This is a well written book with strong characters in Logan and Trina. The author does a fantastic job building the story with all the drama and romance. She paints her scenes perfectly and delivers an awesome twist to the classic fairytale. I loved and recommend this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

Unfortunately this was one of the worst books I have ever read. The writing style isn't the problem it's that main female character who was supposed to be one of the most powerful witches ever but was a complete and utter idiot. She couldn't even cast a spell unless she prepared it first. She was complaining all the time about Logan not letting her help but how could she help when she couldn't even cast a spell in an emergency! And the sex scenes were nothing to write home about. Safe to say I will not be reading any more of this series and just wish I could get back the time I wasted on this book. The one star I gave this book is only because if I didnt rate it, then I wouldn't be able to give this review.

Had to call it quits on this at like 60%. It was terrible. Insta lust at it's absolute WORST 🤢

The way the author kept describing Trina's boobs was exhausting - it's almost like a parody of women written by men 🙄 Logans POV was even worse. Was the reader supposed to admire him for not raping Trina? Does he want a fucking gold star for trying to get her consent first??
It reads like a sequel, why is nothing explained?? There's no worldbuilding or explaination of anything and those rushed sex scenes?? "softening heat" "ripe breasts" it's like it was written by a teenage boy🤢

Can't do it #sorrynotsorry

What happens when you combine fairy tales with faerie and witches? A Sword of Blood and Roses.

A Sword of Blood and Roses by Jessica Ash is the first in the Tales of the Black Court Series and was an unexpectedly welcomed fairytale retelling. Logan, a Lord and Elven Huntsman who was captured by the Queen Faerie and put into a sleep state for 15 yr, was finally set free under one condition. He had to kill an entire family of witches. Of course, he took that offer and set off to kill the witches, but when he got there and saw Trina, he changed his mind. He decided to take her as leverage to ensure his freedom from the queen. But, while on the run with a hostage, Logan and Trina tried to survive while also developing feelings that probably shouldn’t be happening. How long could they last before the lies are uncovered?

Overall, this was a very cool story and oh boy was it steamy. I really liked the way each of the characters were introduced and one by one and in a specific way related to them. Also, I liked that there was a nice split between Trina and Logan’s perspectives throughout the story. What set things apart was the fact that the readers were thrusted into this world through the eyes of Logan who had awakened to a new world of his own and had to start figuring out what was going on. It flowed really well and kept me engaged.

It was very creative to combine several fairy tales rather than focus on it being one retelling. The elements from multiple made the story that much more interesting. As I read, I kept having ah ha moments when I recognized where the situations came from. It kind of became a game for me to see what other fairy tales I could find while reading.

Finally, I loved the access to earth magic that was abundant throughout the story. Mentions of chakras, energy, and earth transferences was great!

The only thing that threw me off was the beginning. I had no idea when and where this story took place. At first I thought it was an old time but then it changed to a current Oklahoma. Only when I realized there were portals, was it clear that there were multiple timelines and locations happening simultaneously. This could have been explained a little more in the beginning to set us up and get ready for the shifts.

This is totally for you if you love reading fairy tale retellings! This one has an added bonus by combining various fairy tales and faeries. You’ll love this dark romantic fantasy.

I’m waiting patiently for the rest of the story, but until then, I’ll imagine what’s happening with Logan and Trina.

Other books coming soon by Jessica Ash: Prince by Blood and Bone (July 2022), A Spell of Blood and Secrets (July 2022)

⤷ this is book 33 of 77 books i have downloaded for free on amazon kindle, so it may be time to finally go through them all. oh god, wish me luck.

the writing is nice. what is written isn't so much.

genuinely, the main character was annoying. it was the same fucking thing over and over again about how she has to save her tribe, and she can't have sex and 'don't leave me alone, take me with you' - SHUT THE FUCK UP.

logan was lowkey so fucking sexist, i hated it. all he could think about, at any point in time, was sex, and sex, and more sex. holy fuck, stop.

