’re going to miss life. You’ve got to jump off the cliff all the time and build your wings on the way down.”✨✨
I'd like to grow up and be Hilarie Burton Morgan someday (even though I am in fact, a grown up right now).
Mostly a collection of fond memories, witchy advice, and recommendations on starting your witchy journey. Less of an actual memoir as it's categorized. Still lovely and Burton-Morgan is a great writer and narrator.
I’m a huge fan of Hilarie Burton Morgan but haven’t read either of her books before this week. I am so happy about coming across this book and her other one on Libby.
This book is a more intimate look into Hilarie’s life as she delves into what she includes in her memoir. She talks about what kind of legacy she wants to leave for her children and the spells she recommends for each chapter.
As much as I enjoyed this book, it took me a couple times to get through it. Even then, I skimmed the last 45 minutes of it just to say I finished it. I’m not saying it’s boring but perhaps it’s not for me.
I do wish I had found this book earlier in my journey into witchcraft and Wicca. I would have started my own grimoire much earlier than I have if I had known how to do it.
If you’re looking for a good book that teaches the basics of how to start a grimoire and how to keep it, I’d say to pick this book up. Yes, I’m recommending it, even with the rating I gave it.
I’d recommend this book if you’re a fan of Hilarie’s and want a more intimate look into her life but I’m also recommending this book for beginner witches rather than more experienced witches.
If you know the steps needed to keep up with a grimoire or spell book, I’d say you can skip this book without missing anything vital in your witchcraft journey. But that’s just my personal opinion. Take it with a grain of sand, I guess.
All in all, I am glad that I read this book but am equally glad that I rented it through Libby instead of buying it outright like I normally would. Unfortunately, it’s not a book I would read a second time. I’m sorry.
A witchy memoir full of advice and mythology? Yes please. This was exactly what I was expecting, and more. It was truly magical and I can't wait to read Hilarie's other book too. At this point I'm sure I'd read anything she writes, I love her style (and narration, go get the audiobook!!!!).
4 stars. Rounded up, but I think I connected more with her first book. I enjoyed her sharing her knowledge about crystals, herbs and naturopathy. The coven talk gets a little away from me, but to each their own! As with her previous book, I loved the personal stories and connecting through shared memories and experiences.
I was really looking forward to reading this book after really loving her first memoir. This follow up is just a bit…hollow. It should be renamed to “An Appropriation Apothecary With Hollywood’s Hilarie Burton Morgan!” It includes some nice rituals and intentions but overall is a preachy self-five that lacks every morsel of the grounding/ perspective found in The Rural Diaries.
This one just felt like a compilation of stealing other people’s ideas of magic and it didn’t sit right with me. I was hoping it wouldn’t be white girl claiming all the concepts of witchery (and some parts weren’t; they were historical, which was interesting) but the part that most rankled me was the white saviorism of a blonde actress and her friends swooping in once they heard the football team was gone, heaven forbid! and dumping money on the poor little school til they fixed all the problems, hooray. (I did the audiobook so it’s possible I misheard a part of this section, but I’m pretty sure I got the gist, because this is how charter schools often begin too). As a teacher, just ew. Not a fan of this one at all, so disappointed 😢
I was utterly bewitched by Hilarie Burton Morgan's, Grimoire Girl. You won't be able to put it down as soon as you start reading it. Hilarie's signature writing style and personality shine through.
I loved Hilarie's debut novel, The Rural Diaries, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on an early copy. If you are hesitant because you think this book will be full of supernatural beliefs and occult vibes, don't be! This book is pure magic in the best way possible.
Hilarie introduces the theme of a grimoire and gives her definition to help lay out the book. A grimoire may be seen as a spell book, but it can be so much more. To Hilarie, it is a collection of knowledge and memories that you want to pass down to your kids, friends, and loved ones to help them understand you and learn from your experiences.
With every chapter, you are filled with hope. Hilarie shares so many of her experiences, favorite quotes, and advice in a way that is conversational and easy to understand. And she lays out advice on how we can all start our own grimoire for our loved ones. It can be as easy as putting some of our favorite quotes together, writing a journal (no pencils. remember we have to commit to our thoughts), sharing recipes, and passing on urban legends.
