Stay with Me

Rate this book
Sacrificing and dying to oneself is costly.
But doing so brings new purpose and joy.

As a private investigator, Sybil Huxham has seen her fair share of strange occurrences. But nothing in her career has been more perplexing than the miracles she’s witnessed as a result of people drinking ancient holy water. When she discovers more of the rare holy water, she experiences strange overlaps with a nobleman in the Middle Ages who is languishing in a dungeon, accused of treason and condemned to die. To save his life, she finally crosses to the past completely.

Nicholas Worth has never met a woman quite like Sybil, and as the two run for their lives into the Weald, they find refuge among a community of outlaws. With both their reputations on the line, they have little choice but to marry. As they get to know each other, an undeniable attraction develops. But danger and disease chase after them, drawing ever closer. Will they be able to escape the threats? And will Sybil choose to stay with Nicholas in the past, or will she be ripped apart from him forever?

She wrote a third book!!!!!! All of us readers who have been reading the Waters of Time series were super excited to hear that a third book was coming. And let me tell you, it was totally worth the wait and excitement!!!

Sybil is the investigator from the first two books and now she gets her own book. Woohoo!!!

She is such a goodhearted character who has worked hard to strengthen herself. Her mom disappeared years ago and has been declared dead. Leaving Sybil and her brother to care for each other. He's struggling from blindness after serving in Afghanistan. She's trying all she can to help him but he's not ready for help. There's so much more to their story but I'm not going to expound. you can read to figure it all out.

This series is a time slip series and there's water that is the catalyst for the characters to end up in different times. Again, you'll have to read the books to understand. Sybil understands what is happening as she's worked with some of the characters from previous books. She eventually finds herself in 1382, the same time and location as the previous books. So as readers, we're transported back to where we've been following the characters living in that earlier time. And yes, Nicholas is back!!! Woot woot!

Oh my heavens! These two and the way they meet and connect and become friends. But the sparks flying between them are noticeable by not just the reader but the people around them. Watch out Sybil, you're going to have a big decision to stay or go back to your time.

There is political intrigue happening in 1382 and Nicholas is right in the center of it. So trying to figure out what he's working on for the king, and trying to keep this woman safe, he's found himself in a situation he never thought he'd be in. Falling in love and a forced marriage of convenience.

Sybil and Nicholas end up married as a way for him to protect her. And let me just tell you that the chemistry between these two is sizzling. They'll try to protect each other and their hearts but time is not on their side.

If you enjoy time slip novels you really should read this series! And there's going to be a fourth book! So much goodness in this one and lots of great reveals at the end.

Content: Clean. This is a Christian Fiction novel where the characters think about God and His hand in their lives. The marriage of convenience does have some kisses that get a little steamy but just kisses and snuggles.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

'God uses trials and hardships to mature us in ways nothing else can.'

Jody Hedlund's Waters of Time series has been so fascinating and wonderful to read. These stories, which are time-crossing, have captivated me from the very beginning. All feature the element of holy water, believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life.

Set-in present-day England and in the medieval era of the late fourteenth century, these books are amazing to read as we watch characters travel back and forth from one time period to another. I eagerly looked forward to each one. And there will be another! Jody Hedlund has been a favorite of mine for many years and her historical books are awesome!

My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. The review here is my own opinion

Stay With Me is an outstanding addition to the Waters of Time series! I loved these two main characters and the way they were “all in” for each other. I appreciated that Sybil had a good grasp on what was happening to her based on her experiences with the other characters in the earlier books. She was determined to get back to Nicholas to save him early on in the story, which was a beautiful peek into her heart. There were other times, as well, in this novel when the hearts of these two main characters really showed through in the way they put each other first and also tried to help and save others.

The passion that these two characters had for life was inspiring, as was the romantic passion that began developing between them. The reality in this story was that Nicholas and Sybil were made for each other regardless of where or when they began in life. It was sweet to see their connection grow throughout the novel.

I was thrilled with the way the author wrapped up this story while also setting up some hints for the next book to come. This is one of those series that I will read again and again!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

The Medieval time period is not a time period I thought I would enjoy reading. After all, how could I enjoy reading about a time period so different than mine that I know almost nothing about.
I have read just about every single historical fiction the author has put out and loved them so I figured oh what the heck, I am going to try her "Waters of Time" series and I am sold on it. Now I can tell you this, I won't read any other author's medieval time books but this series, it's amazing.
I am so excited to see Sybil and Nicholas have their own story. such a strong, passionate and positive couple. The story is so well researched that I was absolutely captivated as I read it, way too late into the night. Canterberry is the setting of this time travel blending fact and fiction in a book you won't be able to put down. It was so intriguing to learn about the black plague, the importance of archery, the troublesome spies for the English and the French and how easily they would jail you. The one sure fire thing linking this series together is the holy water. I didn't realize it's importance during this time period. I fully recommend this series and eagerly look forward to reading book four upon its release.

