They say love conquers all…but what about an army of ruthless dragons?
Kaida and Prince Tarrin barely escaped the dungeon of Belharnt with their lives.
Now, the Remnant is hunting them while the Royal Palace is under the claw of the Council. They’re forced to flee in search of a place of safety, but mercenary dragons continue to track them at every turn, revealing evidence that confirms their greatest fear…
Eklos is alive and wants revenge.
Eklos’s army is sweeping across the country, slaughtering every human in sight, and Kaida and Tarrin are left with no other choice but to ally with a band of untrustworthy dragons in order to evade them.
And while they try to muster an army to rival Eklos, hope grows thin as village after village refuses to fight. Their last, desperate, chance at resisting the growing threat lies in the rumored safety of Shegora. But Eklos is determined not to let them reach it.
Betrayal and heartbreak are hidden around every corner, and with the enemy on their heels, will Kaida and Tarrin be able to raise an army to defeat them?
Or will the fears of the past consume them all?
Scales of Ice & Shadow is book two in the Ash & Smoke series.
This installment didn’t quite live up to the first but it is still a great story overall. I didn’t mind the YA feel in the first book, as it was consistent with the genre while still keeping a smart and engaging tone. In this one, however, even the adults acted like young teenagers and that really threw me out of the story.
In this genre, in order for all ages to enjoy it, the distinction between YA behavior and adult behavior has to remain consistent and true to reality. So having the 1000 year old Eldrin “the great” freeze from fear and quiver from indecision just didn’t make sense. Nor does the adults in the room throwing childish tantrums and sulks.
There is also a very distinct feminine slant in all the character’s actions, feelings and motivations. It obviously works very well with the female characters but it is extremely disconcerting in all the male characters. A big, strong testosterone-filled warrior is not going to think and react like a 17-year-old girl… but they do sometimes in this story.
Still, I can’t overlook the awesome storytelling that is so deftly interwoven into the fabric of the book. It truly is filled with twists and turns, sprinkled with bits of romance and liberally shaken with new and creative elements that keep a reader turning the pages. SO… although there are things that are understandably annoying, they still take a back seat to the progression of a truly addictive plot.
I personally believe this book is even better than the first! ❄️
Sometimes sequels can fall a little flat as authors tend to put more focus on the first and final installments in trilogies, but Schneider has outdone herself with this one.
Eklos survived their battle at Belharnt and won’t suffer defeat again. Kaida & Tarrin are on the run, trying to find a safe place to regroup, but it’s hard to know who to trust. Time is running out as Eklos’s army nears...
The reader is kept guessing, and there were several twists and turns that had me go “WHAT?!” Don’t worry, no spoilers here. I was flying through this one, fueled by the action-packed story. BUT THAT ENDING! (Again, no spoilers.) How DARE she end on that cliffhanger!!! 😭😂
Needless to say, I can’t WAIT to get my hands on the third and final book!!! ☀️
I have so many thoughts and I don't even know how to begin organising them into some semblance of a review, but I'll try. This book was stunning. It now lives rent free in my mind and it can do so as long as it pleases. It's become a comfort book for sure, which might be odd because it's literally about a war between dragons and humans, but it's also so much more than that.
There are so many moments of pure wisdom and kindness woven into a story where it seemed like any hope at all should have been impossible. It was beautiful. The way she explored raw emotions in such a healthy way was really refreshing to read as well. It wasn't idealistic - there was despair, sadness, pain, and loss. But the way she explored those themes, took suffocating darkness, and wove it into a way to grow her characters as they reached for the light. Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
And the plot? There was so much tension! In such a good way! On all fronts! Like romantic tension? So lush. Tension from suspense? I DIED!! You know when you're reading and you're like "wait is this really happening? Oh my gosh I think this is happening" but you have no idea HOW it's going to happen or what the outcome will be because there's like 5 different options but you can't see beyond the next step and when it all comes to pass you're shook. Because yeah. It was that good.