4.5 stars.

This is a steamy and fun fairy tale retelling of Snow White… but with the fae (generally referred to as elvatians) and witches. It has a pretty decent balance between plot and spice. I’d probably call it a medium burn enemies to lovers kind of story.

On the run from the Black Queen of the Tuatha de Danaan, the MacElvy clan of witches has been hunted nearly to extinction. When their latest hiding place is discovered, Trina stays behind while her aunt and cousins escape, in an effort to lure their would-be murderer into a trap. Unfortunately for Trina, the queen has set Logan, the Dark Huntsman, on their trail, and he easily walks past her trap.

Logan has an interesting story of his own. He rebelled against the queen 15 years ago, and was imprisoned in a kind of magical stasis. The queen releases him from prison at the beginning of the story, on the condition that he uses his hunting skills to find and destroy the last of the MacElvys. Upon seeing Trina he changes his mind about killing her, and takes her prisoner instead.

One of the things I liked the most about the story was the world building. It’s not so complex that you need to take notes or reference a map, but it’s not an afterthought like paranormal romances often can be. There are factions of the fae, and references to past wars between them. I like that the author incorporated the Tuatha de Danaan and the goddess Danu. The character of Solanum was pretty cool. It’ll be fun to see if he plays a larger role in future stories. The Traveler tribes were also pretty cool.

The Black Queen is a terrific villain, but there are also times when you wonder if someone is pulling her strings. You don’t see much of her in the book, but I’m sure she’ll become more prominent in the future. Here’s a pretty cool description of her:

“Her majesty, The Black Queen of the Tuatha de Danaan, was a vision in a barely-there gown—a shimmering rainbow of purples matching her eyes and exotic deep red hair. Once the poor, ignorant humans had worshipped her as a goddess, and no one had better forget. Logan was relieved to see Aeval, her pleasure aspect, and not the Morrigan, the dark battle goddess. Or worse, the Crone. Aeval implied her mood was light. At least, as light as the queen’s mood could be. The queen’s appearance was one of the many gifts that had put her in the throne. Her changes were real, touchable, and dangerous.”

I’m not really sure why the book is called A Sword of Blood and Roses. Swords are not used nearly as much as magic is, and roses aren’t important at all. It’s a very pretty title, but it doesn’t really connect back to the story at all. Overall, I did enjoy it and will keep reading the series as it comes out.

When Disney movies grow up- a steamy, spicy, enemies-to-lovers story that will keep you reading right up until the end!

This is a great fantasy retelling of Snow White with the Huntsman, an elf of mixed parentage (Tuatha De Danaan and Fir Bolg), as the hero. Logan Ni Brennan has been imprisoned by the Queen for fifteen years and has been released to serve as her executioner. The Black Queen of Tuatha De Danaan needs Logan to exterminate a family of human witches and then she'll grant him full freedom. But things are not quite as the seem. As soon as Logan lays eyes on Trina MacElvy, he knows he can never let her go. Logan just needs to figure out how to keep Trina safe, protect the rest of her family, get free from the Black Queen, and find Prince Kian. Trina just needs to guard her heart (and lady parts) from the all-too-hot Huntsman.

I absolutely LOVED the retelling of Snow White- Author Jessica Ash did a good job of staying true to the original Snow White but also moving far enough away from it that the story and plot weren't awkward. And I am SO GLAD The Huntsman was our hero. Prince Charming from the Disney movie was a one-dimensional dud. Logan is WAY more than that. And he's an elf to boot! But, because he's a descendent from two different Elven races, he doesn't look like the typical elf. He might just look better. Bet you didn't know there was more than one Elven race. File that under "Today I learned".

The rising action and climax (not that kind! Get your head out of the gutter- I'm talking about the plot elements! sheesh). were my favorite parts of "A Sword of Blood and Roses". I raced through reading just to find out what happens in the end. Do Trina and Logan get their Happily Ever After???? I AM NOT TELLING.

