I received an ARC from NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing of “Good Night, Body. Finding Calm From Head to Toe” in exchange for an honest review.

Adults have heard about mindfulness for quite some time now. Considering the past few years, we’ve definitely needed it. Between the politics, wars, racial divisions and the pandemic, mental health has come into the spotlight. But kids haven’t benefited from the focus on mindfulness. This book changes that.

Written by Britney Winn Lee and illustrated by Borghild Fallberg, this beautifully illustrated picture book helps parents to introduce their children to mindfulness. In the story, a child uses simple body scanning before they go to bed—moving fingers, arms, hips, legs, and toes one by one to get more in tune with their bodies—a technique often used in guided meditation for adults. Doing so enables people to sleep more soundly and comfortably; to anchor themselves in the present.

This book is much needed, and especially in todays world. Like the rest of us, kids are having to cope in an emotionally charged atmosphere and mindfulness exercises will really help them learn how to cope. I hope this book is made available in libraries and homes not just in the USA, but worldwide.

I absolutely adore this book!
Thank you, Thomas Nelson and the author, for the advance reading copy.

I am so grateful for this book! The illustration is amazing. The entire book is so much fun to read and follow which I feel would be easy enough for the parents, teachers and guardians to read and teach the kids.

The writing is fun and focus on the different parts of the body which the kids will easily understand to follow the instructions given.

I would say that the book is not to be read by the kids themselves but as a read along kind of picture book with someone older and carry out the activities together one activity at a time.

Love the concept. Love the presentation. Worth it.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Children's for accepting my request to read and review Good Night, Body.

Author: Britney Winn Lee

Genre: Children's Nonfiction --Parenting & Families

Calming from head to toe at bedtime is the point of the book. The illustrations are pretty. The color combinations I found calming. Subsequently, it makes for a good bedtime story. However, there is more. Written are little movements a young child can be taught to relax.

This is a short book for young children. I found the first part wordy. The middle surprisingly affected me emotionally. I loved "Hello lungs feel up with all the air the earth has gifted you.". The joy of books, sharing ideas and thoughts. This certainly does.

I would gift this not just to a young child, but a new parent as well. I think the simple practices shown can aide us all whether or not we are going to bed.

This book helps you to introduce your child to mindfulness by taking them through a full body scan. What this is and how best to present the information to your child is addressed in a clear and easy way at the beginning of the book, so if you're a beginner or trying mindfulness for the first time you'll know what to do.

I personally have had an active mindfulness practice for almost 3 years, and have been wondering how best to introduce my 5 year old son to mindfulness too. He's unfortunately never been the best sleeper, so when I saw this book I picked it up immediately, hoping I'd be able to help him sleep better while I introduced him to mindfulness. He really enjoyed doing the body scan and looking at the pictures-- before going to bed he even asked me if we would be able to read it again tomorrow night. I was happy to be able to tell him we can read it every night from now on.

The illustrations are light and airy, perfect for inspiring calm and a night of sweet dreams. My son was especially taken with one where a child is floating through the sky hanging onto heart-shaped balloons.

I'd recommend this to parents of children age 4 and over who are hoping to introduce their children to mindfulness, or just to make the transition to bed a little bit easier.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson: CHILDREN'S and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Good Night, Body is a wonderful little children's book that leads kids through a mindfulness practice called a body scan before bed. The book is very cute and the illustrations are helpful in showing kids what to do at each part of the scan. The scan itself is engaging and fun. The illustrations were so inclusive and included children of different races and disabilities (including mobility aids). I enjoyed the thoughtful author's note at the beginning of the book and thought it was very helpful. I would love for it to include the best age to begin the book and ideas for how to help younger children through the body scan. Overall, it's a fantastic book for introducing children to mindfulness practices.

This book is so sweet. The illustrations are cozy and comforting and visually pleasing; and the writing is calm and inviting. I guess I’m really not the market audience for it, but maybe adults should also be listening to their bodies more deeply and allowing a bit of a routine in shutting down the body, bit by bit, at bedtime. I was comforted by the novel and found myself trying to focus more on my own body as I laid in bed for sleep, so that’s worth something! I think I would definitely consider gifting a book like this to young family too.

Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Children’s for the ARC of this!

My attempt to make my kids like mindfulness continues with this one! I loved the illustrations, especially the variety of kids shown moving their bodies and preparing for bedtime. I thought the language used was soothing and sweet! Definitely recommend giving it a try at bedtime.

Amazing illustrations with quite a good sense of instilling technique of letting children learn about their body parts. Children must learn from early stage about the working of their parts so that they get to know how to use their every part according to the requirements. How to see well, how to quench itch, how to walk, bend and run?
This is a likeable work and must be included in school curriculums.

My Review:

With little wondering eyes and minds our children and those around us are so incredibly inquisitive. They are like little sponges soaking up the world around them. Good Night Body, is a sweet book that its intended purpose is to calm and sooth, particularly right before bedtime.

The book starts out with each body part first getting all the wigglies out then moving on to our head and mind. Before long the tips of our toes. In a calming and soothing way to get your child focused on putting their body to sleep for the night.

A great book with muted illustrations and a calming effect to help even the squirmiest child off to dreamland!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, Thomas Nelson.

As a school counselor, I like any books that I can use with my elementary school students. I happened to be working with a little girl whose problem with sleeping fit this book perfectly. We followed the exercises in the book and hopefully, she will use them at home.

The purpose of the book is to introduce young kiddos to the practice of relaxation and meditation through the use of body scanning, or noticing and relaxing individual parts of our bodies. Some of the “directions” on how to relax are more clear than others. For example, “Hello, shoulders. May you be soft like dough. Rise way up high, then settle down into stillness,” is relatively straightforward and likely clear to a child. “Hello, head. May you be light like a cloud. Follow the breeze, and float freely above the world,” however, may be confusing to young kiddos. With the help of an adult to model some of the examples in the book, I believe children could greatly benefit from these exercises.

The illustrations are great and I was especially happy to see the inclusion of children of different ethnicities and some with physical uniquenesses - a boy missing an arm, another with vitiligo, a girl with a leg prosthesis, a boy in a wheelchair. Excellent representation of children and one that could spark conversations between a child and an adult.

Finally, though published by Tommy Nelson, a Christian book group, this book was completely secular. It was because of this that I was comfortable sharing it with my students at school. I appreciate the publisher including non-Christian books as well as Christian ones in their works.

My sweet girl is a highly energetic, motor-driven child who moves all day long and thinks every bit as fast as she moves. Finding a great calming routine for her at bedtime has been years in the making and still changes often. Lately, it means a good dose of heavy, vestibular work followed by reading books and Bible stories under a weighted blanket and even listening to audio stories in the dark before sleep. I chose this little book as a way for her to be mindful of her body and all it has done throughout the day, to center her focus, and train her mind to help her body rest versus simply crashing from exhaustion. I love how sweet and gentle this book is, with adorable illustrations of diverse children and subtle, but colorful images. It addresses saying good night to various body parts (fingers, toes, arms and legs) as it likens them things a child can relate to making this book easy to enjoy for little ones. It’s short and sweet and easily something we can do together each evening before bed. We love it!

Christian Parent Note: This book does not contain any faith-based elements. It references “the air the earth has gifted you” and “offer breath back to trees and seeds as a thank-you for their kindness”. While I understand the science behind photosynthesis, I wish this book pointed little hearts back to God as the creator of our bodies and world, and reminded them that He loves them. It saddens me that this book is 100% secular. I expected differently based on the publisher and author.

This nonfiction picture book suggests physical movements that children can use to help themselves relax before bed. In a note at the beginning, the author mentions that since children will have different physical abilities, adults should adapt this to whatever is appropriate for their child. I appreciated the disability acknowledgment, and the soft, pastel illustrations and soothing text are sweet and inviting.