I adored the moments of humour that she infused throughout the book as well. It was subtle, but it added moments of much needed levity and humanness into the story. Plus it added another layer to the characters and their relationships that I loved. I can't give specifics because ~spoilers~ but y'all! Kaida is so relatable and she cracks me up. Like she doesn't even try. It's just... dry humour. Kaida being Kaida. Love her for that.
Tarrin and Kaida are AHHH I LOVE THEM! Book 1 - enemies to tentative "I like you but I don't know what we are". Loved that development. Loved how she began the trajectory of an enemies to lovers trope without turning it into a toxic relationship (I could rant about this it's seriously one of my biggest pet peeves oops). Book 2 - we're now in the transition from "they like each other they're just idiots" to *drumroll* you'll see ;) But believe me when I say I LOVE them together. For me, it's the fact that they're whole apart but together they're unstoppable. Their love isn't obsessive but it's deep, it's fierce, it's pure. The moments between them were like a soothing balm to the soul. And Tarrin. Listen, let's just say Emily got me on board with a trope I used to hate but with him it just hits different, and I'm not mad about it.
Lastly I just want to do a little throwback to book 1. I loved it, but there were a few small sections of phrasing that threw me off a little bit, and I was interested to see how her writing would develop in this book. Y'all! Everything flowed seamlessly. I can tell that she's really found her voice and her writing has become more refined in such a natural way? I don't know how to describe it. Words flowed off the page and created a beautifully immersive experience that I wanted to spend time in. I'm so SO excited for book 3, and I'm so excited for whatever else she writes in the future. She's definitely become an automatic buy author for me.
Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a beautiful age turner … lots of suspense and I had to keep finding out what was going to happen next. It wasn’t as good as the 1st book but still was a great book… I love the growing relationship between Kaida and Tarrin. The surprises in this book are incredible also. I cannot wait to tackle the third book and see how is all wraps up
I read this wonderful book a couple months ago so this review is a loooong time coming, friends.
I LOVED this second installment in the Ash & Smoke series! Kaida and Tarrin have quickly become some of my favorite fantasy characters, and watching their sweet romance evolve was one of my favorite aspects of this story!
In SOIAS, war with Eklos and the Remnant is looming, and the young shifters are scrambling to assemble an army willing to fight against them, striving for a better Elysia for dragons and humans alike. Despite the desperation woven into this tale, I loved that hope was also very present, and the characters constantly reminded each other that something good is always worth fighting for. So poignant and lovely. *Hugs book*
There were some great twists I enjoyed as well. A few gut-wrenching scenes that had my eyes bulging. Some new sassy characters that were super intriguing.
But. BUT. THAT. ENDING?!?!!!?!?!? My heart can't take it.
Needless to say, I cannot wait for Scales of Sun & Storm to release!!!
I received an ARC copy of Scales of Ice and Shadow and here is my honest and spoiler free review! I received and ebook, and loved it so much I bought a paper copy as soon as I was able.
When I picked up book one, Scales of Ash and Smoke, I tore through it and was sorry that I had finished it so fast. I immediately checked for when book two would be release and added it to my calendar.
Book two held me in the same snare. It was all to easy too lose hours in this book.
Scales of Ice and Shadow contains the perfect balance of action, suspense, romance, and a great subtle humor throughout. The blooming relationship and witty banter between Kaida and Tarrin made me smile through the pages. Tarrin and his sweet protective nature honestly have my heart! I thoroughly enjoyed each of the points of view which flowed together so nicely.
There was not one thing I did not love about this book, which is quickly gained the status of one of my all time favorite YA novels!
The world the author had built is unique from many of the other fantasy novels I have read and has a refreshing take on dragons. (Who wouldn’t love a dragon novel??) The cliff hanger ending has had me anxious and awaiting the next in the series!
Book 2 from Emily and once again I wasn’t left disappointed.
