A Witch on the Rocks #3

Eat, Drink & Be Witchy

Rate this book
Life is going well for Hali Waverly. She owns her own tiki bar at one of St. Pete Beach’s premiere resorts and her life is settled for the first time in…well, a really long time. On top of that, a local private investigator she keeps crossing paths has decided it’s time to date, something that both thrills and terrifies her.
All of that changes when a body turns up on one of the resort’s balconies and the owner of the resort is passed out inside with no recollection of what happened. Police think Franklin Craven could’ve killed her. The only problem is the marks on her body could also be attributed to an animal…and maybe one of a supernatural variety.
Worried about his freedom, Franklin hires Gray to solve the case. That means Hali and Gray are going to be investigating together…again.
St. Pete is full of paranormals, but Gray and Hali are looking for one specific one, a murderer who has a clear goal, even if it’s one they can’t quite ascertain.
Sparks are about to fly, in more ways than one, and death is on the cocktail menu. Hali and Gray want a chance at a future. They have to get through the present to make it happen.

You know when you really want something to happen, and then it does, and it's not great? Well that's what it felt like when Hali and Gray finally got together in this book. It sort of feels like Gray has had a personality transplant, like the cringeworthy early scene when Hali is trying to tell him about a murder, and he just wants to find out about her breakfast. Urgh.

Apart from a prologue, the merrow don't make an appearance in this book, but there's plenty else going on, although the two protagonists are more interested in their new relationship (not that this stops them still constanstly sniping at each other) than the murder.

The world-building is frustratingly vague for me. Like Hali is a member of a coven, but it's not clear what that entails. She never seems to attend meetings or anything, and the coven appear in the background of scenes without really doing very much. And Hali's powers are very ill-defined. In the first book, they seemed to be about telepathy, but this time round she's lobbing fireballs from her hands. And what really is the status of the paranormal world? Although everyone says that they need to keep it secret from the normals, it feels like everyone and their flamingo know about it. And speaking about flamingos, I was fully expecting Hali's drunken familiar to turn out to be Chekov's Flamingo, but three books in and he's just a drunk. A bit pathetic, but it's frustrating that neither he nor Hali seem to make any effort with the other.

There's an interesting, and somewhat surprising, subplot regarding sex work, with younger members of Gray's pack having to fend for themselves after an altercation with the pack, but this is never really unpacked, and both Gray and Hali have a depressingly negative view of sex work which I don't really get.

I'll still read the next book but this one feels like a dramatic fall in quality to me.

Entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series

This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. If I can cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Holly is a witch who lives in a condo on the beach and owns a tiki bar on the resort property where she owns it. The property is owned by a rich Christian old narcissistic Corn dog. He got drunk one night and ran over Holly with his golf court. His assistant who tries to keep him under control make sure that Holly was taken care of and she now owns the tiki bar on his resort property. She was also supplied a condo on the resort property as well. She deals with a lot of resort customers and people walking down the beach. She has an odd family that she must deal with on occasion and her boyfriend is a private investigator. Together they tend to help each other out in investigating crimes in the area. A very entertaining and fun series check it out.

Shifting attention..

.. Gray and Hali are finally dating after Gray disappeared for a week and made no contact.. when the body of a teacher at a conference is dropped on a balcony with Franklin in the room its Gray and Hali on deck to ensure he's not arrested for the crime he definitely didn't commit.. Mike the security guard is frustrated because he has a thing for Hali and really can't understand why she's with Gray.. but the game gets harder when another teacher goes missing and the only thing they can discover is some shunned pack members acting strange.. are they telling the truth about their reasons for being shunned and when two of them threaten Hali while she's on her own can she deal with it?

The characters are coming to life a little more but the newness of the series means we're still getting to grips with the set up and full cast.

Hali and Gray’s developing relationship

Quite enjoying this series, really unsure after the first book but it’s grown on me and thought this third book was the best so far. Hali and Gray are good together and here we see them finally admit this, think going forward they will be a really strong couple. Still no idea who she has a drunk flamingo that is totally inept as her familiar.
I want to give Franklin a good slap, he’s just such as a**hole!
No clue to why we had the marrow prologue tho d this is the only time they get a mention, most odd.
All in all a decent book.

Eat, eat, eat

I'm really getting tired of hearing "you're the strongest person I know", find another endearing line PLEASE! It's in so many stories.
Enjoyed this book because Hadi, although able to eat her weight in seafood, isn't perfect. She's been physically hurt and life's challenges include a disablement, her hip. She's the only character I can remember being disabled in any of the books I have read, other than perhaps someone elderly. Being disabled myself due to a fall, I connect with the chronic pain. She's definitely a kick ass witch!

