Becoming Lady Rodworth

Rate this book
The undisputed Incomparable of her first London Season, Violet Nottingham has the world at her feet. Her dance card is always full, her drawing room teeming. Every eligible gentleman on the marriage mart showers her with presents and praise - everyone, that is, except the handsome, unnerving Lord Rodworth. What does the viscount know about her to judge her so harshly anyway? His insult haunts her day and night, and Violet swears to prove the hateful man wrong.

Clive Anderson, the newly-minted Lord Rodworth, is resolved to be like his loyal, late father in every way except for one: He refuses to marry a beautiful woman who will inevitably break his heart. Trouble follows the fair, and he is determined to have none of it as he finds his footing in his new role. Now, if only the intriguing Miss Violet will leave his heart and mind alone.

Book 2 in the Avington-Nottingham series, Becoming Lady Rodworth explores the story of two stubborn people coming to accept that maybe love lies where they least expect it.

Sigh-worthy indeed…

It was such a pleasure to read such a beautiful story. Although, I did not like Violet at first, certain changes that took place within her, made her a wonderful and lovable character in the end. The romance was sweet and left me happy.

Wasn't super deep or anything but Violet and Rodworth were cute and there was a lot more character growth from them both than I expected

A Regency Romance with a twist. She’s so beautiful that he doesn’t want her! She is all that Lord Rodham says she is: namely, vain and predictably arrogant and overly sure of herself.

Violet wasn’t meant to overhear, but he’s not really sorry, because he told the truth. The twist comes after she is, of course, terribly offended. Sometimes the truth hurts, but if it can cause change for the better, it can be worth it.

The book is definitely worth it. This is a wholesome story that offers a lesson in worthwhile qualities; the ones to try to attain.

I don't think I went in with any expectation but this still managed to surprise me.

Violet was such an interesting character to read about. In her introduction (having not read the previous book in the series) Violet comes across as enormously vain, rather self-focused, but not cruel or unkind. She's wrapped up in making her debut as successful as imaginable and to her success means being the diamond of the first water and having everyone be in raptures by her beauty and very self. This sounds critical but Violet truly doesn't come across as unlikeable. She's not entirely likeable, but if her character didn't have any drastic shifts she still wouldn't have been a character that frustrated or annoyed me. I think that's because it was so clear that Violet was working with all she knew. She had only ever known herself as as the beautiful sister out of the 4 girls, and since nothing more or less has been expected of her, she's working with what she thinks she has. Very interesting.

Her world view is rocked slightly when she overhears Rodworth criticizing her as he claims she's a selfish creature with little sense. Violet is incensed by this character assassination by someone who doesn't know her, and is also stunned that Rodworth isn't taken in by her, and is also a little preoccupied with getting him to apologise for his words.

I just really liked this. The story flowed for me, but more than anything I enjoyed the characterizations. Absolutely everyone felt fleshed out and nuanced. I've already spoken about Violet, but even side characters like her mum feel like real people. Her mother is intensely invested in Violet making a good match, and she's also occupied with vanity, but we also do see that she is a mother who cares about the happiness of her child.

With Rodworth also we understand almost immediately why he judged Violet so harshly. And I absolutely adored how Rodworth realising he had unfairly judged Violet wasn't necessarily through getting to know her and her emerging layers, but in understanding that just as people immediately saw her as a beautiful bauble based on her outward appearance he was doing the exact same thing just in inverse. It was just great.

Of course I also loved seeing Violet and Rodworth get to know each other, and their affection for each other was enormously sweet.

Can't wait to read more in this series.

“With her older sister successfully, if slightly scandalously, married, Violet was free to make her London bow on her own.”

And such a debut it was! I was SO excited to read the story of the second Nottingham daughter’s romance that I immediately reread the first’s. Though the books focus on very different sisters (I could identify with Heather’s bookish reserve more easily than Violet’s incomparable beauty and magnetism), both stories are equally sweet and moving, written with a very natural flow. I loved how Violet and her mother made the most out of her London season. Balls and dinners and the whirlwind of calls and cards and flowers afterward- it was everything they’d hoped for. But what was even more satisfying to me was Violet’s inner beauty as she grew to examine herself and her many suitors against more lasting values. Gaiety and popularity faded when compared to loyalty and sacrifice. And this transformation is exactly what won her the respect of the one man who wasn’t impressed by her outward beauty. As in most inspirational romances, the happy ending isn’t hard to predict, but the journey there in Iris Lim’s books is just sooo delicious. It’s refreshing to have decent characters and pleasant families. I give this a solid 5 stars and eagerly await the younger Rose’s story. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Book Sirens and was not required to post a review.