It picks off from book 1 and we continue with Kaida and Tarrin, in their journey in making a better world for humans and dragons. We follow them in their discovery of each other and falling in love, as well as who they are.
So much going on with added twists I didn’t see coming , which gives drama, action, love as well as feeling all types of emotions throughout book 2. This kept up with the pace and also left me going how, what, why.
I truly can’t wait to see what the next book brings and only a short time to wait til Emily releases it.
Overall I enjoyed the book, the beginning was a bit slow at first but it did pick up. The character development was delightful and I still swoon over the main couple. They really are cinnamon rolls. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so I am very excited for the next book! My only qualm would be some of the story felt a little redundant after a while, but that's usually true of any travel story. But there were some good twists and a couple of new interesting characters were added that will hopefully have a bigger role in the next book.
This one picks up right where Scales of Ash and Smoke left off!
There's more action, adventure, and romance! I love watching Kaida and Tarrin grow. They're so young and there's so much to learn and experience! I enjoy seeing their relationship develop! Along, with their relationships with others! There's some new characters introduced and I enjoyed them! And holy cliffhanger! Ugh, all the feelings! I can't wait for the next book now!!
Not as good as the first but still a good sequel!! and sadly another cliffhanger.. [cries in a corner😭] good thing is that I can quickly go to the third in no time cuz it’s on KU so WOO for that!!! 🥳
All else I gotta say is.. I hope Tarrin is okay 😓😥
RTC later

No spice- a couple of innuendo and kisses but that’s all No foul language No LGBTQ+ content
I LOVED THIS. Emily does such a fantastic job with writing a fantastic second book to a series which isn’t easy to do!!
Stuff I loved: 🐉 Multiple POV - I especially love seeing villains POV!! It’s always such an awesome inside view of his background. 🐉 the TENSION - with romance it’s always the tension that gets me, and this book delivers 🐉 Kaida and Tarrin - I just love them so much. Character development is always my top priority in books, and their relationship growth is just top notch
No spoilers, but if you love dragons, truly EPIC adventure, enemies to lovers, swoony romance, and a fantasy series that can be funny, suspenseful, and sweet all at the same time, then this is for you!!
Note: I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Even better than the last one! I had the honor of getting an ARC for this book, and here is my review:
I love how in this book, we deeply explore each of the characters in their heart-breaking ways and see how that makes them what they are in the present. Also, the dynamics and relationships each character has made everything worthwhile. I can't wait to see what book 3 will bring! Congratulations to the author!
Although sometimes the love story part gets grating the characters are good and overall the story keeps you reading. Well worth a read and a very good second book.
I had a feeling this one would feel a bit like a filler book to me and unfortunately it did. It felt a little slow for me as the first book did, and I am hoping the last book in the series picks up a bit. There were some surprises here that kept me hooked and tuned in, and I did enjoy it, so it is getting 3 stars.
If you started the first book and liked it I recommend following through with the series as it is well written and I have enjoyed the plot thus far. I just wish I felt a little more connected to the characters.
If you enjoy dragons, shapeshifters, power struggles and magic, then look no further. This is the series for you!
I have been waiting for this book for a few months now. And I had the amazing opportunity to get an ARC copy of the book. It was so worth the wait. Emily Scheider does not disappoint.
I have completely enjoyed reading Scales of Ice and Shadow. This book is a complete rollercoaster of emotions and full of plot twists at the turn of every page.
The world that Emily Schneider has created is absolutely beautiful, it just makes you wish that it was actually true.
I received an ARC copy of this book and I have to say I LOVED it!!
It flowed great from the first book. It kept me interested and invested!! I love seeing the relationships develop and how Kaida has struggled with becoming a dragon and what that means. I also love seeing the struggles of war in each character.
The love story is great! I love that loving someone is a choice! There are so many books that depict love as something you don't choose but I think you do choose who you love. It's also a nice clean romance. I don't feel like it happened overnight. Kaida and Tarrin communicate well and want the best for the other! It's a positive and good relationship.