I think I could talk all day about this book. It was just that good! I do admit that this book did have me in my emotions. I was laughing when she described telling her daughter about the Monster in the woods to get her to help her listen more. I cried okay literally balled when she described the loss of beautiful friendships like the ones she shared with Rabbi George and Willie Garson. And I continuously felt interested in her perspective whether it be mythology, flowers, poetry, or her simple spells. But the most important thing that Hilarie Burton Morgan's words accomplish is the beauty of magic. She reminds us that magic isn't just something you pull out of a hat. Magic is already happening to us in our everyday lives and putting our experiences to paper helps us recognize it and cherish it. I believe that by the time you finish reading this, you will undoubtedly want to start your own grimoire so that your loved ones can be inspired by your life experiences.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and HarperOne for this advance readers copy, in exchange for an honest review. Grimoire Girl is an amalgamation of stories from author Hilarie Burton Morgan’s that reflect the magic she’s found in her life— moments from her past and present. All of this along with her tips and tricks on how she continues to infuse this magic into daily life, while also leaving a trail of it for others and for future generations to follow along the way. To say that I was excited to read this book is an absolute understatement and I cannot emphasize enough just how special and wonderful it truly is.
I tried to take my time to slowly read this book but, I could not put it down. You could really feel all of love, passion, and true magic that Hilarie infused into this book; it had such a genuine tone to it and this made the pages just fly for me. There were so many witchy stories and examples of how you could find magic in the ordinary because so much of it is already all around you— you just need to open your eyes to it. However, despite the plentiful beauty and enchantment that graces these pages, Hilarie does not shy away from sharing about her experiences with grief, loss, and the dark moments where it was hard to find the magic. This felt especially real to me for personal reasons and I think that Hilarie did a great job at leveling with the audience and being vulnerable with both her struggles and how she came out of it. I made lots of highlights in this story to come back to and know that it will be a title I can reach for repeatedly when inspiration or happy/sad/excited, etc. emotions come up.
I think it’s also worth noting the many great references that Hilarie makes in this book to other helpful resources, figures, and stories that you can look to for inspiration or for further reading. There were lots of items that I bookmarked while reading and I’m excited to go back to them!
Needless to say, I absolutely loved this book! I have a hardback copy on preorder already and can’t wait to have the physical copy to peruse again. I’d definitely recommend this book to fans of books about magic, witchcraft, and storytelling (to name a few things)!
I spent Monday nights in high school watching One Tree Hill & it saved me in so many ways. I loved Hilarie’s first book, Rural Diaries, so much that when I saw she was publishing a second, I knew I needed to get my hands on it!
“A Memoir of Magic & Mischief ” - I loved the way this book was laid out. Hilarie tells us, through stories of her own life, to create our own grimoire - collect pictures, trinkets, memories, etc - that can serve as memories & inspiration for our lives. At the end of every chapter, there was a “magic potion” recipe that put a fun spin on things. You can hear Hilarie’s enthusiasm & wisdom right through the pages as you’re reading & she creates a really special world to dive into.
I highly recommend this, & her first book Rural Diaries, if you like memoirs & if you’re a fan of Hilarie or One Tree Hill! I’m going to her book signing in a few weeks with @asolid_reads_it_all & I can’t wait!!
Back with another sincere and heart squeezing book, Hilarie Burton Morgan shows she’s a writer across multiple genres.
Weaving together her childhood experiences, love of being a mom and a wife, and dedication to learning about all things witchy and magic, Grimoire Girls takes the reader on a magical journey through inheritance, tradition, and legacy.
Burton Morgan shares incredible stories and tips for creating your own grimoire. Every other chapter includes directions for a simple spell ranging from candle magic to letter writing to ghosts.
This book reminded me of sitting on the couch listening to my favorite auntie share her knowledge about life. It’s endearing and thought-provoking.
I didn’t really connect with it. I wanted to like it, but it was just kind of middle of the road for me, 2.5/5 stars. Also there were a lot of lists lol … types of flowers and their meanings, different planets and their meanings, different gods and goddess and their meanings etc.
Phew, Hilarie knows how to deal a gut punch. Tears and laughs all rolled into one. I can’t wait to add a little more mischief and witchery into my life 🧙🏻♀️
She has been part of the inspiration I’ve had in the past few years to explore a witchy side of myself, and not feel shame from the religious side of myself. This only fueled that fire
This was my first experience reading Hilarie, as I didn’t read her debut book “The Rural Diaries”. This one aligned more with my interests, and I’ve been a fan of hers since I was a teenager and first saw her as Peyton on “One Tree Hill”. I’m not sure what I was expecting with this book, but my expectations were surely exceeded. There’s something about her tone of writing that feels infinitely wise, but never condescending. It felt like she was in the room with me while I was reading. Thank you, Hilarie — this one got me through a very difficult time in my life. I felt myself becoming softer, smoothed out, as I read and read. I found myself emotional many times in these pages. I will return to this — for the recipes and the wisdom of softness.
