Horror Library, Volume 3

Rate this book
Horror Library Volume 3 is an anthology containing 30 horror stories by both well-known and not-so-well- known writers. Within the pages of this volume the reader will find a barn that has the strange and terrifying ability to digest things that get trapped inside. They will stop at a way station where the dead briefly linger before continuing on to the afterlife.

The reader will become involved in a poker game where the chips represent time that the gambler has left to live and to win is to gain life, but to lose could mean instant death. They will meet an anorexic woman who knows a disturbing truth that prevents her from eating and a hospital photographer will take a picture that will haunt him for the rest of his life. These are just a few of the stories in this book and it is one of the best anthologies that I have had the pleasure to read all year.

Within the pages of Horror Library III the reader will find very few of the canned monsters we all have come to know, such as vampires and werewolves. No, this volume holds several new nightmares that will draw the reader in and keep them wondering until it is too late. I would certainly recommend this 3rd volume of the Horror Library to anyone who likes well written tales of horror.

Contains: Violence, mild pedophilia, gore.

Continuing my review of HORROR LIBRARY anthologies. I’m a big fan of anthos in general, especially indie horror. These stories take chances. Some fail, some succeed, but it’s exciting to read new ideas and voices. Publisher Dark Moon Books has taken over the HORROR LIBRARY series and re-released the older volumes that were put together by former publishers and editors (Cutting Block Books and Cavender). I received an ARC of the new re-released 2021 edition from Dark Moon Books.

Quick star rating on each story included in Volume #3 (29 total), just as my personal preference:

“Them” by Sunil Sadanand = 4 stars. I disliked this story, but it had a great, twist ending that made it all worthwhile
“Ashes of the Dead” by Kurt Dinan = 4 stars. Heartfelt, tragic, well written. Even angels fall.
“The Orange Mammoth” by Matthew Lee Bain = 3 stars. Okay story. Hated the ending… there was no explanation why he was targeted or comeuppance against those responsible…
“The River Child” by R. Michael Burns = 5 stars. Weird, in a good way. Japanese mythology meets the homeless.
“The Station” by Bentley Little = 5 stars. So good.
“Short Stacked” by Rodney J. Smith = 5 stars. I wasn’t sure where this was going, but then the ending made it all clear. Poker with the dearest of stakes…
“After” by Kealan Patrick Burke = 5 stars. Well written, bullied school boy comes back for what he thinks is revenge…
“Consumed” by Michael Louis Calvillo = 2 stars. Just didn’t like. Gross; not really my cup of tea.
“Under the Bridge Downtown” by Gary A. Braunbeck and Matthew Warner = 2 stars. Hated this story… Why! Why did so much bad happen to grieving father???
“Being Supreme” by Mark Justice = 5 stars. Great story of “God Complex”
“Clover” by Gina Ranalli = 3 stars. Hell’s punishment to a child predator.
“Guarded” by Michael A. Arnzen = 4 stars. Near future security is not a good thing.
“The Review” by Rick Moore = 5 stars. Great story, went a dark but reflective direction. Funny, yet tragic at the same time.
“Teeth” by A.C. Wise = 2 stars. Okay, but another, not my cup of tea.
“When the Skies Toss Down Rain Heavy” by Eric Grizzle = 3 stars. Okay… felt there should have been more.
“Obsidian Sea” by Kurt Kirchmeier = 4 stars. Quick and simple and horror on several different levels!
“Masks and Shadows” by Cullen Bunn = 5 stars. This story went dark, dark, and then darker….
“Extra Innings” by John Peters = 5 stars. Loved this one. Devil’s game, and I felt the pressure.
“The Living World” by C. Michael Cook = 3 stars. Okay, but not memorable.
“Fish Bait” by John Everson = 5 stars. Another one, I loved. Great setup, action, closure.
“Toll” by Blu Gilliand = 5 stars. This one was deep and traumatizing. Deeply imaginative and well executed.
“The Steel Church” by Charles Colyott = 4 stars. Military sci-fi and religion… Okay.
“The Apocalypse Ain’t So Bad” by Jeff Strand = 5 stars. Jeff Strand rocks it. 1st person POV of post-apocalyptic adventures with a smile!
“The Rhythm Method” by Mikal Trimm = 3-1/2 stars. I hated this story until the ending, which made up (mostly) for it.
“Her Dead Oceans” by Lorne Dixon = 3 stars. Just didn’t really get this one…
“Golden Eyes” by Lisa Morton = 5 stars. Environmental horror, animals vs. people. The twist at the ending was “Killer”!
“The Haven” by John Palisano = 4 stars. Sad, atmospheric.
“The Birdie” by Stephen Couch = 4-1/2 stars. This had a lot going on for it. The ending felt kind of forced and a lot of the character decisions were unbelievable, but it had heart.
“Blink the Blood Away” by R.M. Ridley = 3 stars. Okay closing story. Strange.

My favorite volume in the series, so far (i.e. each volume keeps getting better than the last!). Another one with a variety of ideas, taking chances, and lots of great writing!

Another excellent volume in the +HORROR LIBRARY+ series. So many great stories, it's hard to pick favorites, but here are some that appealed most to me: I absolutely loved “Extra Innings” by John Peters; “Fish Bait” by John Everson; “Toll” by Blu Gilliand; “Ashes of the Dead” by Kurt Dinan; and OF COURSE, “The Station” by Bentley Little... really anything Bentley writes is worth the cost of admission. Also “Golden Eyes” by Lisa Morton and “The Haven” by John Palisano and “Short Stacked” by Rodney J. Smith... this might be my favorite volume so far in the HORROR LIBRARY series! Keep 'em coming!

I'd really have given this one a 2.5, if that was an option: it was okay, with some exceptional stories - enough to make the whole read worthwhile. For me, the stories that stand out were (in ToC order): A.C. Wise - "Teeth"; C. Michael Cook - "The Living World"; Jeff Strand - "The Apocalypse Ain't So Bad"; R.M. Ridley - "Blink The Blood Away." Any one of these is worth seeking out to read.

A great anthology, not full of poorly written filler with a couple of big name authors.