I love the idioms that she changes to meet the dragons perspective, I.e. saying scales instead of skin, claws instead of fingers. And always detailing the sorry so you never have to go back and read to make sure are they in human form or dragon form.
The imagery of the landscape is amazing! I know exactly what Emily is trying to convey to the readers.
I have so many questions that seem like they will be answered in the next book! The cliff hanger at the end makes me wish the third book was already out because it's killing me to have to wait!
Book Review • “Scales of Ice and Shadow” by Emily Schneider • Rating 5/5 • Synopsis: Kaida and Tarrin have been in hiding since they survived Belharnt. Our duo cannot hide for long since the Remnant is always on their tail. Amongst all the chaos, Kaida is learning to harness her newfound abilities and Tarrin is coming to terms with his family dynamics. They soon realize they must raise an army of their own if they wish to reclaim Elysia. Whom can you trust in a world of dragons, rebels, humans, and shifters? • Thoughts: • Happy publication day! I was gifted an ARC of “Scales of Ice and Shadow,” via eBook, for an honest review. • Possible spoiler warning if you haven’t read "Scales of Ash and Smoke." • I didn’t think it was possible, but I loved the second book more than the first book! I loved the flirting and banter between Tarrin and Kaida. Tarrin is honestly so sweet and protective of Kaida, it kind of broke my heart. The action scenes had my heart racing, worrying what the outcome would be with each fight. Schneider also did a great job of building up the suspense throughout multiple chapters. I was doing everything in my willpower not to skip ahead. This book made me laugh, cry and yell at many of the characters. • The book does end on a cliffhanger, so be ready to have your heart torn out. Luckily, Schneider did post in her Instagram stories that she recently finished writing book three. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long to see what happens next! I would recommend this book to those who like fantasy, adventure, romance, and dragons! • If you enjoy books as much as I do, you can follow me on Instagram at @a_classy_rebel_reader for more book reviews and bookish content! • #ScalesOfIceAndShadow #ScalesOfAshAndSmoke #EmilySchneider #Imaclassyrebelreader #lookatmyclassyrebelread #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview #bookrecs #bookish #bookpics #bookcommunity #bookloversofinstagram #bookaddict #books #booksbooksbooks #booklove #bookaesthetic #bookobsessed #reader #reading #indieauthors #romance #fantasy #Dragons #kaidaandtarrin
I won’t 1 star just because I don’t like it, many people seem to have had good things to say.
For me it was the writing, the characters, and the plot I don’t love; between the expected unexpected twists, the dragging story development, and the severe lack of realistic character interactions and character growth, it was so very hard for me. I was gonna dnf at book one but I committed hoping for more in book two, and I didn’t dnf and I’m STILL going to book three bc I’m here already and my momma didn’t raise a quitter. Lol.
But I can’t stand the FMC. She irks the crap out of me. Usually you wanna love your main character and then later love their love interest.
But the fact that she started off as a slave her whole life who was tortured for 7 years, living day to day scared to death and IMMEDIATELY after being taken from that life, she starts mouthing off to everyone, and can’t stop. Apparently, she doesn’t have a shred of patience or self control even though she’s been forced to work in the service industry under literal threat of pain, and she is constantly just like “oopsies, can’t believe I just said that, who am I? Lol” (no she doesn’t literally say that but it’s the gist). Not only is she impatient and impulsive though, but she’s just overconfidently self-righteous, whiny, INCONSIDERATE AF and a know-it-all about EV-ER-Y-THING!!!!
I let this slide in book one like I can reason it away like she broke a bit from her life, or just group it with the magic excuse, it was fine as it was just the beginning so maybe we’ll see some character growth and she’ll mature and become more likable in book two? Yeah? Maybe?