Now for what I didn't like....... Just one thing.
For whatever reason, I didn't love the build-up to the physical relationship between Trina and Logan. It wasn't badly written, or bad. I've been doing A LOT of reading lately and it just didn't feel original or different. It got better once they gave in to their desires, so no complaining there.

I really need to read the next book in the series "A Prince of Blood and Bone". It's based on Beauty and the Beast, my favorite Disney movie.

This is a Fae fantasy romance in all the best ways. There is so much to this story. It is mostly a Snow White retelling but there are hints at other fairy tales throughout the story. I loved these characters and how the author built up the relationship between the two main characters. The chemistry between the two main characters is steamy and intense. The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with magic, Fae, danger, death, politics, intrigue, and subterfuge. From of the start of the book you are drawn in and can’t put it down. This book has a strong, well-developed and an interesting story line with twists and unexpected turns keep you reading and turning the pages. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. Amazing world building that is detailed and imaginable. I felt like I was right there watching, feeling, and experiencing the book...not just reading it. The atmosphere created and characters were so realistic. Strong, interesting, and fascinating characters that are well developed and diverse. The world building is detailed, imaginative and so well done that you're drawn into a fantastic world unlike any other. The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with magic, Fae, danger, death, politics, intrigue, and subterfuge. The plot thickens, the suspense builds, and the passion erupts! I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story.

Welcome to the dark court, where things are not what they seem to be and the courts are at war with each other and the Crimson queen wants to take over. When Logan is released after 15 years of imprisonment it is conditional. The queen wants him to end the line of witches that could end her. When Logan finds the gypsies there is one that takes his breath away . Trina a witch that is powerful but she doesn't realize how powerful she is . She is an Earth witch and when she throws the trap to stop Logan she is thrown because she wasn't expecting an elf. Will they be able to work together to defeat the queen or will Logan have to kill the one person that gets him and has his heart before they even realize it .
The characters are so well written and complex . You will love to hate Logan he is such a scoundrel though out the book but you will love him when push comes to shove and he does the right thing . Trina is well she actually starts out pretty annoying but she grows into a heroine really fast . There are also so many supporting characters through out the book that you will love.
This is a twisted retelling of Snow White and it is so good . The author has taken the characters and threw them into this fantasy world of gypsies , fairies and assorted other mystical creatures. This is the first book in the series and I can't wait to see the other characters she brings into this series

For lovers of:
-Enemies to Lovers
-Fairytale Retelling
-Forbidden Love
-Dark Romance

A Sword of Blood and Roses is an enemies to lovers dark fantasy romance, where Trina, a human witch, is kidnapped by Logan, the high fae elven lord who was assigned to kill her. Together they must figure out why the queen wants her, and her family dead, while also figuring out their own complicated feelings towards each other.

This book jumps right into the story. You're immediately pulled into the lives and minds of both MCs, and though the story is very plot-driven, you don't miss out on getting to know and love the characters.

And the romance, while spicy, is also swoony, and sweet. Trina battling herself and her attraction to Logan because he's supposed to be her enemy, is almost as good as Logan says to hell with it, and loving her even though he knows he'll outlive her by thousands of years. I LOVE THEM!

The fairytale aspect of the story shows up, but doesn't drown out the originality of the plot, and the characters, though inspired by past renditions, are very much their own with their own personalities. I love all of them. They are fun and fierce, and layered. The world building is really interesting also, with fae and fairy, and all manner of creatures. I'm excited to keep reading this series!.

Steamy Stockholm Syndrome meets Snow White

One of the characters commented that being out does not necessarily mean being free. We often exchange one prison for another and/or allow our “captors” to continue their hold on us. This intrigued me, so I asked myself how that tied into Snow White could relate to us IRL:
Why do we pick the forbidden fruit, knowing that it’s poison?
Are we correct in blaming those who hurt us as being tricksters and villains?
Did we make up the story of the Wicked Queen posing as a wandering vendor selling her wares in order to shirk responsibility for our choices?