Wow! I am so glad Jody Hedlund continued the Waters of Time series! Sybil & Nicholas were such intriguing characters from the previous books and were just begging for their stories to be told. This book does not disappoint! I admit I stayed up past 1:30 am reading because it was so hard to put down.

We get more of Sybil’s backstory as we find out her mother who was working for the government disappeared several years ago and is presumed dead. Sybil’s brother, Dawson, injured in Afghanistan has become despondent not only because of his blindness, but his mother’s death. Seeking the holy water to cure her brother, Sybil tests the liquid and is transported back in time to 1382 England. There she finds Nicholas Worth languishing in his brother’s prison. She vows to come back and rescue him as soon as she locates more holy water. She keeps her promise and soon finds herself back in medieval times with the handsome man.

There’s an instant attraction there that’s pretty scorching! The author keeps it clean, but it’s sizzling. Their attraction is believable as they experience so much in so little time. There’s plenty of action as Sybil uses her kickboxing skills to free Nicholas and they escape from his brother. There’s a bit of a RobinHood feel as they escape to a secret village full of endearing people considered outlaws.

As she tries to navigate this time period, circumstances convince her to marry Nicholas. As the two get to know each other, it’s clear they’re perfect together. But, how long will Sybil be able to stay in this time period? Their troubles continue to multiply as Nicholas intercepted an important message he must deliver regarding a French invasion and his brother is still out to get him. It’s a nail biter as Nicholas and Sybil try to avoid danger and stay one step ahead of his brother.

Nicholas is amazing! Despite the customs of the times, he’s completely respectful of Sybil. He admires her strengths and is even able to teach her a few skills she doesn’t have like horseback riding and archery. I loved the banter between these two and the underlying romantic tension. The ending will leave you with even more questions and surprises. I can’t wait to read Dawson’s story and find out what happens next!

Definitely put this on your Christmas list especially if you love time slips, medieval romance, or Christian romance. Though this could be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the previous two books. While the author does a great job bringing new readers up to speed, it’s more enjoyable if you’ve read the first two. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

3.75🌟
Audiobook (narrated by Caroline Fantozzi)
There was more heat in this romance than in the first two books of this time travel series. I enjoyed both the familiarity of what was happening with the holy water and the differences from what had gone before. Also, the story ends with a nice set up for what is to come in the fourth book which, sadly, I will have to wait another three months to read.

The Waters of Time is a fantastic time slip series, and Stay With Me is my favorite of the three books.

I was hooked from the very first page and couldn’t put it down. It captivated me with its suspenseful and intriguing storyline, intelligent writing, great characters, nonstop action, and clean but intense romance. As soon as I finished, I was ready to re-read it again.

Jody Hedlund amazes me with her ability to write so many different genres, and to do each one so well. Her talent truly shines in this series, and I can’t wait for book #4.

Many thanks to the publisher and author for a complimentary copy. All opinions are completely my own.

This series has completely captured me. This, the third book in the ‘Waters of Time’ series, revolves around Sybil and Nicolas. Both of these characters from previous books. I would highly suggest reading books, 1 & 2 first, to get the whole background story.
Stay With Me, starts in modern day time. Sybil, who is working on an investigation, to locate Dr Lionel, who had kidnapped and nearly killed her friend. During her investigation, Sybil had learned about vials of holy water that could cure illnesses. This holy water also allowed for time travel. In her quest to help her brother, Dawson, her only hope was to find some holy water to give him.
Nicolas was from medieval times around the 1300s. He was nearly dead from the beatings his brother had ordered. His brother was ruthless and evil, he was trying to pin Nicholas as a spy.
This story is full of adventure, intrigue and romance. Author, Jody Headland has an incredible talent of writing books that captivate you from beginning to end. This story is no exception, her creative imagination and her incredible research of history makes the stories come to life. You feel connected with the characters and your heart yearns for their success.
So much adventure, intrigue and swoony romance holds your attention throughout the story. Battles, plagues, PTSD, and passion are all written with sensitivity and discreet intent. I would consider this a clean, Pg13.
Although this is a fictional novel, it is rich with history of medieval times. Spying between the French and English, the plague that killed so many, the author incorporates all of it into the story so well. I have read most of her books and have never been disappointed.

