ON THE TOUGHEST REALITY SHOW ON TELEVISION A KILLER IS HIDING OUT OF SHOT
Frozen Out is set to be a TV sensation. On a small ship off the coast of Greenland, eight contestants will push themselves to breaking point for a £100,000 prize.
The show is Tori Matsuka's baby. After years working her way up the ladder, she's finally launching her own production company with Frozen Out, and the late nights, the debts, the strain on her relationship will all be worthwhile. Everything is riding on the next twelve days. For camerawoman Dee, it's a chance to start again after the tragedy that tanked her undercover journalism career. Not even Tori, her oldest friend, knows the full truth of why Dee left her previous job, and she plans to keep it that way.
But as errors and mishaps mount on set, tempers among the cast and crew start to fray. And when one of the contestants is found dead, only Dee realises the death wasn't natural - and from what she's seen from behind the camera, it won't be the last. As the Arctic ice closes in around them and all chance of escape is cut off, it becomes clear that although the world outside wants them dead, it's the secrets inside the ship that might cost them their lives.
Packed with suspense from the first page to the last, Freeze is a must-read for fans of Shiver, The Sanatorium and One By One. This thriller isn't just chilling: it's sub-zero.
#Frozen Out - A reality television programme. Eight leaders, seven Arctic challenges, one ship and a prize pot of £100k for the best leader amongst them.
Hi, I’m Tori Matsuka, your glamorous host and Co owner of Tori Tells Stories, a production company and I’m desperate this programme succeeds as it’s taken a financial toll.
Hi, I’m Dee, Tori’s oldest friend and I’m the director/in charge of camera action. I’ve also got a lot riding on this as my career has suffered a tragic setback.
So, the scene is set but problem number one arises with the potential eight contestants down to six with some substitutions. They arrive in Greenland to possible problem two as the boat is not exactly what Tori has in mind or thought they are getting. That my friends, is the tip of the iceberg as far as problems go as Tori and Dee narrate.
First of all, I’m sure we can all work out what you’re going to get in this plot! Yes, you guessed a locked boat mystery and mayhem in an isolated place, very much a popular theme right now. The two main characters are interesting and neither are what they seem. Right from the start, Dee is in self protection mode and as for Tori, her issues emerge later. The contestants, as on any reality show, are a very mixed bag and are there for a variety of reasons which becomes apparent further down the line. The dynamics between them fluctuate between explosive and disinterest which is entertaining.
The remote, breathtaking wilderness of Greenland is good but could have been utilised way more than it is and become a more sinister backdrop. The somewhat dilapidated and gloomy boat location does add a frisson of uncertainty and suspicion to proceedings.
Unfortunately, the book is very slow to get going and though it does ramp up it never achieves high octane levels. The characters are not especially likeable which I don’t mind but they’re not all well fleshed out. The plot doesn’t flow as well as it could, it’s disjointed at times and convoluted. There is some tension but it doesn’t reach the intensity it should and some of the drama that takes place just feels too convenient.
Overall, this latest novel by Kate Simants certainly has good elements but in my opinion is not as good as her last two books.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Serpent’s Tail/Viper/ Profile Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this one, as I suspected I would, as there’s just something about a locked in thriller that really engages me.
From the first chapter you could feel the tension in this one and that only amped up with each chapter that passed, and more secrets coming to the surface. Dee and her best friend Tori (the show’s presenter) find out that things have changed in their show, new cast members that they didn’t vet are suddenly on there, and as we move further into the story Dee uncovers more things that Tori’s fiancé has been hiding from her. Corners have been cut to save money and the boat they’re on is much smaller than expected, and is unable to break through ice so they’re inevitably stranded with a killer onboard the ship.
I flew through this one very quickly and enjoyed every second of it.
Thank you to Viper for sending me a proof of this one.
Tori and Dee head out to Greenland to film Frozen Out – a new and exciting show featuring eight leaders, seven Arctic challenges, one ship, and £100k winner.
