Corsair Brothers #2

Corsairs: Kaspar

Rate this book
I live for danger. For excitement. For adventure.

When I end up in an escape pod with Alice, though, my world changes. She’s human. Vulnerable. She does NOT love danger, or excitement. But her mind is clever, her retorts sharp, and her smile brings me to my knees. I want nothing more than to keep her safe…and keep her at my side.

What does one danger-loving corsair do when he’s stranded with a beautiful human female on a jungle planet? I’m about to find out…

The adrenaline junkie and the homebody!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌎
Character development: ☹️🙃☺️😀
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Alice - she was taken captive by Aliens, then awoke to find herself and a few other human women alone on the ship Bouyant Star, floating in another galaxy. They didn’t know how to pilot the ship since they couldn’t read the alien language, so they played possum and have been able to steal food and supplies from other ships that think theirs is abandoned.

The Hero: Kaspar - He and his brothers are easy going Massaka space pirates, in it for the money, the adventure and the fun. In the first book, he and his brothers teamed up with another ship and an Lord Straik to find the Bouyant Star. He left the guys hanging after finding out his family was in the slave trade.

The Story: Alice and Kaspar find themselves alone on an escape pod spending days doing nothing while traveling through space until they end up crashing onto a jungle planet. They are attracted to each other, but Alice has been used and abused by aliens in the past so is reluctant to start anything with Kaspar.

Like many of Ruby Dixon’s books, this one was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Hollie Jackson and Mason Lloyd. I didn’t like Hollie Jackson’s voice the first time I heard it, but she is a really good narrator and I do really like enjoy her narration style and Mason Lloyd is great at these alien romances as well.

The story was a good one, these two were basically alone through the first half of the book, but they were both were very likable characters and I enjoyed their journey. Their time on the Jungle planet was a nice interlude. They faced a few different dangers and met some kooky aliens along the way. It ended on a nice note with them creating a nice home.

3.5 stars -- As with most of the RD books that start their lives as serials, I felt this was decidedly too long. That said, I really liked both Kaspar and Alice, and I loved seeing the tie in between the Bad Guy spin off come into play. I also feel like in terms of the macro Dixonverse, we're getting a lot more clues as to how all these different series ultimately tied in together

Get comfy and read Alien Survival 101 -- Abandoned Planet ver.

... things to do on the planet :-

• Kaspar (check)
• Lots of smut (check)

After Kaspar and Alice get on an escape pod, enduring weeks of staying in a closet-sized space, with crazy amount of sexual tension zapping between the two, they're full of hopes of making their way back to the Little Star.

But no, it sucks that they encounter Adiron's backstabbing ex for one, and if that wasn't enough, the escape pod crashes down on some abandoned, rainforest planet.

Now with zero opportunities in sight of ever making their way out of the planet's atmosphere, they need to suck it up and bring out the best of their survival skills to evade giant human-eating bugs that live under the ground.

Alice loves dishing out one sexual joke after the other and let me just say that I. Am. Here. For. It.

"You," she hisses, "do not have tits!"

I tap my pectorals, teasing her. "What're these bad boys?"

"Two pancakes that don't flap in the breeze, idiot!"

*thunderous applause

Sorry Kaspar, Alice was the star of this book.

Plot is not predictable, and that added another star to the review. Recommended, but read Adiron's book before starting on this!

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

If you ever wondered if big blue aliens with tails was your special kind of kink anything by Ruby Dixon will answer that question for you.  The answer for me was a resounding YES.  The Corsairs: Kaspar is the second book of the Corsair Brothers series following a band of space pirate brothers and the women they accidentally rescued from a ship.  Alice and Kaspar met when he and his brothers were trying to salvage the ship they were on and then ended up jettisoned into space in a pod to hopefully be rescued later.

Alice and Kaspar are night and day different.  She is a planner and frets anytime there is change or a chance to do something new.  Kasper hasn't met a dangerous situation he didn't want to run head first into.  So of course, they are going to make a great team when they end up deserted on a moon together.  Good thing there is a protective tiger-like thing that has decided to protect Alice and feed her puny human that can't hunt.