Ohh everything I have read by Jody Hedlund has been fantastic! I came across her this summer and since then she quickly made it on my list of favorite authors. I will read anything she writes and I was so excited when I found out she had a time crossing romance series.

Stay With Me is the 3rd book in The Waters of Time series but if you haven’t read the first two do not let that stop you from reading this. This is the first of the 3 I have read but I never felt lost as Jody is an expert at giving you the bits of the story you need from previous books in a series so you can pick it up from anywhere. With that being said I can’t wait to go back to the previous books to get more of the backstory!

Stay With Me is about a woman named Sybil who has traveled back to 1382 to gain ancient holy water she needs to help her brother in the present time. While she is there she meets Nicholas who has been captured and is in prison. She promises to go back to save him if he helps her find the holy water she desperately needs. I love how strong and independent Sybil was. I also loved what a surprise she was to Nicholas, seeing that she was so different from the women of his time. I enjoyed Sybil using her kickboxing skills to free Nicholas and to help her through situations in the past. Nicholas was so respectful of her and admired her skills while also teaching Sybil a few of his own, like archery. While in the past Nicholas and Sybil fall in love and now she must decide if she wants to stay with Nicholas or go back to the life she has in the present time.

This book was full of the action I have come to love from Jody Hedlund. She is a master storyteller and writes these medieval stories so well. The story captured me so quickly and I couldn’t put it down. There is an amazing instant attraction between Nicholas and Sybil that just sizzles off the pages. It's scorching but still stays clean. I love the discovery at the end of the book and now I absolutely can not wait for book 4!

Oooh, Jody Hedlund can write a story! I was so excited when she announced more books in her Waters of Time series, and Stay With Me is a great addition. I was greatly intrigued by both Sybil and Nicholas in previous books, so I love that they got their own story. There were times I felt like we were still missing parts of Sybil’s character, but that ending…no spoilers, but I’m sure those questions will be answered in the fourth book, releasing May 2023. Jody writes medieval romance so well—I’ll never get tired of these books! 4.5/5 stars

This was very boring. I really wanted to read and know more about Nicholas after his introduction in book two. However, this was very anticlimactic. Nothing was happening in 3/4 of the book, and the end was very meh, a repetition of book one. I did not care about their romance at all, and I still believe that Marian and Will are the superior couple in the series.
ALSO, I don't understand why a terrorist group named The Hamin Sahaba would care about a holy water they don't even believe in.

Book Three in Waters of Time series continues the saga of time travel by mysterious holy water to 1389 and knights and conflict with France.
Modern day Sybil finds herself entrenched in a war in Medieval times and uses her kickboxing skills to rescue hunky knight, Nicolas, whose brother Simon is out to frame him for spying for the French.
This was quite the tale of Sybil trying to fit in among the simple folk and putting up without modern conveniences, to say nothing of a dangerous plague.
Ms Hedlund puts you in the setting of ancient times and a rumor of a healing water that evil people are searching for. The romance of Sybil and Nicolas is fraught with danger and shows how noble Nicolas is in his intentions to do the right thing. “ I wish to let my difficulties drive me to my knees before my Maker and not to my knees in despair.”
Not all is resolved in this story, so I am looking forward to more mystery and relationships to be revealed in the next book.
Very well done, atmospheric time travel.

I have been totally captivated by Jody Hedlund's Waters of Time series. I have long been a fan of time-crossing stories, which are different from dual timeline stories. In a time-crossing story, the MC travels back into another time by various methods. In this series, the holy water that has been linked to miracles is the conduit for traveling back to medieval England.

Ms. Hedlund masterfully immerses her readers into another time, her research into medieval England's customs, natural disasters and political turmoil lend authenticity as they are woven throughout the story. With a spell-binding plot and a romance that sizzles off the page, readers will gladly get lost within Sybil and Nicholas' story. I absolutely loved the hero! Definitely one of my top book heroes. And reading how Sybil, a heroine full of spirit and grit, adjusted to her role as a woman in 1382 England was fun. While not ending as a cliffhanger- there is wonderful foreshadowing to the next novel in the epilogue.

This is a hard review for me to write because I am this author's biggest fan and I really, really wanted to love this book. The first book in the series is a favorite of mine but this book had too many things that kept me from giving it more stars.