Heart-tugging historical romance with themes of self-betterment and redemption

This reader has been a huge fan of this author’s Pride and Prejudice variations; while this is her first of the author’s stories other than. Truly, this author surely does not disappoint.

It’s very commendable how the author clearly paints the lovers as persons with depth and good moral character, rather than the shallow impossibly attractive Lords and Ladies Protagonists in most historical romance novels. An Incomparable Lady of the ton reflects/realizes her worth as more than a pretty face as a result of the careless, insensitive and hurtful words of a prejudiced and judgmental Viscount, who nevertheless becomes a hesitant and resistant admirer of the said Incomparable. Heartache comes to the the lady who, despite the throngs of admirers and suitors lining up to propose marriage to her, could not seem to attract the Viscount, the man she highly esteems and admires for his honorable and upstanding conduct, and the only man she wishes to propose to her because only he sees her for her true worth.

Character development is what makes this story remarkable and memorable. This reader shall be venturing into other non-P&P historical romances by this author.

The beauty that gets in the way

Miss Violet Nottingham is the second of a family of four daughters and considered the beauty of the group, but while that quality was incensed, her other qualities weren't encouraged or seen.
For the family, and for herself, it was certain that when she entered into society, it would be a success and expectations really came true. She is the Incomparable of the season, with several admirers.
Unfortunately, the beauty that sets her apart from the rest also restricts her. Different people and herself, see her only as a pretty girl, an adornment to be displayed to all, but what attracts many gentlemen is what repels Viscount Rodworth.
An unpleasant comment from the lord bothers her, as well as the fact that he doesn't admire her like the others. This initial rejection will help Violet to be more aware of her surroundings, the feelings and actions of others and herself, and to seek more than fulfilling society's expectations.
I am a great appreciator of the author's style and I am once again blessed with a sensitive text, where emotions are the protagonists.

A charming story of learning to look beyond the façade.

As the follow up to One Night in Beniton Hall, I very much enjoyed reading the story of the second of the four Nottingham sisters. Violet, almost a polar opposite to her kind and gracious elder sister Heather, appears as vain as she is is undoubtedly beautiful. However her beauty is quite simply a fact she has been brought up to acknowledge and use to her advantage in her first season. As all the gentlemen flock to her bar one, the handsome reclusive Lord Rodworth, she both revels in the adoration of the ton, whilst simmering with offense at Lord Rodworth’s cutting assumption regarding her shallowness. This is a story of seeing beyond the veneer we present to the world, learning to let others see beneath the façade and understanding the development of one’s own character. I liked that the family were more involved in this story and I was able to get to know them better. An absolutely charming, clean Regency read I thoroughly recommend.

This is such a sweet story. We meet Violet as she sets out on her debut to society where she is deemed the incomparable of the year. Violet tries desperately to emulate everything she thinks her mother hopes and dreams for her as the toast of the town with many suitors vying for her attention.

Fast forward a few weeks into this circus and we see a slightly more mature Violet who realises that looks and compliments paid to her by her varied suitors are not worth running after as they fail to take the time to get to know the person behind the beautiful facade.

Both parties take a little time to grow up and understand that not everything is as it seems. They grow to love and respect each other and finally have their HEA. Lovely read.

More than meets the eye!

This was a fun and enjoyable read. My first from this author but certainly not the last. Clean romance and storyline. Wonderful characters. I almost did not want to like Violet with how shallow and superficial she was BUT through some honest criticizing words allowed her eyes to be open and look beyond herself. And I admire her so much to open her eyes and thoughts to see if a change needed to be made. Much to Lord Rodworth for his honesty but I
love the transformation he had through the book as well. Both characters had great qualities when it came down to it and I love how their relationship was much deeper than the outside though the physical attraction and desire was very evident as well. I loved Violet's Papa and the relationship that transformed and changed within the story for the better as well.

Perspective-changing

I've been reading this genre for several years now, and I've often complained that the reason so many of them fall short is lack of plot. Well, I was wrong. This author has taught me that a skillful writer can make even a lightly plotted romance riveting.
I didn't expect to like this second novel in the series because it's the story of Violet, the beautiful sister. But this book surprised me, just as the first novel did with its focus away from surface concerns and directed instead into character revelation. And I loved watching Violet come into her own. I loved her awakening. And I loved that there was a man who matched her and came to realize it.
What a delightful story. I look forward to more by this author and in this series.