The book seems a little long for the purpose, and many kids wouldn't have the attention span to go through all of the mindfulness exercises, so this is probably best as a reference guide for parents to pull ideas from, rather than a book to go straight through at bedtime. Nonetheless, it's an appealing, unique guide to embodied meditation practices.

Although this book is from a Christian publisher, there is no faith content. In the dedication, the author refers to her body as a "conduit of eternal things," but there are absolutely no spiritual references in the text. Secular readers shouldn't let the Christian publishing house name turn them off, but Christian readers will likely be disappointed that the book doesn't mention anything about God or teach kids about concepts related to our embodied spirituality.

**Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson: Children's for this ARC in exchange for an honest review**

First off, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. I just followed Borghild Fallberg on Instagram! There was also such diverse representation - race, gender, disability, etc.

I read some of the reviews before I started reading the book, and a couple of them complained that there was no mention of God or faith for the publisher being a Christian publisher. To be honest, I didn't know Thomas Nelson: Children's was a Christian publisher, and that was not a factor in me selecting this book to review. I like to read works from all kinds of authors and publishers. What bothered me most was the white woman who said that the diverse representation "doesn't matter" to her and she "didn't notice that" on her own. In fact, it took her reading other reviews to even make her aware of it. She should care. There needs to be more diverse representation in books, movies, TV shows, etc. Everyone should be able to see themselves in something.

On to the content of the book itself now...

It's about checking in with your body at the end of the day by doing a "body scan." Children are encouraged to start calming down with some deep breaths and stretches. Listening to your body is a great way to see how you're doing.

Do you ever find a book at just the right time? Because Good Night, Body showed up on my doorstep at EXACTLY the right time. One of the things my 1st grader has been struggling with lately is bedtime. Her anxieties run high, and she has a hard time shutting off those racing thoughts. This book has been such a great way to help her reconnect with her body and prepare for sleep (along with ear plugs, a sleep mask, a good white noise machine, and lots of snuggles.)

Good Night, Body teaches body scanning, which is a meditation practice that brings awareness to all your different body parents. This book is written on a developmentally appropriate level for kids to connect to their body and help release the tension their little bodies carry. And let’s be honest, I need these reminders as well. I really loved how this is a book that I can not only share with my seven-year-old, but it serves as a good reminder for me as well.

Prepare for lots of good interactive reading with your little one (which my daughter still loves), a perfect bedtime snuggle read, and illustrations that go beautifully with the words. This has been a perfect addition to our nighttime reading stack.

Good Night, Body Finding Calm from Head to Toe by Britney Winn Lee and illustrated by Borghild Fallberg is a delightful picture book that walks children through how to relax before they fall asleep. The story is easy to follow and takes the reader on a journey of preparing each part of their body for sleep.

My son enjoyed the story and said he used several of the techniques to fall asleep. I tried several as well. I think this would be a great part of any child’s bedtime routine. It may be especially helpful for children with sensory issues, neurological challenges, and those who have trouble letting go of the day. I was thrilled with the variety of children featured in the illustrations and the inclusion of children with disabilities.

I enjoyed this wonderful book that shared fabulous ways for children or really anyone to learn to fall asleep. This is a beautiful picture book that I highly recommend.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive.

Good Night, Body: Finding Calm From Head to Toe by Britney Winn Lee starts off with a note to parents about how to use this book to guide children to learn to feel more at home in their precious bodies. This book measures a little larger than nine inches square and is 40 pages long. It is aimed at early elementary children from ages four to eight.

Good Night, Body is sort of an interactive bedtime book. It is a book that could help children get the last wiggles of the day out and start to settle down and relax. Several of the exercises are for relaxing. It could be fun to do this book together as a family. I like the illustrations so well. They are inclusive of people of all skin colors and include differently-abled children as well. It is a beautiful book both in the writing and in the pictures. This book is just a clean reading activity book and does not include Scripture.

This is a great book to read right before bed with your kids to get them to calm down and teach them body awareness. It tells you what to do and shows you with pictures how to do it. I feel like we often forget how much our body is doing for us and this was a good reminder.

