Wow, I enjoyed this a lot! I was a little nervous going in because I knew this book was inspired by the story of Joseph and I was afraid it would be too predictable because of that. But that wasn't the case at all. While there are certain story beats that are very similar to Joseph's, this is truly only inspired by his story. Sharon Hinck has created an immersive world that makes everything feel fresh and new and adds details unique to Jolan's story that keep it from becoming an outright retelling.
Jolan was likable as a character from the start. She's on the younger side of adult, but has more life experience and maturity than many her age since she's already been married and widowed. I like a wide variety of heroine personality types because that's more realistic than them all being the same, but the spunky, hot-headed, warrior, "strong female heroine" is frequently overdone. It was refreshing to me that, while Jolan is certainly strong in spirit to have survived everything she did, she was a bit more of a gentle soul, not unlike Joseph from the Bible. She doesn't weild a weapon during this story and doesn't need to, because her God-given brains and diplomatic nature are her strengths. She's not a pushover either and will stand up for what's right, even against a king. I truly enjoyed seeing through her eyes and following her as she learned God's purpose for her life and for everything that happened to her.
Another element I really liked was the romance. It comes late in the story, but it's a lovely, sweet, slow burn where you see genuine friendship, respect, and affection develop between the couple long before it gets expressed physically. In fact, they don't even kiss until after they're married! Gasp! Exclamation point!😉😛
Overall, this was a very enjoyable read that I'm glad to have given a chance. Sharon Hinck is quickly becoming an author I consistently like and am coming to trust.
Content Advisory:
Sexual:
Occasional mentions that Jolan finds a man handsome, occasional fluttery romantic feelings, and occasional noticing of his muscular arms. These moments are brief and never overly focused on.
There is a romance during the story which results in a marriage, after which we have the couple interacting as husband and wife for the remainder of the story. Everything is kept clean, sweet, and without sexual details, though the couple's affection for each other is clear.
The only kissing is between a married couple and the descriptions are limited to a line or two at the absolute most.
When someone gets sent to prison, there's mention of the other prisoners making rude comments, but the comments are not written out.
The king of one country has multiple wives and briefly offers for Jolan to become one of them, but she refuses.
Violence:
Someone gets kidnapped via getting strangled unto unconsciousness and tied up before being sold into slavery. As a slave they sometimes slapped or shoved.
In an act of execution, some prisoners in a jail are killed by soldiers. Jolan only hears the deaths in other parts of the prison vs actually seeing them happen. (Mention of moans. No gross description.) Someone gets stabbed and dies in her arms. There is a brief mention of blood.
There is an attempted poisoning, threats, and accusations of poisoning.
Spiritual:
This is Christian fiction heavily inspired by the biblical story of Joseph, so there are many references to God (called The Provider in this story), faith, prayer, etc.
Jolan's job is dream teller. She and people like her have a gift from God (The Provider) where they can see people's dreams, even if the person doesn't remember the dream themselves, and interpret them with God's help.
Magic:
None. Some people would consider this story a "kingdom fantasy" because it's set in a world that is different from our own, but there is no magic. There is a brief mention of an ice dragon in someone's dream, but this turns out to be representative of a storm, not a real fantasy creature. There are multiple races of people in the story that are not human, but the differences between them and humans are physical. For example, one race has different splotches of color on their skin. One race is very small. One has eyes that change colors with their emotions. Etc.
Other:
Adults drink alcohol sometimes, in private and socially.
