Thinking with a Pencil is an invaluable manual for those who wish to use drawing as a tool for thought and communication. It offers scores of new techniques for using illustration as a thinking tool and as a means of organizing and presenting ideas. This manual is meant both for those with artistic talent and those who consider themselves complete beginners in the field of drawing.
It's hard to really give a proper judgement. I didn't properly understand what this book was when I picked it up, and had the impression it would try to teach me a lot less, with a lot less detail and theory. It seems like it's a terrific book, but it's not the book I thought I was buying, so I deeply disliked trying to read it. Oh well.
Highly recommend this for those wanting to learn better ways to communicate concepts, particularly for visual learners. Nelms covers basic drawing concepts and graphical representation of data. As a visual learner myself, I use these methods for my own notes & journal as I try to capture information content and relationships
I loved this book. I learned of it years ago from Dr. Michael Covington (and it's been years since I read it, but I think of it often) It predates many modern computer-based tools which I found refreshing and fascinating.