The illustrations where great and with colors I personally found relaxing. It showed great diversity wich is always great in books. I feel like this isn’t a book a kid should read by themselve, as it would probably be better if it was with a parent so that they can carry out the activities together. Maybe even a great night ritual.

This is a lovely body scan and progressive relaxation exercise presented in terms that will be relatable for young kids. The tone is so sweet and full of gratitude for all the wonderful things our bodies, hearts, and minds do for us. Kids are gently coached to be aware of their bodies and how they feel and to let go of tension or excess energy in preparation for rest. The illustrations are soft and charming, full of lovely detail and diverse characters. This would be a wonderful bedtime read for young children and could definitely become an oft-repeated favorite!

Thanks so much NetGalley for the ARC!

This is AMAZING! I read it as an adult right before work and it helped me feel more relaxed, even though I was headed into my DAY not my BED - but I can definitely see how it would help get me (and my toddler) ready for sleep. It forced me to consider each part of my body and feel for any tension I didn't realize I was holding - did I noticed some aches and pains I hadn't paid attention to? Sure. But, it reminded me to stretch and breathe and release that pain too.

This is a great way to introduce a crucial tool to kiddos and can serve as an amazing lesson or reminder for us adults to - for sure one I'm adding to my son's list!

This book is so precious! I absolutely love it's content, illustrations, and the constant overt message, "you are loved." Good Night Body helps introduce children to mindfulness techniques as they get ready for bed. Specifically by talking them through a full body scan story. I love that the author takes the time to present what a body scan is at the beginning of the book, so if you're a beginner or trying mindfulness for the first time you'll know what to do. This is wonderful bedtime book for children of all ages. Thank you, Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the ARC. I purchased the book to have on my child's shelf!

Kids are like little sponges soaking up the world around them! Especially from ages 3-12. These are the peak times for children and the time they discover who they are, who they will become, and what they will become.
Good Night Body is a very soft and relaxing book that helps kids calm down and relax before bedtime, going through your entire body. A great book with soothing illustrations and a calming effect to help not only relax kids, but adults alike. I found myself actually relaxing my whole body and closing my eyes as my fiance read the book to our daughter. I think more adults can take some of these hints for themselves (myself included) before bed to relax as well.

This is a darling book that encourages kids to pay attention to their body and relax before bed. It also incorporates gratitude for the body, promoting acceptance of the space kids experience the world through. The illustrations are well done and reinforce the message of the book. This is a great addition for those wanting to incorporate mindfulness through body awareness to kids - it seems like a good one for adults, too.

I am a Grandmother and while reading this book I found myself doing the different exercises. I wish this book was around with my children and when my Granddaughter was younger. We don’t realize the stresses of little ones during the day and these body exercises help get the wiggles, giggles and excitement of the day out. The illustrations are pleasing and colorful but not enough to stimulate children as the are reading. This is also a great way to teach little ones some of the body parts and functions. I highly recommend for any child,s library.

A wonderful introduction to mindfulness for children. Bedtime calming is the goal of the book which uses simple body scanning; moving and relaxing different body parts. The beautiful illustrations are perfect for inspiring calm and has a diverse representation. Designed to help children and their grownup on what to do and shows with pictures how to do it. Body scanning is a practice that can be used by all ages and I liked that the book introduces this to the young people of your family.

I read this book to my two-year-old daughter at bedtime last night and we both really enjoyed it! She was following along with the stretching and breathing exercises, which are something we try to practice as much as possible anyway. But, having examples of exercises right in front of us were very helpful! The illustrations were also so beautiful and I loved that the children in the pictures were all inclusive. I would buy this book for my infant/toddler classroom to read before rest time.

This is a great book for young kids to read before bed! I read this with my four year old last night and she loved it! A step by step book to help you unwind after a busy day. Beautifully illustrated, and written in steps, you can read the book to the children so they can slowly meditate without the need to read, or read it by themselves to add more fun. This book will help you and your children to release the pressure you unknowingly held throughout the day, and relaxed your mind and body, be mindful to yourself and love yourself more.