Unfortunately no, it becomes part of her character traits. I want so badly to see her as a strong female protagonist, but I feel like the room for growth is a chasm, and instead of seeing it filled to build anticipation for the future, the chasm just gets deeper. I hope book three improves that and maybe I can come back and say how wrong I was. But right now the vibes ain’t it. She just needs to gain some external awareness or perspective when it comes to everyone other than her first ever boyfriend/fiancé. Lol. But even with him, she still ensures she comes first. I know that’s deliberate for the plot though.
Also, that’s just her character, I could go on about the others. I kinda just hate them all? It’s like everyone has flaws yeah, but just every person with more than a couple of mentions just kinda sucks as people. Like the interactions and dynamic and thinking of all the people during their perspectives is frustrating to say the least. Like every single one of these people are avoidant. Queen’s avoidant, king’s avoidant, daddy the great’s avoidant. I love a good ol’ run from your problems every once in awhile but too much running makes me tired, damn. Lol.
There’s one more book, I’m already this far, I’ll read it and HOPE I see some growth, it’s not looking likely, but I will try and see.
Also I kinda just want Z to be the love interest, sorry prince Darrin. You’re just not that exciting or bad ass. 🤷🏻♀️ lol.
Jk, anyways, if you stuck around to the end of this review, it’s not the best thing ever written but it’s certainly not the worst thing either!
This book contains everything I wanted in a sequel: tons of action, the introduction of intriguing new characters and lore, and a fast-paced plot that kept me frantically flipping pages!
Kaida and Tarrin are faced with a plethora of new problems in this book, and with everything working against them, things are looking pretty grim. But despite it all, they refuse to back down or run away, and choose to fight for a better world instead.
I absolutely loved this second installment and cannot wait for the conclusion of this series to be released!!
ARC ebook as part of a Emily's book launch team of super fans!!! Y'all need to read this series!! It is so good, easy to read, beautifully written, can't put it down and I am already ready for a re-read of both books 🥰
*Re-read audiobook edition all the feels, still! Can't wait for book 3!
What a marvelous world this is, where dragons are dominant species, where humans are slaves to these dragons, where the few shifter human/dragon hybrid are seen as an abomination! That in itself is more than enough to keep one's attention! But there's more... much much more! An evil sorcerer dragon has set out to destroy all shifters and is hunting Prince Tarrin and Kaida, leaving no stone unturned in his quest to capture them. Tarrin and Kaida are on the run, after the confrontation between Eklos, the dragon sorcerer, and themselves. They have no idea if Eklos survived or not. But there are others who would see them dead too, not only Eklos. The tension is palpable, keeping tune with my pounding heart, as things don't go as planned, time after time after time! What a daring rescue Eldrin embarks on! And I didn't expect some characters to surface, boy was I surprised! But it's completely credible, well described, well executed. There are new characters introduced along the way, some with hidden motives, some not. As Tarrin and Kaida journey to Shegora, they find support along the way but who can they trust is the question on their minds. Z is an interesting character, I'm never sure if he's genuinely on their side or not, makes for intriguing reading. I love how the relationship between Tarrin and Kaida progresses, how they draw strength from each other. It was also so cool that Noam had helped unleash a new magic in Kaida, one forgotten and extinct. This entire book had me on the tip of my toes, from Tarrin and Kaida fleeing Eklos, the pursuit of the Remnant Army, the countless times either Kaida or Tarrin are cornered or captured, the jaw dropping fights along the way, to the final scene where I let out a groan of sheer despair! Tantalizing, all encompassing excitement is the order of the day for this majestic book!
This book is the sequel of Scales of Ash and Smoke!
I must say…Elysia’s world building is magnificent! Everything feels realistic. I can feel the tension, emotions, and fear. I’m as anxious as Kaida especially on the last few chapters of the book!
This book follows Kaida, Tarrin and Eldrin garnering an army of dragons to stand against Eklos, Eldrin’s cousin who hates both shifters and human race. They are about to travel to Shegora and prepare themselves to destroy Eklos.