Just A Gigolo

Hali and Gray have their hands full as two women are murdered at the resort, and the police ask for their help in the investigation. The wounds on the first murder victim clearly indicated paranormal involvement, plus Franklin is the prime suspect. Another wonderful whodunnit from Ms Hart, with plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing. A highly recommended read.

The Good and the not so Good.

Hali and her Tiki bar is often suprizes her at the groups, that come to share a night out.
A group of teacher friends end up being quite a problem which leads Hali and Gray into investigating several of the group that start disappearing only to find out the women have been murdered.
Great story with some happenings both good and bad.
Highly recommend this series!!

Namism “Karen Bashing” is cruel and offensive, childish and picking on those you don’t even know.

I was enjoying the series until Lily Harper Hart decided to target people with the name Karen. No writer with moral sense and compassion would denigrate and flail people she doesn’t even know. It speaks of anti-feminist attacks. For what purpose? You owe it to women everywhere to retract your vicious attacks.

A bit confused

I enjoy Ms Harper Hart's & Ms Lee's books and am always eager for the next adventure. This book is no exception. However, while I enjoyed the story, I'm confused.
The prologue left me with the impression something quite different was going to be involved in the mystery than what evolved and I found myself re- reading the prologue thinking I'd misread.

Wayne I’m not sure about in this one but I’ll wait and see.

A refreshing change

The relationship was a nice surprise without being drowned in whining and breast/chest thumping. Enjoyed the mystery and seeing some regulars back in action. It ended too soon but I'm looking forward to the next one where I hope a couple shifters get what's coming to them.

Light Mystery & Paranormal s

I was exhausted and this book was hard to put down. I finished it and was relaxed and in a good mood. Ready to relax and get the rest I needed. Included a boyfriend all women would like to be with and a beautiful witch filled with a spicy rebellion. Of course they fowl the killer!

Another great book!

I really enjoy anything written by Lily Harper Hart, her books are such a fun easy read. That being said, they are also very well written and she always manages to come up with new and fresh plots. Her books never become predictable. LHH is one of my favorites and I am always excited when she releases a new book.

I liked this book and the characters are interesting. I’m not overly used to the characters yet, since I read the other books a while ago. I feel like I might give a higher rating if I read all books directly in a row. Nevertheless I enjoyed the story and I’m looking forward to the next book which will be released in March.

Super cute

I am really enjoying this series. I love the main characters Gray and Hali. The chemistry between them is fun. As someone with chronic pain, I am enjoying that aspect of the storyline. Looking forward to more mysteries, more wayne, and more chemistry from this group.

Fun series

Fun third book in this series. The story is fast paced with an unexpected twist. The characters are well defined, but have room to grow. Can't wait to see how the storyline progresses.

I didn't see that coming.

Hali and Gray are teaming up again to solve a mysterious murder at the resort and sparks are flying. They are so much fun and I would love to visit there. I can't wait to see how things go with them.

Dates and Danger

St Pete Beach is wonderful. Having a Tiki Bar close at hand makes it awesome. Hali and Gray finally stop dancing around each other. But a body and the resorts owner really get the ball rolling. Lots of flirty fun here while catching an unusual killer.

Fun paranormal cozy

I love Hali and Gray together. They’re the sweetest, funniest couple.
Solving these murders is a bit trickier, especially when there are so many suspects. But get ready for a nice twist to the end of the story.

Witch and Shifter Solve Murders

I love the way the relationship between Gray and Halo has developed. Reading about the Gulf in November helps deal with the grey days. This was a fun book to read.

Great if you’re after something that you’ll fly through.

A fun, quick read. I’m enjoying the characters, and although this particular story wasn’t my favourite, I still devoured it in one sitting. Can’t wait to read the next book.

A Favorite Series!

“A Witch on the Rocks” is fast becoming one of my favorite series. Hali and Gray have a comfortable relationship, and one of my favorite parts is their “embrace the weird” attitude”. Conformity is boring.

Loved it

I love all of Lily Harper Hart's series. They are all my favorites. This is the newest and it is awesome! I enjoyed the mysteries but also the interaction of the characters. I was laughter out load quite a bit and love the sarcasm that comes from Hali.

A paranormal romance part 3

The idyllic setting along the Gulf Coast provides the ambiance in conflict with paranormal characters inflicting harm on humans. It is up to the good paranormals to provide the balance.

Wasn't sure about this series after first book. However, it is growing on me and catching my interest.
Glad that Hali and Gray admit they are attracted and become a couple. Unclear why Merrow was mentioned at beginning and never again in this book. Was surprised by who the villain was.
