Not particularly memorable and doesn't have much in terms of original takes to recommend it, but it follows Madame de Villeneuve's outline, which I always appreciate as refreshing on its own because the norm is Beaumont's outline.

It was a lovely story and I think anyone who loves retellings of fairy tales would love it. It's based on Beauty and the Beast and I must say it was enjoyable but....I had a few problems; it was too short, therefore, less focused on character development but if you're reading just for the sake of a good retelling to enjoy your favourite fairy tale in a new version, I'm sure you'll love it.

A huge shout-out to Julie at One Book More as it was her cool review that had me adding this to my TBR instantly.

Once again, I am lured by the magic words, Beauty and the Beast. The retelling of this classic story always ALWAYS manages to grab my attention and it says something about my interest that I have almost 3 more books with the same theme in my ARC list.

Nancy O’Toole’s The Rose and The Claw however uses the old tale in creating 2 characters that evoke sympathy and compassion. Rose is a Verdian widow who wants to give back her soldier husband’s arms to his mother and help his soul in the afterlife. But her arrival to Kelvia takes an unexpected turn with the people being agonistic, the major reason being that Kelvians and Verdians have been at war with each other for many years. Forced into the cursed magical Rosewood Manor as a caretaker, Rose begins to see the man hidden behind the mask of the beast.

Rose is such a vibrant and colorful character that I couldn’t help but cheer her on at every scene. Her dialogue banter with Kris was one of the highlights of this novella with Kris being his genteel best. The romance is lighter but the affection and the warmth of friendship that develops between Kris and Rose were exciting and endearing. The story takes a different turn with the background of war and the turbulence of politics of 2 countries and having both Kris’s and Rose’s points of view thru the story gives a different perspective to the tale of intrigue and mystery surrounding the castle of Rosewood Manor.

Scintillating, perfect for fans of the tale as old as time☔☔☔☔☔

4.5 stars!

How good was this book especially for such a short novel of only 140 pages?? I loved it! 😍

#TheRoseAndTheClaw is a #BeautyAndTheBeast retelling with a twist... or rather with many twists and also many I didn't see coming.
There are two kingdoms at war, beastly soldiers, magic going rampant and a not so innocent female lead - Rose was a far cry from an innocent young maiden needing saving and I was here for it. 😝
And Kris who is our Beast... I don't think he was too different from the original Beast as we know it from the Disney story. He also has a much kinder heart than his appearance might let on. The only difference is probably his backstory and how every once in a while he looses control over his Beast, both of which are much darker than the Disney tale.😉

In conclusion, this story may have been short, but in my opinion it was very well paced, it didn't feel rushed, the characters were likeable and the story surprised me in many ways, which is always a good sign. The half a star deduction is given, because I was a little confused about the magic and what it did in the end of this story.

A layered and immersive novella with dynamically developed characters, suspense, and a bit of political intrigue, The Raven and the Claw is a fantastic story! I love the supernatural elements, the world-building, and the new spin on the classic Beauty and the Beast tale.

The story switches between Kris and Rose’s perspectives, giving the reader a wider view of the story. Rose has suffered tremendous loss and is determined to set her husband’s spirit to rest. This proves difficult, as she is unwelcome in his country and is eventually forced to remain at the beast’s manor. Though Rose is already very wise, she learns so much about herself and others while captive at the manor, as does Kris. The reasons for Kris’s situation are very different from the beast in the classic fairy tale, which I found refreshing and intriguing. Kris has such a compelling story, and, like Rose, he struggles with grief. Guilt, fear, and regret weigh heavily on Kris, justifiably so. He’s a big cinnamon roll of a character, and I so wanted him to find happiness.

I’m a sucker for a great love story, and the slow-building romance between Rose and Kris is wonderful! Kris is so tormented by his situation and fears for Rose’s safety. Because of his situation, he keeps people at a distance, and he tries to do this with Rose, but Rose gets through his walls. She is intuitive, strong, and courageous, and she is one of the few people undaunted by the beast and the mysterious manor. She is also one of the only people who try to get to know Kris. She sees him for who he truly is, and the more time she spends with him, the more she likes him. Their blossoming love story is riddled with obstacles, but their growing bond could prove stronger than the problems that stand in their way.