They have a great time stranded, getting to know one another and exploring what it is like to find your perfect person in the most unexpected places.  Now if only they can figure out how to make it off the planet and find Kaspar's brothers and Alice's friends.  Good thing they found a route that just might get them there.  It is just a little dangerous, so they will probably be fine.

I have enjoyed all the books I've read by Ruby Dixon.  I like the blue aliens and their love of all things human.  It has been great seeing yet another couple find they are made to be together and figuring out all the sexiness that entails.  There is a good blend of story telling and sexy times happening throughout the story.  I have found the books set in space have been a little longer but I haven't minded because I was really into the characters and the stories being told.  Kaspar's sense of adventure and fun was so infectious and while I really wanted Alice to learn how to take a few risks if was entertaining to watch her growth.

If you like interspecies couplings this could be one of the many Ruby Dixon books to fall in love with.

Narration:
Holly Jackson and Mason Lloyd are really fantastic narrators and do the entire series justice.  They have been great at all of the Ruby Dixon books they've narrated together.  Holly Jackson does great with the human female PoVs, bringing their character to life.  I have enjoyed how Mason Lloyd has performed all of the big blue alien heart throbs in this series along with the others by Ruby Dixon.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

3 stars.

➕ What I liked :

The setting.
(Mostly set on a jungle planet.)

Interesting side characters.

Somewhat interesting main characters.

The alien “cat”.

➖ What I disliked :

Annoying and prickly heroine.

Repetitive character description/character choice ( in different ways it is harped on about the size difference between the main characters…. the heroine keeps being described as tiny/short and little/petite/ fragile etc. by the hero…. And the hero being described as tall/big and muscular etc. )

The character description/character choice is formulaic.
Tiny/short heroine and huge hulking alien.
(It would have been really interesting to maybe see a character like Kate or Devi, Iolanthe, Leilani…or a combination of the four as the heroine/FMC in this story…. Someone that was tall+sturdy or athletic+statuesque that could hold their own in a different way and not seem almost fragile/frail or be fragile/frail.)

Repetitive/verbose.

Dragged.

The story was a little too long.

The romantic build up and chemistry was somewhat lacking.

This is the second read through of this book and I think I liked it better this time. Poor Alice and Kaspar have forced proximity for weeks in a tiny escape pod. Alice was fierce and a master of using her appearance to manipulate others, which was 100% necessary in a universe that is cruel for humans. Kaspar frustrated me because he seemed to hold onto that manipulation for a lot longer than made sense. They had a sweet love story though and I enjoy this book.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: attempted SA, violence, gore, killing in self defense, kidnapping, survival scenarios, mention of sexual slavery, animal attack, drowning, panic attacks, mention of severe illness in childhood, discussion of slavery

I liked it better than Adiron, but even though there were exciting elements, I felt as if not a lot happened in this one (most of the intense stuff is all in the last quarter of the book).

I have high hopes for Ruth and Straik and Mathiras and Helen though!

I loved Kaspar and Sterre (the eight-legged lion/cat) but the heroine, Alice, not so much. The adventure kicked up several notches when they crashed on the jungle moon was exciting and it was nice to see Alice get over herself and come to love and appreciate Kas for the loving, devoted person he is.

The secondary characters were intriguing. I adored the scrappy lady pirate, Bethiah. I hope Bethiah gets her own story and hopefully with a sakh male pirate who is as bold as she; I would never want to see her personality stunted or stifled. The dopey clone, Gloom/Salvotor, was sweet but dumb; I'm glad no female will be stuck with such a clueless, air-headed male.

The rescue and reunion was so awesome. It was nice to see that Sophie has found her way with the most unlikeliest of males in Jerrok.

I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy this book because neither of the characters made a big impression on me in the first book. But I really liked how Ruby used (mini) time jumps in these so we weren't rehashing the same timeline we just read in the previous book.

Kaspar is the brother who jumps into trouble head first. Alice is a human who just wants a quiet, boring life (who can blame her). Together they find adventure while stranded, Blue Lagoon style, on a rainforest planet.