So I am going to keep it simple. I will also try to keep it vague but there may be some spoilery type comments so if you want to avoid them, stop reading now.

Things I liked about the book:

Medieval setting
Robin Hood vibes
Spy/treachery plot
Great secondary characters
Suspenseful scenes

Things I did not like:

-Sybil's personality slowly disappearing over the course of the book

-Interesting plot points introduced but then dropped or ending in anticlimax

-Nicholas' complete acceptance of Sybil's one sentence explanation of where she is from - no curiosity or questions asked - seems so unrealistic

-Main plot similarities to the first book

-Almost every interaction (like 98%) between the main characters revolves around their sexual attraction to each other. Don't get me wrong, this book is not sexual or graphic, but it is definitely sensual.

And while I don't necessarily have a problem with that in theory, it is non-stop, all the time to the point where we don't even get to know the characters because their entire inner dialogue is so heavily focused on how much they are hot and heavy for the other one but that they can't be together yet for reasons XYZ. It was just too much and I wanted so much more from the characters besides their sexual tension.

-The epilogue. So far out there I don't even know what to say.

If you loved the first two books in the series, you may love this one too! It just didn't have the polished feel I have come to expect in this author's books. Still a big fan and will still read her books; this one just wasn't for me.

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

CW: Innuendo. Lots and lots of innuendo. Some graphic deaths. Mentions of rape and murder.
TW: Loss of spouse, PTSD, drug abuse

For someone who absolutely loved the first two books, I was not a fan of this third book in the series. The sexual tension absolutely dominates in this book, to a point where I felt the storyline and character development really suffered. Chapter after chapter would be fully dedicated to Sybil and Nicholas's sensual passions for one another with details that were just not necessary. Overall I would say that there has been more than typical sexual stuff in this series, moreso than I have seen in other books by this author, and more than I would come to expect from a Christian author. So much so that I would make sure that these books were put up and away from my kids as sometimes they would flip through the pages and say, "mom, this book is really inappropriate!" lol. The other books there was bits of sensuality, but the story didn't suffer whatsoever. Time travel is such a cool premise for a book series and the first two books were so rich and extremely well polished. But this one was sexual tension overboard IMO, almost as though the author didn't have a good storyline so just stuffed it full of sensuality and sexual tension to either a) fill the pages, or b) to appeal to readers who enjoy that sort of reading. I came to expect better from these characters because the first two books were so amazing, but this one was really just disappointing :(

We first meet Nicholas Worth in the first Waters of Time book, Come Back to Me. I was happy that he finally got his story fleshed out. He is a man of great integrity and honor. When he meets Sybil Huxham he meets his match, she is independent and is determined to find out if the holy water she has found will help her brother, Dawson who is blind and has given up on life. When she passes back to 1382, she finds herself sharing a cell with Nicholas, who he has named the Angel, but dresses very differently from the women of that time.

I really liked Sybil, she keeps to herself but wants to belong with someone because her family has all left, first her Dad, then her Mom a few years earlier, and now her brother who has effectively told her to get lost. Really enjoyed this one.

So great to be back in this world that Jody Hedlund has developed. Who knew that time travel would be a genre I would enjoy so much! After reading Book 2 I was eagerly awaiting for Sybil's story and I must admit that I was curious how she would make Sybil time travel and boy did she take me into quite a journey. Jody definitely takes you into this magnificent ancient world that you just want to be in the whole time. This storyline was very fast paced and definitely keeps you turning the pages.

The romance factor in this story is WOW! Nicholas is definitely swoon worthy and when paired with spunky Sybil it makes for an amazing romance story. I loved how she quickly adapted to Medieval times and life with Nicholas.

I will say that Sybil has quite a story and I think that we could know more about. I am really hoping that we get to know more about her brother in the next book and also find out what happens with this person trying to acquire the Holy Water.

Although this is part of a series I think it could be read as a stand alone. There are mentions of past characters but sadly for me we don't get to see them in this story. Although there are mentions of God I don't think there is a huge thread of faith in the story but it was clean. I will say that if you are extremely conservative in your reads as far as romance goes this may teeter on the lines for you.

Overall I thought this was good story. If you enjoy time travel and clean romances then I definitely suggest this book. I for one can't wait to see what happens next!

Ahhh I’m somewhere around a 3.5 rounded up.