The supernatural elements, the secrets of the manor, and the curse are mysterious, dark, and dangerous, which creates a suspenseful and ominous tone throughout the story. The post-war setting also adds tension to the story, as well as an added layer of intrigue. Rose is in an enemy country, and her treatment by many shows that animosity remains. Other revelations hint at possible political conflicts in future books in the series. However, the novella isn’t completely dark and ominous. Rose’s vibrant personality and the growing relationship between her and Kris brings optimism and hope to the story.

I highly recommend The Rose and the Claw especially if you enjoy well-paced and well-written fantasy-romance novellas with great characters and intriguing supernatural elements. I can’t wait to read the next story in the series! Thanks so much to Nancy O’Toole for a copy of the novella in exchange for my honest review.

The story was well thought but lacked structure....
There were so many times when I didn't understand what was happening.....
The parts that should've had more focus and been more laid out faded in the background....

Mixed feelings, but a good twist

Book's greatest strength: I definitely enjoyed the twist/curse explanation. It kept me on me guessing, even as new information was revealed.
Pacing: I often felt a bit thrown into things, especially at the beginning. There's one chapter that starts with a flashback, but I didn't understand what was going on for a little bit.
Characters: I liked Kris, but Rose was a little harder to pin down. She's supposed to have an accent, so she would occasionally use slang and casual speech, but it was inconsistent and hard to really hear her voice.
Worldbuilding: The two kingdoms are really interesting, and for a Novella it's filled with a rich culture, even a created religion that sounds really cool. But unfortunately, sometimes the wrong country would be mentioned (like the time a character was described as "a typical Verdian" but was a Kelvian and given all of the features we were repeatedly told were Kelvian). It made it a bit confusing and I would have to re-read the sentence to see if it Really meant what it Said.
Romance: I'm not sure I'd call it a romance. Some feelings were implied, but the relationship was more platonic.

This novella is a re-telling of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. I absolutely adored it. It wasn't very long but still I read it all in one go.

What I liked about it is the fact that as readers we switch from the Beauty's perspective to the Beast's perspective. It was really fun and interesting to watch how the development went on both sides.

I also liked that it didn't follow perfectly all the events of the original story.

It was very good and I was sorry that it wasn't longer. I feel that it would have deserved to be a full novel in order to develop the world a bit more. The world the story happens in seems really interesting and I would have liked to know more about it.

If you like twisted fairy tales, this is truly one of the good ones.

I love Beauty and the Beast retellings, and this book had enough similarities to clearly fit with the original but enough differences to make it unique. My favorite character was Kris (aka the Beast). He was so kind and respectful and torn between his desire to protect Rose and his desire to keep her for himself. He and Rose fit together really well—with Kris being a softer character and Rose being more outspoken—and had a beautiful friendship. However, this book sounded more like a story of friendship than romance. Though Kris found Rose very beautiful, there were really no other mentions of romantic feelings or chemistry.

The plot was well paced, but it was pretty confusing at certain points. I never fully understood how the curse and the manor worked. The ending was also disappointing. The conclusion was abrupt and I didn’t feel like the main relationship was tied up successfully. There would’ve been greater emotional depth to the book if there had been more side characters who were friends with at least one of the main characters. The book just seemed a bit emotionally stale.

Overall, this was a nice retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I recommend it to those who are more interested in the fantasy and mystery side of the story than the romance.

*I received an ARC of this novella. This is my complete and honest review.*

I am a huge fan of retellings, so picking up The Rose and the Claw was an easy choice. I had some trepidation as there are many Beauty and the Beast retellings out there. This story gave me no reason to worry as, although it was short, it was a very refreshing and unique take on the tale. Similar to the source material, the two characters are brought together where they are originally nervous around the other and begin to learn more through a forced proximity setting. However, this story takes it a step further with the backgrounds of each character to create mystery and sympathy for each.