Similarly to the previous book Adiron, the longer page count meant we had time for more characters and plot. At a few moments it dragged slightly for me but not enough to be unpleasant. I loved the inclusion of Sterre and to a lesser extent Salvator (though I liked him more for his cameo in the next book - iykyk).

The plot device of

Kaspar may be my least favorite of the brothers (+Straik). I just didn't find him as well defined. The plot and pet made up for it, though.

Quick(ish) Review

I love Ruby Dixon's Corsairs series and the way it fits in her overall Risdaverse. She's crafted a fun on the run romance featuring a grumpy heroine/sunshine hero and I was happy from beginning to end. The characters are fun, the world keeps expanding yet weaving in seamlessly with her previous books. It's proabably overwhelming to try and catch up with this series, but I think this book can work as a standalone while intriguing readers to check out the earlier books. There's danger, romance, and smutty fun all rolled into one. Can't wait for the next one.

I'm listening to these, which is not my preferred "first time read" method, AND is not how I prefer to read Dixon's longer works because (respectfully) they can get quite repetitious and drag. I appreciated that she was working with an unlikable heroine with Alice, but she was TOO unlikable for me in the first half. Then like halfway through, they dropped a lot of the "Alice is so prickly and annoying" stuff and it really picked up and saved the book for me.

Dixon has a few things that her heroines sometimes do that really grate, and Alice did them all. She tells Kasper she doesn't want anything physical (reminder, she was awakened from stasis to be abused by her captors) and then gets mad that he respects that boundary and doesn't push. He's clear in his intentions and attraction, but they want different futures so she's mad he won't rewrite his future to suit her, even though she agrees it would be impossible for him. She also does the patented Dixon "If I thought he wanted me I'd be with him forever" unsupported lack of faith when girl, that's all he's been saying, you've been saying no.

Massive points TO Alice (and Dixon) for her reaction when Kasper calls her "good girl" in what he thinks is a sexy way, "blech, I'm not a dog." Lol.

This book was way too long. Was it bad? No. But it was unnecessarily long and that kinda killed the mood for me.

For this reason it can’t get a higher rating.

I loved the first part of the book a lot. Kaspar and Alice were so great at exchanging witty one liners and Kas was so laid back and positive that I don’t think I’ve read about a guy who can be like that all the time and still come off as attractive and alpha but he did it. I loved him: I loved Alice too but he was definitely the winner of personality of the year.

I will always, ALWAYS come for you, Sunshine.

Kas and Alice were pure fire together. They were hot from like page 8 until the end of the book. Wow, just wow. There was so much in this book. So. Much. Book. And I loved every minute of it. It was so good. There was a crash landing, crazy jungle, pirating, escaping, space fighting. So much sexy times between Kas and Alice…she’s very creative. There was so much action. All in all a great space pirate story.

When She Belongs (Risdaverse #4) by Ruby Dixon ,

Dixon continues to expand her narrative skills and build her sci-fi chops. I liked this one better than Adiron , the first book in the series. Kaspar and Alice are a fun pairing, though I would have liked to see plucky vs whiney Alice earlier on. The jungle planet was cool. Salvotor, the sidekick, a great addition, and hilarious. I hope he shows in other books in the series.

Bottomline: 3.5 stars. Definitely worth a read if you're into the alien, sex, romance thing that Dixon does so well. If you ignore the sex, you'll find a a pretty good mass market sci-fi story hiding inside. Waiting for the next one Ruby!

This is the romance between Alice and Kaspar! Based on what happened in the first book in this series, they had to be forced to live in a space pod together. But their pod ends up crashing on a kind of jungle planet and they have to survive together.

I flipping love Alice and Kaspar!! This was so sweet and I am such a sucker for survival alien romances :)

TW: attempted SA, kidnapping, killing,

TROPES: alien romances, books with pets, forced proximity, kindle unlimited, survival romances

I am enjoying this series. This entry is longer and keeps the pair isolated from the rest of the gang. Lots of forced-proximity interactions, and the relationship grows at a reasonable pace. Not too much will-they won't-they angst. They overcome many challenges before finally escaping into the arms of their brothers and sisters.

The sex scenes were warm and caring - no overbearing male theatrics. There were amusing moments as well.