Tori is the show’s presenter and is also engaged to its executive producer, Will. Dee is a camerawoman and Tori’s best friend. Dee used to work undercover and it soon becomes apparent that something went terribly wrong during her last assignment. As a result, Dee suffers from ill mental health and currently lives with Tori.
Once the women arrive in Greenland, it becomes clear that things aren’t what they supposed to be: the ship is rusty, much smaller than anticipated, and isn’t an icebreaker – meaning that they might become icebound. Dee starts discovering little things about the show’s production that Will has kept secret from Tori.
It’s not just the ship that’s wrong, there has been last minute changes to the show’s contestants and it appears that Will has cut many corners money-wise.
Dee’s worst fears are confirmed when someone tries to push Tori overboard and one of the contestants ends up dead… There is a killer on the ship. But who is it?
This book gripped me right from the start with its frightening prologue, all the way to its explosive ending.
I loved the tension between the contestants (there was one I really struggled with – Wolf, who was a truly despicable character), the secrets they all kept, and the eerie atmosphere on the ship. I enjoyed finding out Tori’s and Dee’s back story and how it all related to the book.
This is a tense, icebound, locked-in thriller that will keep you guessing all the way to the end.
This had the potential to be a fantastic isolated location thriller - a group of people with a whole lot of secrets take part in a reality show in the Arctic. However, the execution lets the premise down. I thought the setting was excellent, and the impending bad weather just adds an extra level to the drama. Its just that everything else was off. The cast & crew of the reality show were so unlikeable and were hiding so many secrets, the plot became so convoluted. I love stories with unlikeable characters, but I need a reason to either cheer for them or for their opponent. In this story I didn’t really have that, and by the time I did, I didn’t care.
Thanks to Viper & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If not for the many, many, many poor decisions in booking this trip having in mind saving money instead of investing in security and Tori being such a stuborn stupid and selfish woman, I'd give this book another star. As for the rest, it was an interesting plot and the Greenland setting was awesome. I was confused the whole time about in which direction things were going. We have here 2 female main characters: Tori and Dee, each with their own separate phantoms to deal with. The strange things happening in the ship are related to one of them? If so, to which one of the women? I found the solution far-fetched but ok.
I didn’t gel with this book. I found it a struggle. The first chapter was intriguing, and I was looking forward to seeing how that story intertwined with the rest of the book. Sadly, though, the first half of the book was slow. The characters were annoying. The book got very far-fetched very quickly and was a bit silly. I mean, you are on a boat for a TV show, and there have been a few attempts at murder, and even after the first actual murder, the attitude was don’t worry about it; there is still a show to record. Let's go do a fun activity with the locals. Oh, there were people helicoptering in to help with the activities, and even radio contact in the beginning, but yeah, not a problem; no point asking them for help. They all just ignore the murders on board, pop the bodies in the hold, and carry on with fun stuff like a husky ride. Even the huskies in this book were dangerous, aggressive beasts, so yeah, great research there.
This was a Christmas gift from my 83 year old dad. I wanted to read this one at this time of year when it’s cold outside so I could really imagine the atmosphere. It’s a great psychological thriller which has a lot of suspense and tension. It kept me guessing and turning the pages to the very end. Good choice dad !
I'm always a sucker for a book that has a group of people getting cut off somewhere. And when you add in some snow, I'm even more interested. So, having seen this book in my library, I thought I'd give it a go. I did find this to be quite atmospheric and at times it was tense. I also liked the setting. However, I was never fully invested in this. Those of you looking for a book about a reality TV show will be disappointed here, as that barely plays any part in the story at all. I also never cared for any of the characters. There were so many secrets being hidden and then revealed, that by the final third it had all become so convoluted that it made me lose interest.