Our beauty in this story is a recent widower named Rose Gardner. She is from Verdia and is on a mission to carry her deceased husband, Martin’s, arms back to the place of his birth to guide his soul to his final resting place. To do this, her journey leads to the village of Farrow in the kingdom of Kelvia. She runs into problems when the Kelvians do not welcome her with open arms due to the on-going war between the nations. The village headman, Garrick, orchestrates Rose to become the new caretaker at Rosewood Manor where she must care for the village beast, Kris, a cursed wolf-man-beast.

Kris and Rose have amazing interactions with each other leading to a very slow burn romance developing between them. The story switches between each of their perspectives, which I loved as not only did it give insights into their feelings for the other, but also into their takes on the war between their nations. Additionally, each character is dealing with their own obstacles and it was nice to read about their inner thoughts. Kris fears for Rose’s safety, especially, when he is at his most dangerous, but also wants to keep her around. Rose has an ability to get Kris to let his guard down and the two of them slowly get to know about the other. In turn, Rose is torn between her past as a recent widower and her new feelings for Kris.

The supernatural elements surrounding Kris and the manor itself were well done and suspenseful. For being a shorter novella, I was surprised at how many twists and turns the author was able to include while still making sense with the story. The characters and world were also more complex than I expected as each were well developed. Of course, I would have loved more since the story was very interesting, but I was also okay with the length as-is. Many of the mysteries are slowly revealed, so the reader finds out some at the same time as the characters. At times, this can be frustrating, but in the mysterious context of the story, I preferred it this way.

Overall, this was a very captivating read. The ending is not fully conclusive as it is not a straight-forward happily ever after and everything is wrapped up in a bow. Instead, it is a satisfying ending and there is room left to continue the series. If the reader chose to read this as a standalone, I think it would work well on its own. If the reader chooses to continue, then it also works. This type of ending I enjoy in the series as it is not a cliffhanger that “forces” as a reader to read the next novel nor is it fully conclusive that the next novel does not tie into the first. For me, I am very excited to read about Rebecca and Zahir (two characters that the reader meets in this story) in the next novel in the Twin Kingdoms series, A Dance with Magic, which will be a retelling of Twelve Dancing Princesses.

**I give a special thank you to Book Sirens and the author, Nancy O’Toole, for the opportunity to read this entertaining novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**

4.5

It’s a tale as old as time…. sorry, couldn’t resist. Beauty and the Beast happens to be one of my favourite fairy-tales and there is nothing I love more than a good retelling that takes some risks by adding new and exciting elements to it.

In the case of The Rose and the Claw, we have the story we know and love, but with some updating to fit in with the current mind-sets.First, our Belle is named Rose, and she’s not some naïve teen girl. She is older and widowed. Her stint in the beast’s manor is not in a trade for her father, or any kind of scenario where the beast is holding her prisoner (neatly sidestepping the whole Stockholm syndrome problem).Rose is in the village of Farrow, to return her late husband’s arms to his mother- a tradition that lets him move on and be at peace in death. Having to stay in town longer than she had planned, she gets ramrodded into being the caretaker of Rosewood Manor by the villagers (The villagers have made a pact, if they send a caretaker to Rosewood they no longer need to provide the war with the quota of men required which is a huge help to their small and dwindling population) this gives her a partner’s in difficulty, kind of relationship with the beast/Kris instead of prisoner/captor.

I really enjoyed this story because it keeps its core but spruces up the story with a cool and interesting magic, set in a world that leaves lots of room to expand the universe with other fairy-tales. This is probably a good time to mention this is the first in a series of tales that work in this world.

I loved Rose. I loved her no-nonsense manner and her attitude of well, this is how it is, so let’s make the best of it. She’s capable, smart and has a kind heart, and I never once doubted she wasn’t strong enough to take care of the manor, deal with the ghosts, the beast, or the mystery at the heart of the curse.