The larger arc is advanced a little bit. I'll keep reading, mainly because I want to get to Bethiah's story.

Read as an audiobook. I wish Ruby wouldn’t make these books so long, but I was driving on a road trip with the audio speed set pretty high so this went by quicker than it could have. Still dragged a little, but the jungle planet was interesting. Alice wasn’t my favorite h, but this book was still interesting and I enjoyed meeting the new side character haha.

One of my least favorites from Ruby

This is probably my least favorite book from Ruby. I normally love everything she puts out.

Alice, the FMC, was incredibly difficult to like. Despite my efforts, she remained grating until the very end.

I usually enjoy lengthy novels, but this one felt overly prolonged. I found myself skimming through parts of it.

Not in a review writing mood, but I enjoyed this one overall. I like RD’s Corsairs and Risdaverse series a lot, and they are usually a hit for me.

Safety is good; no virgins, hero’s past barely mentioned, triggers: heroine was raped when she was first taken by aliens

"When I say you belong to me," I tell her between thrusts, "it doesn't mean that I own you. It means that I live for every breath you take, every twitch of your eyelash, every smile. It means I'll do whatever it takes to make you laugh. It may sound like I own you, but the opposite is true. You own me, my heart, my head, my spirit. I belong entirely to you."

I'm going start saying that the Corsair series is slow and if you want them to fall in love and get quickly to fucking like bunnies, you might be disappointed. Kaspar and Alice really had to put the hard work to get to know each other and figure out if they really would be a good couple, is not a ✨bEcAuSe i'm aN AlPhA ShE Is gOiNg tO Be mInE NoW✨.

Their escape pod is going to end up in a different planet when I say different it's like 100% to what we are used with previous books and series. Alice and Kaspar will be spending a couple of months on a jungle planet, I kept thinking as if they were stuck in the Amazons trying to escape. Kaspar is as loyal as his alien race can be but also, he knows his limits, will learn Alice limits and will do everything to keep her happy, protected but also help her grow into her confidence.

Of course, the sex is hot, their moments are cute but their commitment to each other, check kisses 10/10. This is like the third book so far that is 400+ pages, not saying this is bad but I'm getting the hope that the rest of the blue alien books go back to 100 or less pages.

Why the heck did I start with book 2?
I probably should’ve started with 1 but it’s too late now!
I LOVED THIS and sure it was a little slow going at times but it reminded me a little bit of the Spider’s Mate trilogy by Tiffany Roberts ( LOVED THAT TOO)

I loved pretty much everything. Both the MCs were great and really suited each other. If I had to complain about anything it would probably be that I would’ve preferred the ending to be longer, I would’ve liked to see them settle in since there was so much anxiety about it. It felt sort of unresolved. Maybe cut down some of the jungle time to give more time at the ending and settling in. I’m always greedy with my endings so that’s nothing new.

It took me awhile to like Alice, she was a little too prickly, and not in a good way, for just a bit too long. Maybe this was dragged out since it was originally a serial?

I really didn’t feel Kaspar was much different than Adiron in the smarts department. This was played up a lot, especially in the previous book, but Adiron isn’t really stupid and Kaspar is too impulsive which is more in line with the “stupid” they refer to about Adiron.

All in all it was enjoyable, loved the jungle planet. Would like more stories there.

5 stars ⭐️.

I read this as a serial on Ruby’s Facebook page and loved it. It was exactly what I expect from a Ruby Dixon book: hilarious, full of adventure, and smutty.

Alice and Kaspar were another fun couple in the Rubyverse, and I think their story is my favorite. Trapped in a pod together, then stranded on a planet together? It made for a lot of cute, fun scenes. Alice was really clever and made a perfect corsair, and Kaspar’s admiration of her was adorable.

I’m looking forward to Ruth and Straik and Helen and Mathiras’s books!

A SciFi Alien Serial Romance by Ruby Dixon is wow. Not sure what to say but Sci Fi, alien erotica. I like it. I like her writing.

Humans being abducted by aliens makes for an interesting read where there are mates and language barriers. It is fun and witty and at times heartbreaking, but it is certainly something different and I now find myself strangely addicted.
