The Snow Knows

The paperback edition of the award-winning hide-and-seek picture book exploring the wild animals of winter. In this deceptively simple children's picture book, a pair of award-winning storytellers share the joys of winter. A lyrical prose poem, The Snow Knows introduces readers of all ages to animals both domestic (a tabby cat by the wood stove) and wild (a slinking lynx; a choir of coyotes), celebrating wilderness and outdoor play. Now available in paperback, the 2017 Marillyn Baillie Award-winning book for best Canadian children's picture book is destined to become a perennial winter favourite for a whole new audience. An award-winning children's author from Moncton, New Brunswick, Jennifer McGrath has published two middle-grade adventure novels, and two picture books. The Snow Knows was the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award, presented to the year's best Canadian picture book for children.

Josee Bisaillon's illustrations just wowed me right from the start. I mean, just look at that cover! The soft pastels of the shades of snow are contrasted with bold tree trunks, foliage, grasses, and numerous animals. Jennifer McGrath's text consists of a lyrical poem filled with alliteration and some rhymes. The snow knows is a refrain that is repeated throughout.

This a beautifully illustrated picture book with a winter’s lullaby about nature, wildlife and the snow. I picked this up as a Christmas gift for a friend’s child and I couldn’t resist reading it. I would definitely recommend this book.

Nothing wrong with it, but I found it boring. Except when the illustration showed the owl full-face and close - I actually almost jumped! Included coyote and fox among other creatures. No actual science, just poetic language and pretty-ish pictures.