The revelations left me in awe. Lita alive as a human? Kaida’s ancient magic powers? Who would have thought Kaida is a powerful dragon being. I love everything about her! I love how she became stronger in every progress of the book. Discovering her abilities and unleashing her full potentials was a struggle, and it always surprises me how she discovers everything. I am excited what her true powers are!!
I loved Tarrin as well. He’s so protective (AHHH SO CUTE) and the banters and hope she gives Kaida is all I could live for 🥹 He trusts his beloved so much and put his faith on her. I kind of nervous what will happen to him on book 3.
And ELDRIN! I hope to know more about him. It seems like he’s not yet fully introduced in both sequels and I wish to know everything about him. I hope there would be more banters between him and Kaida, father and daughter, relationship more. I like it how he showed softness towards her. I hope he would tell Kaida more story about her mother. ✨
This book is so easy to follow. Knowing that dragon world is kind of a complicated story, Emily managed to build the world in my mind clearly!
I am so excited for book 3! 🤍 Thank you Emily for this ARC! I am truly grateful for this wonderful world you’ve given us ✨ congratulations!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I don’t even know where to began. This book will be rent free in my head for days. I can’t wait for book three!! The twists and turns, the character development is everything. Kaida is starting to harness her dragon side, she is learning to love it, to use it without fearing the beast within. There are so many quotes that help with everyday life/worth and feelings I have so many saved. When tarrin was telling kaida she worries about killing which makes her not a bad person he raises her it makes her better then eklos and any evil out there. She killed but only for protection and felt guilty after. That is the difference between good and evil.
The connections with her father and tarrin gets deeper, closer and I loved the banter Emily put into this story. She helped make the characters real, helped ease the tension of the evil looming over them and the country. You want the hero’s going through so many dark things to have a laugh once in a while and the “laughing scenes” persay didn’t seemed forced. It was needed and beautifully placed. This book is somehow so relatable it’s scary good!
I can’t say too much without giving it away but the fact that she can surprise you each chapter is a five star amazing piece of art. If you haven’t read this yet (not out until may 24th) you need to!! Dragons/slow burns/magic/war ect is waiting to be read.
Disclaimer: I was given an Arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
If you love dragons, enemies to lovers and fantasy then this book is literally perfect for you!
I literally don’t know where to start with this review because I am still reeling from this book and all the emotions that came with it! To say that this book is incredible is such an understatement. Its so much more than that. Reading this book was not only an honour but a privilege and I genuinely don’t know how im going to go back to living my boring human life when all i want is to be a human-dragon shifter!
This book is such an improvement and step up from the first book, which i didn’t think was possible but here we are. The suspense was literally addicting. I couldn’t stop reading but at the same time i didn’t want to read too fast because i never wanted it to end.
This book is written in such a beautifully natural and real way and I related to so many of the feelings and emotions the characters were going through. I loved the multiple points of view and i loved seeing the motivations and emotions that the characters carried. I felt the love, the pain, the sadness and the loss and more than once i just wanted to hug them and tell them its all going to work out.
Emily has such a beautiful way of telling a story and I am completely speechless and in awe at how much she has made this book come to life in my head. Its safe to say this series will continue to live rent free in my head and I cannot wait for book 3 to come out and for the adventure to continue!
In the same fashion if my review for Scales of Ash and Smoke, what mattered to me most about this story was the MCs development! We see her continue to grow and learn about herself. She’s still warring a bit with what and who she’s supposed to be now and that was hard to read through because of the lack of decision making. I just wanted her to make a decision and move full force with it! But that’s not how someone who is learning a whole new world would likely react. She wants to make her own decisions since that wasn’t often an option when we met her in book one.
The dragons were stinkin cool! We met new magic and new mysterious characters that make you want to know way more about them! (Talking about you, Z!) We learned new lore that matters deeply to the characters and explains some mysteries Kaida is facing. Several characters seem entirely different than they were in the first book, which was a surprise, but it really works and adds to the story! I have so many unanswered questions that make me wish the 3rd book was out already lol
I love Tarin and Kaida’s dynamic in this book. The romance isn’t too spicy but definitely leaves you wanting more scenes of them together. But honestly, the Kaida/Eldrin dynamic gripped me especially in this book! Almost more than Kaida and Tarrin this time 👀
Idk when book 3 comes out but it has a title! Anticipating its release, yet again after another suspenseful epilogue!