This is a delightful, encouraging story of a lady raised to sink all her hopes into her beauty only to come the realization that beauty is not everything. I was emotionally involved with her growth, disturbed by her selfish, prideful demeanor and ecstatic to see her humbly admit her faults. The Hero was equally interesting in his growth , realizing his Mom wasn’t every woman. I laughed at the peacocks, sighed with the romance and was enamored with no foul language. This author is new to me and I look forward to reading more of her stories!

Clive sees Violet surrounded by many suitors as an incomparable and due to the memories of his mother (who was a beautiful woman) and fathers marriage he assumes all women like his mother had been are to be avoided. Meanwhile Violet, had preconceived ideas on how her season would be, as she was well aware of her beauty, finds herself reevaluating both herself and her many suitors after she overhears something Clive told his friend at a ball. Between what Violet observes around her and what Clive learns after he meets Violet’s father changes both their preconceived perceptions and ultimately leading to their hea

I enjoyed this short regency romance. A nice quick read. The girl is very pretty but she learns that being beautiful is not all it's cracked up to be when all people see of you is your pretty face. I loved this quote given to the hero who had to learn to see past her pretty face. "It is sometimes harder, is it not, to see a person's face when it lies beneath a glittering crown?"

Content warning: it got a little more amorous at the end then what I like to read but it stayed clean. This also discusses the infidelity of much of the gentry at the time, keeping it clean, but also pointing out enough that you know why the hero and heroine both want a true and faithful spouse.

clean romance

Four and a half stars!
The author creates a wonderful world in which her characters come to life. The whole family of characters are easy to understand and see how they interact..
I enjoyed how both the hero and heroine had some growth to accomplish before finding each other as well as their better selves.
I love reading the series in sequence as I get to see how the characters grow from book to book. That said each is a standalone.
I recommend this book, series and author!

Becoming Lady Rodworth is Book 2 in A Regency Romance by Iris Lim. I really enjoyed watching Violet's growth from… I am so beautiful and perfect to a lovely Lady. gentle and sweet

Sweet but…I feel like the first in this series had a little better pacing. I wanted just a little more tension in the plot. I just felt like I was whiling away my time until the next hurdle was passed. But if you like sweet, gentle romances with little to no angst, this is recommended. No smut, each character overcomes a negative quality, the family is sweet, etc. Just a teensy bit boring.

I really do enjoy a historical romance that takes place in ballrooms in polite society and involves courting and all that comes with it. So often they are filled with everything but that these days. The family relationship was done very well in this book and I enjoyed the growth in both of the main characters. The dialogue was quite good as well! This one is better than the first book in this series!

Becoming Lady Rodworth - Iris Lim (Sirens) 12/10. 12/6-7
She is THE most beautiful woman in all of society
She knows it. But when she hears a man say that she just beautiful - and there is nothing else there she is devastated. And it makes her think . . . .and when an Earl demands she marry him - yeah NO. This is a superb book of what a man/woman should look for! Loved it!!!!

inside the incomparable

I liked the twist. Clive stayed away because she was beautiful. And then Violet was able to think about what being chased as the incomparable meant and found she wanted more than to be just.a prize. It was a fun twist of a boy playing hard to get though with his knowledge didn’t to k he was playing hard to get. Makes me want to read more of the series

When I read the blurb of the book I inmediately knew that I was going to love It and that has been the case.

The story is very entertaining and the character very well written. I love how Iris has developed the story and how good she has manager the enemies to lovers trope.

too quick

Sweet. Not much heat. I wanted more of the talking scenes between them early on. The story makes reference to them being in each other’s company but I wish I had seen it. I wanted to see them become friends. Hate to love was too quick.

I liked how violet changed and saw deeper into herself, they were a cute couple but the story lacked depth for me- I did like how it focused on how beauty isn’t just the outside that matters but to make sure and see the whole person.

A charming story, Violet funds her true love

I enjoyed this, the second in the series. Violet, the Incomparable of the Season realised that external beauty is not everything. Love wins out in the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second installation of the Beniton Hall Series. There was good character growth in both MCs, Violet and Clive. I appreciated the clean nature of the romance. There is something to be said for leaving things to the imagination.

Felt like the turning of a new leaf was too abrupt and not believable when the main was so arrogant before. It would hav been better over a series of small awakenings vs one main one to be believable.

This was a breath of fresh air! After a handful of cheesy romance stories with characters that seemed to have the single purpose of making eyes at each other, Violet and Clive were lovely. Both of them had real issues with their character, and both showed real growth on the page.