Kris’s pov was also enjoyable.

Rose meets Kris at his lowest. He’s weak, still changed from the curse (Which seems a bit like a werewolf idea but he’s not human during the wan time of the moon) and fearful that he has killed the last caretaker. It’s not an auspicious start to their relationship.

Because the story is in alternating pov’s we get to see a lot of him, and understand his pain and see him opening up his heart to Rose.

The magic is creative and I loved the idea that spells leave a magical by-product. In the case of the beast his studies over the years have accumulated by-product to the area. Turning the whole house and grounds into a sort of magical bubble that interacts to some degree with the users.

The shifting house scenes were very cool, along with the scenes of the past that haunted some of the rooms. It gave the whole places such a creepy feeling, but sad at the same time. It was also a really neat way to catch the reader up on the past events.

I enjoyed this a lot and sped through it very quickly. Honestly, I would have been happy with a full-size story because it was so good and as a novella the end felt a little bit rushed.I am very curious to see how later stories will fit into this world.

If you’re a fan of Beauty and the Beast, then you'll definitely want to add this fun and imaginative retelling to your reading list.

This was a nice, short read. I was really expecting it to be much longer, but it was pleasant anyway. I didn't really like that it was in first person, since I didn't like either of the character's talking styles too much. I guess I understand why it, but it just didn't do it for me.

I also think I wanted there to be just more book. Maybe spend a longer time on how they broke the curse, or on anyone's backstory. Maybe bring Susannah back for a round even. I understood the whole entire story, but I really wished it was more complicated. I liked it well enough, but I was expecting it to be much better.

The magic and kingdom backstory seemed to be really well thought out, I would have liked for it to play out a little bit more. I don't necessarily need an explanation of the magic systems, but maybe they could have figured out how to break a couple more spells before they got the big one? The whole plot was too quick and straightforward for me. I at least appreciate that most of the characters connected.

Actually, another thing I would have liked would be to actually start around Martin's death. I could have seen how she travelled (it sounded like an interesting journey) and how she met her in-laws. It would even be great to meet and fall in love with Martin myself so I could mourn his death with her for a couple pages. I was a little bit disappointed that the only time we met him was as a ghost by the magic of a manor that's known to be untrustworthy. Him appearing at the end as Rose and Kris walked away would have been so much more rewarding if I'd known him. It could have even been done in memories, the way most of the other backstory was given. Although I have to say, those parts were extremely confusing. Actually, I was confused with a lot of the dialogue, but that may have just been me.

The sister (Rebecca) showing up at the end seemed so random. Why didn't she come much earlier? How did she know it wasn't really a curse? What was going on?? I know it was to prepare me for the next book in the series, but I doubt it will be explained there either...

By the way, after I was introduced to both characters (so by the end of the second chapter) I realized I had read this exact relationship dynamic before. Rose and Kris remind me so much of Scarlet and Wolf from Marissa Meyer's Scarlet, it's wild.

The whole K name thing was strange, because it was a custom that the royal family didn't even follow, even though it was based on them? Why did Kris have a K name if he wasn't supposed to exist, but Carlisle didn't, even though he was the supposed first-born, on his way to becoming King? I guess it was in a way to show that Kris was going to become King eventually, but I feel like we knew that all along...? Also, Rose's name was Rose Gardner and nobody mentioned that? Incredible. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Anyway, that's really all. I don't have too many thoughts on this book, it was just too short.

If you've been reading more of my reviews you probably know that Beauty and the Beast is one of those fairytales I like and hate at the same time. I really love the retellings, what people do with the story, all the new variations people create. I'm not too fond of the Disney version of the tale. However, when I read what this book was about, it seemed the story was gonna be original and different and right up my alley. I therefore happily accepted the arc offered by BookSirens.

Even though this story isn't too long, it never feels rushed. O'Toole takes her time to explain the political situation in the Kingdom and even though she does use info dumps to do so we get a very clear idea of what's going on. That also goes for the characters, their history and background. Some is told through info dumps, some is shown through flashbacks, but it really helps to know what their lives looked like and who they have grown to be.