First of all, I put off reading the sequel after finishing the first book. I wasn’t a huge fan of the romance in Ash and Smoke, not because it didn’t work but because I felt their physical affections slightly bordered more on lust than love. Ice and Shadow is still that way, but now Kaida and Tarrin are no longer enemies, and 80% of their relationship is quite sweet and works well, and I enjoyed it more than book 1. Eklos is such a hateful villain with no problems being violent in everything as he wants to watch the world burn.
The plot is very simple: stay hidden, get to this place and overthrow Eklos, and lots of traveling. But SOIAS clearly has its own story and does not at all feel like a filler book like some trilogies suffer from. While I prefer wilder goals and quests, the character-driven aspect makes up for it. We get more than just two POVs this time around—five, in fact—so the characters really deepened for me as I read from their perspectives. And I still didn’t get lost in who I was reading. Big plus.
There were two points my mouth dropped open in shock, which is always a pleasant surprise.
Again, while I’d consider this a clean romantasy, I could have gone without the subtle lustiness.
"If I could have murdered the cold, I would have done so in a heartbeat."
This book was everything the second book in a trilogy should be: twists at every turn, new characters and new information that make you say "whaaaaat???", and actual progress through the story that keeps you interested and doesn't feel like filler material.
There were several quick-witted moments that had me laughing out loud as well as many sentences that threw me into a stunned silence. Like, jaw on the floor, giant saucer eyes stunned silence. Yeah, I'm serious.
This book picks up only a couple months after the end of the first book, Scales of Ash and Smoke, following Tarrin and Kaida through more of Elysia gathering what information they can about the state of Vernista and the Remnant army while staying under the radar. Oh, and while they do all this, they kind of need to amass an army of supporters of their own to fight a literal dragon army. No big deal, right?
I'm itching to get my hands on book 3 because I have so many questions I need answered! You'll want to read this book!! Also, the meaning behind these book titles is *chef's kiss*. I cannot wait to find out what the last book will be called!
This is a book that reminds me why I LOVE to read! Emily Schneider’s imagery draws you in to an immersive experience of the story and world she has created. She has written characters with such depth and nuance and humanity that they seem so real and tangible - even if they are dragon shape shifters! Amidst the magic and danger in the story, the characters also deal with topics such as grief, struggling against the darkness within, camaraderie, love, and more! I wasn’t expecting such deep topics in a book about dragons, but it fit the characters perfectly and made me root for them even more than in the first book as we see them grow together and the stakes get even higher.
There is a line in the book that I loved because it’s really the perfect description of the book’s feel: “Elysia is full of wild and incredible magic... There is much you haven’t seen yet.” I couldn’t have said it better lol. I am so excited for book 3! This one has set up the next to be the most epic of them all and I can’t wait!! SOIAS was easily a 5/5!!
Synopsis: After barely escaping Belharnt with their lives, Kaida and Prince Tarrin are on the run from the Remnant. The palace has been seized by the council. Eklos is alive and building an army to defeat the shape shifter and all humans. Kaida, Prince Tarrin and Eldridge are trying to build and army of their own as the flee to Shegora, in the north of Elysia. Support is slim as village after village turns them down.
My Thoughts: This is the second book of three in the Ash & Smoke series and it picks up right where the last book left off. I’ll start off by saying that fantasy is not my typical go-to, and this is the only fantasy series I have read but enjoyed the first book and this one was just as good. This book was a very well thought out sequel and leaves nothing that you might expect out. My only regret, that I have several books lined up for this month that I need to read before I can go to the third book! It ended in a cliffhanger that has you begging to read on.