Some survival tips:
Learn hand-to-hand self-defense.
Prepare your potions and spells in advance.
Be creative with your talents to figure out new ways to provide protection (whether it be from animals, the elements, other beings).

Fave line:
‘All hunts have their challenges.’

I’m now going to follow the author’s sage advice on this rainy day – take a long, warm bath then follow it with a robust breakfast! Perhaps I’ll start ‘A Prince By Blood And Bone’ and ‘A Heart of Blood and Magic’ (#2.5).
After those, the next in series are ‘A Spell Of Blood And Secrets’, ‘A Dragon of Blood and Ice’ (#3.5), ‘A Court Of Blood And Snow’, and ‘A Queen Of Blood And Thorns’.

I was really disappointed. I thought that the book started very promising. The retelling of Snow White in a very interesting setting with promising main characters. But none of the potential got fulfilled. The MFC was just weak and whiny. She was supposed to be a powerful witch, but could hardly cast any spells. She went on and on about wanting to safe her family, but didn't really do anything for it. And the MMC? Possessive and horny ... and not in dark fantasy way, but more creepy. Also his perspective was pure repetition of the same behaviour over and over again. No character development at all. The romance part was mainly physical attraction og nothing beyond (even though they tried to describe it as some mating bond). And the smut ... don't get me started. I found it more a turn off than anything else.

I wish, the promise would have been fulfilled. I wish the crazy queen would have had a more dominant role and the story about the prophecy would have been better developed. My suggestion would have been to keep the main focus on the story and make the romance part of the story than the other way around, where this book was trying to sell a love story and tried to invent the story around it.

- Fairytale retelling
- Enemies to lovers

I really enjoyed this fantasy retelling of Snow White. The pace and plot kept my interest throughout.

Logan has just been released after 15 years - but his freedom is not guaranteed. The fae queen has bargained that if he ends some witches, she'll let him go. Logan doesn't trust the queen, but also doesn't have any other options.

Trina is an earth witch who, along with her remaining family, is in hiding from the fae queen, who is determined to wipe them out. Trina's cousin had a vision that something was coming to take them. Trina stayed behind to create a trap while the rest of the family flees. Trina was not expecting an elf, so her trap was ineffective.

Logan is trying to figure out how to bargain with the queen, because he thinks she will keep giving him more tasks instead of releasing him. When he gazes upon Trina, he knows he can't harm her. But how can he convince the queen he finished his task?

I am looking forward to reading more from this series.

Disclaimer: I made it 41% into this book and put it down with no plans to return.

The way the main female lead is objectified has me feeling like it was written by a clueless man.

The most powerful witch? When? Where? How? This was boring.

41% in and nothing has happened. The story hasn’t progressed, the characters haven’t developed. We get small glimpses of what I feel could be a really amazing fantasy world and plot, but it’s overwhelmingly overshadowed by the two main characters who are, for a lack of a better word, in heat.

We get it, he likes how she looks in her clothes and is on edge because he’s been in prison for 15 years. She is drawn to him even though she hates him. The angst and forbidden attraction is poorly written. There are literally 8 pages (on my kindle) of their internal dialogue about how he’s hard over her and her thinking he’s so hot and forbidden. It’s too much and rather juvenile.

An interesting fairytell retelling of Snow White minus the seven little dudes and an evil queen whose not necessarily a step mother, this book had it all- enemies to loves, a possessive and protective alpha, a little miscommunication trope and a lot of steam. Throw in some mythical beasts and a snarky puca and it was a fun fantasy read even for those who aren't necessarily fantasy fans! The book also had a lot of great world building without overdoing it and moved really quickly through each chapter to keep the reader engaged. It was a standalone but interconnected to the rest of the series- which I'm excited to check out the rest!.