O'Toole for sure brings something new to the tale as old as time and I loved it. How the boy became the monster, how the girl finds herself in his house, taking care of him, how the curse eventually gets broken, it's all different from the original and well-known tale without it becoming something else completely. The backbone of the story is still there, the elements simply twisted or reinterpreted. It therefore is what you expect it to be, but in a slightly different form.

I also really loved O'Toole's writing style. I had never read one of her books before, but her writing style read easily without it seeming simple. It fit the setting and all the characters had a unique voice fitting their personality. And since their personalities were so different, their voices were too. Therefore it was quite easy to connect with the characters in the story and even easier to root for them, even though the book wasn't really focussing heavily on the romance.

I will certainly read the next book in the series, especially because I do love the twelve dancing princesses!

As everyone knows, I love Beauty and the Beast, and I am always up for reading any retelling based off that fairy tale.

This one is definitely a unique retelling of the fairytale and a quick read since this is a novella. Despite the fast read, it was very good. It was dark, and sweet, and just an all around good retelling of the fairytale.

Kris was a magician who basically cursed himself and lives in his manor. The people in the near village give him caretakers who take care of the manor and him. This time, they decide to give him Rose Gardner as a caretaker, a foreigner from their enemy lands to basically get rid of her. Rose is reluctant at first, of course, but in the end goes to the manor and begins life as caretaker there, and begins to learn the manor and the beast are not all that they may seem to be, and that there is more to everything in that manor.

I really liked Rose. She's so feisty and likes to get things done. She never cowers and is very brave. She is willing to listen and hear out the beast to find out what's going on and fix it. Kris on the other hand was a bit sad and dull to me. I mean I get that he's cursed and it's awful what he has to go through, and what he is going through, but in the end, I guess it was really him feeling sorry for himself the whole time and just making himself miserable. Which is why these two work so well together since Rose wasn't having any of it and basically got him to snap out of it.

There were some lovely twists in here that threw me for a loop, which I liked since I was confused at some parts until the end when everything was explained. Gotta love those twists! And they're even better when they get added into such a short story.

If you love retellings(especially Beauty and the Beast ones) then I think you would enjoy this quick novella! I received an advance review copy for free(thank you to BookSirens and the author), and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of The Rose and The Claw by Nancy O'Toole; I am leaving this review voluntarily.

When I saw the description for The Rose and The Claw, I knew I absolutely had to read it - Beauty and the Beast is in my top three favorite Disney movies, and I was so excited to read this retelling of it. It's also a novella, so it's a wonderful quick read.

Overall, I loved it! I thought that the way that O'Toole handled the curse was very interesting - I spent the entire book trying to figure out the puzzle with Rose (Beauty); and I'll admit I was a little frustrated that I couldn't fully solve the puzzle until Rose did. That is absolutely a me problem - I'm so used to figuring out the puzzles in books before the main character does, so while it did frustrate me a little, it also delighted me! I couldn't put it down, because I just wanted to know what happened.

There were parts of the novella that I felt could have been expanded on, a few places where I wish that I had had more context to what was happening, but it wasn't enough to ruin the book. I wish I could give a half star, because honestly it would have been a 4.5/5 stars for that alone, but it wasn't distracting enough to warrant 4 stars. And honestly, I knew it was a novella going in, so I knew there were going to be things that I wish had been expanded on or given more details.

Overall it was an amazing read, if you love Beauty and the Beast you absolutely should pick this up.

There were a few things I enjoyed about this one.

For one, the fact that they were both adults well into their lives was very refreshing to see, I loved Rose and Kris as characters.

A fine point in the book is that there is a clear line of communication, one of my biggest gripes in books is bad communication and the only problems they had in that department was a curse restricting Kris. There was an active attempt to communicate and we don't see that often in media.

