An atmospheric fantasy series for bibliophiles and fans of Japanese ghost stories-based on the light novels also published by Seven Seas!
Ever since she was three years old, Kaori has lived in a bookstore where the boundaries between the mortal realm and the spirit realm are blurred. Her adoptive father, who lives with her in this magical space, is a spirit himself. One day, Kaori comes across a bleeding young man who has stumbled into the spirit realm just as she did when she was a small child. Though the young man is an exorcist who has vowed revenge against all spirits, Kaori decides to embrace kindness and help him find his way back home.
I LOVED the beginning of this volume so much, but I felt very confused when it ended. I felt it ended at such a strange spot that I had to double check that I didn't miss or skip any pages.
Besides that though, this was another good volume! The beginning was especially emotional because as someone who is an adult with kids and wasn't able to graduate and pursue my major, I really felt the line/quote if you're not something as an adult does that make you nothing? And with that, how kid Kaori encouraged her father that she would always be there so that she could see him pursue what his special something was. Seeing that unfold similarly in my life had me more than almost tearing up because this series has some of the best reflective moments I've read recently. Just when you think it's about Kaori living with spirits and helping loan out books, it becomes so much more than that!
While this volume was not my favorite, I do think it was a critical one for Kaori. Seeing how books have affected spirits and caused them to live in the spirit realm rather than the human realm I think crushed her in a way that truly could have led to depression. However, the Raven Twins being amazing as they are, one of them specifically shows her how her books are helping spirits and how spirits are still very real to many humans. Maybe it wasn't what it used to be, but she should never give up on her dream or her job of sharing books with others.
another very emotional volume!! this one explores the consequences of a modern world and how, as books and belief evolved, spirits were driven out of the human world and back into the spirit world.
ginme has a really adorable bonding moment with kaori...I feel like that is going to end in sadness though, since she and suimei seem like endgame.

This volume felt like a cozy slice-of-life book. Suimei is settling into daily life in the spirit realm and Kaori is working and running errands for her adoptive dad and hanging out with her friends.
I hadn’t realized this wasn’t a reread when I was reading it, haha. 😅 Same old, same old. I’m assuming the final volume will also carry us along with more of the same.