Y’all, I’m obsessed with Come Back to Me, it was the first in the series and really created the perfect story. I lloved both Sybil and Nicholas, loved going back in time and visiting the medieval 1300s, but I did have some hold ups. The chemistry between Nicholas and Sybil is instantaneous and amazing. Thinking about the science of it all, their chemistry would be a 4 on the NFPA diamond— taking everyone back to their science classes ;) but seriously, pretty sure they were ready to combust. Very instant love, a bit distracting from the storyline since it felt very physically driven. Just warning everyone, it’s quite the love story. It was hard to see their relationship beyond the physical desires, I wish there was more character development or even a relationship development that wasn’t focused on the physical.

I’m surprised how easily Nicholas just accepted that she’s from the future. We didn’t get to see him questioning her, asking about the future, which I would’ve thought that would be natural 🤷‍♀️

I had a few minor questions, but overall, I enjoyed the story. I think if you have liked the other books, you will love reading this one too.

I can give the book 4 stars, but with the caveat that it is steamier than most of what you imagine would be for Christian fiction. Personally would only recommend for married individuals, as there is a lot - possibly too much - of steam….nothing actually “happens” but it seemed like every time I turned around, they were drooling over each other.

However, I very much enjoyed being in 1382 for most of the book. In book 1, I had been wishing for that very thing. So yay!

I thought Nicholas was amazing and honorable, and was drawn to him from the start. Sybil’s family history gave her a layer I appreciated (moreso than from her appearances in book 2).

If you love Jody’s regular themes, plus time travel, you’ll continue to love this series.

I enjoyed this book very much! It is my favorite one out of this series so far.

Sybil and Nicholas have a very sizzling relationship (sometimes it was a tad bit too much for my taste but I digress). I did really like them together. They both care deeply for those around them. I learned to also care for them and those around them.

I enjoyed that the book kind of ended on a cliffhanger, leaving me wondering about what is going to happen with her brother and her mom. I've already put the other book on hold at my library and I can't wait to read it!

The first 2/3 of this book focused so much on lust and I did not like that. While nothing truly offensive happened the feelings were too descriptive for my taste. That being said, the last third of the book was great and the tie in to the prior books was good. There is a forth book in the series and I will continue with that as I am interested in getting to resolution on many unresolved threads of the story.

This is the third book in the Water of Time series, I was once again captured by the thought and wonder of whether or not there really is such a thing as “Holy Water.” The reader is drawn into the whole story as it gets more passionate and tense. Could it really heal someone or give them the power to travel back in time?
Jody Hedlund wrote this story and takes us on a ride like you won’t believe. With characters who are so real and yet, events so beyond our imagination.
I loved the characters in this story. The hero was so larger than life, WOW! I would love to have him protect me. The main female character in this story is smart and spunky. I enjoyed all the ways she had to adapt to living in 1382, oh, how it changed her life.
Jody Hedlund has now become an author I will read over and over again. Her characters come to life in such a way that I believe they are real. Her books are colorful, exciting, easy to read, and full of wonderful images. The dialogue flows so smoothly. I was truly caught up in the story and didn’t want it to end. Then as a sweet surprise at the end in the “author notes” she hints at there being another book in this series. . .. YES, Please!
This book had drama, suspense, action, medieval culture, hardship, and lots of sweet romance that will knock your socks off.
I highly recommend picking this book up! It really will take you for a spin!

Wow, was this ever good! I’ve really enjoyed the Waters of Time books and was super excited when I discovered the series would continue. I never in my wildest dreams expected an adventure like this one! The tough, independent investigator Sybil (who we met in prior books) and the swoony medieval hero Nicholas about burn up the pages with their chemistry (but it definitely remains true to the genre) and it’s very believable despite my general dislike for insta-love. There are subtle and natural faith elements, including how to deal with anger when you feel as if God has turned away from you in your time of need, and how God uses experiences to mold us into the what He has planned. I loved the fast paced storyline and the charming secondary characters. I’m hoping that Dawson gets his own story too! I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and was not required to write a positive review.

And we're back! This book made me nostalgic for book one - Come Back to Me. The love story was slow-building in spite of the marriage of convenience and oh-so-romantic. Sybil was a tough, no-nonsense detective in the first two books and I loved her transition into a medieval society where women tend the home while men do whatever it is that they do. A nice mystery within the storyline and a wonderful ending.

Whoooooooeeee!
What a heart stopping adventure for Sybil and Nicholas!
In usual Jody fashion, readers will be swept up in the thrill, the sparks, and the love of this couple.
And bonus….we find out there will be a book 4. Yay!!!!!!
On a quick note, while a “clean” novel, I would recommend it for more of a mature audience. :)