This is one of the first books I’ve read in this genre, and it didn’t disappoint! I love anything to do with witches, and particularly liked the inclusion of that threaded throughout the storyline. I thought the overall story was interesting and written well, and I felt like the author did a good job describing the characters and scenes. This book definitely hits the mark for enemies-to-lovers while also balanced with girl-power, so if you are a fan of that, I would suggest giving this book a read. I’m excited to read more books like this one!.

This is a combination of fairy tales. I loved the narration of story.it was fast paced.insta lust and insta love doesn't sit well with me.. other than that it was very good.. Trina is protecting her tribe from the black queen. Logan was imprisoned for the past fifteen years and released from his servitude to become the Huntsman of queen. His first assignment is to kill all the mc elvys tribe. When he arrived, he has only one mc elvys in the premise, after being celebate for a long time he's attracted to her.

Instead of killing, Logan's protecting her. His uncles are helping them. Black queen is plotting against them using a wicked, greedy tribe leader.logan is saving her.

I always have my eye out for fairytale retellings. They are intriguing to me because I want to see what the author does differently and how they incorporate elements into their story. A Sword of Blood and Roses was a great start to the Hunted by the Faery Queen series. This dark and twisted fairytale retelling takes readers on a wild ride with expansive world building and unique characters. Trina is a witch hiding from the dangers brought on by the fae queen, and Logan is recently released by the fae queen tasked with hunting the remaining witches. Luckily, when Logan comes upon Trina, he knows he can't harm her. I am excited to see where this series leads and to see more romance!

Logan was supposed to kill Trina but instead she became his prisoner. Through their time spent together it was obvious the chemistry shared between the two. Trina was supposed to hate Logan for kidnapping her, instead she fell in love with him. She does t have what it takes to keep her safe when the Queen of the Fae is after her. This story was a fantastic dark retelling of Snow White. I struggled to put this book down. Thank you Jessica Ash for this amazing story. I can wait to read more!.

I just loved this twisted retelling of Snow White! The story takes us on an adventure through many different realms. Along with Logan's trouble-making puca, Solanum, Trina and Logan are trying to figure out why the Black Fae Queen wants to obliterate her family.
This book has just the right amount of spice and enemy-to-lover's angst to keep the story flowing. I can't wait for the next books in the series!.

Fae and witches - a great combo! The book follows Logan an elven lord who is sent to kill a family of witches. He finds one of them, kidnaps her and makes a bargain for her life - servitude for 1 year and 1 day for him up fake her death.

It's an interesting, well paced plot, that's well written and never felt rushed. The characters are very likeable and their chemistry is great 🌶

Looking forward to reading more by Jessica Ash!

A Sword of Blood and Roses is book one in the series Hunted by the Faery Queen by author Jessica Ash. Incredibly intriguing tale of magical beings and the world inspired by them. The Fae are not always what they seem. They are tricksters, holder is lies and outright dangerous. This one tale is filled with so many twists and turns- it’s hard to know who to trust.
Enjoy!!.

Surprisingly delighted. Picked this one up on a whim not knowing anything about it. Really enjoyed the story, my only slight is the FMC got a little bit annoying towards the end - tantrums about being left behind (fair), but then when she was brought along she was more of a distraction than an asset and also complained about that, then gets tricked into almost dying twice (made me bang my head against the wall).

Just not for me. I felt more confused after ever page. I couldn’t stand Trina because she was just so weak. Like what’s the point of being a witch if you can’t cast a spell or protect your self. She doesn’t even put up a fight. And why is she naked when she’s protecting her self? I just couldn’t do it. DNF at 20%.

What happens when snow is a witch and the huntsman is fae?
This had just enough elements of snow white to be a retelling but so much more was unique.
The story was paced just right. The backstory was delivered in a way that it wasn't overwhelming and the side characters brought more depth.

I loved the chemistry between the two main characters, I also loved the little mysteries in the story and unresolved issues that came along, they have character to the book and made it feel real, not just a story I was reading. Overall I enjoyed this book a lot. This was an original retelling of Snow White and the huntsman
