Ever since Ryou returned from the hospital, life with Haru, a demon with the face of his late cousin, has been taking its toll on him. While Yuu and Chiyo enjoy their time together as brother and sister, Ryou continues searching for a way to bring his beloved Youko back to the land of the living. But his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by Haru, who has a plan of her own…
Continuing the trend of the last installment, volume 6 is more about Haru and Ryou than Chiyo and Yuu--and I'm okay with that for the most part. Haru is a more interesting character to me than Chiyo, since she's been on this plane of existence longer, and has a feel for how some things work (vs. Chiyo's "born sexy yesterday" archetype). The problems begin when the two pairs part ways at the end of this volume. And there are more than a few of them.
First, Haru deserves better. Ryou will never truly care about her, and her dogged attachment to him is heartbreaking. Second, it's made clear that these two will continue their story in a spinoff series at some point down the line, all but guaranteeing we won't be crossing paths with them again in the main storyline. Third, and perhaps the biggest...I really don't know where Chiyo's and Yuu's story goes from here.
For the rest of The Elder Sister-Like One, there's always been this sense of looming catastrophe in the background, and it was heavily implied that it was all going to come crashing down once Ryou recovered, and came home from the hospital. But...that's happened now, and everything seems to be okay. There's no obvious threat or reason why Chiyo and Yuu can't be happy together heading forward. Maybe something will crop up once the summer ends, and Yuu has to go back to school, but it's unclear what that will be. There was a passing mention of how Ryou opened pretty much every arcane door he came across in his quest to bring back his cousin, but I worry that's bringing things too close to "monster (girl) of the week" territory.
That is, if these volumes were released often enough for that to be the case. Volume 6 came out over a year ago, as of this writing, and there's no sign of volume 7 on the horizon. Yet Pochi claims that she (or someone at least) is also going to be writing a side story for Haru and Ryou? I worry it's going to be quite awhile before we get any answers to anything, and until then we'll have to make do with this strange low point in the story.
With Haru's continued doting on uncle Ryou we see more from Ryou's past while he prepares his nephew Yuu so he can continue to live on his own. After all while he and Haru have been helping Chiyo and Yuu we can see Ryou has not given up on his quest and can not settle into this family lifestyle. More slice of life moments and chances to improve her sisterly role we see Chiyo and Yuu returning to the main role of protagonist now that the hound is out of the bag.
Considering it has been over 2 years since the last volume I am concerned there might not be anymore story to come out even though it claims there will be a volume 7 to continue. That said the end of the volume shows there is a new novelization based on Haru and Ryou called "The Elder Sister-Like One: The Investigator and His Hound" which may be taking time away from this story. Honestly I am not sure how much more can be shown considering how strong Chiyo is and how Yuu starts considering how long till he has to pay the price to her. For all I know this whole manga is a prequal to the hentai doujin of the same name so only time will tell.
This is for the doujins of Ane Naru Mono because they don't have an actual listing for the 18+ version.
I flat out dislike this version heavily, sure, some of the fetishes aren't that bad, but Yuu is a child. I understand the differences between American and Japanese laws, but it seems a moral grey over there too. The entire time I felt gross when reading it and not in a good way whatsoever, like Hideout did. Hideout made my skin crawl because it looked disgusting, Ane Naru Mono made me feel like a creep.
This volume is a bit tamed in terms of the ecchi elements, compared to previous volumes, and focuses a bit more on the mystery of Chiyo as well as hinting at the mystery of Haru and Yuu’s uncle: Ryou. I’m extremely curious to see if anything gets revealed in the next volume or if more hints will simply be dropped. Overall, I like that this story is getting more of a plot line outside of the main ecchi storyline surrounding Chiyo and Yuu-kun. Also, I’m very curious to see if the hinted spin-off focusing on Ryou and Haru actually gets made since I’d be interested to seeing more of their journey and dynamic.
Of all the manga I have read this year, The Elder Sister-Like One has to be the most enjoyable of all (excluding the 18+ version). The dynamic between Chiyo and Yuu was cute and there was the right amount of horny where it wasn't the most too much. Plus, the inclusion of Lovecraftian monsters made it more fun with Shub (Chiyo) & Hastur (Haru) as central characters.
I believe the only two things that are holding it back are the 18+ doujins & the fact that it isn't finished. The doujins just make me uncomfortable because Yuu is 12 and he is getting dominated by a ageless deity. And, I just want the manga to be finished ngl.

4 1/2 stars instead of 5 because of how short these volumes are. Otherwise it continues to be such a laidback and whimsical series with just enough mystery and menace. And what can you say about the art but, sexy, dark with a touch of playfulness. Wonderful! The end hints about two of the characters getting their own series. Count me in for that!