Hmm, I'm really not sure why, at this point, I persist with thinking I will enjoy location thrillers because inevitably, I find them lacking a bit. Dee and Tori have been friends for ages, but keep things about themselves hidden. They are setting out to Greenland to direct / film a reality tv show, but like them, others are not sll they seem. For the most part, this one kept me interested, especially as things started to unravel and despite the slower pacing I did get invested. As the conclusion came closer the pacing ramped up and was quite tense, but then it just got a bit ridiculous and the book lost me at the end. A mixed bag of thoughts there.
Freeze is a standalone thriller by author, Kate Simants. This author is new to me and I selected this one based on the exciting mystery posed in the blurb. A reality show set in the Artic where one of the contestants dies under mysterious circumstances – sign me up! I loved the idea, having just recently binged many seasons of Survivor, the reality show. The story is mainly told in multiple POV by our two main characters. I feel like this book could have been improved by having more POV characters so that we come to care and know about more of the other characters, but I understand why the author did this. The first third of the book is pretty slow, I expected there to be more focus on the reality show aspect but this doesn’t quite go how I had expected. The mystery is complex, full of twists and while the pace (and length) felt a little sluggish at times, it was all worth it for the ending to see how it all comes together. I enjoyed this one and will look out for more by this author. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an arc of this book.
Rounding up mainly because of the exotic location and the consequent "cold weather related" challenges that the participants had to go through, as after a strong start I thought the second half was underwhelming. We start off strongly with the introduction of Tori and the proposed challenge, set out on a ship off the Greenland coast, sufficiently far away from civilisation that help is not readily available in case things go wrong - always a recipe for disaster. The premise of the game show is interesting, with participants getting voted off i.e. losing the chance to win with each round, but they all remain as "deckhands" and continue to participate in challenges (I suppose this has to be the case, as given the remote location they couldn't quite go home after elimination). Given I found this interesting I was hoping to see a bit more of the game show play out as part of the story.
Soon of course, the plan starts to go awry as . From this point onwards (which is actually relatively early in the book), the central premise of the game show actually becomes severely relegated, and as a consequence apart from being really isolated the uniqueness of the place setting also got eroded. From here on it felt more of a run-of-the-mill crime/thriller, enjoyable enough but for me had lost its spark.
The ending/reveal was nice in that I thought it was well-worked, with , but it was far too long and complicated a reveal. I also thought .
Firstly huge thanks to Robert Greer for very kindly sending me a copy of Freeze.
When I saw the cover of Freeze, I just knew this would be a book for me....isn't it strange that! Well, I finally got around to reading Freeze at the weekend and here are my thoughts.
From the opening prologue, you can feel the tension in Kate Simants writing virtually crackle off the pages! We start with a scene in the past that involves a boy and a girl and an event that with every turn and decision the girl makes in the future, it ripples outwards and affects her and others' lives.
This will be a hard review to write as I am loath to give any of the plots away, but the setting is a reality-type show - think I'm a celebrity get me out of here but set on a ship in the Arctic Circle so that the elements are already part of the dangers that contestants face without tasks thrown in as well!.
The setting is superb, its bleak, empty and its bloody cold (I know I've been inside the Artic Circle in Winter!), and the ship that they are on is immensely claustrophobic and with the tensions that arise from the cast of characters this just sizzles and as a reader, I was utterly gripped and almost couldn't read fast enough!
The cast of characters is fantastic a great mixture, that as the novel goes on, opens up and reveals things central to the plot -some are lovely and I wanted to be their pals, some are horrid and I hated them! But I loved the way we get each chapter from the two main protagonists of Dee and Tori, the writing of Freeze is truly slick and I found it so easy to gorge myself on the chapters, and I read Freeze over 3 days.
The climax was thrilling and had my palms sweating and my internal voice shouting! Freeze is a really well-written thriller, I found it an easy and quick read, but the story is full and complex, I just gorged myself on it!
If you like locked-room-style thrillers, and books set in snowy ice-laden landscapes that will chill and thrill you with a splatter of creepiness thrown in then Freeze needs to be on your radar to purchase.