When it comes to a fault I think there wasn't enough context: it's supposed to be a novella, I'm aware, but I think it could have done with a prolouge of Rose getting to the village. The story didn't feel like it started on the first chapter, it was almost as if we were thrown into the world mid story.

Other than that I think this was a great way to reimagine Beauty and the Beast, one of my favorite fairy tales. I would even read the next installment of the series.

If you're into short and sweet retellings of fairy tales, then this book is for you. At first I had difficulty getting into the groove of this book, I went into it blind, not knowing anything about it. As the story progressed, it became abundantly clear this was a retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale. I enjoyed Rose's character and her spirited attitude. When I first started reading it, I was expecting werewolves and couldn't figure out the whole "caretaker" situation until I kept reading, then it made sense and of course there were no werewolves per se; this of course wouldn't be an issue as most folks read the summary on the back or inside cover of a book and have an idea what to expect; I did not do this. I wanted to go into this experience with no biased expectations. I found it to be a quaint and enjoyable novella.

Beauty and the Beast retellings will never get old for me. I love seeing authors put their own spin on the “tale as old as time.” And The Rose and the Claw doesn’t disappoint! This novella definitely covers a lot of ground in a short number of pages. The world building was solid. There’s lots of twists and turns. There’s a fascinating war/political backstory that kept me guessing. But the characters were the true star power for me.

Rose is perfect: just the right amount of snark/bravery while still being a compassionate character. And Kris (aka, the beast) was so gentle and sweet. And the story of he became the beast was both devastating and unexpected. And the relationship was beautifully done! It progressed at just the right pace, never felt rushed, and I really felt these two characters falling in love!

I’d definitely recommend this one, especially to fellow Beauty and the Beast fans!

A different take on a retelling of The Beauty and The Beast, and I was here for it (and I normally don't do retellings and/or fairy tales). Kris is trapped at Rosewood Manor by magic, and his new caretaker, Rose, is supposed to keep an eye on him? Care for him... a beastly man-animal? That part of the story seemed weird, but it does circle around and make sense later. Rose is a tough woman, tell it like it is type, unlike the fair haired pale skin people in the nearby town. Kris starts to fall for her, but it's a subtle feeling, not a OMG I love this chick vibe. We see Rose start to fall for him too, and how the ending comes about was great. I had a good feeling about this book and I was right. Anyone who loves a retelling or fairy tale stories should definitely read this book!

Can't wait to read the rest of this series. #booksirens

Thanks to BookSirens and the publisher for providing me an ARC to share my honest review.

I love Beauty and the Beast retellings so I was hooked immediately. This is a novella so there is a lot of infodumping towards the end of the novel.

I did enjoy the plot but wish there was more exploration of the romance between Rose and Kris. There was much world building and information to take in in just over 100 pages.

I recieved a free copy of this book via booksirens in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this, it was a sweet but dark version of beauty of the beast. I liked the characters, they were different and developped well, especially Kris. The setting was beautiful, very enchanting. The curse was interesting, very different than any other I have read and I love beauty and the beast retellings.

Overall it was very good novella and looking to see what the next one brings.

The Rose and the Claw (The Twin Kingdoms #1) by Nancy O'Toole -- This is on kindle unlimited. This beast brought a curse upon himself, but the beauty trapped in his manor has unfinished business of her own. While trying to give her fallen soldier the peace he needs in a society that is driven by cycles of reincarnation, Rose finds herself trapped in a manor by the local sheriff. It’s an interesting world, so I will be on the next novella! Happy Reading!

This was one of the best retellings that I've read in awhile. I loved that Rose was not your stereotypical young Beauty. The development of the relationship between Rose and Kris was superb. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a clean romance! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

A fast read. The prose flowed seamlessly which I loved. Always loved Beauty and the Beast retellings. I like that it was not focused on true loves kiss to break the curse. But this book also shows how we can get into our own heads sometimes, which I have never really seen before. However, I wasn't completely drawn in by the story.

Not your normal Beauty and the Beast

A different telling of Beauty's and the Beast than I have ever read. Was a little confusing, but was still good.
