The Duke's arms went around her and before Tamara realized what was happening his lips were on hers.. For a moment she was still in surprise, then she felt a sudden rapture so wonderful that she knew this was what she had been seeking. "Oh my darling," the Duke said hoarsley. "Ilove you" "I..Love you!" she whispered. Then, even as she spoke she remembered the unforgettable things she had written about him before she had come to love him. An icy hand gripped her heart as she tore herself from his embrace and raced suddenly to her room...

The heroine pretends to be the governess of her orphaned nephew and nieces so she can accompany them to their uncle, the Duke.
She has never met the current Duke who is the older brother of her brother in law, because, the old Duke, disowned his younger son when he married the heroine’s sister. This Duke seems to disapprove of them just as much as his father.
They arrive at the castle, and it seems they were not expected, and the Duke is annoyed to find himself straddled with his brothers orphans, but he has no choice and puts them up. At first, even the servants treat the heroine and the children quite shabbily.
The heroine is intelligent and far from a pushover, she fights for her charges and even confronts the Duke a few times. Things change when the Duke also starts treating them a little better, but he is still far from being welcoming.
It is here where it lost a star. The relationship between the Duke and the heroine never really developed. I’m used to the insta-love happenings in Barbara Cartland books, but this one seemed very abrupt. For most part the Duke ignores the heroine and the children, only encountering them at random times. It is often mentioned that the heroine is very beautiful, so we can infer that the Duke was attracted to her. But unlike many other of her books, there were no long conversation or dinners together, which would have developed more rapport between them.
Towards the end, the Duke gets into an accident and it is feared that he will be paralyzed. Conveniently, a healer known to the heroine arrives and is able to heal the Duke. The Duke is very grateful and after he confesses that he has been attracted to the heroine from the start but was fighting it. He also knows she is the Aunt of the children and not just a governess.
There are many loose ends because supposedly the Duke is not well liked by his tenants as he is ruthless and uncompromising like his father, although he promises to change. It is never revealed who tried to hurt or kill him, which is why he had the accident.
Also, the heroine has written a book about an evil Duke based on him, so she confesses that she is the author in the end, but of course the Duke forgives her since he is in love with her.
Was just ok, but could have been so much better. The heroine was fantastic, unfortunately the Hero was a cardboard cutout, sort of like a minor character. There was more happening w the heroine and the children than w the Hero.