A superbly written chilling thriller, my rating 5 stars.
A reality TV show is being filmed aboard a ship in the Arctic. Tori is leading the project and has put all of her hopes and dreams into making the show a success. Tori's oldest friend Dee is the camerawoman, determined to get back into work after her last role as an undercover journalist went terribly wrong. Events take an unexpected turn when one of the contestants is found dead, and Dee suspects it wasn't an accident.
A completely gripping locked room mystery with a twist.
I have seen a lot of fantastic reviews of this book and I can tell you that every single one is spot on. As soon as I read the first few pages I knew it would be a brilliant book. Kate Simants has a remarkable writing style that pulls you straight into the story and keeps you hooked until the very end.
The story is told from the perspectives of both Tori and Dee, and even though you get an insight into their thoughts it still created an air of secrecy about what truths they were hiding.
I couldn't possibly write a review without mentioning the deadly icy setting. I absolutely loved the feeling of dread that anything could happen in those conditions, especially on a small ship where you don't know who to trust.
A truly unmissable book with a brilliantly original concept.
Thank you NetGalley and Viper for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
A reality TV show set in the Arctic, with a cast determined to show their leadership potential. Unfortunately, many of those involved have things they’re hiding and this ‘locked room’ mystery with a twist is a story that grips you from the opening. Our perspective shifts between camerawoman Dee and producer Tori. Though they’ve been friends for ages it’s clear that neither feels able to trust the other with their secret. As the show gets underway we have ‘accidents’ and deaths that could be explained away, but which we assume are linked to the secrets being kept. The cast of characters are rather undeveloped, but there’s enough there to help make sense of their actions. It really did seem that this could end up a bloodbath. Thankfully the truth comes out before things get to the worst possible result, but it’s definitely a tense read. Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this before publication.
Set on a ship off the coast of Greenland, 8 contestants challenge themselves to prove who is the ultimate leader to win a £100,000 prize. Well this was the idea behind the show, but as contestants drop out and a few unexpected changes are made and tempers begin to fray, then a contestant is found dead, can the show go on?
I found the book enjoyable and a page turner, but the improbability of the contestants and relationships and background made it far too unrealistic. The characters were limited in their development and not very likeable.
Interesting premise. Slow pace. Underustilised setting. Unlikeable characters. Multiple perspectives which sounded the same. Too many implausible coincidences like how they all ended up on the boat together. I don't trust Will (Tori's fiance) he had to have known more than he did. It's like he orchestrated it all.
Freeze is a great book for filling in time. The setting was fantastic, isolation, murder, the integration of the characters history and new connections. All well written.
The pacing is a little slow, with a few details that aren't really needed. But it was enjoyable nonetheless.
This story set in the arctic where a challenging reality show is being filmed inevitably ends in murder, multiple suspects and many sinister backstories. I found the story engaging in many places despite the characters being quite dull and the actual central reality show premise being little more than just there for the hell of it. It won’t be a memorable read but it wasn’t bad.
A taut gripping thriller set in the freezing arctic circle. A group of contestants on a challenge reality show, a big freeze and the ship that they are on is stuck by the ice and people are dying. Skillfully told with a few twists in the tale, it held my attention and I enjoyed it!
This was a Richard and Judy Book Club choice. Interesting story set on a ship in the arctic setting for eight contestants in a reality filming. All have a past.
This book was a slow burn with a lot of characters to keep up with. The game show aspect seemed a bit pointless. That said, it did get more interesting at the end of the book. There were two separate stories that became clear at the end. Tori, Helen, John & Gaia; Dee & Annabel. I wasn’t expecting the ending, it was a refreshing change from usual predictable endings. I think there could have been more focus on Will & his choices for the ship, etc. He seemed to be glossed over & rushed at the end. However, I did enjoy the book & would recommend it 🙂