I confess I had never heard of Hilarie Burton, never watched an episode of One Tree Hill, and came across this book as a passing reference on social media, then Googled it, decided it sounded interesting enough to nab a copy, opened it, and fell in love with her voice and perspective. I enjoyed this book so much that I ordered her other one, Rural Diaries, halfway through reading it, secure I will love that one as well. A hybrid of anecdotes from her life and career, advice and tips on being your authentic self, enjoying your life and prioritizing your relationships, recipes and how-tos for various foods and drinks and crafts, and spells and rituals, Grimoire Girl is basically a love letter to living life on your own terms and as large as you can manage. I found it an inspiring and fun read.
Do I love Hilarie Burton or what? Loved this Grimore- which I had no idea the meaning of until I picked the book up. I initially had interest in this book for Hilarie alone. However, her continued collection of stories and sharing parts of herself kept me hooked in this novel. Her collection of recipes, stories, and history were intriguing and enjoyable. The witchy ideas she’s incorporated into her daily life were fun to learn about, and of course perfect for an October read. In addition to her previous book, Rural Diaries, this gives you a look into the people, places & things that helped shape Hilarie into the wife, mother, friend, and person she is. It also encourages you to make your own grimore! Thank you NetGalley for my ARC.
Although I only gave it 3 ⭐️ I do have to say that the underlying message of leaving a grimoire about the important collections in your life for all your loved ones to read and discover is truly beautiful. Remember to ask the important questions to those who matter to you and have honest conversations about what fills your cup and feeds your life.
One of my favs of the year. This book really lit me on fire (as did her last in a different way). I have so many books, poems, quotes and ideas I want to explore from this book. Honestly will probably just read it again immediately.
I feel a little bad rating this so low because it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t for me. However, there were a number of one-liners, gems, and pearls of wisdom I was happy to virtually highlight and save.
2.5 stars. If you’re not into witchy things or a big Hilarie Burton fan this probably isn’t for you. There are some good anecdotes and takeaways, but overall I struggled to really get into it.
grimoire girl is a memoir, a collection of ways in which hilarie hopes to be remembered and what she’s choosing to (hopefully) pass on to the people she loves.
i absolutely loved and adored the rural diaries. it sits proudly on my shelf of books that claimed a piece of my heart. so i immediately pre-ordered grimoire girl, expecting to bawl my way through this magical piece of work as well. however, i found myself disappointed.
the chapters are short, and although the topics could have been things i related to, they seemed to sit on the surface, never really delving deeper outside of quick anecdotes. i cried in the preface and last chapter, but everything between that read more like a how-to, with a bunch of lists, that i found myself quite bored.
i love witchy, magical things, and the book itself is absolutely stunning with the illustrations. but it just wasn’t the book for me.
What a magical journey Hilarie Burton Morgan took me on, and there was no better way to go through this the first time than enjoying the audiobook and hearing her passionately and charismatically deliver each portion of this grimoire.
Her ability to have a continuous thread of meaning throughout the entire collection and to gently tie it in is incredible. I enjoyed exploring the mystical and wonderful sides of life and how important it is to acknowledge the past, present, and future parts of ourselves and pass those on to our children.
I look forward to picking up a hard copy of this one and filling its margins with all of my notes as I too begin my own grimoire. Thank you for reawakening my witchy side.
I love Hilarie. I loved her first book but this one made my heart swell and every part of my witchy soul feel at home. Maybe I’m biased because I spent a summer in Wilmington and feels like my memories and nostalgia understand her completely. Or that I still hold our very brief encounter in Wilmington airport (can you call it that with a whopping 8 gates) with baby Gus getting sick on her and she quietly asked a small nobody at a car rental agency for some paper towel to clean up. I never want to met another famous person because my experience with her was so normal and human but at the same time created a core memory for a poor college grad trying to figure it out. Her writing embodies that memory for me blissfully wonderfully human. Sending all the love out to Mischief Farm.
